sam VS sam

Watch Sam VS Sam, a video we featured in our last Blog Show. The show also included behind the scenes footage and some added commentary.

Watch sam VS sam

Video Notes for the gear-junkies: We shot this scene using the canon 7D and a 50mm 1.4 lens. For the close POV style shots we shot with the standard 18-55mm lens. To avoid jitter we shot on a tripod for most of the scene and then added some wiggle inside AE. The scene was shot with 2 350 Arri lights.

The end scene was created using a blood element from Action Essentials 2. You may also be interested in this video from a while ago.

Cool! Thanks for posting!
November 3rd, 2009 @ 6:31 pm
Sam just couldn't stand up to his own head's power. le sigh.
November 3rd, 2009 @ 6:33 pm
Aww heck, seemed like the perfect excuse to do a tutorial on merging the same people into the same, complex shot. I don't even recall seeing any shots where both their faces were clearly visible.
November 3rd, 2009 @ 6:33 pm
Nice one! Can't wait to see Sam get electrified.
November 3rd, 2009 @ 6:36 pm
LOL I love this. Great visual quality too with that camera

Loved the video, I couldn't stop laughing after I watched it.

But out of curiosity, why would you use the SLR camera for the video as opposed to an ACTUAL video camera?

Poor Sam... Even in victory, he still suffers defeat...
We appreciate your sacrifices Sam!!!
Great new tuts Andrew! Thank you too!

November 3rd, 2009 @ 7:09 pm
Oh, i have a question. I'm pretty sure that when Sam.... fired the shot, after the muzzle flash, I think you used an optical flare right?
November 3rd, 2009 @ 6:14 pm
I'm reading this on my phone right now but will watch when I get home
November 3rd, 2009 @ 7:14 pm
I liked the extra addition of the ricochet having an effect on the environmen, but I almost think that there should be some sort of scorch or indentation on the surface which it encounters.
Sam Gilbert
November 3rd, 2009 @ 7:22 pm
This is Great, I'm thinking about getting the 7D myself.

Aido
November 3rd, 2009 @ 8:08 pm
Thats great to know you can do that with the 7D.
Im waiting for one with an 18-135mm lens.

I keep hearing that people have trouble colour correcting the footage from it though.
Crushed blacks and artifacty.

Did you use any of the custom picture styles, like 'advanced flat'?
FirePhil
November 3rd, 2009 @ 8:28 pm
Very funny :D poor sam :)

I figured, that i got the same Gun.. is that Glock 17 BB-gun? Or lock 18?

November 3rd, 2009 @ 8:29 pm
Why wouldn't you use the 7D? Sure it's an SLR camera, but it's got more professional, cinematic qualities to its image than any other prosumer cameras. I'd say its pros outweigh its cons by a longshot. The average viewer can't tell the difference between 7D/5D footage or RED.
November 3rd, 2009 @ 8:32 pm
Look, I don't have to have to kill you... But I will kill you, if I have to...

Cracks me up everytime

Okay then, that is brilliant. The Oscar for an outstanding performance in an online tutorial goes to.... Sam Loya.

Also, 'Free Sam Loya' t-shirts with a snap of evil Sam's face as he cocks that eyebrow. Yes!

Hey Andrew and all the others with a Canon 7D or 5DMkII. I just found a video on how you can increase the dynamic range of your camera. His examples are a bit over the top (regarding the saturation) but it is amazing what you can achieve with that little thing.

This is great Andrew. Just a suggestion: if you want to get detailed with it, put a bullet hole or make a bit damage on the shovel at 00:28 after the bullet glide on it..
ALex Nonnato
November 3rd, 2009 @ 11:22 pm
Oooh man I was did repeat again and again the clip, Sam was killed a lot of times himself, that was so hard for him, what a headache!!

I can't stop of laughing

Ouch!! my stomach.

But the Action Essentials 2 RULES!!
the image it's amazing
ALex Nonnato
November 3rd, 2009 @ 11:29 pm
But the surfaces were not damaged, what happened?
with the level of quality that are driving now is a detail that should not happen.

Sorry!!
November 3rd, 2009 @ 11:44 pm
The face Sam makes when he's using his telepathics power is really really hilarous :D
You should create a Sam's fan club, selling goodies etc :D

November 4th, 2009 @ 12:04 am
Awesome stuff! just a quick side note, for the title is that just simple lens flare for making the blue light?
andrew lee
November 4th, 2009 @ 12:15 am
After watching this a few times now and the shot from behind Sam with the gun, as he tries to prevent it turning on him (0:19-00:20)... I can't help it but Evil Sam should be in the shot, it's as if Sam is actually on his own is a warehouse.

Andrew, you really have got to make more of these shorts, no tutorial required, just let others work it out for themselves, a bit like homework... Would love a 7D myself

@Ennis Buchi:. Too be honest, if a bullet hit that many objects on it's way from gun to head, I very much doubt it would cause a fatal wound, so had it put a bullet hole in the shovel, it would have stopped there.
JB
November 4th, 2009 @ 12:17 am
Awsome AK Love it.

