Anouncing New Plug-in: Element

Hey what’s up! It may be Wednesday but I’m excited to share some details about a new Video Copilot plug-in called Element. Formally Code-named Atom, like a secret agent, the new plug-in Element is a 3D geometry-based particle style plug-in for After Effects with many powerful features. I’m working on a demonstration soon that should answer a lot of questions and explain how the plug-in works in detail. Be sure to check out the mini-poster for a list of features that will be available.

All four images were created with Element inside of After Effects.

    1.Full Depth of Field support
    2. 3D Particle Falloff
    3. Cutom emitter styles, particle stances
And from all of them: reflections, glow.

Mr. Kramer,
As a young media producer/motionographer you are certainly a great role model. The level of excellence you operate at is something I will always strive to surpass. Looking forward to learning about this new plug-in!

June 22nd, 2011 @ 6:36 pm
this is actually impressive. i'm curious about this plugin's "shader" possibility and its "capacity" of solving reflections / refractions. anyways, it would be awesome not to have to switch to a 3d package for a more complex particle animation. (like something particular can't handle)

June 22nd, 2011 @ 7:19 pm
So how does this differ from Particular?
    June 22nd, 2011 @ 9:56 pm
Hey Tom, actually it is quite unlike Particular, it generates particles yes but in a very different way. When I post the demonstration video, it should help illustrate what it does and how the system works. Best!

Do you remember Knoll Light Factory?... Andrew Kramer erase it from my Effects and Preset Palette. I can't wait for the next uninstall process.. hope you know what I mean.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Knoll Light , Mr Knoll got too busy
They did patch some 3D ness into it but Optical Flares is better on many levels , it will be pointless to continue with knoll light. I bet ILM has even switched to Optical Flares by now. LOL :)

    June 22nd, 2011 @ 10:25 pm
Hey sahis, Andrew and his team worked hard and spent a lot of time in making this plugin. Let's not make them stupid, okay.

A day's work is worth a day's pay. They deserve something in return of the hard works they've made.

Let's support them buy buying their works and using them wisely in our projects. It's good to share something for free, but this one consumes a lot of time and effort (I'm sure) to just give away as a gift. And besides, it's already a gift of having the chance to have your own copy of the plugin.
    Rich
    June 23rd, 2011 @ 12:57 pm
Optical Flares jumpfrogged the industry leader in its class for less than a third the price, Element will probably be affordable.
    June 23rd, 2011 @ 5:58 pm
Folks, I know a lot of you guys (and gals) are asking for the freebies still, and I can appreciate that, but Daniel is right. A day's work is worth a day's pay.

I lot of you guys out there learning this are still really young and I know you cannot afford the pricey stuff, but as far as industry goes, this is really cheap. And as most of the tutorials don't require any money already other than AE and the 'puter you're on, it is a great chance to learn the software and build up a fairly decent portfolio - provided of course, you put your own spin on the skills learned. That alone is worth more than you can imagine! If I had that chance 25 years ago when I was starting out, I would be in a very different place. But the one thing that the whole crew at VC has that makes them good is, again, just as Daniel said, they work HARD.
1% talent ladies and gentlemen. 1% talent. 99% hard work.
    June 24th, 2011 @ 9:17 am

Hi andrew. it's looking awesome stuff…
June 22nd, 2011 @ 9:45 pm
I just hope it's not like WAY to expensive for us independent filmmakers. The lens flare was a bit of a let down and I had to make my own preset animation to get good lens flares. It's actually not bad...
    June 22nd, 2011 @ 10:48 pm
Well, now that I think about it, all of those pictures are possible to reproduce, even as video, in blender 3d. I'll have to experiment...
    Brian
    June 27th, 2011 @ 5:15 pm
Nick if a plug-in in the $100-$200 range is something you as an independent filmmaker considers "way too expensive", then perhaps you might want to consider another line of work in which you can actually make a living?

I have my doubts on it but still if this isn't a way of faking particle systems or elements than it has the potential to compete with Cinema 4D and After Effects compositing.

I wonder when it's the release date...

    June 25th, 2011 @ 8:00 pm
Video Copilot isn't exactly a company to doubt. I mean think about it, they've revolutionized the industry over and over. First with absolutely free, world-class tutorials, that are arguably better than anything you could learn at a design school. I've got a friend who graduated in the very top of his class from SCAD for Motion Graphics, and he's told me he's learned a ton from VC. Then there's their line of stock footage, once again revolutionizing the design and compositing industries with amazing stock-footage for cheaper than you'll find anywhere else. Finally you factor in plugins like Twitch and Optical Flares that once again, revolutionize the industry with amazing results at a small fraction of the price of the other guys. I'm sure this will be no different, and I guarantee it'll be worth every penny. I know I'll be buying it.

Now that you mention it, I've noticed more and more recently that the blood bursts and many other effects of Andrews are being used for a number of british commercials and TV spots. And people are being very creative with them. Using them for water, mud, paint etc.. They are a fantastic collection and we can all expect there to be many more examples as time rolls on. Well done for spotting that and well done Andrew for becoming a world wide phenomenon.

Andrew, I just like your works, help, and kindness.
They say, thers's 7 ancient wonders in the world. Now I call Adobe Systems the 7th Wonder of our time, and Andrew Kramer the 8th Wonder of our time. Also my wife asked me who's Andrew Kramer, I said to her, he's my Man of the Century, because,... it's After effects time, !!!
THANKS 4 EVERYTHING
June 23rd, 2011 @ 6:22 am
WOW! There are so many companies out there who would develop something like this specifically to further their own productions. And the VFX community would NEVER get their hands on it at ANY price... The fact that the Video Copilot team bring things like this to the masses is remarkable. Regardless of the price that it will retail at, one thing is for certain... This, just like OF, is going to be another 'essential' tool for tomorrows visual studios. Hats off to you YET AGAIN AK!

I admire the work you have done and do.
I like the quality of it all.

Cant stand the hero worship BS ie ' Gota have this now...OMG its so fabulous ...' etc etc

June 23rd, 2011 @ 10:58 am
Amazing this looks very promising...but my question is how well the ae render will handle all the calculations required for reflections, lights and shadows on both global and individual 3D elements, along with the animation and particule generation too? how long are the expected render times?

June 23rd, 2011 @ 11:21 am
Hmm… Well, if past is any precedent, then the elements in this new plug-in have probably already been used in some prior TV or film work that Andrew did with JJ Abrams… Now to find out which one used a 3D reflective particle system, I wonder… Hmmmmmmm….. Could be anything!

Also....I looked for something before and couldnt find it...now I need it again and still cant find how to do it...

3D Fire text. I know the text itself is made in like studio max or maya etc, Im suspecting the fire is done with FlumeFX...but im not sure....plus bringing it all over to AE....this is something I'm Sure alot of people would love to see explained.

Thanx for all your great work Andrew...Id never have gotten into AE if it wasnt for you!

June 23rd, 2011 @ 3:44 pm
Has Kramer released this already then? because the majority of these comments are ridiculous considering he hasn't shown a demo of what it can or can't do. However, it should be intresting since After Effects is only 2.5D and not a complete full-blown 3D applications such as Max or Maya etc.
    June 23rd, 2011 @ 6:06 pm
A lot of the folks learning this stuff and trying to build up skilz here cannot afford a 3D program - and the learning additions of those have either Xs on the renders or don't render at all. So, this is a great step into the realm of visuals that may not otherwise be available to a great number of people. I'm esp happy to see that so many people are actually asking for free stuff and plug-ins: it means they aren't stealing unlicensed software but are trying to learn and use honestly. That is VERY encouraging.

Besides, practically everything Kramer has ever put out is worth it's weight in gold (or at least Sam's weight in gold - that boy needs an OSCAR!) so, yeah, I can see why everyone is happy, albeit a bit prematurely.

June 23rd, 2011 @ 7:34 pm
One question though, in your description you say "All three pictures were created with Element inside AE." But there are four pictures, including the main promo pic. That first one is the sickest of them all, and looks a lot more complex than the other three. Is THAT going to be possible with Element as well? I assume yes... I hope yes... Please Andrew, say yes.

And as for free... I actually hope it's not free. I can only imagine what this took to make. You DESERVE to be paid. Bottom Line. Besides, the more money you raise, the more tutorials and stuff we can get (until JJ steals you away for good). Remember folks, we're competing with JJ Abrams here. We need to keep paying Andrew! :)
    June 23rd, 2011 @ 9:20 pm
Hey Byron, Yes all four were created, the last green one was added after the post was made and I forgot to update. Thanks!!
    June 23rd, 2011 @ 9:39 pm
    1. Awesome! I figured you wouldn't be that cruel to tease us with a poster of something from another program, but wanted to be sure.

    2. I've watched virtually every tutorial, and I bought your ultimate bundle. Love your stuff! So do all the people I make things for. I point them all in this direction, so they can learn how to do it themselves if they want to. I won't share the products (not fair to you), but I'll absolutely share where I got the free tutorials!

Hey it's very very interesting and congrats on pushing After Effect's limits. But got one question. The effects are quite photo-realistic and I'm wondering how will it effect the render time? I know Particular can be quite intensive on that subject. How does your plugin deals with the render and render time?

Hello. I must say this one has me the most excited, even more than Optical Flares. I am in the military and do photo/video work, and have spent so much time learning video graphics (typically reserved for the graphic artist MOS) and have used Optical Flares and many tutorials on this site for some of the video works I have done while in the military. I have to say I LOVE this place. After Effects is so much fun to do, and to see Commanders' eyes light up when they look at some text or lighting effects I have done is just awesome.

I. Cannot. Wait. To. Buy. This.

I have over the last couple years bought almost every product for my PC at home, and adding this to the mix will definitely keep me ABOVE my peers (with a big smile).

I have always made sure to spread the word on these products, on other Soldier who got on board with After Effects has also purchased things like Optical Flares. I love hearing people say "wow SGT how did you do that?" and telling them "videocopilot.net, check it out."

I can't wait to see what I can come up with, with this thing...

This looks great guys. I can tell you've all been hard at work. This doesn't look at all like any particle system I've worked with.
However, with the name "element" and use of "sub-atomic" particles. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you've found a way to effectively "nest" particles within other particle systems. ...much like pre-composing, but with particles? This looks awful good for a particle system in AE, however.

Andrew Kramer seems to have found a way to reverse-engineer 3DSMax and pack it as an AE plugin *chuckle*
Well done. Can't wait to see how much cpu/time something that looks this good takes to render.

This looks awesome, you're always putting something new and incredibly inspiring up like this. The one thing I hope though, is that people don't use this as an excuse not to use 3D programs like C4D. I already see people posting about stuff like that, and it just seems stupid to give up learning a 3D program for a plugin, even if it's an amazing plugin.

On a side note: I see your action movie essentials EVERYWHERE, I think I even saw them in Battle: LA when they drop the grenade in the pool...

hey
hope it should users friendly like others product. Please keep going ......... see u next time
June 28th, 2011 @ 10:26 am
It looks interesting, but my question would be if we can actually get results like on the poster with it - because those look 3D and AE does a great job of faking 3D sometimes but isn't completely 3D capable. So how about you give us a little more info about it's limitation, maybe even it's price... :D

June 29th, 2011 @ 1:27 am
hey andrew,

well i hope this is more powerful than particular, geometry based,, well it means it will use some 3d particles meshes. what i mean to say that it wont be like particular that generates particles into 3d space, though the particles its self are not 3d.....
any how, i am hoping that this also have some powerful engines like physics, air, and off course depth of field....... it will be much fun if it goes beyond the particular..... finger crossed... anyway thanks andrew for everything.

Wow, this looks VERY good!
Good 3D-generating plug-ins for After Effects is really something the VFX community needs, because apart from Particular, there aren't really that many other quality plug-ins.

I think that this plugin will work just like a ProAnimator...
Create particles inside it's own UI, not the AE's one...
And the main feature will be camera sync. :)
If I'm wrong, then I'll buy it :)
William
July 4th, 2011 @ 6:39 am
Hey Andrew,

Great work there, it seems awesome, and I'm super hyped for it! Seems like a sort of 3D version of CC Ball Action or like Particular on steroids. :P

Also, can the particles be animated? Can the 3D geometry move and "flow" smoothly and independently? That would just be phenomenal.

I know this question has been asked a lot, and I am sincerely reluctant to ask this, but I'm just so ridiculously hyped for this, that I cannot help but ask: When will the demonstration of this plug-in come out, and the plug-in itself released?

Lastly, you said that those images were created purely in AE, but does it work together, and can you create the 3D geometry in an external programme, such as 3Ds Max, Cinema 4D, Maya, and then import it into AE then use the plug-in to animate? If it is possible, I'll be amazed, but even if it can't, it'll still be awesome!

You work magic, and I salute you, Mr Kramer.

Hi Andrew and VC staffs.

These are my thoughts, I don't know anything about this plug-in.

Trapcode Particular is 400$ so I maybe Element will be in that range. Andrew Kramer's stuff is usually less expensive than it should IMHO, and these 100 free tutorials saved more lives than the New York fire departement this year, kidding....

As someone from VC said, it's not expensive for a customizable particle system, Max and Maya cost 3000-6000$ and they don't necessarly give perfect results, I'm starting to do more and more of particle things in AE.

For us waiting to see a fbx or obj option in AE (import real 3D models) I would speculate that we'll have to wait a little longer. Element will probably offer built-in 3D geometry, but no import option... This would be such a breakthrough for AE, it's like to good to be true. Nuke has the FBX option I think. The option of importing a 3D model would go way beyond the single purpose of a particle system (i.e. some people would use the plugin just to import the model, would shoot 1 particle and freeze it in AE just to have it in the 2.5d space....)

I would like too a ETA on that plugin!!!! Can't wait!

My greatest wish (except my dream for 3D import in AE) would be that this particle system would allow for blobs. I have trouble reading the first image but it kinda looks like a blob... does it? does it??? does it Andrew? Cheers

Looking great. Will Element help in creating 3d sets for green screen applications without using 3ds Max or Cinema 4d as well as being a next level particle generating plugin? It looks great.

July 11th, 2012 @ 11:05 pm
This just made After Effects up in the ranks of Nuke. Would be great to use point clouds with camera projection for cool morphs and such like how they did the MUMMY. Imagine this plus 3D Tracking in AE CS6...our whole office got nerd b0n∑πz after we purchased.

This just changes everything. Motion blur is almost real time with a GPU setup. What normally took us about 4-6hrs of render time in C4D cut down to 30-1hr. Shading is WAY much faster and have INSTANT GRATIFICATION!

My only problem is that textures...C4D Native format when importing....materials dont really import. Textures lost and relinking is a bit of a pain. We did heed to what is mentioned about Melange...not sure if Texture Paths need to be specific directory?

Nevertheless...I'd recommend all to just give your money to Andrew...pay homage to such a release!
