In the spirit of kicking things off with a BANG, here is Sam Loya in our latest adventure, SHELL SHOCKED! As you might expect, we will be creating a few tutorials based on this video so you should probably check it out!
We shot this with a Canon 5D and an 85mm lens, I also want to thank my friend Eric for letting us film at this location!
PS, the back-story is Sam was doing something else and then he did this.

Great work AK… oh, you to Sam… haha.
A new Year with a new project!!!!
Hi Andreaw, great video, very funny..I would like in the future to see something with red-scarlet if you can.I would see the different by color.
Wow. I didn’t see that coming.
Sam Loya at his best!
No i am the best!
no… I am… wait… u r
No, I am the best
HAHAHAHAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAHHA it never rains until it pours, poor sam!! can i have his gun?
Amazing, AS USUAL.
Hey, I have the same M16 gun prop at home!
Awesome video! Looking forward to more awesome Video Copilot tuts, it’s how I learnt After Effects!
Thank you and Happy New Year!
it’s not even an M16.
its an M4A1 with an RAS rail system, a holographic sight, and an LE crane stock.
where did you get ur props from?
Haha awesome. Can’t wait for the tutorials!
Can you go over the color grading you did for this? The footage was absolutely beautiful.
There we go Again
i thought it was a cool little random video and i loved the result of all the cg elements from this. and since i know people will want to know how you made the frag grenade can you show us in cinema 4D this time? a lot of people including myself use cinema 4D so it would benefit us. i know that this an after effects website and some people dont like you doing cg but in all honestly i like it when you do cg since it technically is most of what is going to be composited into after effects. overall job well done! (:
When he won’t make a cinema 4D tutorial, you can use blender just for once: http://www.blenderguru.com/videos/make-a-hand-grenade-explode-part-1-or-2 This tutorial ends with almost the same result as in the video.
YES! I agree! Use blender
I agree, too most guys here have afterEffects and no 3d software, but blender is free…
hello everybody I am Tunisian and I love this site . I learned many things that will help me to do my final project study thanks andrew kramer and sam loya ^^
wow , that what am waiting for
Awesome video.!
Jajajaja it’s really fun but exelent job Andrew!!!
like i say you are still my supter star
:D:D
Great work as always, love seeing these types of projects!
Now when can we expect to hear you comment on the “Action Movie FX” app? Don’t think we didn’t notice a poster for a film starring Tino Hertz and Sam Loya?
A M A Z I N G! Good job Andrew
Now THAT is funny. Brilliant.
I have one cool suggestion. Let’s see one where Sam actually gets to come out alive.
That was hilarious

Suck it up Sam! If you are going out like that you should have jumped on a few of those puppies to save that crate!!!
Love the DoF you can pull from the 5D MkII – it has that film feel for sure.
Color and CG elements look great! AK and his team still the best!

Is Demon Cam tutorials finished?
WOW! I’m rollin! That was hilarious!!!!
HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa
Great one, Andrew
I think the scene was Sam throw the bomb away is the same technique of the bullet tutorials
Hey Andrew could you please make a 3ds max beginners guide as you made for the after effects those 10 training videos..
please please please it would be a great help..
If you buy the Video Copilot ‘The bullet’ I believe he does something like that
Really good DVD you should take a look at it
Just be careful when buying DVDs (internationally) I love the videocopilot products but the once I bought a non-download product it came thru the post then found not only the import duty (which is fair enough) but the carrier adds a significant admin fee for collecting the tax which means I would not do that one again – shame because the product (Action Essentials II) was excellent, I would very much prefer a download product.
O Man What a action i like it specially Sam face expressions
Hi
Happy New Year
And I want Element 3d
Happy New Year To All of You & Specially To Sam
Can’t wait make it fast
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Excellent !
As usual…
Je souhaite à Andrew, Sam, et toute l’équipe de VideoCopilot une bonne année 2012 !!!
I wish you, Andrew, Sam, and the whole team of VideoCopilot a happy new year 2012!
Great effect – awesome storytelling!
Happy new year from Germany!
is the dof and grenade in the shot where the grenade gets thrown back by sam real or fake? either way it looks BEAUTIFUL
Awesome! Looking forward to the tutorial!
Hey Andrew, since we are in a 2012, and you know all those movies about apocalypse, why not making a tutorial, how to destroy a building or a house….
