Pauze!!! I can really use animated cinema 4d obj? Andrew sir you rock!!! That is just what I need for my new project!!! Thumbs up!!! ;-)
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 3:40 am
Yep! They just have to be exported into a OBJ Sequence in order to use with Element 3D but it is quite handy.
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 4:41 am
quite handy? It's amazing! You are a timesaver!

    January 22nd, 2013 @ 7:08 am
Cinema 4D does not export animation to OBJ, so could you also add the functionality to import C4D animations as well?

That would be really great, thanks!

Argh! you're right LP no OBJ Sequence for cinema 4d :-(
    David S.
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 8:27 am
Check this site for an obj sequence exported:

    http://aescripts.com/plexus-obj-sequence-exporter-for-c4d/

It was originally made for Plexus but you can use it for other plugins. haven't tested it for Element, but it works for Trapcode stuff.
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 8:33 am
He thnx, I also found that one, haha. But I'm a little afraid that when I buy this plugin......Andrew makes it possible for element in a other way? Are you Andrew going to fix this? Or should I buy the plugin?
    Louie
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 10:29 am
In Cinema 4D R14 maybe u can use the Alembic-Export Feature. Get the abc File in youre favorite 3D programm and export this for OBJ...
    alaindeloc
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 11:01 am
I used the OBJ sequence plugin made for Plexus in Cinema 4D and it works just fine.

Anyway, it's 10 bucks. Less than that it's a sandwich.
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 11:10 am
What? it's 10 bucks? Where did you look??? link please

In the future, are there any plans to incorporate animatable models (like a robot, or even soft-body elements, like a dinosaur) into Element 3D? It'll make the integration between the digital elements that much more amazing... Just saying. Keep up the awesome work guys.
    Jack Ebensteiner
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 3:58 am
As amazing as that would be, you open a whole new (massive) can of worms with that one. Element would then have to essentially convert AE to a fully fledged 3D program - given it would need to calculate actual joint animation, geo weighting and deformation. If the incorporated hard surface, rigid bound rigs, that alone would be a phenomenal start though! And hey, they've impressed thus far, so here's hoping!
    Maxweel
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 4:19 am
You can already do this using the different groups in Element. See the robot animation example here:

Holy Smokes! Thank you SO much for animated 3D objects Andrew!
That was my #1 item on my wish list as I can now do many, many VFX I love doing without going through 3dsMax!
Btw, I basically learnt After Effects from your website - it was confusing at first, but so much fun that I just had to keep watching and eventually picked it all up :D

Just watched the presentation and I'm impressed. Obj sequences are awesome, glow is a nice addition and you really listened to the community with a lot of the smaller changes and fixes. The only thing I find subpar is the custom anchor feature. Matching this with a free camera is quite sketchy and you really should consider moving this feature in the group settings of the plugin since here we have multiview and see all the other objects. I guess that's for Element 2.0 thought. Anyway, awesome update and I'm looking forward downloading it asap :)
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 4:21 am
Thanks Klaus. Here is the issue with putting the anchor point at the group level. The anchor point will affect ALL of the objects on the group, which can be infinite. So if I have a hockey-stick and a baseball, the anchor point may work for one but not the other. Sure it works well if you only use a single particle but we have to keep all use cases in mind. We agree about the view issue, it is limited but our hope is Orthographic Presets in the future.
    Klaus Brandenburg
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 5:21 am
Thanks for the feedback Andrew. Since I rarely use more than 1 particle per group, I haven't thought of this so you are right. Orthographic view or a toggle views would be fine by me too. Maybe in 2.0? Anyway, now let's celebrate 1.5!!!
    Kevin Schires
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 5:47 am
Good point for not showing the anchor point in the group settings.
However placing the anchor point only by the eye is not always easy, even with orthographic views.
Would it be possible to have at some point the possibility to display both the model and a transparent version rotated by 180 in order to see accurately the effect of the anchor point? Like this (in the video thumbnail and around 4:30): https://vimeo.com/51353002 but inside the scene setup?

Anyway, great job on the animation feature. Too bad we've been left without news for so long since dealing with all the little bugs made me forget how easy (and enjoyable) using Element is.

One more thing though.... Is it possible to assign the "AE Shape Layer" as custom paths?

Not possible, this is a limitation of the AE API.

There is a free script called "Shapes to Masks" which creates masks from any shape-layer...It takes a second and works perfectly with any object.

Andrew, as a school we have an Adobe site license, would you consider offering an educational site-license for Element 3D? It breaks my heart seeing the kids create in AE knowing element would take their work to a whole new level, it's just as a school we couldn't afford individual licenses.

Thank you for your continued commitment to educating others.

Can't wait to see this update. however i am Concerned that the release of Metropolitan may cause a ripple in the time space continuum, since its listing will unbalance the available model packs to to an odd number, which could EASILY be mistaken for an intergalatic warning to some beings. Animated objects in element!? Andrew, please can you kiss your programers for me?
January 22nd, 2013 @ 6:11 am
I'm thanking you Andrew (and your team) for taking so huge steps in this update.
So many useful features in a single version. I wish all softwares could evolve the way Element 3D does.

Yet I have question : what about motion blur on animated OBJ Sequences?
As Motion blur is generated on moving objets, I guess Animated OBJ are not actually "moving" but switching from one step to the next one. Motion blur is crucial to achieve realistic VFX. (on the flock of birds for example) I guess we can simulate Motion Blur using Reel Smart Motion blur. Will you consider to add kind of "forced 3D motion blur" feature in the futur ? Tell me if I'm wrong.

A few suggestions/questions:
1. Do "Subtract" masks work? In the current public version they don't, and that's been a big bummer for me.
2. If you can release the Glow filter as an individual effect, meaning as a plug-in, I'd use it a lot. I'm a stock Glow user that is not happy with it.
3. How about Particle Simulations? Do they work?
4. I'd really like .3ds and .max support.
5. Something I REALLY need - transcluency! To have light pass through objects is great for plants, liquid, cloth, paper, skin, and more, and I actually have a few projects in which I'm sorry I didn't have it.
6. Last but not least: The AO is quite grainy. Not sure if this has been fixed?

Final, Preview and Draft Function! Awesome! This will help me next time I am working with 1-5 3D Element Layers :D Thank you, Andrew!

As a sidenote I know that the VC Team cannot stand this comment anymore but for me 3D Shadows and real reflections (world, objects) would have topped it up!

But i guess you cheeky developers save that for 3D Element 2.0 right?
Haha!
If you do please give us 1.0 Users at least a discount like you will do with Optical Flares 2.0 okay ;)?

January 22nd, 2013 @ 6:18 am
Awesome! Andrew, you helped save us time again. But I hope ,maybe in Element v2.0,I can move the 3d objects using my arrow, not the parameter, which can help me locate the objects more accurately. Thanks!
January 22nd, 2013 @ 6:19 am
This looks amazing, that powerful glow effect is quite unexpected, and it nicely shows off the unique selling point of all Video Copilot effects - everything is there because a motion graphics expert decided it would be useful, not put in because a programmer knew it would be easy or left out because a programmer knew it would be hard.

I think there may be a lot of demand for this glow as a stand-alone effect that we can use outside Element, have you thought about offering that someday?

Hi, Andrew how about creating a zlayer script that you can drop on a solid that will reference your element layer but access different render outputs. Then you wouldnt have to make a full copy of element for depth masks, and it would update without having to change settings on multiple element copies. Food for thought. Love your vids and products.
Thanks for all the edutainment.

Andrew I have a BIG Question. I am an AE VFX editor and I use #d Elements a lot! but I don't know nothing about 3D Software. I love though the MENTAL RAY and VRAY Looks. So now that I can do so much in AE with 3D Elements, is there gonna be a future way to export final composite of 3d Elements done in AE back into a 3D software for FULL Realistic Rendering like V RAY or MENTAL RAY after I am done with my camera and composite in AE?
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 6:33 am
Alain, I don't think ELEMENT will actually compete with hyper realistic renders such as VRAY. ELEMENT is based on Open GL Engine whereas VRAY is using Raytracing. ELEMENT is really is good a "faking" it. Having real raytracing in Element would mean to lose what is great about it : it's fast, snappy. Did you tried AE raytraced extrusion? It renders awfully slow !

