Under Cover

Good news everyone! Things have been a little quiet around here because I was given an amazing opportunity to work with J.J. Abrams and Co. on the main title for an a new NBC show called UnderCovers. In collaboration with Stephen Reedy, who created the concept and Jennifer Horvath as editor, I used 3Ds Max to create the CG elements and composited everything in After Effects for the main title. In fact, I even used AE CS5 for the first time from start to finish.

Unfortunately, I can’t post the intro yet but please check it out when it airs Sept 22, at 8pm on NBC. But, hopefully I can talk about it more after it airs, we’ll see.

It was a lot of fun, plenty of late nights and hard work. I even had a chance to work on several VFX shots for the pilot with my friend Brandon Fayette. I sometimes try to take a minute to appreciate how cool it is to have an opportunity to work on the things you love . You never know, one day you could be making crummy tutorials for a living.. oh wait!

September 20th, 2010 @ 9:49 pm
Congrats Andrew! Much deserved after all your hard work and effort helping others learn.
Agreed, I myself have to stop and say wow I love what I do and a large percentage of people don't get to say that but a large percentage aren't willing to put in the hard work and late nights.
September 20th, 2010 @ 9:55 pm

Andrew Did you see the movie 300 (please see).
In this movie, movie creators used Blood videos like
"Action Essentials 2: 02. Blood"
Do you can make a movie Like 300 (00:48:00 to 00:49:10 Slow Motion) with your Axe (or Spear like 300) and with your Action Essentials 2.
Do you Understand?

PS: Sorry to say for many of you that aren't working doing the stuff you really like but I work with After Effects almost the whole day in a TV channel thanks to my knowledge in graphic design and Andrew K. so they think I'm special because of my animations that my coworkers can't do just by mixing all the tutorials in here. Thanks, Andrew and company.

September 21st, 2010 @ 4:26 am
cool. I also am fortunate to do what I love for a living, and the tutorials on this website has helped me realize that dream.

I look forward to this show, although from my perspective, they could have selected more established actors to give the show a better chance. Yet they went with lesser known 'safe' ambiguous look for crossover appeal...shame. Besides, Boris Kodjoe is hot but not an established nor great actor. His wife (in real life) is a great actress.

However, good for Andrew on the motion graphics element.
September 21st, 2010 @ 4:37 am
Congratulation Andrew!!!!I can't wait to see the video, but,
unfortunately in my country there is no NBC channel so after the premiere could you post the video here so we can all see it?

"You never know, one day you could be making crummy tutorials for a living.. oh wait!"

Don't say that. You give a lot of people opportunities to learn these things without going to a class and paying top dollar. I've learned a lot from you and I doubt I would be "exactly" where I am today without your tutorials.
September 21st, 2010 @ 10:13 am

September 21st, 2010 @ 10:52 am
J.J. Abrams seems to prefer you to do his titles. A lot of directors like to hire the same people more than once. Don't be surprised if you get asked to work on this super 8 thing!
September 21st, 2010 @ 10:58 am
That's absolutely fantastic! Great opportunity, then again...for a great artist! Keep up your great work, please.
September 21st, 2010 @ 11:30 am

Lol, dude looks like the Old Spice guy :D

The chick is hot but the trailer didn't do much for me. Too much comedy for a show dealing with something as serious as undercover espionage (trailer could be off of course).

At least the new season of Fringe starts soon :) Too bad we have to wait till 2012 for the next Star Trek :(

I just saw the intro, it was amazing Andrew, please make a tutorial!
September 22nd, 2010 @ 5:45 pm
Like the intro, AK. The flares are in there, saw what looked like time remapping. Did you create the wedding ring in 3ds max? And the reflections are really hot (reflecting full video) no doubt
September 22nd, 2010 @ 5:51 pm
just saw the intro pretty good. its clean smooth and simple looking. i say the hardest designs are the ones that look like it took no time.