Happy new year btw. and great video “Shell Shocked”, cant wait tutorial…
Very nice – looking forward to tutorials BUT not wanting to make myself unpopular with the fans around here but:
Whilst I like the slow-mo on the grenade when Sam threw it – surely it wouldn’t fly “flat” like that.
And the sparks from the return fire didn’t quite look right to me.
God bless Sam Loya and may he live a long happy life)))))) So many times he is torn into pieces, struck by lightning, turned into demon… poor Sam))))))
Magnificent editing, cool effects and sound. The environment makes it look more natural. Interesting idea of the midpoint – the unexpected turn of events that shows the potential of the director.
Really good work!!!
As well as any others, i would be glad about a Cinema 4D tutorial this time. This is a pretty nice job done by the direction of Andrew and facial contortion of Sam
Awesome video.
Btw, I downloaded the action movie fx app on my iphone, and everything looked so videocopilot-ish, I almost suggested you to sue these people, but than I checked the credits and I realised it was made by you!
Why didn’t you tell us about the app?
hei andrew this is not fair, how many times u killed sam loya
great work, like it so much………
Very nice Work….Poor Sam Loya.He always get himself killed….By the way,Can we shoot stuff like this with the 7D?..What is the best out of 5d mark ii and 7D?…….
Happy New Year Andrew Kramer and Video Copilot team!
Happy new year from Gabonese!
Really good work!!!
Very nice!
…and Sam expires in yet another cool way, happy new ye co-p
Hahahha this was absolutly hilarious xD Especially the backstory hahahah! Way to go videocopilot-crew!
Awesome again!
So short, but I enjoyed it so much.
I am looking forward on those tutorials.
As always I am curious how you did the sound part for the movie.
Hmm wait .. this is from Die Hard 2 isnt it? The Scene were John McClane is trapped in a Cockpit and the Bad Guys throwing Granades in it. I thought it was with Bruce Campbell but well i was wrong … it was with Sam Loya! YippiKAYEEEE Motherrenderer!
Awesome video.
Btw, I downloaded the action movie fx app on my iphone, and everything looked so videocopilot-ish, I almost suggested you to sue these people, but than I checked the credits and I realised it was made by you!

Hysterical!
Laughing my but off.
The grenade flying in slow-mo…. 3dMax?
You could do a tutorial on the gradient of this film.
Way it was filmed, if used cinestyle.
Making of A would be nice.

amazing.I am waiting for your tuttorialls
i love your tutorials
Impressive as always. Looking forward to many awesome tutorials in 2012.
We expect so much and you still excel x)
Perhaps a fan should make a forum for us to show our work; instead of spamming this forum…(as good as user vids are)
hahaha sam…
This was great, very well done!
F… loool
Blender?? Please?? Blender can do a really cool grenade! See!! http://www.blenderguru.com/videos/make-a-hand-grenade-explode-part-1-or-2
Take a look at the Finished Result
Blender just got a new render engine! It can make some amazing things! You really should make more tuts with blender
Thanks for posting! Great Video!
I agree!!
I just wanted to continue the sequence…got nothing special. BUT, in case you haven’t seen or heard- Andrew has a product called The Bullet where he shows how to do the Matrix style bullet effects and how to create A BULLET in 3ds Max, Cinema 4D and BLENDER…cool, eh? Here is the link:https://www.videocopilot.net/products/the_bullet/
Now that I got one Andrew’s product promoted I think I SHOULD GET A FREE PRODUCT FROM HIM…right???
I agree with the gentleman about the Bullet. I bought the product from Andrew and he does show some cool stuff including building the bullet in Blender. There are tons of Blender tutorials out there though that are pretty cool. I believe the guy that does a lot of them is also named Andrew.
Blenderguru I think.
Yes I have the bullet! But just because we did one does not mean he can’t do more
Blender is the wave of the future
HAHAHAHA amazing… excellent job but Sam very pity……..
OH NO, SAM IS DEAD???
How will Andrew make videos in the future???
OH WAIT…Sam died a lot of times before but we keep seeing him all the time!!! How COOL is that? ;D
SAAAAAMMMMM! NOOOOOOOO! LOL. Wait a minute is Sam a mute? were is the screaming?
WOW!! That was really amazing…..nothing less expected from video-copilot anyway. HAPPY NEW YEAR GUYS!!
Amazing, men! XD
Very good!
what the 85 mm lenses for? why 35 mm didn’t work out?
I think you’re confusing optics and film
andrew… where the 3d element ??