Hi Andrew,
i was wondering..

1. How does Element react with mutli obj-sequence particule system ? (As a crowd with several animated character models)
2. Is there a way to give several object the same anchor point within Element ?

I can't wait to get my hands on this. Thank you
January 22nd, 2013 @ 7:16 am
OMG!
Incredible features VideoCopilot Team... Just so awesome like every news you put on this.
May be puting a control to use the new glow feature like an add or overlay layer or something like that could be usefull...
I miss a more complete viewport where you can see all the whole composition both "2,5Dlayers" and "3dlayers" in a real 3D space ... I know that this is directly a 3D program but a helper or master camera would be very very good...

Anyway all the new things are just awesome. Congratulations.

Anyway Element 3D is the best plugin and IT WILL ALWAYS BE!!!

All of these improvements are amazing.

Import obj sequence - unbelievable - my idea for your update was to better integrate the use of animated masks, guess I need to think bigger in future.

Control the repeat order - excellent - I was working around this by using the 3d grid option, and then tweaking the numbers (einstein style) so that things replicated in the order I wanted. I was thinking that the only way to solve this was to add more groups - no longer necessary. This makes it easier to make buildings, vehicles, weapons etc in AE and ELEMENT using masks alone.

Glow - fantastic - obviously.

Ambient occlusion enhanced options - fantastic. Control the extent to which each group will be affected.

Spike fix - great solve for the expand extrusion problem.

Fog taper - this is incredible also - been dying to do the wire-frame scanning effect then have the objects solidify and appear in a scene. I am gonna do that particular effect to death, and then bring it back to life, and then do it to the death again.

Thanks.

Thanks ghostlayer....I understand and agree with you... but who knows...maybe there will be a way around in the near future...I hope so....at least until I can handle 3d software, cuz it's so expensive to deal with cgi artists that it's not possible on low budget projects...I have to try to keep it one man show on this department, at least for now!!! like the same way you can export camera and lights and clips from AE to cinema 4d with a script, it would be great to be able to export ELEMENT 3D animated in AE, back to cinema 4d or 3dmax or maya to do final render in VRAY or MENTAL RAY after done with the scene.

    January 22nd, 2013 @ 7:35 am
My question is how do you render an OBJ sequence? I use Lightwave 3D and I've rendered an OBJ but never saw any option for an OBJ sequence to get that animation.
    Roy
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 2:06 pm
Why would you want to create something in Element 3D and then export it to a 3D package for rendering? Why go through that hassle when it would be easier to create it in the 3D package to begin with. I think you're missing the point of Element 3D.

Hey Andrew,

Since Cinema 4D can't export animated OBJ sequences, is there a workaround (using 3rd party plugins)? I read somewhere that riptide pro can do it. Since I already bought Cinema 4D especially to use with Elements 3D, I can't afford a second 3D application only to have access to this groundbreaking new feature. Thanks :)
    Osteed Grenn
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 8:15 am
I downloaded the Riptide Pro demo and exported an obj sequence rather easily. Now, I can't be sure it was properly exported and will be compatible with the 1.5 update, but it's looking good for now

Thanks Andrew!

@Eric, I have asked at the Newtek forum about the LW3D options for object sequence exports as well as at the Luxology forum. No answer...yet.
    January 22nd, 2013 @ 8:20 am
I have no clue how to export OBJ Sequences in LW3D. Yet I remember that in 3DS Max (years ago) you had an option menu called "Snapshot" that give us the ability to collapse your 3D mesh at the very current frame whether it has physic simulation or animation. I guess there's now an easier process to export the timeline into OBJ per frame/step. I'm pretty sure Andrew will provide us with some nice export tutorials at least using C4D and Max.
January 22nd, 2013 @ 8:55 am
This is pretty awesome Andrew! You're very good at making something seem like it has a really cool new feature in the previews such as the glow, but then you throw in an even better, cooler new feature like animated obj sequences!

Question: Do you anticipate supporting bone structures in some way in the future?

Thanks!

Andrew, I love Element, it has opened up a whole new world for me in my offerings to clients and has actually gotten me a ton of work, but there is one more thing that would take it to a new level for me, you have made reference to a vehicle model pack, is that still in the works? If not is there a way we could get some of the vehicle models you have used (cop car, jet etc)?

