Optical Flares Poster

We are working hard adjusting the features for our new Lens Flare plug-in called Optical Flares but I wanted to tell you about some of the cool features .  I’ve included some notes that might help you understand this plug-in better but expect a video presentation soon.  We are still shooting for a “sometime in November” release.

October 13th, 2009 @ 4:33 am

hey ..well its a cool product, but 140 bucks are too much for “only” a lens flare with some features .. even if you have written 50000 code lines but at the end i will have a lens flare plug in for after effects …i think its somehow overpriced ..

October 13th, 2009 @ 4:33 am

Heh, this reminds me of the amount of flares in Star Trek (2009)! A very similar effect.

Remix
October 13th, 2009 @ 4:35 am

@ Liess Jemai

Dude you just make a couple of boxes, invert the normals and get some textures from http://www.cgtextures.com... pretty basic… yet effective!

@ Everyone

This is gonna be friggin awesome! Personally, I love lens flares, it is my belief that “Lens flares make the world go round”. I’ve bought Red Giant’s ” Knoll Light Factory ” and by just seeing this demo… I’m starting to think they tricked me off my money… :P . Still it’s a good plug in, but does not have as many capabilities as Optical Flares does. I’m starting to thing that Video Copilot produces better plug ins that half of the plug in sites, such as Red Giant (in some areas, Particular and are two hell of a plug ins), but in Particle design, I think that Red Giant deserves an award :D .

Anyways, hope this will be cheap, coz it’s a plug in… Twitch was one great plug in out of Video Copilot. Hope you hit the waters again with another AWESOMELY COOL plug in.

Regards, Alek Angelov from Macedonia!

I’m guessing this is some thing that your very proud of, and considering the massive price difference between this plug-in and twitch (which was amazing) i take it that this is going to be an absolutely mind-blowing plug in.

October 13th, 2009 @ 4:40 am

The DVD box looks like a Final Cut Pro extention or new version! ;) Nicely done!

Andrew, did you create the entire background in 3D?

October 13th, 2009 @ 4:43 am

Reminds me of the BlackBerry/U2 Commercial… very nice work Andrew, although I did set my alarm 20 minutes early hoping for a new video blog… nothing like cereal with Andrew in the morning! Haha jk…but seriously… Maybe tomorrow. xD

The price is not that far off considering Knoll is $399. My only questions would be what are the main differences between Optical Flares, Knoll Light, and the standard AE flares. Another words what does Optical Flares have that sets it apart from the rest. I’m sure Andrew will give us a tutorial or something more (the preview looked like a winner to me) so don’t sweat it. I’m sure it will be worth it. Heck, eveything else of VC’s is that’s why I own it.

October 13th, 2009 @ 5:18 am

You sure know how to make a poster look good. ;) Did you make it with AE or 3D max?

everyone who thinks that 140 $$ for a great lens flare plug-in is too much should
1. Check out Red Giant Software’s “Knoll light factory”
and 2. stfu and be grateful that video copilot creates great and affordable plug-ins

thats all.
thanks VCP!

October 13th, 2009 @ 6:07 am

Guys, the cost reflects the 50,000 lines of code going into it. It’s a more than generous price. If you don’t like it, go shell out hundreds for Knoll Light Factory……………… that’s what i thought.

Hey Andrew!
Was the background for your poster created in AE or 3D Max. Cuz that background is Off the Screen! AWESOME!

Matt in MO.
October 13th, 2009 @ 6:22 am

Considering Knoll Light Factory Pro costs $399, I see this as a great deal.

Maybe if Andrew can differentiate what makes his plug-in different than Knoll Light Factory, then I can effectively weigh the pros and cons. I don’t want to pay less to get something that’s not as powerful. However, if it is equal to Knoll Light Factory then I see it as a huge bargain.

Please tell me
Thank you

October 13th, 2009 @ 6:33 am

Love your work but I agree with a few people that this may sound a bit expensive for a plug-in, but you have a way of showing the practicality of why people should have this plug-in so I won’t say too much more than that until we see some tutorials of it’s true power before making a verdict for myself. Good luck with the plug-in!

October 13th, 2009 @ 6:34 am

32bit FTW!!!! That’s awesome, thanks Andrew!

October 13th, 2009 @ 6:35 am

What’s the price?

October 13th, 2009 @ 6:42 am

thanks MR andrew

@Filmaker maybe the price 139 $
goood luck

October 13th, 2009 @ 6:42 am

Never mind I got the price. $140! For a plug-in for flares! You gotta be kidding me! Seriously! Come on! Twitch is also a plug-in that is $45 That is something everybody could afford for a plug-in! Andrew I love you and all but come on! Lower the price so everybody could by it! You know the old saying “The Lower The Price The More Money You Get.”

Peris Bentrer
October 13th, 2009 @ 6:52 am

Andrew you are great, but I have to tell that your products are getting more and more expensive. I think this price and action essencial it´s too much. I hope it will worth it. Sorry for telling what some people around here think.

You should be like before, great and cheap.

