Downloaded the update. Very cool......but I own cinema 4d and it doesn't support obj sequence export. Is there a other way to import animated sequences in element or only obj???
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 12:47 am
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 1:41 am
The Plexus-obj-sequence-exporter is well worth the money.
    wenluc
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 2:48 am
woohoo, it works! I was a little sceptic about the plugin. Because a saw somewhere that it didn't render faces of an obj. But it turned out that they updated the plexus plugin! Sorry to bother you guys! Love the update!

Riptide pro does this very well too: http://skinprops.com/riptidepro/index.htm

    January 23rd, 2013 @ 5:19 am
Hey Wenluc, I would hugely appreciate if you told me how you exported the sequence from Cinema to Element with the Plexus obj Exporter???

When ever i try, the obj sequence is flat in the element plugin, IE: No material gives it reflection, it does not have ambient occlusion in the comp or anything!!

    Am i missing something?

    Cinema 4D R14, CS6, E3D 1.5.
    wenluc
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 11:44 am
he Matt, have you applied a material to the object in cinema 4d?
    wenluc
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 12:07 pm
Matt, I see what you mean! I have the same problem. When I drop my pro shaders presets on the obj model it's just flat. I didn't see it before because I was to exited to test it out. So I just drop in a new material on a cube in C4D and animated it. Now I tested it........I guess.......there goes my money :-(
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 1:05 pm
The plexus exporter is good for point data used by plexus, but for Element it is has to render polygons. The issue is that it doesn't export the polygon normals for the models, so when you first import the sequence it will look grayed out (and I don't believe it has an option to export the normals). You can hit the auto-normals button in Element and it will generate normals and you can adjust the threshold to get it looking ok. But the auto-normals in Element could possibly bog down the speed of your project a bit if it has to do this for a 100 file-plus sequence, and sometimes may not look as desired. So far in my experience, the Riptide Pro plug-in does a better job as it has more export options (such as exporting normals, uvw coordinates, etc,). Not to say it doesn't have its own issues, but for the most part its does the job well. There's also a free trial period if you want to check it out, Elfedelaizk linked to it.

    January 23rd, 2013 @ 1:26 pm
Thnx guys! Already bought the plugin, haha. Riptide pro works excellent! Just a shame that I wasted my money on plexus. These two plugins together are almost worth a model pack from videocopilot ;-) but he at least I got it working now. So.....on with my project! And thnx again.
    Matt
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 11:27 pm
Wenluc yeah me too, I purchased the plexus OBJ exporter, as I aslo use plexus, but Im sad to see having Element use Auto Normals can slow down the scene!! Does the Riptide Pro Plugin work well with Cinema R14? This plugin however, is now, for me since the obj sequence, its the bridge my workflow has needed for many months!!! Big ups Kramer and crew!
    Matt
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 11:31 pm
Thanks Dustin for that info!! really Appreciate it! Do you use Riptide with Cinema R14?

Hello good people of videocopilot! Save your money and use free 3D software called "Blender". You can export your animation in obj sequence.

Amazing man, I did a 3d city scape once in maya and took weeks just to get the rendering looking right, next time I got some spare cash I'm going to buy Element 3D, Even though I have a masters in VFX using Nuke, I learnt AE through you and that's what I use most of the time. Your a Legend.

I am totally agree. I've been using Maya for more than five years and to see the final render or fix lightning with VRay or Mental Ray can take weeks to get it right, but this is helping workflow a lot. Thank Andrew and the team who make this happend. Will be nice Andrew if you expose them so we can know who is behind the Element 3D.

I have CS6, the new updated Element 1.5 - I use Cinema 4D R14 with the Latest Plexus obj exporter that is Compatible with R14, I export a 100 frame OBJ sequence, import to element perfectly, but the OBJ sequence in Element is flat, there is no material, and if I apply a material to it nothing happens? Absolutely no shading, it doesnt have ambient occlusion nothing! Is this a big waste of my money?

Andrew,
thanks for the great 1.5 patch!!!

Unfortunately, I have found out that the problem with the lights (more than 6 lights won´t work - textures/materials will be colored/lighted wrong) still exists.

Will this "bug" be solved in v2.0?

Why Element cannot handel the 16'' / 20'' file for a magazine cover.
when i open it it do crash (WHOLE AFTEREFFECT)
says - element cannot suport this resolution.
Not even in this new 1.5 version.
I thought you guys fixed that bug i mention nearly 5 times in comments everywhere previously :(
    mc01
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 6:00 pm
Confused - Are you trying to import a magazine cover image for use in video, or trying to output 3D stuff from Element for use in a print cover?

Using a ~300dpi print-res image anywhere in AE is likely to suck up available memory, because each frame can only handle so much. This has nothing to do w/Element - it's a limitation of AE and a result of you using the wrong image format. If you're trying to create a video showing the magazine cover, you'd first need to convert the print-res magazine cover image to screen-resolution. It can still be a high-res/lossless TIFF or PSD, but save it at 72dpi instead of 300.

