In this tutorial we will be creating a progressive shatter effect using the Pixel Poly plug-in and some simple expressions. This 20 minute tutorial is an expansion to the 3D Ball Dispersion technique for offsetting animated layers, to achieve a unique burn-away look.
PS, the handy SEQUENCER script can be downloaded with the project.

Been waiting for this. Thanks Andrew!
Nice Work! :* You are beautiful Andrew!!
Sweet.. Curious.. I’ve seen a couple things you have done with pixel Polly.. how come you don’t touch the actual shatter effect in AE.. Just curious if its something that’s not as good as I thought.
Looking forward to this thank you
Really enjoy the focus on third party plug-ins every now and then. You know… besides Trapcode or VCP created. These are great tools but I like the exposure to new ones that may be worth a look at every now and then. But like all third party plug-ins you should never rely on them. You never know if your next studio will own that plug-in.
Tutorial Looks great so far d:)
Awesome stuff, yet again.
Wore my VCP shirt to work today.
Nice tutorial andrew !!!!!!

Incredible man. It is amazing what creative thinking and technique can accomplish! I’m excited to be learning more about scripting w/in AE and recently found some excellent resources on a surf: (Edit keyboard shortcuts, modifying a comp’s motion blur settings interactively (Active Shutter)

Ha! Very clever video
ohhhhh yeah, very cool tutorial my dear andrew.

Wow this is incredibly great i laughed so hard because i knew that this had to be him on the picture…
simply cool
This is my attempt, messed up the timing on the shatter but pretty much was fun to make and learned new tips.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAvy1Ia5ZZc
Sorry Andrew
but this shatterize movie has too much combinations of effects for me. Because of many blur, shine, glow, moving I can’t see and enjoy base shatter effect which could be cool. That single image of shatter effect is much better than the whole movie.
wow
verry good tuto
i wish to thank u for this
you are the best of best in world the after effects
NIce buddy u r doing good job
I love only live footage FX. Waiting for the ledge tutorial.
Please Mr.Andrew concentrate on live footage FX. All these static shatter & glitter can be done in innumerable other programs. Not worth spending time on these.
this will be perfect with my movie thanks Andrew
WHAOUUUUUUU!!!
Andrew I love you
Hey andy see this comment i left on a previous tut it might be nice to add
INSTANCE EFFECTS
create a ajustment layer then pre comp it
THEN DELETE THE AJUSTMENT LAYER INSIDE THE PRE COMP (just go with it)
Create new adjustment layer in side that pre comp and add your effects to it.
Then that pre comp can be used as may times as you like but make changes to the effects inside it and they will be global
amaaazing ,,, i am dreaming about u doing the transformer title intro … with all the metal and stuff
Thank’s Andrew! We hope on soon VFX tutorial with Sam.
thanks Andrew
Amazing Tutorial Andrew!!!!!!!! I hope the tutorial with Sam too!!!
Is it possible to do this effect on a person perhaps?
That’s so cool man! Thanks!
selvarajan, are you joking?

http://www.motionserved.com/Gallery/30-in-30/459317
My crappy text doesnt appear!! Even when im typyng and the color is white! HELP
Great tutorial. Really creative. Tried it on my own witz a gold-ish look but without too much details. It also looks really nice

Great tutorial (as always).
Quick tip for the viewers: To quickly reverse the order of the layers (i.e. ABCDE into EDCBA) select the bottom one first, shift-click on the top one, cut them (ctrl-x) and paste them back (ctrl-v). Voila!
Great tut)
Thanks Andrew
I made something simшlar:

Hey Andrew Great tutorial…
Here’s what i’ve done following your tutorial…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB067Snq5MA
Instead of use the text in AE, you can use a 3D render too! Would looks great.
Amazing tut.
I was wondering is it possible to use CC pixel polly to use custom shapes, or images, i know you can do it with particels but this is a lot quicker would be awesome if you could use custom images as the shatter instead of just the triangle and box.
@Paradoc: LOL exactly
IM A STUDENT OF PHOTOSHO, THIS IZ REALY NICE STUF TO IMPROVE MY CREATIVITY THNKXXX DUDE,,,!!!
Andrew, Did you change the Website’s BG colour? I find it different…
Hi Andrew,
What lens blur effect did you use for the sample video? Box blur doesn’t give accurate circles of confusion and I’d love to know how you did it.
Thanks.
Muchas Gracias Andrew, Soy Chileno y soy un fanatico de tus tutoriales y de esta web site
Espero alguna dia poder llegar a tener conocimientos tan expertos y delicados como los tuyos.
Saludos. Desde Concepción, Chile.
This looks really awesome! (As usually
) I hope to be able to check it out tomorow!
Looks like I’ve got myself a new intro! The best tutorial I’ve seen around Thanks Andrew! Love ya
Hey Andrew, great tutorial as usual. By the way did you have a hand in the new Fringe into? I just say the pilot and noticed the intro had some interesting familiarities to one of your posts http://www.videocopilot.net/blog/2010/01/hbo-behind-the-scenes-1983/ Coincidence?
Andrew please I have a problem… On my video, I made an intro like this: the title hits a metal wall and particles come out of the impact as an ember fire.
the problem is, I can`t creat the perfect ember effect like the BREAKDOWN [counter strike] video on youtube. If you want you can check it out on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5pGgE3oTHo
Please help me andrew!
Andrew thanks for the tutorials that you give

AK, thx for your time and efforts. I enjoy your tutorials and this site immensely. Keep up the great work!
very thanks mr andrew
You go beyond the technique and put the spit and polish on it which is what makes these tutorials shine. Thanks for all the great work.
Thanks once again!!
That is pretty cool Mr andrew, your tutorial will still remain no 1 in all tutorial sites, great job and keep it up…..
Andrew,
I’m really love your work. Do you use a mac or pc or does it matter. I currently have a pc but it seems like most graphic and motion designers use a mac. It is considered the industry standard or have pcs’ just being getting a bad rap.
Wonder stuff! Love info like this.
Here is my take using this latest
dose of VC goodness. I think it
makes muster… =)

Love this place!
Is there a reason you added the blur to each layer in the comp instead of to the adjustment layer?
Great tutorial!
Once again, thank you Andrew. I can express enough on how I appreciate what you do here for us at Video Copilot.
Here is test #2. My first C4D to AE project. =)

I found you can get a similar effect if you use the sampleImage() script, link it to a control gradient and you can get a nice wave going through things. I haven’t applied to to remake this effect but it runs through a simple scale parameter easy enough. Check it out:
