[UPDATED] Element 3D V1.5 Official Announcement!

UPDATED: Element v1.5 is released

I’m excited to announce that ELEMENT 3D V1.5 will be available next week as a FREE update to customers! This update will include cool new features, enhancements and some bug fixes! One of the new features is our Real-Time Glow engine that allows you to add glow directly to illuminated materials or even image highlights. It’s extremely fast and offers even more realistic results than just using the standard Glow Plug-in.  We have also developed a custom Anchor Point control system and impressive workflow enhancements.

OK, Before I go on… this update will unfortunately not be featuring 3D Shadows but we KNOW this is a top feature and are confident it will be available in V2 later this year (we’ll get to that later).  We are really working hard on it! Creating OpenGL shadows is not a trivial thing but we are experimenting with several innovative & hybrid solutions.

That doesn’t mean we haven’t been killing ourselves to make Element 3D the most powerful plug-in in the world and we know only way to do that is to keep adding features and improving the tool-set.

PLUS, we still have many new features to announce for Version 1.5 along with our massive Skyscraper and Building Pack called METROPOLITAN so stay tuned!

What is the point of mentioning a product that's been in Beta for some time and only available to large studios? Not to mention the massive price it will have.

Most exciting news I've heard all week! WOW! I literally couldn't have made this (http://vimeo.com/53953292) without Element 3D (so V1.5 would have been amazing for the glow effect!) THANKS

The anchor point system will be SICK. Thank you!
January 14th, 2013 @ 1:24 pm
Andrew, will the glow be controlled by an image map, and will the color of the glow be based on that map?

Thanks! Element is amazing!
    January 14th, 2013 @ 12:27 pm
It's based on a few things. It can be based on illumination only, so that includes illuminated materials and maps. Or it can be based on illumination like highlights and reflections.
    January 15th, 2013 @ 1:32 am
Hello, Andrew (and everyone, of course).

I hope you guys can work in the Ambient Occlusion of Element 3D, because it gives a lot of problems in far distances. And the planes for the ground (for the fake AO shadows) make some weird bumps sometimes.

Anyway, in my particular situation, what I've missed is some kind of solution for animating things (well, "groups" in Element). I use to attach position, scale and rotation of each group to a Null for control everything directly in the screen, but it's a lot of expressions work. And the worst of all is this: if you use the "copy and paste settings" option for one group to another, the expressions aren't there! Please, please, please, fix this in future versions... It's a lot of work to repeat all the expressions in every parameter.

The new possibility to customizate the anchor point is huge, congrats.

    Carlos.

CRoblex, To get a null connected you can use the script Elementary on aescripts.com! I use that script all the time and it works well!
January 14th, 2013 @ 1:24 pm
So exciting to hear about this. Element has absolutely reignited my desire to learn AE. I don't think I've had such a thrill learning as with this plug-in. The immediate results just floor me. And now you add glow to the situation!? Diggity!
January 14th, 2013 @ 1:25 pm
Super excited about the anchor point control! If does what I think it will, that will solve one of my biggest issues with Element which made it difficult to animate certain things. VideoCopilot rocks, and listens to their customers!
January 14th, 2013 @ 1:26 pm
Dont sweat the shadows. :D Elementary from AE Scripts will give you the time you need to do it right. Congrats on your continued success. Andrew,

I was about to buy element 3D but now you guys are already planning 2.0 ... How is your upgrade policy and stuff.. I don't wanna invest in a tool that will be obsolete in less than a year.. Should i just wait?
    January 14th, 2013 @ 12:33 pm
Well, we are a ways off from V2 but we offer good discounts to previous customers who are upgrading so it will not be full price. If you can get some good use out a product now, it should be worth it.

Wow Great news
I have a question about the 3d world in element 3d and combining with the other 3d layers
if i rotate 180 degree the 3d object will remain on the top the other layers or remain behind (this appear according the layer arrangement in the timeline) Like particular
my Ques. is there something like particular that can use layers a matte or so?
    January 14th, 2013 @ 12:35 pm
Well... check out the depth compositing tutorial to see a way to use a Z-pass to composite. But also check out the 3D Truck tutorial because it shows you how to use a layer as a "matte Shadow" that can obscure other layers or intersect them. There are various ways to accomplish this depending on your situation.

Thanks Andrew! This is by far, the plug in that I would give 10 out of 10. And you guys keep making it better? This one will have to go up to 11.
January 14th, 2013 @ 1:40 pm
So excited for this. Working on a project right now that needs glows and it becomes a pain in the arse with larger AE projects.

