New Tutorial: Grenade Throw!

Get Down!! In this exciting new tutorial, we will build a super-slow motion grenade-throw entirely inside of AE with green screen footage. Learn to build a 3D nodal camera from 2D Tracking data (that is, create a camera that pans and tilts to match your footage) and simulate camera depth of field.

Be sure to watch for additional ideas on capturing moments in super-slow motion towards the end.

I'm currently producing a short film about the Russian advance on Berlin during WWII. I needed an effect for an artillery piece firing in slow-mo. I'm using a shell instead of grenade in this case. Works perfectly. Thanks Andrew. Many kudos to you and your talented team.

Nice Techniques....but about lenses.. how can i know when i use 35 and when 50 and when 80?
    January 18th, 2012 @ 8:14 am
Best way is just to experiment so you know what each one looks like and then you can decide which one looks like what you want.

Thank you, Andrew!! You are the master of special effects, very nravyatsya your lessons, although it is a pity that in English, but in Russia ??????????? only half of the lessons. I would like more lessons on 3D graphics, the introduction of 3D objects in the video, animation.

Andrew, btw you might wanna freeze the first clip to make sure the granade is not rotatin in Sam's hand : )
However, you're getting better and better in tutorial making!

January 18th, 2012 @ 2:16 pm
For some reason I can't play the recent tutorials on my iPhone. I like to watch them while at work. I truly appreciate the value of your tutorials Andrew. They've helped me reach a level that I never thought I could. I'm almost done with my first short film, and it has required so much work in AE and in 3dsMax, but every time I run into problems I always find the answers in your archived tutorials. Thanks so much!
Professional Stuff
January 18th, 2012 @ 3:30 pm
Everybody read this carefully, and especially Mr. Andrew Kramer and VideoCopilot Company and please mr. andrew
show (Display) this message in the first line:

You are doing a lot of tutorials and thanks for that but what the benefit for professional people?? the answer is nothin!!
because your (with all my respects) your tutorials is repetitive I mean you just try to use after effects
and always repeat these steps a lot such as (color correction and curve adjustment and fast blur and so on...)
so in this grenade tutorial you should be show people how did you remove the string and keying the
grenade or how to make it in 3D max instead of color correction and box blur and all that
beginner stuff so if you can't, don't do more tutorials and if you could show the professional
people that. there is a lot of movies like 2012 and transformer and avatar and so on...
created using cgi technique try to give some tips if you can about how to create it even if you can't create
the whole geometry. so beginner people say thanks for these repetitive beginner tutorials I have been read somewhere
someday a comment and it says for begginer people not for professionals actually.
and I agree with that with 85 - 97 precent.
so I hope you read this and reply it and make it first message on this page
so all the people can read it and if you can't then I will say there is no democracy and freedom to express the real thing.

My regards for you
    Gary Bird

I'm beginning to think this column's Moderator has been killed in a grenade explosion... Professional Stuff's indecipherable post above (and many others) is making a mockery of your statement below: "Before Posting - We're trying to encourage more thoughtful commenting. Please take a moment to write a meaningful response to this post. Also remember to read the rules on posting first"... :)
    January 19th, 2012 @ 6:58 am
make a tutorials inspired by 2012, transformers etc? of course.... what a great idea... movie with millions of budget and month and month of work in a 40 min tutorials, why not.... specialy this guys dont reveal of their secret. what a great idea you have.... -_-

I always thought this website is all about creating great effects and results with simple steps... Now what's wrong with that....
    January 26th, 2012 @ 5:33 am
WOW hold on there mister Professional Stuff!!! I think that you don't understand the meaning of this website! Here you can learn everything about after effects. But....if you followed the tuts from the beginning. It start's simple and it's getting more prof. in time.
If you want toe learn stuff like Avatar and Transformers then google for professional filmschools, man!
And the meaning of videocopilot tuts = (pay attention now!) take a look at the tutorials => don't copy the tutorial but use the technics for your own effects!
Sorry dude, but if you are looking for Avatar came to the wrong place.....for now!

Anybody correct me if I'm wrong
January 18th, 2012 @ 4:39 pm
I have no idea what you are talking about. haha I love this site and the content. Just the way it is.

