Mr. Time Freeze

Here are a couple awesome “time-freeze” scenes from last year that are a blast to watch! I figure they are using every trick in the book from wire-removal to 3d models and probably much more. The main idea is to shoot the scene while everyone is standing still and move the camera around them. In contrast, The Matrix bullet-time effect was shot with hundreds of cameras, all firing around the same moment.

I know the show Hero’s has some cool freeze-time effects as well as the explosion from Swordfish, do you remember some others?

Now, if you really want to be inspired check out this Mega Video!

Awesome find Andrew! Still love that fight scene done in the basket ball arena you linked about a month ago!

I am not sure, but whats about the "Deja-Vu" Explosion, is it a time freeze?

April 26th, 2010 @ 3:15 pm
For some reason i dont like the CSI vid... but the other one was made up of complete AWESOMENESS!!!!
April 26th, 2010 @ 3:17 pm
just a little thing, time freeze, does it count when you capture everyone standing still(so no digital editing etc) and just do it lets called it ''the oldschool way'' ? cus the Phillips one, it is just everyone standing still, the camera going trough and later editing some minor stuff like money, lights, glass reflections...but its not a real ''time freeze'' as we learn it here :P still awesome tho nothing to complain just wanted to point that out!
April 26th, 2010 @ 3:19 pm
Here the making of of the carousel. Found it an half year ago. Its very interesting to see:
April 26th, 2010 @ 3:21 pm

camera trick?
April 26th, 2010 @ 3:41 pm
This is something that I always want to achieve in After Effects and I know you can use Camera Projection but that is in 2D form. How can you do this in 3D form in after effects?
April 26th, 2010 @ 3:43 pm

For those who may have a smaller budget but have good modeling skills, you can try camera mapping just like the way Onesize motion did for a couple of their promos. Check out these clips. Shows a good shot breakdown too. The 3D was done using mostly Cinema 4d and 3D Studio Max.

April 26th, 2010 @ 6:14 pm
Wow, impressive. Excuse me for being an amateur, but I cannot wrap my mind around how to do this effect? Can anyone explain in further detail?
April 26th, 2010 @ 6:14 pm
Nice effects. Very David Fincher on the CSI clip. Nice 3D work.

Carousel has some great roto moments. Love that 3D explosion.

Nice examples! Thanks!
April 26th, 2010 @ 6:19 pm
I made this not too long ago.....

April 26th, 2010 @ 5:29 pm
Yeah I know " time freeze " has been made but you should do one where the angles change and pan so well
April 26th, 2010 @ 6:35 pm
Yeah I'm in the process of making something really cool that will probably have effects from video copilot. Thanks Andrew...
April 26th, 2010 @ 6:42 pm
Maybe time froze because everyone's muzzle flashes happened to go off at exactly the same time.
April 26th, 2010 @ 7:07 pm

Andrew, how about a tutorial on the opening sequence for Human Target, that is such a great opening effects comp.
April 26th, 2010 @ 8:49 pm
'Lost in Space" (redux:'98) ! They are forced into the suns gravitation pull and must find a solution or be incinerated~ They then decide to travel light speed through the satellite tearing a hole in space, avoiding certain peril. When they reach maximum velocity there is some bad`ass virtual cinematography action fo sho.
April 26th, 2010 @ 8:57 pm

I lovie this kind of scene.
I think the intro of "Hostage" is also a good example.
April 27th, 2010 @ 6:21 am
This is an ad from Sky HD, of some years ago.

It's really cool :P
April 27th, 2010 @ 6:37 am
OH MY, you really can't see the joins!

My Brain aches just thinking about how to do this.
April 27th, 2010 @ 7:18 am
There were a few great freeze scenes in The Incredibles - lol. Ok, I know it's really not on topic, but I still marvel at the realism achieved by Pixar - from the tiny but effective facial expressions to combining real world physics with the principles of animation to create believable bullets frozen in air. Ok, sorry for the tangent!

There's nothing scarier than giant man-eating piranhas and Greg Brady trying to revive his career.
April 27th, 2010 @ 8:12 am
just Amazing! great work ;)
April 27th, 2010 @ 8:46 am
I think there is a logical error in the clips. We see a lot of guns firing. We see their muzzle flashes and the bullets. But it's just a moment in time so they all have to be shot at just the same time, which is impossible. Do you agree?
April 27th, 2010 @ 8:46 am
OMG!!! how can they do such realistic work....!? It's cool!
Marton B
April 27th, 2010 @ 8:52 am
I Can't say anything.
This is the best movie that I ever seen...
Amazing, awesome, nice ...

