Here is a little test I made using CC Particle World and some vector blur to make Fire. It’s not perfect but an interesting study. One of the key things I did was used a wiggle expression on the particle birthrate to give a variable emission pattern like something was burning inconsistently. It’s a little slow to render but it is very high resolution.
Essentially it is 3D, although I haven’t tested it much for things like looking down on it… Currently it is only for AE CS3 but an After Effects tutorial may be possible in the future.

Looks nice!!!
“Look I have made FIRE !!!” – Tom Hanks. Woooo thanks for giving us the gift us fire Mr. Kramer
You ROCK!
sweet andrew.. grettings from netherlands
Cool! Thank you!
awesome, I’ve wanted something like this for a while!
Very nice!
What timing. I was actually starting to work on a shot for my reel that involved flames igniting from a person’s hands. I think I know how to approach it but it’d be cool to see another perspective on it.
fire ill teach you to burn
any more news on Pro Scores???
Thanks for the fire project. I am still working on a fire design that started with the energy tutorial using CC Particle world with faded lens particles and a smoke like background.
thanks
Now I know why I bought all those products
thanks Andrew
That’s hot.
Thanks, Andrew!
Hmm very interesting.
wow…looks so real bro!!!!
WOOOW! can’t wait for tutorial!!!
Andrew, the link to video is broken, check please, thanks.
Lovely. I think I shall download this a play with it a bit.
thanks for the constant updates…and for the fire.
Hey Andrew…Did you use the method mentioned on the forums a few weeks ago?
Fire looks nice BTW
thanks it look really nice ..i have after effects cs3 but it says that its edited with after effects version and couldnt be opened with this version of after effects (my after effects cs3 version 7.0)
thanks it look really nice ..i have after effects cs3 but it says that its edited with after effects version 8.0 and couldnt be opened with this version of after effects (my after effects cs3 version 7.0)
Very cool. I opened in AE CS4 on the Mac with no problem. I’m amazed at how simple it is given how cool it is!
Wow, this looks cool. You are a genius. Thank you.
An amazing comp Kramer, very fluid and natural and wow, you are the man when it comes to taking AE to its max
Andrew is on Fire! Thanks man
I agree with Bones up there about the hand on fire thing. That’s something I’ve been tinkering with but it’s obviously not an exact science. If you could try something with engulfing someone’s hand, like on Heroes, I can guarantee you will make a LOT of people happy =)
Peace bro
Nice Freebie AK!! We appreciate it! I’m looking forward to spending some $$$ on those scores though! Thanks for all your hard work –
I just watched your fire clip..and yeah man that’s damn sexy
Thanks you rock
For some reason I can’t seem to find CC particle world to buy it. Did they change the name? Suggestions? Went to the developers website. Couldn’t find it there for some reason.
Please be careful when playing with fire, you remember what happened to Prometheus!!!!
That looks spectacular… I will be playing with this for a while.
/$& THIS IS GREAT ANDREW YOU DONT KNOW HOW MUCH I NEED SOME FIRE FOR A PROJECT!!!!
THANKS ALOT

Combine this with the escaping soul tutorial and you can breathe fire!
if the flames could cause a light effect inside a room – that would be cool. You know how a flame looks inside a dark room where it flickers here and there….
That’s pretty cool
AWW I have CS4
Nice work! Thanks again
Angel, It should work with CS4…
Too bad it doesn’t look that realistic.
…
..
.
Yeah right!
It looks freakin’ fantastic! I even put an ending apostrophe on my ‘freakin’, and I NEVER do that! (That’s just how impressed I am!)
Looks realy great! The best fire made in AE i have seen so far, and i`ve seen em all
Thanks VCP!
Hey how do you take video for custom smoke effects. I don’t know how to film it.
Just reviewed the fire Project file – it cant be that good!
Even in quarter resolution it looks better then any AE fire I ever tried – and only with 4 layers! Some frames even look to me like a painting style.
I feel so numb right now – I think I´ll stop Motiongraphics, sell my PCs and try me tomorrow in Basketball or so…
Hi Ziran,
one way you could do it:
Film it against a black screen and use the Add or Screen Blendingmode for your smoke layer than in AE – That will subtract the dark wall.
Also theere is a plugin called “unmult” (which is freeware),it was made especially for removing blacks, its a no brainer to use!
Ask the Question again in the Forum, I am shure you will get a lot of help there!
Hello Andrew, I’m not sure if it was on this site or not, But I recall seeing a video you posted about good compositing in after effects. The movie was about a team that I guess was Ireland and they were moving across a area when they heard sniper shots and saw a mirror up in a sniper tower. At one point I guess the sargeant in charge got his legs blown off by a grenade or land mine. It might have been on Machinima.com im not sure but if you posted it will you please try to find it and re port it. I thought that video was amazing. Thanks ahead of time.
thank u Andrew!!!!!! keep up the good work!!!!!
Looks OK
Thank you!
That is HOT
Good Andrew, greetings from Chile!

