Isn't it possible to get the project file ?
I've been doing this tutorial 3 times and never get the same result as Andrew, although i put the same value everywhere.
It seems some adjustments are missing in the video ! :(

For some reason, I have gone through this tutorial 5 times now and always end up losing the metallic look of the text about halfway through and I have no idea where. I am using CS6 and even went so far as to download the font Andrew used in the tutorial but still, the shiny metalness of it went away. (and of course the 3 times AE crashed and I lost it all).

I want to get this right so i can keep it to one side as a template. I love the look of it. so either a project file with the AE project in it so i can play with it or someone is good enough to upload a project file would be amazing. (then maybe i can figure out where my shine went!).

REALLY looking forward to part 2

excellent tutorial... Pity the project file is not included, coz i don't know why when i follow step by step the tutorial (even put video on pause to be sure to have the same values) there is a moment the grunge effect disappear ! :(

Andrew, I recently stopped paying for my Adobe Creative Cloud suite, and I find myself missing After Effects greatly. Even though I don't have the program anymore, I find myself watching your tutorials in their entirety! Keep up the good work, can't wait to see chapter two!

I had gotten errors when extracting the zip file as well. While the folder showed all of the files, all but the 4 were corrupt. I downloaded again and was able to view 7, then 4 again, and finally all of them. Not sure why but after a few tries was able to extract all of them.
    Try again and good luck.

You're amazing and your team!, and also it amazes me that the core effects in AE have these parameters that you almost feel the core programmers wanted to make these specific effects you make, but couldn't initially, so their team rebuilt them to accomplish these some what specific effects, but (x3) then you just sorta know, that they had no such intention and it's a paradox, but (#4) it's obviously not? Or is it? Who are you==they really?

It must have been cold there in my shadow,
To never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way.
You always walked a step behind.
So I was the one with all the glory,
While you were the one with all the strength.
A beautiful face without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain.
Did you ever know that you're my hero,
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings.
It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
But I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.
Did you ever know that you're my hero?
You're everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings.
Did I ever tell you you're my hero?
You're everything, everything I wish I could be.
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, the wind beneath my wings.
You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings.
Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.
Fly, fly, fly high against the sky,
So high I almost touch the sky.
Thank you, thank you,
Thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.

Amazing that AE's potential can be unlimited with the right creativity, even with no plug-in's. I appreciate the effort to show this with no plug-in's, but how long would the tutorial be if we just used Element 3D? In other words, who would use this method if you already owned E3D?
    Kevin
Show the new people to AE how to do it this way, then show them your paid plug-in or other assets you sell on your site. It's marketing at its best. Just like drugs, the first sample is free.
    Simon
Andrew gets paid from Adobe as well...don't forget, he's rightly plugging (pardon the pun) Adobe After Effects capabilities, it is a step-back, doing the fake 3-D thing when you've got E3D- but its great, can't wait for the procedural Decay -Part 23 of his tutorial that DOES look like witchcraft - lol
    3 weeks ago
Yes, please. Try to do those animated dents or those decay animations with Element 3D, Jeff. Let's see what happens.
    Duncan
Sadly, Element doesn't have the option to add the angled bevel that this shows. It's just extrudes straight back.

Hi Jeff. And here we are using the most advanced 3d plugin E3D. But if we see the E3D exactly there are a lot of limitations. If you are using a mid range PC for editing, the chances for AE to crashed is lot as the load will increase while we use E3D and this is my personal idea all about the E3D.
    LWAddict
E3D can't do animated dents or decay...
Element doesn't have the option to add the angled bevel...
sounds like a lot of people haven't learned much from Andrew's lead.
Quit looking for the "magic button" and just play with the settings.
    You're both wrong.
Element certainly DOES do angled bevels!
I'm afraid I'm right, LWAddict. I didn't say you can't add decay in Element. Please, read carefully. I know Element 3D and its limitations pretty well, but thank you for your concern. And yes, of course you can do really complex bevels in E3D, Duncan. Check out the early E3D tutorials.
I hear what you're saying, but I saw this as a backup in case you had some sort of unexpected glitch with E3D. I think some of the multi-bevels shown are unique to this technique. More so, I feel there are techniques here that give a deeper insight into how AE filters/procedural effects work. Things that allow you to see other possibilities beyond the final product shown.

really cool technique, this actually makes me think that one thing nobody's asked you during your the recent many interviews is how you come up with these techniques. I think that beside of the results you get - which are great btw - it is the ideas themselves that are really very impressive. Of course it comes with lots of experimenting and experience, but yet I think it is a particular talent as I know quite a few smart and experienced ae users but no-one has this kind of deep knowledge and approach. And also, since this discovery of new cool applications for built-in effects obviously takes some time to experiment and you are a rather busy guy, where the hell do you find the time?? Without considering that you have a pretty large family which - just to be made - needs some time and dedication.

Chapeau Mr Kramer.