Felicitaciones Andrew, exclente!!
tus trabajos son excelentes, saludos desde argentina
September 22nd, 2010 @ 9:12 pm
Nice work on the Movie Title. I do have one question...when you're asked to do something like this, do you get to be as creative as you wish or do you have an Art Director who provides ideas of what you'll be allowed to do? Also, who gives the final OK once you're done?

September 22nd, 2010 @ 9:25 pm
I just saw it awesome job!
September 23rd, 2010 @ 12:35 am
so now that the show has run live, show us the Opening titles you did ? :D
September 23rd, 2010 @ 12:42 am
Hey, congrats Andrew,
I'm from Germany, I couldn't see your work, hopefully you will show us your work on your site soon, or on youtube.

best wishes,
September 23rd, 2010 @ 12:49 am
hi andew!

i ve got one question.
usually you work for your own business, site, tutorials and products.
but do you have a normal demoreel for your clients with projects like this one for tv broadcast or commercials?

greets from germany
September 23rd, 2010 @ 2:33 am
you can watch the main title here, It's on the official undercoverTV channel;)
September 23rd, 2010 @ 2:39 am
Nice, nice, nice. Your part is clean, informative and simple. I like it so much.
Not so much the fact that the Madrid is in some South American town, that the Spanish they speak is Latino and not European etc. But this would be usual american mistakes in the movies (series).
September 23rd, 2010 @ 2:56 am
Congratulations. Well done.
September 23rd, 2010 @ 3:12 am
wow its awsumm.......................
September 23rd, 2010 @ 3:24 am
Congrats! Well deserved :)
September 23rd, 2010 @ 6:15 am
A can u make a tutorial of how to make the intro of
human target

September 23rd, 2010 @ 7:39 am
I checked out the show last night man! I was looking for the parts that looked like you did them and as usual you did an awesome job dude! You may get all kinds of calls once the networks figure out that your whole fanbase will watch a show only b/c you had something to do with it!!!
September 23rd, 2010 @ 7:43 am

cyntific may be right. You may start cutting into Troika's work. LOL
September 23rd, 2010 @ 9:06 am
shadowloader, there are already tutorials out there with the effects that you want, go check out this links:
http://www.digitaljuice.com/djtv/detail.asp?sid=411&sortby=&page=8&rpid=0&rvid=0&swid=0&searchid=0 and
Does anybody knows if the spot aired yet? I've been wainting to watch it! :D
September 23rd, 2010 @ 11:15 am
The Human Target intro (the watercolor version, not the digijuice one) would be one of my wishes if the "shadowloader" wants to share it with us (in a forum for example).
Have you noticed guys how good is a "Bazooka" projectil well done. I suspect (also because of the presence of the Optical Flares) this was also AK shot.
September 23rd, 2010 @ 11:22 am
Super Gratz Andrew - from all of us here at The Devil's Minstrels we always wish you the best of luck in your endeavors as we have learned so much from you and wouldn't be in the great place we are (heading for even bigger venues) without ya.

You deserve it and much more :)

Personally, DigitalJuice doesn't even come close to VideoCopilot.com , Andrew just kills it with his tutorials, reason why saying this is because VideoCopilot has been here from the very start :D
September 23rd, 2010 @ 3:53 pm
I can only imagin how many scenes they had to tell you to remove thoese flares...

Of course I know DJTV doesn't even compare at all! In fact, in my personal opinion Video Copilot is "THE" most important AE site in the hole internet! The tutorials are meant to teach tecniques and not just effects. I just helped shadowloader getting to want he wanted (wich is the tecnique not the result in specific). Talking about the flares here is a great video that every AE fan would find interesting! http://vimeo.com/15192184 Those wainting for AE to render a project should watch this video to the end XD
September 23rd, 2010 @ 6:03 pm
Yeah I knew when I saw the show, the title scene, & some of the fx's had Andrew Kramer written all over it. Great work as always.
September 23rd, 2010 @ 7:11 pm
video is now on Youtube... Looks great
September 23rd, 2010 @ 8:52 pm
I just want to take this opportunity to thank you for providing your readers with the BEST online resource of AE tutorials. I am a film school graduate and I can honestly say that I've learned just as much from your site as I did in 4 years of college. I'm thrilled that your hard work and is paying off and those that work in the industry are recognizing your talent. I wish you a world of success.