Please send me a copy of Pro Scores for unearthing this revelation! JK
HELL YES !!
I ONLY JUST UPGRADED TO CS4 YESTERDAY !!
THANKS XD
I think these are sometimes more valuable than tutorials
why is it not working on CS4?
Holy Cow Andrew!! i was just going to ask for a Fire tutorial!! you read my freaking mind!!! fire tutorials please!!!
I think you read all of our minds with this one!
It seems to be great
Awesome!
very nice , cool & so hot
Great Andrew…. Thanks!
Glad you guys like it, I’ll have to start uploading more tests. I do so many…
How do they create realistic fire in movies? Maya?
There are different ways, you might want to check out Fume FX.
cheers Andrew. think i’ve seen that plugin around, i’m studying animation at university so hopefully i’ll be able to get my hands on it in max
Yeah andrew!
Fume FX is one of the best way to make realistic fire, good job in AE!

“It’s a little slow to render but it is very high resolution.”
but? — because!
BTW
, it looks so cool even though you may want to use stock footage to create realistic fire, its awesome if you haven´t stock footage available or just with the use of Titles and stuff like that!
I 1 2 c more tests of yours!
Wow, its a pretty though to render it kinda heavy with particles :p
wow awesome !!!
I wait for the tutorial, I have AE 7 Pro, not CS3
Congratulations
Thomas A.
you know what Andrew…
when I saw you use the Vector Blur on the previous thing, I was thinking it would be a great look for water…
but I would have never thought to try it for fire….
how did you get so smart?????
This is awesome man i already done 6 or so test videos using this effects in it
Epic as all ways. Keep up the good work.
Wait, how the, you are the man. I have CS3 and I’ve been experimenting myself on how to create fire. Here you are mastering it like nothing. Dude you are the man and you deserve every penny of your work.

Looks great Andrew! I’ve been looking for a fire effect for a while. Please make a tutorial compatible with cs2. Thank you so much!
As i am a stingy person, i haven’t bought most of your packs of stock footage, but to put an editable fire effect like this on the web…for free? most sites would charge some ludicrous amount, but this is great. Thanks for all you have done for the online compositing community.
Absolutely beautiful
That’s pretty cool
Man! Usually I’m pretty good at picking apart your projects to see what you did, but this one blows me away.
It looks really really nice. Thanks so much so inspiring us yet again
By the way guys, in case you missed it this effect is *fully 3D*!
http://allenellis.com/public/FIRE-3D.mov
I added a jump-back in the background for reference. Pretty sweet
.
hi this is sahul

i like the vortex by the way…
very nice Mr. Kramer!
Thanks so much for sharing this.
It won’t open for CS4 for me.
Thank you!
like real fire…so nice
WOW! that’s a damn good attempt! thank you!!
Andrew you are the man! You know whats funny? This is a study of fire effects, but it already looks better than all fire after effects tutorials out there. Great Work!
This is impossible. A few days earlier some team asked me to do a video and they wanted fire in it!!
Thanks so much. I tried the Particular Fire preset but this seems to look better!
Filip from belgium.
Hey Andrew, i would be really happy if you could make a tutorial how to make such a fire with trapcode particular!
still nice stuff as always
Hey Andrew, I like what you and your crew do very much, this is my first reply but i’ve been watching your tutorials from the beginning i’ve seen you mature and your work with it.Let me give you one lesson.
Alway’s put your family first.
With their support you will never fail.
gr Ralph from the Netherlands
It is a very cool effect, but there are some programs that can produce such an effect with less effort like Wondertouch particle illusion, or what do you think?
…and they said it couldn’t be done without trapcode
Awesome effect. ^_^
Very Nice effect !!
Thank you Andrew
I like the vortex too !
Let it burn mate.
it’s perfect
Thank you Andrew
Nice…. I’ve always wanted to make AE fire. Thanks!
-David
hey andrew…great job with the tutorials…i’ve really learnt alot,, i was wandering if you cud make a music video tutorial with any of the cool effects available
you are going to become a legend.
Wow, this is brilliant Andrew thanks. I’ve been trying to make realistic looking fire for my brother’s band’s logo, now I’ve finally made it thanks to your amazing skills. I also used the ‘free pizza’ method you used too to add extra coolness to my logo.
I’ll post a link to it once it’s online for you to see
)
Here’s my logo using these techniques…

Thanks again Andrew.
I recently bumped into this site, and its amazing. Thank you Andrew, you surely deserve some donation for all your work that you are sharing.
A question that I have been thinking alot about:
Is it “legal” to follow your tutorials and then when its finished, can you sell it and make money out of it? Im only 15, so its nothing i can do, but Ive been thinking that it would be an easy way for people to just follow ur great tutorials, and then sell the high quality stuff they get from following the tutorials.
Thanks, Tim
I’d say that depends on the tutorial/site. Some places state that you can use the works in your own work and get paid for them, others say you can’t.
Oh, the link above of mine doesn’t work, damn youtube deleted the vid for some reason so I re-uploaded it…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azASujLrpu4
What about this site, Doogle?
Nice… Luckily, I’m upgrading to CS4 (from AE 7) at the end of the month so I’ll be able to open these projects.
I’ve actually been downloading these projects and’ll be so excited when I upgrade, this is AWESOME!
-David
I found an answer for my question, its smart to read the FAqs before you ask questions, thats what ive learnt today!