If you mean you want to export something from Element to include in the printed cover, you need to create just the 3D at whatever size you need, and integrate it in Photoshop, or Illustrator, or a program actually meant for print graphics.

Amazing pack and update! A suggestion for a new pack, I had to make a couple of commercials with gears and I did them in 3ds Max. Having a gears pack available would have made life a lot easier. Keep up the great work!

What type of gears Chad ???
In the motion design graphics pack there are loads of machine parts etc etc??
    Chad
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 10:36 am
Slogan. Thanks for the reply! I do have that pack but the project I was working on required a BUNCH of different gears that I had to make in 3DS Max. It would have been so much easier to have a pack and use AE instead. :)
    Daniel
    January 24th, 2013 @ 6:08 am
You could have always exported the gears out of 3ds Max and used them in Element? Considering you've already made the gears, would save you having to buy a pack that VC probably wouldn't release anyways.

Alain, are you making a Resident Evil fan film or something, I'd like the MET pack but I need element 3d 1.0 and 1.5 first. Lack of money gets in the way everytime. It will be mine....oh yes it will be mine. Mr A Kramer, get buddying up with Mr JJ Abrams as he's working on the new Star Wars. Your lightsaber tutorial could come in handy for it. ;)

Andrew,
Looks fantastic, and I'll definitely be purchasing within a few weeks. One question though, in your demo of the Metropolitan pack you showed us how to use the "prebuilt city" models (and tile them.) In that section there are a series of empty road/street blocks. I was wondering if you might be able to demo/explain how one could easily add buildings to these empty sections to create custom city blocks. Would one simply draw a custom shape, place that in 3D space, and then use that for the particle generator on top of the block?

Thanks for all of your hard work/advice. Love your stuff!

-Lee
    Ray
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 11:21 am
you could have the empty block on Group 1 and add separate buildings on different groups and place them where you like.

But I wonder about the Ae templates mentioned in the video. Where does it install them?
Michelle
January 23rd, 2013 @ 12:29 pm
Has anyone else had issues with the new update messing up aspect ratios? I was using Element v1.03 in a 1440 x 1080 comp with an aspect ratio of 1.33 to match the video I was editing it into and when I installed the update the Element animation became stretched. I ended up having to revert back to the old version so I don't lose all the work I did. It's really going to suck if the update messes up all the aspect ratios on my old projects.

Hey Mr Kramer! Are there any plans on you guys releasing a more 'European' style collection of buildings? As much as I would like your pack, it doesn't look anything like a London landscape. Your buildings are too new! :(
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 2:22 pm
Would love to! We will look into this for sure.
    Lee
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 2:55 pm
I second this. A colonial/European pack would be great. A lot of these buildings don't work for cities like DC/Boston/Philly etc. They're too 'new'. That said, they do look fantastic.
    Ubiq
    January 23rd, 2013 @ 11:57 pm
Yeah I'd love a European city pack as well. Metropolitan automatically places the scene in the US or maybe one of the huge Asian innercities. There is no city in Europe that looks like this, with all the ornaments on centuries old houses you'll find in European inner cities, the ancient civil buildings, catheadrals, old churches, and what not.

These products are INSANE. The gratitude to VideoCopilot for what they due is impossible to quantify..singlehandedly motivated me to move from traditional graphic design to motion graphics.

@Andrew Kramer - I think the Metropolitan promo or page mentioned pre-built cityscapes...are these completely fictional or do they have loose resemblance to actual cities? Same goes for the building models...any actual representations of real world buildings are just all original VC creations?

Either way, SICK, SICK STUFF! Impossible to even comprehend all the possibilities.

For some reason the update seems to lock up or I cant see the Element interface now, and its super aggravating... I click on edit scene and its like the window is there 'somewhere' but I cant see it anywhere.

ugh.
    January 24th, 2013 @ 12:03 am
Try holding down Shift and clicking on the scene setup to reset the window position.

Nice job with the update!
Does the OBJ sequences support motion blur?
    January 24th, 2013 @ 1:57 am
Since OBJ sequences do not contain sub-frames for interpolation so we recommend using a plug-in called Realsmart Motion Blur for adding motion blur. It's quite fast and inexpensive from revisionfx.com

OBJ sequences are cool, but why did Point cache? Problems with motion blur would not, and do not use the plug Realsmart Motion Blur. Will Point cache added in the next update? Thanks for the coolest plug Andrew :)

I tried to do the same (update the drivers) but i'm on a iMac and the only way that i know how to update drivers is through the software updater and it says no updates available. I already contacted support but if someone knows a workaround on this i would appreciate the help.

Hey Andrew,
Could you provide a tutorial or two on how to combine the buildings with real footage?
For example using a Helicopter flying through a street showing people walking, or someone standing on the roof of a building and you fly over and zoom into the person?
Darren

Hi Andrew,
I think there are so many more options now to think about.