It was almost like watching your tutorials

A JJ Abrams's show on NBC, Oh YEAH!
I knew you were TOO GOOD to be unuse by the "big boys"
for too long.
So... how much was it? sorry,I mean how was it?
uh, naa how much was it?
September 25th, 2010 @ 10:21 am
Andrew, after taking a closer look a the movie title, I realized a flaw...where is Sam Loya? Sam has stood by your side on your rise to fame and fortune and what do you do when you get to the threshold of success... you day "Hey gotta go Sam!" I think in the next movie title you need to tell JJ that Sam has to be an integral part of the scene or you're out!!! -- Or maybe not...

September 25th, 2010 @ 12:45 pm
but where is u r name...

September 26th, 2010 @ 3:06 pm
I knew it! I knew I recognized that style of editing somewhere. I knew you had something to do with it. lol, great job.

you are a hero among heroes.
September 27th, 2010 @ 8:20 pm
Nice work Kramer. I like on the last twist of the ring, where it looks scratched and worn. Also, I agree on having Loya do small spot cameos on all your future work with JJ and/or other top H-Wood Producers. When can I come over and work with you on your next work whether it be a new tutorial or project. Let me know yo!
September 28th, 2010 @ 1:17 am
Im glad for you Andrew, Keep up the good work! I have spend hours behind your tut´s its amazing what you can do :)

September 29th, 2010 @ 1:11 pm
Yup, that title reeks of AK. If I watched it on my own I would think it was you or a major fan.
September 30th, 2010 @ 8:05 am
Can anyone give the name of the FONT used for the title "UNDERCOVERS" please?
September 30th, 2010 @ 11:39 am
Hi Andrew!

I wached Undercover and saw the title that really is your style. I guess I would have think of you even if I didn't know you worked on it. Niceeeeee!

Did you also work on the explosion is the Russian warehouse (or factory), the one made because of a RPG. It look to me like the explosion of the meteor crash tutorial (3D particles) ?
October 2nd, 2010 @ 11:05 pm

Haha I probably would have thought someone ripped you off if you didn't write this post
October 4th, 2010 @ 6:19 pm
Funny thing is that I'll be checking out this show NOT because it JJ's but because YOU did the title. I was gonna let this one slide. Now that I know you worked on it, I'll check it out. Thanks!
October 12th, 2010 @ 8:03 pm
Congrats Andrew, I was watching the show and me and a friend of mine said "that title is really nice, i bet Andrew Kramer did it" keep up the good work!

October 22nd, 2010 @ 11:21 am
AK, looks like your hard work on the intro will go down in the annals of canceled show history on this one. Or so it seems. News says that JJ's new baby is going the way of Josh's Dollhouse.....Sorry

November 17th, 2010 @ 11:34 am
Thank you for all your great tutorials! You help me start AE and i appreciate that. You helped thousands stand up into the computer design world. You showed us helpful way to creating amazing effects. I have not seen ANY other people do as good as your doing right now. You put a lot of hard work into your tutorials. In your Tutorials you don't show us just how to make the effect, but you teach us way to do it. You explain it to us. so
I would like to thank you again!

December 3rd, 2010 @ 7:38 pm

June 28th, 2012 @ 8:50 pm
Andrew im not sure if you will even read this but I want it to be known. I have been following your creative mind for about a year and a half now. From the start i was completely lost using after effects and then i started watching your tutorials, now iv seen tutorials on youtube before…some helped some made me want to off myself in the bathroom… but you however have dedicated your time to something worth doing…the passion you share for making something amazing and easy to understand (along with comic relief) has made working with after effects a breeze…i now work for many corporate companies and also just got a few commercials into the local movie theaters thanks to you're amazing skill and very helpful tutorials…( and no i didn't use any of your templates to get where i am) iv evolved over the past years to become some what of an artist in this area…and i have no one but you to thank…so Andrew Kramer… THANK YOU.