What about more groups, array replicators working for text and masks too (as opposed to .361), a way to turn off random seed, solo switch in scene setup, custom paths for materials and objects, light blocking (not shadows) from one object to another, etc... Please add some more details for we waited quite a while for only two features to be anounced.
    January 14th, 2013 @ 1:03 pm
A full list will be available soon. I'm sorry for the wait, we've been busy making the new features :)

January 14th, 2013 @ 2:03 pm
Hmmm... I don't suppose V2 of E3D has anything to do with the rumoured support for an integrated 3D workspace for plugins in AE CS7?
January 14th, 2013 @ 2:10 pm
Great news as always. Will the graphics glitch currently present in the Mac version be fixed though?
    January 14th, 2013 @ 2:12 pm

Sounds awesome! and V2 and metropolitan pack will surely be interesting. But what I want to know is when the vehicles pack will be out?

January 14th, 2013 @ 2:30 pm
WOW! I'm really excited to see this. Does the render in the announcement here suggest there may be a "Vehicles" pack coming as well ...?
January 14th, 2013 @ 2:30 pm
I believe those features will be very useful like element3D.. may be increasing number of groups would be better.. Also, importing an animated scene from 3D software.. I mean using e3d to render in ae in the future.. because it's really really fast and fair enough for visualition with ae features.. you may check this out: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151203212403822&set=a.10150974857343822.424503.638483821&type=1&theater it'a frame for now but will be a video scene..

Andrew, I'm not a rich man, and at the rate I'm gaining in wealth, I doubt I'll ever be considered such.
But when somebody is putting in the R&D and sweat-equity to produce great tools like Element 3D (among others), it really would not have occurred to me that I or others may want the product(s) "free".
I'm perfectly willing to pay the modest prices you charge for the quality and subsequent support I've always gotten from VC.
No judgement on anybody, but I'm wondering where that quality "free" place is .... because I can't find it.

I just want to say that I probably check VCP daily to see if there are any exciting News or updates or tutorials. Having my web browser open to your home page and up on my editing suite dual monitors in the corner is just part of my daily workflow. I am an indie filmmaker who also creates graphic design and motion graphics for the local entertainment industry in Vancouver. I discovered VCP back in 2008 when I was left with 375 shots to composite on my very first feature film. I needed to learn AE and I needed to learn it right. A friend put forward VCP URL and my life changed that day with my first tutorial. I was able to finish my film after spending almost 2.5 years in my basement learning from your tutorials and applying them to my own shots. My film found major distribution in 2011 and even won an award for best visual effects in a feature film at the California Scream Festival all because of your tutorials. I knew then that Andrew Kramer and VCP had something special to offer us. Im so happy to see the insane innovation and growth of your company Andrew and team. You guys have revolutionized AE for ALL of us across the globe. I see Optical Flares and action essentials virtually in every film or commercial I see now. Its amazing what you guys have done for the visual FX community. I was so excited when you invented Elements and am now forever even more in love with AE because of your genius. I cant wait for the new update and for the new building pack! Please keep up the great work and in making my life easier as an independent filmmaker.

Cheers

Boys,

What wonderful announcements. Not only the updated E3D, but the AE plug-in requests too. I’ll save a bit of time and clump it all together if that’s ok. Firstly for this update to be available is pretty damn awesome, and especially it being a free one. I really haven’t had many issues at all with the year-one version although I’ll be more than happy to purchase the updated version 2, as one I think it will be worth it and 2, you guys damn well deserve it!

I do have an inquiry though regarding the updates. Will there be more groups available to create more complex custom models (which I have been doing for some time) and will it be possible to “edit” a shape in Element? For example take a cube and slice it to be the shape of a pyramid? Or is that moving into 3D modeling territory? Also would it be possible for E3D to obscure light? (like in the wall of lights tutorial for optical flares) That would be truly phenomenal and well worth paying an upgrade fee in itself.

Regarding AE plug ins. To be honest I struggle with the strangest thing and that’s understanding the lights in AE. I can never seem to get them placed where I want, the brightness I want and the distance I want from the subject. It really is my achilles heel in AE and its always a compromise. A plug in to help with that would be awesome.

Ok I’m done, keep up the good work guys and I wish you all the success you deserve for 2013
Robert Walker
January 14th, 2013 @ 5:14 pm
This might be very late for Feature Request, but still...
1. We need an extruded text Element to retain its size after its source text has been edited.
2. Can the link between source layers and Element layers be retained when copied and pasted from one comp to another, please?
    January 14th, 2013 @ 5:31 pm
The only way that this is possible is if we created a text input system inside of Element 3D. Where you type it in, choose a font etc. When loading text layers, we don't really know if you have created one line of text or 2 lines of text, so there is really no way to know what the font size is and thus our system is designed to extrude shapes no matter what size. The only downside to this, is one, having to make the entire text input system, and 2 the user will lose a lot of the nice editing features and dynamic editing of a text layer from the AE side.

