Planet Matte Paintings

The matte painting challenge is going well. Today I’m going to start looking through all of the matte paintings and find a few to use for the different shots in the sequence. Once we have a few that work, I’ll start comping in the background and finishing the rest of the shots. Keep up the great work, I think we’ll definitely do more of these in the future! Maybe the next one will be a matte painting in the future… Yes!!

Keep going, the challenge ends June 15th!

I dont Have a clue how to use photoshop soooo, I use after effects for the DMP instead. Is that a wise choice? OR is it better on photoshop
June 5th, 2012 @ 10:44 am
did you rotoscoped manually or did you used the auto-rotobrush?

because we don't see any greenscreen :)
June 5th, 2012 @ 10:08 am
^ What Edy says . I like this idea and it would be with fun to take this to the forum also . I suggest that you make a new board on the forum, where we can make challenges for eachother , share project files and ideas , or something clever like that :) I just think it could be fun and give another aspect to the forum .
Anyways , will post my version of the challenge soon . Don't know if it have anything to do with matte paintings at all , kinda just got taken by the inspiration :)
Nice day to ya all

Even though mine may have not been the best, it was fun competing with the others. Having competition made me a bit better. Thanks Andrew!
June 5th, 2012 @ 12:25 pm
I figured you were going for desolate, so I decided to keep it simple and resist the urge to cram a bunch of stuff in there that might not work with your other shots.
    June 5th, 2012 @ 7:47 pm
Nice work. Simple is best, yes indeed.
    June 8th, 2012 @ 5:59 pm

here is my entry AK!!

Just want to say thank you for all your hard work and dedication. I remember two years ago I couldn't even spell "compositing", but your enthusiasm and your love for your work had changed my life! Thanks again!
    June 13th, 2012 @ 10:18 am
Hey man, awesome work!! If you don´t mind me asking, how did you manage to make that light on the mountain ? How did you increase the exposure of only 1 side of it ? Thanks already in advance man!
June 5th, 2012 @ 11:14 pm
First Matte Painting...Fun...But I'll stick to animation
June 5th, 2012 @ 11:18 pm
this was ...great Idea
June 5th, 2012 @ 11:56 pm
That's amazing you totally changed the angle of the land very good!!
June 6th, 2012 @ 4:23 am
not bad, you know! it is somehow Sam replacement, not bg matte painting!
    June 7th, 2012 @ 12:01 am
with all respect but that's just sky replacement...
    June 7th, 2012 @ 3:19 pm
that looks nice, great camera tracking too,
but the biggest thing I can point out is that the lighting for the set extension is different than your subject/original plate.

The lighting of your original plate is from right to left, and your set extension is from left to right (the sun is on the left..) hope that helps!
June 6th, 2012 @ 1:38 pm
Here 's an idea. Matte painting + make own prop & design the effect for what its function is. The setting? 25 Years from now.

June 6th, 2012 @ 2:50 pm
i wonder if Sam has to walk some steps towards the cam, how would the flat ground in the original shot match the inclined ground in matte painted one?! i mean, does Sam have to pretend walking up or down a ramp or what?!
thank Mr.Kramer.

This is the project I wish I was a part of!
    June 7th, 2012 @ 3:36 pm
Killer video it looks like a nerds fantasy. I saw a ton of video Copilot stuff in it!.
    June 11th, 2012 @ 4:06 pm
I heard that this project was a bit of a legal battle between the producer and the band. But the producer won the right to complete due to his contracts he had in place. Always get your contracts signed. Still it's a killer video!
    June 14th, 2012 @ 1:00 am
Great post, killer video! I dig it! Love the asari, but aren't they blue?
    June 15th, 2012 @ 7:52 am
Love the moon shot at the beginning also the spaceships in the background look familiar.

June 8th, 2012 @ 5:24 am
Hummm... Isn't there a little problem with the wheel trace on the ground...?
They seem to come out from the laying stones.
And Sam's helmett is funny, yes;-)
June 8th, 2012 @ 9:22 am

Thanks to Andrew, for all his work, and all tutorials, and time that he has spent on us))
Greetings from Ukraine)
June 8th, 2012 @ 7:04 pm
Here's my entry, I kept things simple and tried to recycle the original sky. Maybe it lacks a spaceship wreck in the crater or some vegetation in the foreground, but the scenery like this is more eloquent to me. Hope you'll enjoy.
June 9th, 2012 @ 6:15 am
Hey watch this video!
June 9th, 2012 @ 7:32 am
i really like the idea. so this one is my entry. i hope you enjoy.
    June 9th, 2012 @ 7:34 am
i left it really dark toned because i thought when there are optical flares inserted in the post it could fit perfect ;)

Hey What's up Andrew!
Here is my humble contribution for the challenge. I hope you like it.

Awesome Kramer, Greetings from Ghana
thanks for the challenge n your tuts.
here is the link to my work....critics are welcome.!/photo.php?fbid=445550405455965&set=a.101267333217609.2860.100000030297123&type=3&theater
    June 11th, 2012 @ 9:06 am
You said critics are welcome, and I never want to be harsh, but just help people out. I would work on your edges between the horizon and the mountains. Put something there to obscure it maybe? And the spaceship hovering over the scene is just, there. But I love the sky replacement! Excellent work! My submission is posted just below yours (Matt Goff) take a look and tell me what you think! I'd love to hear what I did well/what I need to work on.

My last design I hope you like
    June 15th, 2012 @ 7:19 am
I see your for-ground elements are out of focus but then the far away is sharply in focus. My eye tells me there should be a slight blur (subtle) out of focus effect on those far away objects. Other than that I think you did a great job seamlessly joining all the art together.

Hey Andrew whatever happened to this? Was it abandoned? You also had mention a tutorial on "train that is repeated into the distance during a camera pan" has that also been removed from the radar with the release of Element(not to take anything away from Element, it's friggen awesome)?
    August 25th, 2012 @ 4:08 am