Amazing
What is the f/ of the lens?
Thanks
its over 9000!
I love it! From one filmmaker to another, the shot of Sam after he throws the grenade breaks the 180 degree rule and feels awkward. He is on the right side of the frame when he throws the grenade and the next shot he is on the left; it seems as if he was blowing himself up with the grenade, instead of the enemy. Hope this doesn’t offend you.
In my weak opinion, Robert Nellums, I don’t think it breaks “180 degree rule”. I played it back for ten times and still cannot get where the rule is broken! While the actor is throwing the grenade he is on the right side of the frame, but gradually the grenade becomes the focal part of the frame. This lets an editor use any frame shot from other sides. We can see that the shooting is active and dynamic and even then, the actor is mostly on the right and center of the frame after explosion.
That’s what I think about this! However, maybe I’m wrong)))))))
What is the most interesting to me did Andrew use Element 3D to generate the falling grenades?
Well, I’m baffled by the comment. This grenade shot is a beautiful shot. I was more concerned about finding the frame in which it changes from the real grenade to the CGI grenade but for my own learning. I did find it and at full speed it is seamless. I am anxious to see the tutorial on that part to see if I am right now on how to do the effect. If I am right, Andrew has taught me well.
No, the video is great. It is an amazing film. But, screen direction is what I’m referring to. The action BEFORE the grenade throw is taken place with the actor on the right side of the screen. After the grenade throw, the actor is backwards. Look at what he is taking cover behind. It also moves as well. After reading this, I bet Andrew agrees with me.
Really nice video, the idea was very creative, haha sam looked so into it! but i will say the CG grenade looked a bit to nice not as ruged as a rugged as the real Grenade which would really help the over all look, just a thought id mention.
the light used at the launch of granana was very good
WOW!!!!! That’s great… really nice..
and sam like always a victim of andrew kramer fantasy…..
You ‘re great Andrew
You can really see the acting get better over the years. Can we get a twixtor tutorial with the AK flare and jokes we’ve all come to hate…err….enjoy. Great work bud.
A.Grenade is an awesome actor… now he’s playing with Sam Loya.. Sam must be proud!!! lol!!
A. Grenade !!!….from now on Sam Loya will be known as the ” Indestructible SAM ” .. well ,something like that…VideoCopilot rules !!
this canon 5d Is ”AMAZING” lol

Andrew would you please help do a tutorial about the effects used in the end credits of Sherlock Holmes, Please!!! would be so awesome.
Andrew Kramer u are Mr. Amazing in AE, Sam Loya . . . ?? Fire in the hole !!! hahaha… – 2 Thumb Up for VC.
very good video. I have to say, by watching your tutorials and using products, I have become a better visual effects artist than I would have been on my own. Thanks Mr. Andrew!
Has A. Grenade been in many other films. His name seems to ring a bell.
LOL! Sam just never gets a break
Wow this looks better than some hollywood movies man!…i like the 3D grenade (A. Grenade) hah…assuming it is 3D..unless u have the best camera in the world (Canon 5D is good though =P)
wow this is amazing..love the quality of the camera..i use a Canon t3i Rebel…amazing quality as well..was there a lens flare in one of the shots? love the CGI grenade (a.grenade) =P
Plz Andrew, make a lot of 3Ds max tutorials !!!
Awesome vid, Sam was looking pretty awesome in this. Great scene; amazingly shot and structured! Gotta love the ending, poor guy heh
awesome vid as always Andrew! haha!!
hey andrew nice video as always
by the way i saw sam loya’s name and your wifes name on the bad robot action movie fx app for iphone hahahaha and i saw a couple of video copilot lens flares
Excellent. Nice back story, too.
BTW, the Action Movie FX app is great! Good job on that, Andrew.
How about a slow-motion explosion of the grenade???
WAIT – were those ELEMENT grenades?
GOD! I read it and I thought so too BUT, honestly I don’t thing the grenades were from ELEMENT. What I understand is ELEMENT is a plugin that generates particles for motion graphics.
For this compositing work, I believe ELEMENT is not a good option because particles don’t have a controllable position; In this case, the grenades would be flying around everywhere.
But who knows? Maybe the changes Andrew is doing are meant to do compositing work?
reallllllly???? I HOPE SO! that would be so epic!! 0_o
@John Yeah, I don’t really think that the grenades were ELEMENT, but they COULD be – trapcode particular has directional controls as well as impact options for a wall or floor where you can bounce the particles. The difference is that Particular only allows you to use 2D sprites. IF the VCP Gang has figured out how to be a 3D version of Particular – then you’ve got that grenade scene REAL easily – in RECORD time. especially compared to dropping 3D grenade models in there individually.
