Yo Andrew! Where are all the Tutorials!?! A reasonable question actually. I don’t have a simple answer but maybe I can share a bit of my process with you. This year I’ve been working on a bunch of amazing content for Video Copilot! My goal was to dig deep into default plug-ins and try to […]

I must confess… I was never a big fan of shape layers…  we just didn’t get along.  I was used to using masks but suddenly (around AE CS3) the same mask tool began creating Red vector shapes. I wish to echo most of the comments here of saying thanks for helping those who either don't know (like me) or wish to upgrade their skills and try and just do things better. Although I am using Hitfilm 2017 a lot transfers in knowledge. Just have to figure it all out. If you wander around Africa way (Malawi) give me a shout.

Here is my roof top using Andrew's tutorial. I scattered a few motion design 2 clothes around to make it look messy. The only trouble I had was the reflection. No matter what I tried I could not get the reflection to look right. I even tried using a textured plane and still could not get it right so I left it without reflecting the background, only the buildings.

I concerted the OBJ models to C4D and re-textured them...very easy to do. But I did notice that the pipe supports in Rooftop Pipes use a texture called "Rooftop AirDucts 01". This can't be right? Is a texture missing from the pack?

What would keyboard modifier be that does that ANCHOR trick Andrew did in the video?
Yes, I realize Andrew has the Pan Behind tool selected, but moving the layer around the anchor point to match his feet isn't happening with either CMD or OPTION and dragging like in the video. Moving the Anchor itself screws things up with world placement.

I might have to take to the forums for this, but I'm finding whenever I try to use a model from the pack, Element crashes with a 56mb log dump. The preview window for the model in E3D is horribly scrambled and the comp window shows vague, discolored remnants of the model. Occasionally I'll get an error about layers being too many for my video settings and when I close AE, I get the message "aegp plugin element leaked effect refs"

Nvidia drives are up to date for a brand spankin new GTX950. Other objects work fine.

Very nice tut. I'm curious to know what method you would have used to add shadow and reflections from the Sam footage, to the E3D layer. I've needed that myself in the past and had to rig it once the camera move was made. I used flipped layers with masks which didn't make my method exactly flexible should I needed to change the camera.

I don't think there is a better way to do it at the moment. If E3D were to accept diffuse maps with alpha channels, you could just create Sam's plane in Element, similar with how Andrew created the ground plane (add the diffuse as custom layer), But since you can't do that .. the only thing you can do is duplicate and scale the layer (-100% vertically), pull down the opacity. If you want an improved effect, you can also duplicate the Element layer, place the roof plane's texture to illumination and use it as a luma matte for your reflection.
    Hello Christian
I actually did something like that a while ago. Only with non-Element 3D roof top, but it should work.
Make the keyed character 3D and move it into the correct 3D space position. Add a white surface below to catch shadows from lights - use multiply mode to hide the surface.
Reflection works nicely, if you make/key a matte from the 3D surface and flip the character vertically. I did some puddle reflections this way.
Everything obeys camera if your position is correct.

    Cheers.
    LWAddict
I've used VC Reflect for this... Take it down to black, add opacity and blur if needed and BAM, shadow. I think you could probably use Sam's footage on a plane within E3d and get the full monty, just haven't done it yet.
Alex, Jari & LWA thanks for taking the time.
Looks like we all would (and have) attacked the same challenge by the same methods. Rigging it lol

As we all know, the challenge comes when you have a camera move and the duplicated flipped layers, with opacity changes need to look more natural and begin to get obscured by 3D objects in the scene. I found VC reflect kinda works until you have a camera turn, or the footage is moving then it gets a little. Off and KeyframesRus is underway. THEN youre locked into you camera move.

I did actually contact the support team last year as I was trying to add my live person footage to an E3D plane and change the alpha. They could see the challenge I had and confirmed with the detail and movement in the live footage (swaying long hair in wind) this technique wouldnt work.

I was just curious to know how AK pulled off the shot as in the promo, Sam has a shadow that moves with him when he jumps off the building, although there isnt a camera movement that makes things easier.
Maybe AK used the same method as we have all along.

Are you using Element 2? You can use a precomp'd keyed footage as an 'Element > Custom Layers > Custom Texture Maps'.

In your Element scene, create a plane and for its material (you can use standard shader) set the Diffuse texture to your Custom Layer, check 'Advanced/Matte Alpha', and wiggle Alpha Threshold to clean up artifacts. http://i.imgur.com/31vDb0h.png