New features look good :)

How about the number of usable groups though - something I found very limiting with only 5 and I know others felt that limitation too.

So was there a decision not to increase the number of groups or was it too difficult etc? Or something coming in v2?

Such a shame there aren't more :(

Really looking forward to the update, too bad it didn't happen during EU work hours.

But rather than explaining new features in even more detail I'm wondering if there could be a condensed "trailer" as well (for future releases)? Maybe 3 minutes instead of 30? I just don't have the time to watch it at work and don't need it tutorial-style, when only trying to see what's to come.
Just a thought...

Thank you so much for all the work you and your team put into making a great plugin even greater!

I was not yet able to download V1.5 yet but from the video it seems two very important and I from my point of view basic functions still seem to be missing:

- Is there a chance that one day element 3D will be able to read .mtl files so all material maps are set up automatically?

The one thing I currently dislike very much is manually adding all the texture, spec, normal, bump, reflectivity etc. maps again. I can understand for a model with only 1-3 material zones it does not take much time. But as soon as you have 10+ material zones it becomes more time consuming.
There will still be some work left to adjust the values but at least one does not have to drag over 30+ maps manually for just one model.

- - -

- Is there any chance that an option to load opacity / Transparency maps can be added?

Many 3D models use transparency maps. For example clothing, eyelashes etc are often relying on transparency.

- - -

In any way thanks for all the great work you allready did!

hi Andrew sir my name is rohullah kabir iam living in Afghanistan element 3d is very useful thanks for updating those bugs and i have a request if you can ad a new option on element 3d when tow object would be in same project inside element we need to cast their reflection into one another
if we on ambient Occlusion on element 3d it well cast shadows there must be an option to cast reflection and retractions to one another because when we use an object and put a plane under it to cast ambient Occlusion we also might want them to cast reflection as well....thanks sir hope you get my question and solve it

Hello Andraw,

I use Riptide pro to export .obj sequences files from c4d R14 and import them in to Element.
It loads very quickly in to Element but nothing appears on the screen unless I make the environment visible. Then I can visualize the whole sequence of an animated....black object, remaining black whatever is the material applied to it.
Working with AE cs6, mac pro early 2008, nividia gtx 285, osx 10.6.8,ram 32 go.
Is there something wrong using Riptide or with the configuration ?
Thanks a lot.

Andrew, please take a look at Alembic: http://code.google.com/p/alembic/
It's open source, very compact and portable, random-access ready format. The perfect choice for any animation.
Please see http://code.google.com/p/alembic/ for an impressive demonstration.
All major 3D packages import and export it.
January 24th, 2013 @ 12:53 am
+1 for Alembic support. OBJ Sequence is not available on every 3D package (C4D for exemple) and 3rd party plugins are not always efficient.
It would be nice to implement it in Element3D 1.7 or 2.0 ;-)

This is awesome! Element just gets more and more impressing!

Just one question, when I'm loading a .obj sequence in Element, i only get one shader, even though my animated objects in maya consists of 5 shaders. Is there a way to get all the shaders to show up inside element (like with loaded static obj files), or is a .obj sequence limited to only one shader/material?

Thank you for the animated OBJ feature. I first purchased Element 3D when it first came out, and groaned when I couldn't import animated meshes. Hadn't touched it since. One question, though - I did the v1.5 install, opened AE, and both of the collections I purchased, Motion Design, and Pro Shaders, are gone! Do I have to reinstall these every time there's an update, or am I missing something painfully obvious. Thanks.
    January 24th, 2013 @ 11:19 am
By the way...I looked in the folder where the shaders and motion graphics packs were installed, and they are where they were originally installed. They're just not showing up in Element 3D. Thanks.

OK - much bigger problem here! I just tried to re-install my Motion Graphic Pack and my Pro Shaders, and nothing at all shows up in Element! Any suggestions? Thanks.

This render would not have been possible without the new Element 3d.

The half life model is thanks to “thefree3d”, animated using 3dsmax and OBJ sequence exporter.