AND – it would make ELEMENT the new must-have plugin industry-wide.
Nice! one good tip, make the muzzle flashes transfer mode into add instead of normal, just makes it blend better with the footage! great job with the 3d grenade!
Awesome!this is really cool!i waiting for elements!
Happy New Years everyone..
That was great..
I have to get a seat belt for my chair as
fall off laughing when all the grenades where
thrown back.. LOL
I hope this will be alot of fun…
Dave
Happy New Year Everybody! Andrew, good work, as always!!!

) cheer !
Happy new year . . . nice wrkk specially Andrew’s Acting. . . that panic faces . . .:D
It is Sam Loya, meanwhile Andrew must be recording which means he is behind the camera,
First time I really laughed at your videos!
Waiting for tuts….
I smell some dynamics!!
Andrew, tell Sam for next time – his left hand should be gripping the receivers and not the magazine while shooting.
Keep on rockin’!
Hahaha! Great concept! Love the ending!
hahah i like the concept of the Story…
)))
I love the film look Andrew…should make for an interesting tutorial!
Mr. Andrew what course did you graduate?
Awesome, grenades is ELEMENT’s??
OH?In China I can’t open Vimeo or youtube?because of the Great Firewall of China.I’m so sad.I want to cry.I want to see your video as soon as possible. But I’m in China. >_<
Aah nice Video
But Andrew, is there a way you can make a film with Sam, in which he DOESNT die?
Immortal SAM! xDD nice work Andrew!!
Oh guys please help me .. im craving for that gun sound effect @ 0:15 (the one thats coming from the enemy) ive been hearing that and i really want to put it in one of my vids
great , how can i do to be a good designer in visual effects
I have a good experince in 3D’s max and After Effects
KRAMER you need to see a Psycologist one day you might release the best exiting tutorial and as usual we will think you are still sane but you have already lost it. THE MOST EXITING PROMO to have ever seen.
were you a comedian in your other life?
Hey Andrew awesome video and great job with the new app
Great Movie and VFX demonstration. Good job guys.
Why 88mm lens?Did u use Nd filter?
wow Very nice . I Love you ANDREW !
Andrew please stop killing SAM!!!
I think Andrew hates SAM is there any tutorial that SAM is involved that he has ever said nice thing about him. If not sucide on top of the tolest buildign in newyork to lightning, grenade, vampire look and all teh rest. Please ANDREW dont kill our SAM in the next tutorial
Can you tell me the exact model of Canon 5d that you used? I want one! thanks
Do you have $3000? Plus the extra $2000 to pay for the lens? If so, can I have $5000, please?
Canon 5D MK II – with a 85mm f/1.2 or f/1.8 lens.. and those lenses are pretty expensive mate
Haha awesome! Academy award goes to: ‘A.Grenade’
awesome! you’re the best!
This gave me a laugh, great work!
sam…again… god…(y so easily[always?] die…)
Lol, great stuff Andrew, its amazing how much work goes into something so short, this short film should be called ” Revenge of the grenades”
Lol, that was freaking hilarious!
Finally, a film with a back story I believe…
u rock guys awesome tutorial and plug-ins……..
Hey Andrew! Very nice video, i definitely love it. Do you have a releasedate for Element yet? Because we’ve been waiting for months and months and yet there is no sign of it at all.. By the way, the color correction looks fantastic, any chance of doing a tutorial on CC?
You’re the best, keep on doing what you do!
So nice and so funny i liked it lolzzz keep it up Kramer
Perhaps the greatest trick Andrew pulled was convincing us that Sam is a real person and not a special effect. If you look at AE 10 there will be a Sam Loya Effect. It’s only going to be 8 bit at first
Sam Loya is awesome So nice and so funny i liked it
ahhaha awesome !
Salut Andrew!!
Hi , very good
Please insert the tutorial of this product !
Happy new Year dear ANDREW !
Once again Sam Loya is screwed loool! well done!how did u generate these grenades?
Happy New year Andrew and to the family and rest of videocopilot:
As always, amazing inspiration.
If you do make a tutorial based on this, could you advise us on how actors should or should not do blowback or recoil acting? Or should this be post work (i.e. slight camera shake and other distractions for the illusion)
I know I could google this, but I would rather hear from someone here or yourself.