Bye

October 13th, 2009 @ 6:52 am

Andrew, I know your website and products are predominantly for AfterFX users, but is there any way you could make the same product for Apple Final Cut Pro Suit users, i.e. Motion.

asd?
October 13th, 2009 @ 6:54 am

honestly…
Knoll light factory has a lot of variations in shapes and numbers of flares, we’ll see what this optical flares is all about.
Other than that 149 it’s not THAT much, considering what Kramer usually offers through this website…
You should stop complaining!

October 13th, 2009 @ 7:10 am

wow! that thing is expensive! :)

Brett Perry
October 13th, 2009 @ 7:15 am

Hey you guys stop carping about the price. Videocopilot offers all there products at a reasonable price. Twitch was a steal. If you like the sight and have learned something here for free, than support the sight. It costs real money to make all of what you see happen. Remember time is money. Products like Twitch and Optical Flares can save you time in your projects for clients and give you a competitive advantage. You go Andrew!

October 13th, 2009 @ 7:20 am

The texturing on that warehouse is awesome. I always dig the way your backgrounds look, and when you explain how you do them, showing fairly simple and logical ways of creating them, well, that’s even better! ;) Made in Max right?

lens flares make everything better…. VCP makes everything epic…. this is gunna be good

October 13th, 2009 @ 7:46 am

Beautiful Poster.. Very creative. Is that price right?

October 13th, 2009 @ 7:47 am

Why are people complaining about the price? Andrew’s work is always a good investment.

October 13th, 2009 @ 7:50 am

Apart from that being an awesome product, thats a pretty sweet poster! You should do some 3D tutorials on how to make things like that…
(Also for that bar graphs one)

Drew
October 13th, 2009 @ 7:55 am

Chromatic aberations??? Wow man, that’s a pretty big word Bro! I had to look that one up:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration

As far as the price is concerned folks, and for everyone wanting to compare this to Knoll Light Factory or some other Lens Flare Plug-In, let me ask you this… mainly for those of us who sit around day in and day out “refreshing the page” to see what new “FREE” tutorial or preset Mr. Kramer has taken his time to develop, perfect, and share with us all – myself included. Is $140 really that big of a deal after all the other great things these guys offer us? Sure, you can get tutorials on some of the other sites, but many of them are showing you how to use a specific product so you will buy them. Most of what is taught here on this site is done with only After Effects (and occasionally Trapcode Particular). If I had to guess, many of us would probably not be where we are at today without some of the little “nuggets” that we get form the work of VCP…. for FREE. It’s as if no one realizes what it takes to put something like this on. A new studio, a new baby girl, staff – I would like to think Loya gets paid a “little” for enduring all the pain and suffering of stuff like getting hit by a truck, getting injected with ravenous flesh eating bugs, burned up by fireballs, and Tito getting meteors fired at him while trying to play cards. This is not some dude sitting at this desk all day in an apartment with a freakin’ sweet camera taking pictures of himself and saying “What’s up, Andrew Kramer here for Video Copilot dot net” all day long…. or wait, maybe it is??????? All of those pictures of hime with his “wife and kids” may be photo-shopped??? ;)

Besides, it’s a VCP product, of course it’s gonna be suwweeeeet!

Kael
October 13th, 2009 @ 7:58 am

Goodness, I’m pretty disappointed at how many people could complain about $140. The portions that AK has shown us already in his preview vid are incredible and immediately cinematic quality, not to mention that his products are always way cheaper than they ought to be. Consider that the VCP crew, like always, have known what they’re doing, and that the price they ask is easily going to be a mere third of what it would cost elsewhere. I’m very excited to see what this product offers, myself! Keep up the good work, Andrew!

October 13th, 2009 @ 8:02 am

very nice but it needs explain more bye thenk u

Frank Busch
October 13th, 2009 @ 8:03 am

Hey Guys,

come on… You always get the Tutorials for free. You get thousands of Tips for free. You get a lot of Jokes for free ;-)

And then you complain about 140 Bucks??? If you don´t have the money than use AE built in Lens Flares. I would buy it even for 199 Dollar ;-) So Guys cool down and save your Money for the Plugin… Cheers from Germany

October 13th, 2009 @ 8:12 am

plzzz come sooon…….

Jeremey
October 13th, 2009 @ 8:19 am

As other people have said, the price reflects comparative products, like Knoll Light Factory (which happens to be about $400). Also, this plug-in is of a higher, cinematic quality compared to Twitch. From the preview I saw, Andrew’s optical flares looked almost identical to the ones used in Star Trek and Fringe (maybe the same…?), so in my opinion the $140 is a steal! You don’t have to buy the plug-in if you don’t think it’s worth the cost, but don’t come on here and complain about it.

October 13th, 2009 @ 8:23 am

In some scenes of Star Trek (2009) I was really annoyed with the blinding off-scene optical flares. If used properly its a great look. I hope people who use this preset use it judiciously.

October 13th, 2009 @ 8:54 am

I wasn’t complaining about the price btw, I’ve purchased every product from VC, and all Well Worth It. – Just curious so I can budget for it..

can’t wait, only recently I’ve been using a lot of lens flares, but this might change my whole perspective on them, they felt so limited before, but after that preview tutorial you posted a few weeks ago, and now a release date, I can not wait. this will be my third video copilot purchase, and you guys haven’t let me down yet.

