Tron Pilot

Here’s a test I did today based on the graphics from the Tron Trailer using only After Effects and Optical Flares. It’s not perfect but it was very interesting trying to recreate the look without using a 3D program. I’m going to relax this weekend and then perhaps make a tutorial or release a project file.

Have a great weekend everyone!

looks sweet, was thinking of trying something like this, will post what i make.
    December 20th, 2010 @ 12:52 am
maaaannnn you gotta publish a tut for this !!!
    December 20th, 2010 @ 4:29 pm
well if you actually look at some of his tutorials you can put some of those together to make that heres some tips
using tutorial 103 to make the lights at the edges and using
tutorial 18 to creat the light strokes to represent the letter and on the O make duplicate it make on smaller or bigger then jsut animate it and you can buy some of their products to add more effectss to it maybe twitch is good
to add some tiny effects to it or you can just using some footage from action essentials 2 to add some more prekeyed
footages to get well more effects loll..
oh and by the way a 13 year old figured out how to do this
oh and you can also use one of the presets they made and gave out for free (how kind of them i was thinking they should have sold it instead) like the lightsaber glow v1 or v2 to add that glowy effect :) well thats all
    this is TheEditor
go to my youtube channel i would bbe starting tutorials on 2011 nothing like andrew kramers i dont want to copy him
even though he does a very good job
im ditching being a doctor i wanna work for video copilot
hoping theyll still be alive when i can get a job... loll
my name in youtube is MrAmylP
and if andrew kramer dosnt post a tutorial on how to do this
i would post it as my first ever tutorial on youtube
once again this is TheEditor 13 Years Old saying good bye and thank you to andrew kramer :)
BTW the way i said how to do this isnt the only way...

always awsome.....!!!!!
December 17th, 2010 @ 9:33 pm
impressive.. that must be cs5 only?
Unfortunately i'm currently running cs3 still, hoping for an upgrade here soon :)
    December 18th, 2010 @ 12:07 pm
You should be able to do this all of the way back to After Effects 6.5 (assuming you have some of the more modern plug-ins). Not too much has changed since then, just GUI enhancements and a few new tools like rotobrush and 64bit-ness.

Render times might be a little scary though... I'm sure that was a 32 bit project.
    December 19th, 2010 @ 4:53 pm
yeah ofcourse, i know various 3rd party-plugins who could achieve the same result. I was curious since I believe cs5 now at least has a more decent '3d support' on textlayers. (correct?)

Have a good weekend too... Thanks for all your lessons, humor and for motivating me every time.
December 17th, 2010 @ 11:26 pm
Looks awesome.
Im bettin.....hes using the same technique as the standard dupplicate 30 layers to make it "look" 3d....Except...his front layer is the only one with a stroke....then.....all the layers below it...have a dotted line traced around the edges....I think that would work! :)
Salomon Abiassi

Thanks Andrew ..>
But The 3D Text on After Effect Is Really problem.
Mr Andrew I interesting when you get script made a real 3D text in AE. This will certainly be a wonderful thing.

Thank you Andrew, for your support and taught. And make sure you have entered history as the first person contributed to the dissemination of design in public.

Gave yourself a sense of confidence and trust, you deserve. Andrew you are a wonderful legend person.
    December 18th, 2010 @ 3:08 am
He is not Mr. Andrew, he is Lord Andrew The Master of AE
    December 18th, 2010 @ 3:40 am
peter comeback to the real world, Andrew is really good at what he does. But he is not a lord.
December 18th, 2010 @ 1:51 am

DO A TUTORIAL, not a project file!
    December 18th, 2010 @ 6:38 am
I agree. Tutorial not project file. I have already seen 1 of these on the web, with a full tutorial, and I expect to see many more. Tutorial would definitely be better.
    December 18th, 2010 @ 11:18 am
that ae tuts one is junk. i'd be more than happy with a project file, but PLEASEEEEE releasing something!
December 18th, 2010 @ 2:08 am
DAMN ANDREW!!! That looks great! I was wondering how to get the grid effect in the letters. Nice audio too!
December 18th, 2010 @ 2:14 am
Wow! That looks great! Please make a tutorial for that!!!!!!
December 18th, 2010 @ 2:37 am
That´s awesome as always!
December 18th, 2010 @ 2:45 am
Hi Andrew,
I have a lot of question about this video:
1st - why only after effects? With a 3D app (like cinema4D.. for example) yo can matte frontal text and extrusion and composite that two layer in AE with more accurate results
2nd - i think the text animation is too rigid, with more flexibility (more dynamics..maybe?) how the result will be?