Gear Junkies....Love it when you talk dirty to us LOL.

Did happen to notice sa was missing on the cut at about oh :17 when sam is pointing the gun in his mouth.

HAHAHA you should do a Direct TV Freeze frame in there that would be to die for, or the MGD Slow mo with say your old sponser.
November 4th, 2009 @ 12:27 am
Do you use a rig with the 7D and can you recommend one - the zacuto one's are looking good, but is their own version of a follow focus working?

Hey

This is great, and the quality is pretty top for a Video SLR, I was just wondering, how did you shoot the audio, sounds too clear for a camera mic, did you use solid state? or is there a audio in on the 7D?

Thanks
Simon Steele
November 4th, 2009 @ 2:18 am
I hope Sam wins.

The 7D footage looks great, any further comments since the video blog on it?

November 4th, 2009 @ 2:20 am

Hi AK,

You say you shot on Canon 7D? I have been looking into several cameras for good quality, but most of them are fairly expensive. Do you know of any cameras that produce great quality footage, but aren't TOO expensive?

Cheers, Nathanael

Nice. Is the jitter you speak of sometimes referred to as the Jelly effect? Isn't there an Anti-Jelly plug-in?
November 4th, 2009 @ 5:09 am
Was the audio done using an adapter on the 7D? (Beachtek, Juicedlink) etc. Or was it on an external machine?

It was sort of film like, but a bit echoy. Curious!

Better luck next time, Sammy-boy.

November 4th, 2009 @ 6:24 pm
I have a question regarding optical flares. Do anamorphic lens flares like that with all the artifacts and intricate reflections actually happen on real lenses or are they exaggerated in this plug-in? Do movie studios make their own flares or use the ones that actually occur on the lens?
russ
November 4th, 2009 @ 7:57 pm
Andrew, you mentioned new VideoCopilot hats in the last video-blog. Are those going to be available for purchase or where you just showing them say "we" (us here at VC) have new hats? thnx
November 4th, 2009 @ 9:51 pm
Tell Sam I said Great Job! ;-)
November 4th, 2009 @ 10:59 pm
Cool video,I like the quality of the camera.
November 5th, 2009 @ 12:04 am
this video very cool but he was need strong movement to be appered like his Resistance but the after effect like blode and video setting is wonderful
November 5th, 2009 @ 12:15 am
Sam, dude.. I think you are one hell of an actor... I think i heard on the first video copilot series that you were on 24, the first season or something. Back then i didnt know you but ill make sure i check it out.
I like how it really looks like you are resisting pointing the gun to yourself and i love the hilarious (well...i find it hilarious) facial expression that the evil you has just as you are about to pint the gun at yourself.

That was an awesome video... you guys as VC rule!
Wassup Andrew! :-)

November 5th, 2009 @ 12:35 am
For perfection, you should make damages on the surfaces where bullet ricochates (After it hits the surface).
Also, it's not logical that bullet ricochates from leather sleeve.
Otherwise very cool...

Bye the way, am i the only one from Macedonia???

Hi

Andrew or somebody might be able to help me out here. I am experimenting with the Nikon D300s HD Video options.

Anything I shoot, whether indoors or outdoors is always very noisy, a lot of grain and also jumpy. I know this camera can produce super HD video also, but I need some advice on the correct settings required?

Cheers

November 6th, 2009 @ 2:29 am
It should turn out that..the good Sam is actually the bad Sam and the Bad Sam is actually the Good Sam. The next part should go back in time to explain how they got mixed up.......... maybe a Mission Impossible effect where the bad Sam peels off his face to reveal Andrew????
November 6th, 2009 @ 5:20 am

Great stuff as always! and funny too lol
my only smallest complain is that
there should be some kind of burn mark after the bullet bounce off the metals... but that shot is like .5 sec so doens't matter =P

what camera did you use? the quality is awesome!
Phil
November 6th, 2009 @ 11:12 am

November 6th, 2009 @ 1:55 pm
This video is really unrealistic, there is no way that Sam could be killed by just a bullet
November 6th, 2009 @ 4:10 pm
Hahahaha! Sam couldn't take it anymore. The exhaust wasn't fast enough to kill him, so he whipped out a huge, friggen gun!!! Awesome! Poor Sam.

I had a good look at that camera. Its amazing, 1920x1080 res at 24p. The sensor is huge on it too. I'm really thinking of getting it to use along side a larger XL H2 for tight angles and close ups. You need Canon sponsorship Andrew!!

You've stated that it was the 50mm 1.4 lens but previously introduced the 7D with the cheap 50mm 1.8 MK2...as the 1.4 is around 3x the price I just wanted to check which lens it was.

I've got the 50mm 1.8 and 500d, the quality is astounding.
