Alright, so decided to record this quick tutorial on using multiple strokes to build high-impact graphics in After Effects. This relatively simple trick is a great way to make your titles pop and stand out. All of the strokes are dynamic so if you change the font or text, the graphics will update automatically. We also use the Vegas effect to add dotted lines and even Vegas lights. This is a lot of versatility in this technique so get creative!

Watch Tutorial

PS: Some might be wondering why I made this a tutorial and the Tron Title was just a short overview… well the answer is simple. Most of the techniques in the Tron project are specific to creating that one look, where as this technique is more generic and can be used in a variety of ways to create many unique graphics.

by the way...i'm form Brazil too!!!!!

    February 3rd, 2011 @ 3:43 pm
Wow, very clever, this technique does almost the same thing as the Attributes function in Illustrator.
Only applying effects to strokes in AE might get a bit RAM heavy. Still very clever.
    February 5th, 2011 @ 2:11 pm
    Very helpful for motion-graphics!

January 27th, 2011 @ 6:07 pm
Ahh, glad you did this tutorial. I've been experimenting with the stroke effect recently.
January 27th, 2011 @ 6:09 pm

Looks cool, all your title tutorials are really helpful. :D
January 27th, 2011 @ 6:15 pm
Awesome, and hey what plugin did you use to animate or create the false movement in the promo for PRO PRESETS 2 in Andree Wallins photo?
    January 28th, 2011 @ 11:01 am
"False movement"? You mean the camera shake? It's just a wiggle expression. Search the tutorials, they're used in a lot of them.
    January 28th, 2011 @ 2:15 pm
@Kai, could you give me a link, and yea i suppose the wiggle. The shaking movement to give the effect of a video, making the photo look more "realistic".
    February 2nd, 2011 @ 2:39 pm
check "111. Blast Wave" tutorial, it should show how to use the wiggle expression, if not then take a look into VC's "Basic Training" series
January 27th, 2011 @ 6:17 pm
I agree with brandon, that would be some very valuable information,

But i dont know if it was a plugin, he could have just animated the camera, or motion tracked some footage will using a null object and parent the photo to the null.

But i would like to know, was it a plugin if so what? Money is not in question here, :)
    January 27th, 2011 @ 6:21 pm
i agree, with the animating part. He could have motion tracked a video, but when i look at it again and again, i think... Could it be a plugin, i did google it but nothing came up. So how about it andrew are you gonna reply?
January 27th, 2011 @ 6:17 pm

January 27th, 2011 @ 6:19 pm
January 27th, 2011 @ 6:22 pm
Finally some other people who share my same questions! LOL

But dont rush it guys, if its a plugin, he might not tell us, it could be trade secrets. But lets hope the amazing andrew does tell us... :P
January 27th, 2011 @ 6:31 pm
WOW! Now that was a work of art INVENTION led by the Force of a master JEDI using his awesome GIZMO!!! XD

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining. When you are promised a steak and you are given a big kahuna burger you still get to eat a big kahuna burger! And it the words of SLJ, "that is one tasty burger"

Its just that I bought a baby giraffe so I could teach him the galactic orb tutorial and quite frankly what else are you going to do with a giraffe if not teach him about galactic orbs. I didn't keep the receipt so I don't think I can bring him back so I'm really nervous about that tutorial... sorry. ;)

Always appreciate all you do Senior Kramer. I am always amazed what you just give away. Thank you. From me and my giraffe Sammie Loy A.

Hey Andrew
just a little AE query. Have you got the solution for the "Return -> Rename" method? Because whenever I hit return it simply pops up a new preview box and I can't get around it. Using AE CS3, haven't changed any settings, is there a way to get it so that I can do this. And yes I am hitting return on keyboard not number pad.
Thanks heaps,
January 27th, 2011 @ 9:38 pm

I'm actually working on an 80's nostalgic painting, with Rubik's cube and breakdancer. Perfect timing. :)
January 28th, 2011 @ 4:29 am
Yo Andrew. Any chance you could make that Gizmo animate the strokes (like, apearing one at a time. And more importantly. Its possible to make those Vegas like lights to blink in the same fashion as the beautiful ones in real life ? I guess its the most logical next step to make it even better =) Tks !
January 28th, 2011 @ 6:03 am
thats fresh compare to other tutorials, apart from sci-fi or action, looks really good and awesome!

As of 2007, Las Vegas required around 5,600 megawatts of electricity on a summer day. By 2015, the number is expected to increase to 8,000 megawatts a day during the summer. So, a good guess is around 6,800 megawatts used daily for a Vegas summer day....
January 28th, 2011 @ 1:38 pm
What would the world be without cmd+d...
That idea with the radial blur for the shadow is clever. But somehow this shadows feel more like diffuse reflections to me - what is even better. I am going to research this ;)

Is anyone else having trouble with the vegas lights shaking when animated? I couldnt find a way around it so i ended up flickering the glow on the center layer of my text to give it a cool "neon light turning on" effect. I still would like to know why the vegas lights keep shifting when i animate it though.
