New Tutorial: Sub Surface Skin

In this exciting new tutorial we’ll create the look of sub-surface illumination inspired by the film Iron Man 3. After building some procedural noise maps we’ll add some vein textures to create more realistic depth. Many great tips in this one!

Nice tutorial but a little sloppy on the mocha side ;) Since the screepcapture cropped your screen it wasn't clear if you used the perspective option. I would recommend people to take a look at this (quite simmilar) tutorial for some additional techniqes and a little clearer approach: http://ae.tutsplus.com/tutorials/vfx/how-to-suck-energy-out-of-someones-veins/

This comment, coupled with the lack of a 'like' button has just given me an idea.

Andrew (or VC Crew member), implementing a promote button of some description in the comments would allow the VC community to 'vote' for the best (and most thoughtful) selection of thoughts and ideas. Jus' sayin'.

P.S: I haven't got a clue how it would be done but hey... :D

Question: Why didn't you use the AE camera tracker? Doesn't the new CC tracker pinpoint areas to track too?
    July 9th, 2013 @ 7:55 pm
Never mind. I answered my own question by recreating what you did using my hubby's face. This Mocha Tracker is much more precise for capturing the surface.

I'm still new to AE (I only know enough to be dangerous). Sorry for the noob question.

Why are so many AE tutorials using tracking in Mocha instead of 3D Camera Tracker from CS6? 3D Camera Tracker is sooo much easier to use.
    JMLorenz
    July 9th, 2013 @ 9:42 pm
3D camera tracker can't really track faces as far as I know. Mocha is a planar tracker, which can track planes, and doesn't rely on points as much, or at all. To track a face in AE you would most likely use a point tracker, not a 3D tracker. In fact you typically want to mask out movement for a 3D tracker so you get an accurate track.
    July 9th, 2013 @ 10:54 pm
I wondered the same thing, until I recreated what Andrew did and found the AE Camera Tracker wouldn't work. Like JMLorenz said, Mocha does a better job for faces.
    Peter Holmes
    July 11th, 2013 @ 1:44 am
easy to use, yes; but its sh|te. Face tracking needs a proper matchmove (PF Track, Syntheyes) and I suspect the goal is to keep expensive third party software out of the project. Mocha is perfectly adequate for this type of track on this plate.
July 9th, 2013 @ 10:54 pm

Hey Andrew, any chance you share your thoughts about the new ADOBE RETAL MODEL?
    Remington M
    July 10th, 2013 @ 5:11 pm
I have a feeling Andrew is living by the "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all" rule. Or "Don't bite the hand that feeds you"

Is Adobe's move wrong? In my opinion yes. However it would be bad business for Andrew to be speaking out against it, and I'd much prefer his silence versus the load of crap everyone else is putting out in support of the creative cloud.
    Daluz
    July 10th, 2013 @ 5:31 pm
Yeah, I think the same, but everyone else said something about it -Maltaannon, John Dickinson (Motionworks),Aharon Rabinowitz and others, and I just think its strange Andrew didnt said a word about...Well, but he said Videocopilot will keep doing plugins and stuff for CS6!
    Peter Holmes
    July 11th, 2013 @ 1:39 am
VCP doesn't owe Adobe anything - the opposite is true if you think of how the site elevates the status of After Effects and much free promotion they get.

Each to their own I say. Let those who want to make protestations, get on and do so and don't berate those who choose to keep their own counsel.
    Daluz
    July 11th, 2013 @ 6:02 am
Yes you are right, but I think you got me wrong, I m just asking a question, and "berate" is not the right word. We are talking about After Effects. I mean this site is about After Effects, and I just wonder "Hey you know that you CAN NOT BUY After Effects anymore? What do you think about it?" Simple as that. Like I said before Videocopilot/Andrew Kramer rules and Im a big fan...To tell you the truth, maybe deep inside, I m just trying to tease Andrew to come up with an VIDEOCOPILOT VFX SOFT :)
    All the best.
    Matt D
    July 26th, 2013 @ 11:31 pm
You never could buy After Effects. You merely bought the license to use it. The new adobe model is excellent. Unlimited installs, 2 active log ins, and fast incremental updates and features. And of course access to the entire product range
    Brian
    July 28th, 2013 @ 11:32 pm
It's not "buying" After Effects that concerns me, as you so rightly pointed out; we only license it. What burns me about the new subscription model that is that it constricts my access to content I created (loss of access to project files should the subscription lapse) AND that it costs more than previous upgrade paths, even if you upgraded with each iteration. It's really only a good deal for entry level consumers. As a longtime customer, it just comes off as a raw deal.

I mean this in the most complimentary way, but this tutorial is almost frustratingly simple. You go into it expecting some huge, complicated method of an advanced effect, and in 20 minutes he bangs it out with nothing more than a 2D motion track, some simple compositing, and fractal noise. Unbelievable. Kramer, you never cease to amaze me.

Yes !!! And most good feautures of the all softwares under Adobe CC are fast and came with new prestes and tools and plugin including Aftereffect's new feauture too :]
If you ahve minimum 8 or 12 GB RAM ; then its good for you to use CC version. Cause it depens your CMP memory i guess.

If you mean the whole effect, try animating the opacity. Or animate a mask to start to appear, as if it were growing. If you are talking about the veins growing, you may need to get animated veins, and not just an image.

Prathamesh i been contacted by admins and people from you tube about your exploit with my 3d models can u please remove my models from your "rar" collection ? Im okey if u give them for free or give credits and don't say that u make them. I made them for everybody to share for free and you found them and than u asking people to subscribe to your Youtube "DreamWorld Prathamesh" in exchange for password. I made this models for http://tf3dm.com/3d-models/vehicles
    http://tf3dm.com/3d-models/vehicles
    http://tf3dm.com/3d-models/vehicles
    http://tf3dm.com/3d-models/vehicles
to share free not for you to exploit people with passwords to get subscribes. you can pack them together but than give them for free.. what u doing is sort of blackmail asking people to subscribe to you for exchange for password

    Try This:

Uninstall Max (all of it, components the lot)

Now reinstall, but when configuring locations to install to make sure you do not install 32 and 64 bit versions to the same location, otherwise windows will get confused at trying to load a 32 bit exe under 64 bit architecture rules. Try installing only one 32 or 64 bit

    Hope it helps

Having trouble with the mocha tracking. Once exported, the grid is nowhere near the tracking which is on the right side of the face

I understand that for someone working at Andrew's level it must be quite a challenge to keep the site or tutorials moving at the speed they had before, but on the positive side, what if other members of the videocopilot team made tutorials once in a while? Who would not be excited by a Sam Loya's tutorial? I would.

I loved this effect Im currently working on a production using this effect as a base but layering raised veins on top giving that look underneath the skin surface,Heres a look. https://scontent-b-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/v/1463016_10151974379847287_1369960691_n.jpg?oh=30b33c0e0772649433be22c113d44d0e&oe=527EBAFB

It doesn't work with CS5.5. When i paste tracking data on Illumination layer, it's all distorted and there is no way to correct it

I did it! In image it seems great but in video, the effect doesn't line with the actor's face. I dont know what to do. When I past the tracking data on the effect's composition, all the effect spread away. excuz my english because am french.