Heyy! Andrew Kramer, my name is Yasmani Ceballos. My friend Lester Suri and I have gathered some money to buy your nice dvd and we are learning a lot from your tutorials and we have done very interesting things. We followed your tutorials here in Cuba. We would like that in an upcoming tutorial you make a realistic "tornado". Sorry for my English.

u guys r great.
GB answer me
January 19th, 2012 @ 2:00 am
Mr.Gary Bird I don't want to argue with you but let me tell you
these things:
1- I didn't insult anybody

2- let me ask you this:
don't you know how to use curve adjustment? don't you know how to use masking technique?? don't you know how to use some effects??? don't you know how to use a simple 2D tracking feature inside after effects???? don't you know how to use some expressions?????

3- if you don't know then my advice for you to check out this site (videocopilot) from basic stuff and go higher ok???

4- I encourage Mr.Kramer to create advance professional stuff like 2012 film or avatar or transformer and many others because Mr.kramer is not one guy Mr.Gary Bird they are company ok???????

5-let me ask another question don't you want to learn or at least to know (if you are beginner) how to create advanced professional 3D stuff in 3d max or any other 3d package applications just like high budget movies Im pretty sure you do and everybody would.

6- if you don't like my article then everyone have a view point
and I think its the free way to express what you have inside your mind.

answer me????
    Ilaiya Bharathi
    January 19th, 2012 @ 12:32 pm
I do understand your view point... but the way you put your point across was kinda rude... and c'mon... its like you are demanding Avatar standard effects from a free tutorial forum... You are not asking.. You are DEMANDING... and I thought there is a separate section in this forum for tutorial requests...

And why did you choose only video copilot as your target. There are many other forums where you have to pay and watch tutorials.. why don't you pose the same question there..?? Why here.. Because its free? so you don't have to shell a dollar anywhere else..????

And talking about great affects.. who thought one can crash a meteor on earth... who thought its possible for beginners to create Iron man's hud.. and who thought its possible to destroy Sam by lightning strike... just using after effects...!!! He's done amazing tutorials and he still surprises many of us with his simple and effective techniques...

And for some reason I fail to understand how you call yourself professional if you desperately need tutorials to enhance your work..

I don't know about you.. but this website is working just fine for lots of us... and to be honest.. I feel if you are "Professional"... then you should be able to figure out a way to crash a building just like they showed in 2012.. all you need is dust elements.. a cg building with interior details, cg humans and props, Rayfire plugin.. You know how to use that plugin right... Andrew demonstrated that pretty recently!!!
    Gary Bird
    January 19th, 2012 @ 5:09 pm
Your reply simply proves my point about the lack of Moderation in these posts. And, if you actually read my previous comment, I never said you insulted anybody. So - RELAX, and enjoy the tutorials, or if you don't like them, stop visiting :)
January 19th, 2012 @ 2:16 am
Amazing Tut... Learned lot of stuff from u.. U r such an INSPIRATION. Watched ur movie SUPER 8 yesterday... great use of OPTICAL FLARES... didn't know it can be used in so many diffrent lookd so cool.... Once again thanks for sharing ur knowledge with us... U R A LEGEND. Hope i could be like u one day....Warm wishes
Un-Professional stuff
January 19th, 2012 @ 2:21 am
Sorry "Professional Stuff", but you are a professional, you are getting paid and this is what you do. If you can't model a grenade, go to one of the many sites that teach you how to model, so what if it costs you 45 bucks. You can't have Andrew Kramer holding your hand throughout your career. Andrew teaches initiative and "sideways" thinking just as much as how to tint something dark green.
Always something useful in every tutorial.
Joey H.
January 19th, 2012 @ 7:39 am
Awesome tutorial Andrew! perhaps.. you can share all of the three green screen grenades? :P Thanks
January 19th, 2012 @ 9:18 am

January 19th, 2012 @ 8:41 pm
Wow...the comments are getting longer and longer its just shows how popular videocopilot is..keep it up andrew! i think mr. professional stuff needs help hehehe this site is not only for beginners you know alot of proffessional people dont know that theres still alot to learned in AE thats why we have to keep on track with the oracle mr andrew kramer...... :)
Encourage and help this website
January 20th, 2012 @ 12:55 am
Caution: dont read this unless you had read my messages above and I strongly suggest you to copy my messages into your computers and read it
slowly and closely and take very big moment if you try to reply it.