(apologize my english ^_^)
    December 19th, 2010 @ 10:28 pm
1- Search for the text. (Clue After Effects Tutorials)
2- Different, but ultimate as unique as this particular outcome.
December 18th, 2010 @ 2:53 am
Please tuts this
Have a great weekend
December 18th, 2010 @ 2:58 am

December 18th, 2010 @ 4:54 am
Hi Andrew!

Nice Test Video. Always amazed what you are doing just in After Effects! I like the subtle use of Optical Flares (Rainbow). Nice and clean as always!
I did a similar Test Video last week but with 3ds Max.
Hope you like it :)
Wish you a great Weekend!
Snowy Regards from Berlin

More Great work from Andrew, apart from the stunning optical flare, the sound works really well. Another brilliant piece of creative production.
But where is are Christmas message, could we please have a good tutorial with a bit of holiday cheer.
The more tutorials the better as far as I'm concerned and there so funny too.

All the best to everyone at Video CoPilot, please keep up the good work, but have a great Christmas and New Year.

December 18th, 2010 @ 7:40 am
guys...did you read yourself..please... sounds like you give him an order to do this tutorial.
he is the only one to decide... sometimes a project is good for us to find out how he did it, without follow step by step the tutorial...
December 18th, 2010 @ 8:30 am
ausum man=) so damn cool+no 3d
December 18th, 2010 @ 8:32 am
Its very awesome.
I`ll just point out one thing. I`m really not sure what focus mm of the camera, but in the end when you lay off the text it bends in a very strange way.
Is there anyway to combine 2 cameras for it not to bend like that or I dont know...? Im not any expert but I know you love to make your videos as perfect as posible.
¡¡¡Saludos desde Honduras!!! (Best regards from Honduras!!!)
December 18th, 2010 @ 8:50 am
Awesome Andrew,

You never fail to inspire. Could we do a version of this tutorial with out optical flares? I have purchsed several your products and purchased CS5 and upgraded my system. I am broke this christmas and cannot aford Optical Flares for a while. The wife and kids have to eat this month.
December 18th, 2010 @ 9:44 am
Andrew,my friend, you have to make a tutorial for this :) It's very nice :)
December 18th, 2010 @ 10:04 am
Amazing work as always, especially since it was created with only AE! I agree, a tutorial on that text transition and intrusion technique for the 3d text would be amazing! Project file would also be nice but if I had to choose....Project file all the way Mr Kramer!
December 18th, 2010 @ 10:09 am
That is very cool dude!!! Keep it up
December 18th, 2010 @ 10:14 am
dang i was thinking the exact same thing! the tron title is kinda cool! love you man
Sang Hee
December 18th, 2010 @ 10:20 am
Is that blur in the background a lens blur, optical flares or some other 3rd party plugin?
December 18th, 2010 @ 10:27 am
a tutorial would be better than a project file to learn the steps and then we can use our own ways to make something. merry christmass and god blesses all everyone. TINY TIMY.
December 18th, 2010 @ 10:27 am
it's Gorgeous like always Andrew. :)

December 18th, 2010 @ 11:56 am
Hey Andrew, I really liked the video. I did something similar, but I only used After Effects. I got 2 pictures and added a lot of effects to make it look real. Check it out at Tell me if you like it.

December 18th, 2010 @ 2:43 pm
That's actually sort o similar to a test I did way back using only After Effects to recreate the Tron logo! Yours is way better of course, but here's mine if anyone's interested.
December 18th, 2010 @ 2:50 pm
I think you should do a tutorial because you use this technique a lot and tend to release the file.

Also I hate you for being awesome at AE :P
December 18th, 2010 @ 3:19 pm
Love what you did with that see through light font.

I made this video also using Optical Flares (lights behind the guy) and some other techniques you've taught me. The music is also mine.

Have a great weekend
Josh Thorpe
December 18th, 2010 @ 4:53 pm
This is amazing as usual...