The second item should be fixed in 1.5

    January 15th, 2013 @ 3:30 am
Completely agree with Robert Walker. When working on multiple titles eg PAGE1,PAGE2,PAGE3 etc it's quite a pain to have to rescale because a 1 is narrower than a 2. What a bout a checkbox that links to the font size and locks the vertical scaling of the text object.
    January 15th, 2013 @ 6:53 am
is this not fixed by disabling "Auto preset scale" and "normalize size"?
    Jimmy
    January 15th, 2013 @ 12:20 pm
This is fixed by @klor's suggestion. I do this daily at work. Just uncheck those two boxes and the size won't change. Only bug I've noticed @Andrew Kramer is when you turn those two options off and then change the text, it will occasionally shift, especially if the text is much longer or shorter than whatever it first was.
    Mark Pavy
    January 15th, 2013 @ 1:43 pm
Andrew, klor, Jimmy...my apologies...just tried that suggestion and it works. I'm sure I'd messed around with that and couldn't get it to work, Jimmy, you say it shifts occasionally, maybe I had that experience in my tests. This will save me hours considering I have over 1000 titles to output of the same project template. Thanks again guys.

I think the shadow can be help this plugin for realistic results. but one of importants things is limitation in materals and texturing . I think normal bump and specular map is'nt enough for realistic results. work in rendering engine can be help this.

Dont forget this plug in allows you to import your own textures and bump maps making it almost limitless at the price.

What is the approximate price of METROPOLITAN?
January 14th, 2013 @ 10:07 pm
So when are you going to make a business and wedding/party pack as said when element came out ;-)
Version 2 will not be free for the current customers? Those software updates are way to expensive! Adobe CS5 > CS6 cost me a lot of money to update. Sooooo, will there be a yearly update for element? I'd better start saving update money ;-)
    January 14th, 2013 @ 9:10 pm
P.S. I do understand why the software is expensive! The time, the workflow, technics etc. but my wallet hates the updates.
    Terry

Then don't update, asking if a mayor update it's going to be free is like asking for Nintendo to give you the Wii U for free.

Don't stress Andrew about shadows. There's always around that. As long as element doesn't become like adobe and be memory hungry. Speed is the key to this successful plug in. Looking forward to new model pack

Hey Andrew,
I just would like to say that it would be awesome if there were some kind of rigging possibilities in E3D.Ofcourse not like the 3d softwares which are meant for it,but maybe with parenting groups to 3d nulls or i dunno.Tho for that to come true the UI would need more than 5 groups.I tried to animate a fly 3d model using all 5 groups (1 for the head,1 for right legs,1 for left legs,1 for right wing,1 for left wing) and it seemed like it pretty much worked and it would be even more exciting to achieve that with an easier solution and more object groups.Just a little tip for the future updates...
Best wsihes,
Nazmi

@nazmi, have you tried the script Elementary on AEscript ?
    http://aescripts.com/elementary/
It's a good solution for the moment to parent quickly groups to null

@AndrewKramer Great job guys ! It's a revolution for ae users. It is so fast to create 3D scenes ! My clients are also super happy ! ;)

Will Element 3D 1.5 be also for Windows 8?
January 15th, 2013 @ 4:24 am
very excited for this. What I really hope for is more tutorials though, being from NH you have to be able to do all things, so I'm not a 3d guru like most people here, and your tutorials help me produce projects for clients normally only available from the big Boston firms. So please please more tuts, and I'm not looking for freebies either. The success I've enjoyed thanks to your projects and tutorials enables me now to pay for things :-)

Andrew I really love your plugins and your great tutorials but i was shocked when I read that i have to pay again for V2 to get shadows. I know that you all spend a lot of time in developing and for sure youre working hard but I´m student and dont have the money for an update to get a "complete plug-in". I know you said the upgrade price is not as big as the normal but I just bought Elements and gave all my money away.

Anyway...keep up the good work.

I really look forward to E3D 1.5!! Amazing features!! Built-in Glow, I like it!
V2 sounds exiting too!

Will future E3D updates/releases be heavier for GPU or CPU?

I have i7 920 with 12GB ram and a old GTX 285 graphics card and it works really fine with 3DE today!
(until I add Depth of Field in Camera options, that seems to be a little heavy effect for my machine)

Do I need to upgrade my machine with E3D 1.5 or V2.0?

Thank you for all the work with tutorials, creating AE2 Optical Flares and E3D!

Wish list: to buy Pro Scores II and a Ambient/Background pack for E3D objects.
(BG like these 3 turning soda cans in E3D demo video at 01:05,

I admit,
I can´t make one like that, but I can buy)

I am a happy customer :)

Andrew,

An awesome feature you guys could do is like Adobe's 'Creative Cloud'.. A way where you pay monthly to use your tools. It's the only i had to enjoy After Effects officially and that service is really awesome. I would pay 10 bugs or even more per month for your tools!