Quick shout out to Matt - great tech support on my problem a few posts up. Ended up figuring out the issue. I had installed AE on my D: drive - I have a C: drive for OS, and D: is for apps. So I installed with the "custom" setting pointing to the AE install on the D: drive. Of course the files were in the "documents" folder. I had to move the Element 3D content files to Support Files/VideoCopilot, and everything showed up - Pro Shaders, Motion Graphics pack, and custom stuff I had exported from 3DS Max as .obj files. Just in case anyone has the same problem...thanks again Matt!

hi,
is there anyway to separate/randomize XYZ scale for particles? possible for animate text extrusion. will this break the 3D object?

i'm pretty sure that the Element3D team has taken this into consideration.

thanks

Does this mean if you have a physics shatter you can bring the animation to element 3d?
January 27th, 2013 @ 5:52 am
I have the plugin(Plexus OBJ Exporter) for Cinema 4D, but the generated OBJ have no information. There is no animation and the OBJ looks very simpel. Which settings are required? I would be very happy if someone could help!!! Thank you!
    February 1st, 2013 @ 2:28 am
    Hey Ralf.
That happens when you import the obj seq as an object and not as a sequence.
When in the element scene interface, go to:

    FILE
    IMPORT 3D SEQUENCE.

I have a bird in Cinema 4D animated. The animation consists of 50 frames. If these export now with PLEXUS OBJ EXPORTER 50 obj files are created. But these are all the same and have no animation. The files are also a lot less than if I export file via the standard alden create an OBJ! When imported into ELEMENT while a scene is recognized, but without animation. The problem is that generated by Plexus OBJ EXPORTER no usable OBJ! Sorry i'am german!

1.5 is great !
I have noticed a Fantastic Change on 1.5 update on Mac OS version : objects 3D manipulations now have 100% realtime response in AE ! All positon, orbit changes used to be seen "on mouse release" so far. (due to Open GL I think) It changes everything in my opinion. Does anyone made the same observations ? (Among Mac Users)
Thanks again to your awesome team and keep up the good work.

Hello Andrew's community !

I've made my first use of element 3d and my first afterist motion design, using Only element 3d
Can you give me some opinion ?

i'm not so proud of it but i think it could uphold that E3D is a huge monster which give you the right to create anything you imagine!
Thank you Andrew
Thank you all ;)

Element 3D helped me to make an exaggerated Michael Jackson glove parodying a Black Ops Zombies powerup. I imported a glove obj from Carrara and then added multiple "studs" to the glove in Element 3D using 3D replicator and choosing the glove as the replicator shape (quick and easy!). I used Optical Flares to make the glove glow. I also used Andrew's tips on creating an exploding body also (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4JuX-ITB0Y). Your products and tutorials have been highly valuable in my workflow! Many many thanks!

PLEXUS OBJ EXPORTER DOES NOT EXPORT NORMALS.

Hey guys.
Heads up - bought PLEXUS OBJ EXPORTER plugin to export obj sequences. It doesn't export normals.
If you want to texture your stuffs(which I'm assuming you do), then it's not really of any use to you.

Andrew, many thanks for this plugin and the update 1.5.

I finally got it to animated a flock of birds!

In Element: is there a simple way to copy all the changes and settings of one Group and apply to another one? (Just how I would do with animators). As of now I can't click on group and Copy or Paste. That would make my life so much easier.

I got it. It's right there - 3rd option in the group setting!

For C4D R13 and later with AE CS6 / Element 3D V1.6 Riptide Pro Plugin (http://skinprops.com/riptidepro.php) is working well. Even if you bake down your animation in C4D, Riptide Pro can handle this. The import over the import 3D sequenz works well. just tested it ( http://skinprops.com/riptidepro.php) ). Plexus Plugin by the way is not working together with element 3D, cause it is produced to export obj without texture coordinates and normals. Plexus only exports vertices and triangles / Faces.

I keep getting a crash error when importing obj sequence!

Hey guys, my obj sequence is very slow when scrubbing the timeline (3sec load per frame) any tips for optimising playback (in E3D viewer or draft mode in comp the results is the same)

I have 153 meshes with 267762 vertices and 89254 faces (size 0.9,2.0,0.9) its a game ready model with texture sizes from 500 to 1000 pixels square png's.

Im on an Imac with :

Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB
Software OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)

Cheers!