April 27th, 2010 @ 9:24 am
Amazing effect! If ur site hadn't been there I just wouldn't have learned VFX. Hey can u tell me how to do they do the limca ad. U can google it and please tell me if its possible in ae or it needs 3d software.
I'm 12 BTW. Please check out this vid my first youtube vid. I know its not so good but its a start
April 27th, 2010 @ 10:07 am
I don't know. The Mega Video left me a bit uninspired. I didn't notice a single lense flare... Lense flares. That's what inspire me these days! When you see a good lense flare, it's like, BAM! You now own it!
April 27th, 2010 @ 11:21 am
Not exactly the same thing, but realy cool freeze effect too. Lots of awesome FX.

April 27th, 2010 @ 11:21 am
Why not some Twixtor tutorial? :)

very inspiring scenes... i remember some nice slow motions, resident evil, blade (not too nice), swordfish... The 3rd season when hiro nakamura encounter the speed girl was awesome... the light track, the papers flying around... but when she runs again the time was a lot fake... the normal people move around too fast :(...
April 27th, 2010 @ 11:25 am
freeze video ! fantazy
April 27th, 2010 @ 12:47 pm

I don’t know why my last post doesn’t show, any way, I’m trying again just to post some links about the making of the Swedish looping clown thingy, not tutorials but you might get some insight of their way of working:
Take note that they are using motion controls and Flame, or cheating if you want, compared to what Andrew does any way. Tanks and cheers Andrew /Pontus w
April 27th, 2010 @ 10:44 pm
cow! your participation was into it?, i wonder how was it done, can you make some tutorial flawless like that?
April 28th, 2010 @ 12:59 am
Yeah, wouldn't be bad to explain how to make these kind of freeze time shots and even link them together so it looks like a single smooth camera motion.
April 28th, 2010 @ 4:09 am
hi Andraw
can you pls make a tutorials with the Time Freeze
i like your way of doing this things

April 28th, 2010 @ 4:14 am
Tonight i was yhinking about time freezing or heavy slow motion and i remember Kamen Rider Kabuto (in USA Masked Rider with non-japanese actors :( )

The main power of Kabuto is the super speed, and sometimes he just kill everyone really fast but sometimes the time almost freeze, the rain stops, the sakura flowers falling from trees freeze in the air, also the traffic... things like this
April 28th, 2010 @ 4:18 am
NiC, the movie you said is "clockstoppers"... the water scene is really amazing :)

wow outstanding
May 3rd, 2010 @ 4:03 pm
Smallville Freeze Frame action on this shot was VERY original (forget that music someone reedited the video with, it really diminished the video's value a lot, but the effect can be seen clearly) The original SFX where much better!
May 3rd, 2010 @ 7:03 pm
Not sure if anyone mentioned it already but what about the opening of WATCHMEN? does that really count since there was some movement, very fluid and a nice feel though wonder how it was all put together.
May 4th, 2010 @ 10:37 am

May 5th, 2010 @ 4:42 am
Ahhh... the beauty of what we like to call in the industry "Fake-Slice!" Both Philips 'Carousel' & CSI's promo were created using fake frozen time techniques - it's basically very simple... get actors who are exceptionally good at standing still and walk through the scene with a steady-cam - motion track your footage, add some frozen visual effects in post, wire removal might be needed in some cases (people hanging in the air etc) and some awesome Optical Flares can never go a miss too! ;-)

If you want to see some 'real' frozen-time moments come and check out some of our stuff...

All the best!!

It's a Swedish company behind the 3D stuff in the first video "Magoo 3D studios". You can find out more stuff on their website. It's company from the same town where I live "Söderhamn" :)
May 20th, 2010 @ 8:00 pm
Actually I am pretty sure the Matrix scene was shot with a giant track built in a greenscreen room and then they added the outside through some process that was new at the time that let them take multiple pictures of an area and turn it into 3d space.
thats the original 3d bullet
May 23rd, 2010 @ 6:23 am