Well, for shadows we already got elementary,
http://aescripts.com/elementary/
My top request would be applying obj sequences, which would be a total game changer! As far as I know, though, this feature is not your top priority.
Heeeehhhhhh...

    January 18th, 2013 @ 8:13 am
wow,i just learned that such a script exists! thank you very much dude.i installed it and it is really amazing! but the only negative comment i cans ay about it is script panels and the precomps coming with them just makes the comp even more crowded, that would be awesome if we see all those pros in the upcoming updates of the plug in itself, but till then it is a perfect solution! thank you so much again for mentioning ;)

elementary crashes ae on Mac though cause of Open GL and creating Nulls with expressions so not sure if it will work better with Element 3d 1.5 but Im glad element will have It's own anchor system

January 15th, 2013 @ 1:40 pm
Very Excited for 1.5. Sounds like it fixes a lot of issues so awesome work Team VC!

One thing that would be great to include in v2 - is for the render engine to work properly with BG renderer. Every time I try to use BG renderer with Element 3d it crashes the system and I have to hard reboot, I'm sure it's a memory /leaking issue, but it'd be amazing if you could get those working together because BG renderer is a must in production! Keep up the awesome work!
    October 23rd, 2013 @ 3:58 pm
Since the BG Renderer just launches AE's command line renderer (AErender.exe), the problem lies there. AErender.exe only uses the CPU To render. And Element uses the GPU. So until Adobe fixes this, it'll never work. But it's an Adobe error, not Element 3D.

Hi Andrew,

Can you explain to me how can I do to when I open Element3D, all the models already have their maps on them?
For example, the "Halloween" pack, when I open it with Element3D all the models have their maps on it.

I want to do that with all the model packs.

Hope you help me.
I've not to say "You rock!" and all that stuff 'cause you know it and all the world knows it too.

Thanks.

Hey Andrew, can you please teach how did you deconstruct the watch in the promotional video of Element 3D and how you made that gun's upper part go back while the bullet is released ( also shown in the promotional video ).
If there already is a video then please give the link. And I LOVE ALL YOUR PRODUCTS!! Specially Element 3D cause it's a perfect plug-in for the kind of movies i like making, i can't wait for the Metropolitan pack, also please add a Vehicles pack cause it will be AWESOME.

Hi,

This kind of goes along with the last blog post and this one. I was really hoping you could add some way of animating individual items in Element and changing the anchor point of those. For example I'm having trouble figuring out a way of animating tires on a car, other than bringing in an entirely new model for the tires. I know it's not what Element was built for, but it would help a lot...

Would you be able to include search boxes so that you can search for models in Element and in Opitcal Flares? it would make life so much easier. Thanks

I'd really like you to increase the amount of groups in element to 10 PLEASE!!! I recently recreated a 2D logo in Element and had to split it in to 8 seperate layers. So i did 5 in one and 3 on another layer of Element but then rotating the logo a full 360 showed layer overlap issues plus the ambient occlusion shadows didnt show across layers.
The other thing id love to see in v2 of Element would be a more usuable aproach to beveling masks. I usually copy and paste vector masks from photoshop in to AE then when in Element i have to expand the path edge to ad a bevel that leaves the original thickness of shape or text, only thing is that expanding paths can cause path crossovers and abnormalities and therefore holes and spikes. It would really help if there was a check box to prevent paths from crossing each other or spiking.

Cheers

Hey! I have a query.
Does element support Shape layers as custom layers or not? I tried and it failed to read the path. Why I'm asking is because sometimes I import an AI file, and then convert to shape layer for scalability but then again for some vectors Auto trace function isn't quite accurate. Plz hlp!

Can u have animated textures in Element 3D ??? and is it possible? Thanks
    January 20th, 2013 @ 6:15 pm
There's a few tutorial notes about implementing animated textures on the VC tutorials (the one with the iPhone, specifically)you can pretty much replace any of the texture maps with custom layers- but be careful you can bog down things a lot with a lot of animation on things, and it gets kind of weird depending on what you're trying to do- here's a little test I worked on that shows an animated bump map as slimy skin on a creature:

Hi there VC team!! I have a problem with the glow. When I animate an object that has a glow active in it and its animating into the scene, at the edges of the scene frame when the object comes in, the glow is bright then it dims to the settings I have set.

The other is, if a 3d object I have in the scene is going away from the camera the glow starts to flicker when it gets smaller.

Is there something I'm missing in the settings or is this a graphics card thing?

Many Thanks
Will Jane
