Watch Sam VS Sam, a video we featured in our last Blog Show. The show also included behind the scenes footage and some added commentary.

Video Notes for the gear-junkies: We shot this scene using the canon 7D and a 50mm 1.4 lens. For the close POV style shots we shot with the standard 18-55mm lens. To avoid jitter we shot on a tripod for most of the scene and then added some wiggle inside AE. The scene was shot with 2 350 Arri lights.

The end scene was created using a blood element from Action Essentials 2. You may also be interested in this video from a while ago.

You've stated that it was the 50mm 1.4 lens but previously introduced the 7D with the cheap 50mm 1.8 MK2...as the 1.4 is around 3x the price I just wanted to check which lens it was.

I've got the 50mm 1.8 and 500d, the quality is astounding.

I had a good look at that camera. Its amazing, 1920x1080 res at 24p. The sensor is huge on it too. I'm really thinking of getting it to use along side a larger XL H2 for tight angles and close ups. You need Canon sponsorship Andrew!!

Best evil eye ever. Only Sam could pull off such a decidely accurate shot without even thinking about it. He needs an agent so he can start getting blown up in michael bay movies. Go Sam!

Hahahaha! Sam couldn't take it anymore. The exhaust wasn't fast enough to kill him, so he whipped out a huge, friggen gun!!! Awesome! Poor Sam.

Hmmm.....for some reason I only get a green screen when trying to watch the video. I downloaded and installed the latest plugins. No change.

Great stuff as always! and funny too lol
my only smallest complain is that
there should be some kind of burn mark after the bullet bounce off the metals... but that shot is like .5 sec so doens't matter

what camera did you use? the quality is awesome!

It should turn out that..the good Sam is actually the bad Sam and the Bad Sam is actually the Good Sam. The next part should go back in time to explain how they got mixed up.......... maybe a Mission Impossible effect where the bad Sam peels off his face to reveal Andrew????

Hi

Andrew or somebody might be able to help me out here. I am experimenting with the Nikon D300s HD Video options.

Anything I shoot, whether indoors or outdoors is always very noisy, a lot of grain and also jumpy. I know this camera can produce super HD video also, but I need some advice on the correct settings required?

For perfection, you should make damages on the surfaces where bullet ricochates (After it hits the surface).
Also, it's not logical that bullet ricochates from leather sleeve.
Otherwise very cool...

Sam, dude.. I think you are one hell of an actor... I think i heard on the first video copilot series that you were on 24, the first season or something. Back then i didnt know you but ill make sure i check it out.
I like how it really looks like you are resisting pointing the gun to yourself and i love the hilarious (well...i find it hilarious) facial expression that the evil you has just as you are about to pint the gun at yourself.

That was an awesome video... you guys as VC rule!

I have a question regarding optical flares. Do anamorphic lens flares like that with all the artifacts and intricate reflections actually happen on real lenses or are they exaggerated in this plug-in? Do movie studios make their own flares or use the ones that actually occur on the lens?

Was the audio done using an adapter on the 7D? (Beachtek, Juicedlink) etc. Or was it on an external machine?

It was sort of film like, but a bit echoy. Curious!

You say you shot on Canon 7D? I have been looking into several cameras for good quality, but most of them are fairly expensive. Do you know of any cameras that produce great quality footage, but aren't TOO expensive?

Did happen to notice sa was missing on the cut at about oh :17 when sam is pointing the gun in his mouth.

After watching this a few times now and the shot from behind Sam with the gun, as he tries to prevent it turning on him (0:19-00:20)... I can't help it but Evil Sam should be in the shot, it's as if Sam is actually on his own is a warehouse.

Andrew, you really have got to make more of these shorts, no tutorial required, just let others work it out for themselves, a bit like homework... Would love a 7D myself

@Ennis Buchi:. Too be honest, if a bullet hit that many objects on it's way from gun to head, I very much doubt it would cause a fatal wound, so had it put a bullet hole in the shovel, it would have stopped there.

This is great Andrew. Just a suggestion: if you want to get detailed with it, put a bullet hole or make a bit damage on the shovel at 00:28 after the bullet glide on it..

Hey Andrew and all the others with a Canon 7D or 5DMkII. I just found a video on how you can increase the dynamic range of your camera. His examples are a bit over the top (regarding the saturation) but it is amazing what you can achieve with that little thing.

Why wouldn't you use the 7D? Sure it's an SLR camera, but it's got more professional, cinematic qualities to its image than any other prosumer cameras. I'd say its pros outweigh its cons by a longshot. The average viewer can't tell the difference between 7D/5D footage or RED.

I keep hearing that people have trouble colour correcting the footage from it though.

I liked the extra addition of the ricochet having an effect on the environmen, but I almost think that there should be some sort of scorch or indentation on the surface which it encounters.