December 18th, 2010 @ 6:34 pm
After your break, tutorial please! Would be nice if before Xmas, like a little xmas gift :-)

Happy Holidays!
December 18th, 2010 @ 6:37 pm
A tutorial would be prefered, ratherly than just a project file, but just as the technique will be revealed, i'm happy, and i am sure i do not speak for myself only!
December 18th, 2010 @ 7:47 pm
Just three words: "WOW!, TUTORIAL, THANKS!!!"

December 19th, 2010 @ 12:26 am
Yeah I would really like to see a tutorial on this. I made up something with the letters flying in from the trailor as well using 3DS MAX and AE, but just couldn't get the sides on the 3d letters like I wanted (Andrew hit it perfect-the line effect on the sides).
December 19th, 2010 @ 12:59 am
that looked great to me, can't wait to see Tron later this week! Look forward to the tutorial as well.
December 19th, 2010 @ 2:27 am
Stunning work once again Andrew, I had a feeling you would do something based on Tron due to it's spectacular effects, it was begging for the Kramer magic and a tutorial.
markee PHI

The preset is called
December 19th, 2010 @ 1:44 pm
Andrew >>> you rock ;) i'm dieing to see this tutorial ...
Sam Swire
December 19th, 2010 @ 2:04 pm
Yeah CGtuts already coverd this so in respect of your private life I would say that you could just release the project file! :)

December 19th, 2010 @ 2:17 pm
Could it be you used Shatter, and reversed it? I've used that technique and got pretty good looking 3d effect with letters flying from behind the camera and setting up correctly.

Still trying to figure out how you created that luminescent glow on the edges of the letters... Maybe duplicated the shatter layer, and lowering the extrusion depth. Then adding a nice gloweffect (trapcode shine maybe?) and change transform mode to add.

That should work. Gotta try it tomorrow when I got the time!
December 19th, 2010 @ 4:36 pm
Congratulations Andrew, Paulinia Cine, Brazil.
December 19th, 2010 @ 5:16 pm
Awesomeness in a can.
December 19th, 2010 @ 9:39 pm
I tried to make the tron logo too. :o) I used After Effects and Optical Flares. One of the atmospheres from action essentials and sound FX.
December 19th, 2010 @ 9:41 pm
Here is a test that I did of the Tron Logo using After Effects and Optical Flares. I used Modo for the 3d letters.
December 19th, 2010 @ 9:45 pm
Here is a test that I did of the tron Logo using after effects and Optical flares. The 3d letters where done in Modo. I made and outline of the text using illustrator than imported the text into modo. In modo I textured the inside of the text with a grid pattern and the front faces I left white. Then I animated each letter coming in at different speeds. Then I took the animation and composited in after effects over a tron like picture. I slapped in some flares in the back ground like little cars running around. I think it looks pretty close. I need to work on the glow look alittle..

December 20th, 2010 @ 1:05 am
Hi andrew..nice upcoming tutorials..check this out andrew. this is my TRON Logo version ;)...

Hi guys, my name is Antonio Cerri,
I made a CINEMA 4D + AFTER EFFECTS tutorial in September 2010,
to recreate the tron movie title, here's the link:

Hey Kramer !, I have a gift for you.
Video Copiltot vector logo, with my tron legacy font (CRR NTN Outline + regular).

If you want to customize your logo in the TRON Legacy style,
you can buy TRON 2 FONT in this link:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ;)

I have requested many times a request! Please create a tutorial on duplicate character interaction in movies. Pleaseeeee pleaseeeeeeee!
Merry Christmas!!!!
December 25th, 2010 @ 7:36 pm
Nice. I created this one with the light cycle and the Recognizer.
The Tron font is actually free and you can find it with a simple Google search. I just created my 3D imports with the Tron font that includes some wingdings.
    December 28th, 2010 @ 4:25 am
Oh my god, your video is really disgusting, but what is this?
Newbie, my font is also on MyFonts, and compete with
    369 glyphs.
Surely, given that it is all free for you, you will also have a copy of After Effects torrent download somewhere!
Go for the farmer, who is best for you.
December 26th, 2010 @ 9:13 am

watched tron... in the intro either you made it, or they totally used your assets for the look down from the buildings... the 3d city looking down over sams head tuts. crazy... if you did it, nice, if not, well, still inspiring people with slightly larger pics. well done.

Dimensions are: 500x150

But it's maximised on this link, but you get the idea of the file.