Jim the Jelly Baby
Awesome! Although it looks like so much time was put into the grenades, that the muzzle flashes suffered only enough attention to receive a glow effect. In other words, they weren’t composited very well. I like to double the flare with a radial blur or glow underneath for better blending, but that’s ok, AK has proven himself adept with muzzle flashes in the past, it wasn’t the focus of the video.
Great as usual Andrew!
I loved the color grading too! So film look!
Sam,Turorial porfavor! :/
Hey can we get a tutorial on how to do the grenade scene?
Great job.
I’m a big fan of second Act.
wauu!! muy vacano, y gracias por tus vídeos tutoriales
Real sweet that is. Really nice.
Hi Andrew
Happy New Year
This video was amazing
Well done, Kramer and Team, it is very good.
YA NEH! ntho tse ntle ele ka nnete. Great movie effects. Themba from South Africa
Awesome !
So beautiful ! I love the Optical Flares on the begining that’s was so beautiful and the end was prety funny and not expected.
Please publish more video that you are doing
Mr. Freddiew Wong here’s ur close competitor…Or a perfect competitor
Sam and Andrew u both rock buddy…:-D
LOL, as usual, the classic VC mix of impressive compositing, Sam’s rubber face, and a good dose of humor! Happy New Year!
good.RPG c4d tuts
I would like only to say. That muzzle flash is off. Doesn’t line up with the line of fire. I know it’s verry comon in most productions using VFX, but you can even see it on the screen shot on the main page:)
Good Video! Big problem though. The part where Sam shoots his M4 the first time you see a muzzle flash from Action Essentials 2 pack which is a side flare. You should have used a front flare. So a round flare. Look at the tutorials inside Action Essentials 2 the muzzle flash tutorial. Its the same angle but different flare. Look out for small details like that.
But don’t get me wrong, its only a small detail. All your other stuff is awesome and very useful.
Umm.. You DO know that this guy, Andrew, is the guy who made Action Essentials?.. Why should he watch his own tutorial.. that’s just dumb.
haii kramer what about 2011 blog show?
Like the scene in the movie “Where Eagles Dare”, Clint Eastwood was thrown a german grenade and he threw it back. Then they threw a couple more but Clint ran away and escaped. Poor Sam! Now we have to make him better by turning him to a Cyborg.
think we’ll never see sam loya again..
rest in pieces sam!
How i can send a Topic ? i know not . please help me
you are the best andrew
i’m from Burundi
That ending had me rolling! LOL….Awesome movie…
Hahaha amazing,… It’s gonna be really good tutorial.
85mm? what aperture size???? I NEED TO KNOW THIS!!!
85mm f/1.2 !!
OK, when I grow up I want to be like you! LOL Great stuff!!
I’m an executive who plays around with AE in my spare time for fun (how nerdy is that?!) and I just love your site. Looking forward to the tutorial.
Andrew Kramer, you are the best!
Do you use fake guns or real ones without bullets? If you use fake ones, where do get them?
I also want to know this! and the granades are 3D, right?
U are After Effect God !
MORE POWER VIDEO COPILOT..
fix that explosion at the end
excellent! Please color correction tutorial. thanks
I think that around the time of the 200th tutorial, you should string together “The many deaths of Sam Loya”
So we’re supposed to use the eyedropper tool to figure out what color Sam Loya is in real life?
Hi Andrew

Guys check this out!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO-HLgRaA_g&feature=youtu.be
I made this video to show what’s going on on the other side of the battlefield! i just hope andrew doesn’t sue me
I just did it out of love ! Andrew you’re the best!!!!!!
i wanna be just like u andrew kramer
what’s the name of the that airsoft gun and where did you get it
Hi, I want to get the answer for what Manuel asked to. I am looking for realistic stag prop guns
Hello Andrew, I have a very important question for you! there is something I have to complete in a short amount of time and I want to ask you: How do you do your AMAZING Color Correction??? There has to be more to it than just “Curves” in AE. THANK YOU!!
The two stills of Sam Loya above are a convincing case for a new category at the Oscars: Best Male Action Face in a Foreign Film.
Very cool. The only thing wrong, which I noticed immediately, is that the grenade is rotating the wrong direction.
If you threw it side arm like that, it would roll of the finger tips and spin the other way.
Nice video, and the rifle is HK 416 ,not m16 or m4
))