How about:

Urban Packs ( Domestic houses, shops, parks, trees etc)
Sweets ( Candy )
Christmas Pack
Easter Pack
Office Pack ( Creating arrays of desks and Partitions etc, fly through a MET pack building into an Office Floor, SuperMarket )

Just a thought

Since updating yesterday, all my projects with Element in them won't render. I get a spinning pinwheel then a "AE not responding" in my Activity monitor. I tried rendering without any Element efx solids and I can render those. I have fixed my permissions and reloaded finder, but I am out of ideas... any suggestions?

One question: where do I find the 4k images, that Andrew uses in his tutorial, for the background and the environment? Is it in the metropolitan pack? And if yes, where? Any suggestion is appreciated. :)

Yeah, so I knew about the Glows added to 1.5, but when I saw the Obj sequence support I nearly collapsed out of my chair. I have a Maya/Vray project that I estimated an 11 DAY render for, or about $650 on rebusfarm. I couldn't use Element because about 15 seconds of the 5 minutes worth of frames would have deformation. Now it looks like you guys have saved me a bunch of time/money :) So thanks for that!

Hey Andrew, looks awesome but can you post up some images of how the metropolitan pack looks from the street level? Also is there any plans to release more buildings and such? Maybe a set of very run down buildings or buildings that are broken as you would see in a post-apocalptic setting. Keep up the good work!

January 24th, 2013 @ 11:28 am
Awesome pack. I was wondering for future tutorials if you could go over a method for breathing life into the city streets. Adding fractal noise for fast moving car headlights works ok, but it would be great to see a workflow for adding randomly generated particle people that stay between the buildings and have some depth.

Also would it be possible with future updates of element to incorporate some type of dynamic shift between wireframe and composite outputs? In the demo there is a fairly linear wipe between the two, but it would be great to see different sections of each building slowly form into the final texture. Thanks again for an amazing pack!

Can anyone help please?

I have downloaded the patch to upgrade my existing Element 3D. All my models and presets have disappeared from the E3D window.

I have not purchased Metropoloitan. Do I need this to make the patch work.

Many thanks and my apologies if I have missed the blindingly obvious :-)
    January 25th, 2013 @ 6:50 am
Did you install the V1.5 patch over your existing Element install, or did you uninstall element, and then install V1.5. I installed the patch over my existing Element & my presets stayed the same.

In the Element workspace, hold Shift and click File in the top left corner. You should see an option that says "Relink Presets", try that & see if it works! Good Luck!

If you mutli fracture an object, the plugin/way you fracture it keeps all the materials per face/polygon!! How do you get all this UVW data to element??? because element is only giving my UV mapping ability with OBJ sequence!! When i import my OBJ sequence into element, I texture/material the fracture OBJ sequence but when i RAM preview, the material looks as if it is "slipping" through the material? (in a frontal mapping sort of way?
so confused! been through a whole day of fracturing baking and exporting! haha

Just been getting back into Heroes Season 1, and there is a nice explosion of New York because of a bomb going off (not saying no more due to spoilers) would it be possible to have the buildings in the Met pack shatter as if an A bomb has destroyed them? maybe a destruction building pack would be cool too.

Hi, big fan and daily user of element! VC team, I have a problem adding materials now in 1.5. For example, i had a free spitfire model, got it all lovely for the party with some heinkel bombers. then I upgraded to 1.5, and then I separeted teh propellers so i could spin them in element, but when i went to "redecorate" I find I can't use the images, which are tga or something like that. also dds. my old nice spit is still there, but what do I do now? I'm sure I've missed something, eagerly awaiting advice. I have a strafing run planned and my planes are naked!!!

Just curious Andrew, but I think you worked on the Upside down trailer, am I correct? The first official use of Metropolitan in the interstitial cards?
January 29th, 2013 @ 3:29 pm
Quick question. Is it possible to use an .obj sequence as a particle array? (The only reason why I haven't tried it myself is because I just thought of it now, and my machine is currently rendering (in AE)

If so, then I would like ask if there are any side effects that may occur as a result?
    February 6th, 2013 @ 7:15 am
DearOne. You can. But May be it will be heavy scene. That gonna need greater machine to render though. You were doubting with same problem I guess . :) Hehe

Hi Andrew,

Is it possible to create the layout of the city and then select a few buildings to export to 3DS max, create some destruction to those buildings and then import them back into AE with the same position ?

it would be a nice way to do layout for destruction shots.

I have scoured search results but cannot find a solution to the problem we have at our shop. Here's what we keep running into:

Using V1, when we collect AE projects, the link between textures (and I believe OBJ's) is getting lost. Whether the project is collected (using 'AE collect files') or simply moved in the Finder, all the models are untextured when the project is opened after the move.

Again, I can't find a fix, workaround, or even comment about this. If anybody knows how to resolve this, it would help immensely. In our shop, we have to swap projects around a lot. So, unfortunately we cannot change that aspect of our workflow.

Thanks in advance,
Brian

Collect files does not work with Element 3D, you will need to manually copy the files into the Video Copilot Model folder on the destination system.

Greetings! Quick question that's completely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My web site looks weird when browsing from my iphone. I'm trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to fix this issue.
If you have any recommendations, please share. Thank you!