I say again to everybody I want you read my messages and ideas (Professional Stuff) - (GB answer me) above very carefully on this page and also read the people answers.
I do apologize if I disturb or making anyone get upset or injured (no offence at all) including Mr.Andrew Kramer and his Company
but I think the ideas should provide for anyone so we can create more advanced
world with evolution and thought and ideas, dont remain thousand years left with one idea and reject the others.

try to get benefit from the others by taking the good thing from them and give them your thoughts and in that way I believe the world will change and the civilization will create.

1- I want to say that is a company not just andrew kramer by himself, and I want you to ask yourselves why
company like this put and waste all that time and effort for creating tons of a tutorials??? of course there is payback in the other side
of course they get paid a lot of many for doing that. for that reason I ask andrew and the whole company to create tutorials for you not
for me because (without any offences) Iam not needing repetitive tutorials with curve adjustment and particle system effects etc... and so
as you people unless you are a beginner.

2- So you may say will what Mr.Kramer and his company will get from all of this in the end then I will give an example for that,
high budget movies like a transformer - titanic - avatar - spider man - 2012 and many others... what they will get from
working months and months and may be years and spending 200 million dollars or so?? my answer
they will get 1,000,000,000 dollars or higher number and prizes and oscars and you count.
so if videocopilot company will think that way of course they will become the best website video tutorials ever
created in the internet of human history and even way better than bringing a teacher to teach you at your home or in school or at any where else
I think now you see how its work. everybody will get the profit in the end by giving and taking.

3- I just want to say to this guy (Ilaiya Bharathi)any anyone else who think the way he believe, you said there is a lot of forum and I have to get
pay to learn these advanced stuff ok now that mean you accuse "" that is for beginner people instead as if its
professional video tutorials website as its shows on the title bar while I try to develop the site for you not for me Iam who putting the ideas for you
because I know everybody wants the biggest hits.
and Please people don't get me wrong (((people concentrate in this point please))).

4- You may ask me why dont you do all that things for us and show us that and that would really what everybody want in the end
the answer is because Im not a company Im just putting ideas to these websites and I want you to vote on that to make this website
the best in history of the internet as video tutorials website.
and by the way Im professional in a lot of software and almost expert in some of them in computer science
but I never had a chance to worked on a website company before in the internet.

5- People will ask me why did you choose this website? my answer is because I found a lot of people like this site and I really want to encourage you to vote on
developing that.

I really hope my language very understandable

My Regards for everybody and specialy for Mr.Andrew Kramer and his Company.
and Try My Ideas and Advices it Won't Be Disappointed I Recommend You To Try it.
    January 20th, 2012 @ 2:05 am

    January 21st, 2012 @ 7:13 pm
Yeah...thanks chris!! TO THE PERSON (WRITING LENGTHY COMMENTS) Understand this "Andrew Kramer has not take the sole responsibility to teach you everytihing about VFX n motion graphics." He is just helping the community. and he is doing a lot more than others without charging u any fee. He has even provided some Action essentials elements free of cost in a recent tut. So dont b Greedy. Appreciate him for his effort and spending his time on teaching us with great techniques. :)

I would love a tutorial on that plasma grenade. I have a scene that would be perfect on. I started to model one based off of what little I can see in your tutorial video, but my texturing skills need a little more work. Any orthos or wireframes would be appreciated as well.

Awesome tutorial, one of my favorites so far (the shatter is up there on my list as well).

And where do i get so nice magazines with real (fake) bullets?
January 25th, 2012 @ 3:15 am
Congratulations for the tuts!!! only one question, where i can buy the guns and the grenades props?, there is any online shop or something?
January 27th, 2012 @ 3:38 pm
Awesome video and tutorial as always! Would you be able to post the keyed files for the other two grenades? I have two of the round ones in the center and I'm too lazy to film and key them myself :/
Keep up the good work!

Nice work guys

I have purchased the Adobe suit not knowing much about its capabilities. However it goes without saying such a large investment also needs training budget. You have put the seed in my head and my thirst for knowledge is growing. I think you make it quite plain why you put your tutorials out there, and that is to sell your products. You are not a charity to budding filmmakers but a business and I think people should recognise that fact. I will be buying more products from you and am also grateful for the free insight thus provided. I know I will have to pay to learn more, so itís a win, win situation from my perspective!