October 13th, 2009 @ 9:33 am

The price is fine for a product like this. You nubs save up your lunch money and stop whinning! :D

October 13th, 2009 @ 9:36 am

Don’t know why people are complaining about the price. It’s a product from a business that needs capital to continue operating, and knowing the history of VCP, it’ll be a very good product. Just use a VCP product for one client’s job and it pays for itself. If you don’t have client’s, go get one. All sorts of people need good videos made for them.

The REAL problem is people who don’t buy products but “share” them (a.k.a. steal), and not just VCP’s stuff, taking away money from good companies (thus requiring them to charge more). Screws everyone over.

wow, this plug-in must be pushing it hardcore for it to cost more then the 720p version of AE2.

im just kind of a skeptic on people paying 140bucks for a suped up lens flare.

but, just like every other product u released, it should be awesome(but im definitely watching the demos before thinking of a purchase)

My daily routine goes like this … I wake up and I take my laptop still in bed and I check
1. CNN
2. news.bbc.co.uk
3. videocopilot.net (Wishing additional cool stuff).

And then I go to take the morning piss and get on with my life. (May even do some breakfast) depending how late on the day we are.
Yes, that’s how much we love Andrew’s creations and I think he cannot produce them fast enough. Hey Andrew … imagine. More content, more $$$.

October 13th, 2009 @ 10:07 am

wounderful just waiting for it to come out

October 13th, 2009 @ 10:17 am

I have one thing to say about the price:

If you can;t pay for the plugin, you either don’t have clients that need this type of effect and you just want something to enhance your youtube videos or you aren’t charging enough. The type of project that would require this type of plugin should easily give you enough profit to buy the thing. Do us all a favor people and stop complaining. Pro tools should be at pro prices and this plugin is clearly a deal. This one plugin could easily differentiate you from your competitors and land you even more work, so stop complaining and either buy it or don’t.

I for one will be buying immediately upon release!

Ariel
October 13th, 2009 @ 10:19 am

It is a little bit much $140, i mean i,m a student come on.

I think i will wait till 2020 till the product is free;)

by the way, NICE Poster, nice effect form the plugin itself, and the bg is a pic i gues you took it in your garage;)

Piece out.

Damn, is it THAT good?
nah, Im just being an ass, Im sure its awesome, and I cant wait! ^_^

October 13th, 2009 @ 10:32 am

What a bargain. Auto tracking hotspots….awesome. caqn’t believe you guys are complaining about the price. You can buy every VCP product for what Knoll Light Factory costs and pretty sure this plug-in is gonna be 5 times better.

Dan
October 13th, 2009 @ 10:32 am

140 bucks isn’t a bad price for something like this. There is so much potential for this plug-in and I’m sure it will be well worth it. Though, it is kinda weird to think that a VCP plug-in is going to cost more than 720P AE2. I’ll gladly pay 140 for it when I have money.

I think too much of you guys were spoiled by AE2. :) If the product can deliver anywhere near AE2, then it’s a bargain considering some of the pricey alternatives.

Cool Bananas…140 bucks is great value.

October 13th, 2009 @ 11:13 am

Realy nice. And i see a big list of features. Now i will wait until you show us all the power of this nice plugin. And dont understand why all talking about the price. The price is ok!

Andrew, you are paving the way to the future.

Good Job.

October 13th, 2009 @ 11:28 am

Ok, for some of you 140 Dollars are much, but always keep on mind that this is really professional. You can create the look seen in so many movies before. Ans like some of you said before, just look at the prices for stuff from RED Giant. And videocopilot is so much easier to use, better looking, and think how much you always get for free at videocopilot. All the free tutorials or great Blog entries.

October 13th, 2009 @ 11:37 am

140 is cheap for a plug-in !! Red Giant Software and Boris Fx will be twice as much and they dont come with cool tutorials by Andrew K. ;)

If you can afford the Adobe Suit (3G’s) you can afford a 140 dollars for a great plug-in.

(and you can just build it to the first client you use the effect for, under Others…$ 140 )

I´m looking forward to the release.

Alright, I’ll jump in here :)

Making high-end products affordable is always our goal and it seems like many of you understand this price point, especially compared to alternatives. Now I also noticed a few people that expressed concerns so let’s talk about it. I think this website has always been about communication and being straight forward about what we do at Video Copilot.

Here’s the deal about our pricing structure for big software plug-ins like Optical Flares VS stock footage.

In a nut-shell, when we release a stock footage product like Action Essentials, we are done developing for that product, the footage can be used NOW and in the future.

However, with big software plug-ins, they require updates to be made, fixes & keeping up to date with New versions of After Effects and probably other things along the way. When we release this product, we will continue to develop and keep it up so we need ongoing contracts with our developers. The work on software never stops after it is released. Unless it is some cheap program for converting DVDs to Ipod. JK

Obviously I don’t develop plug-ins myself so we are working with some experienced programmers that have helped realized an amazing concept.

As for comparing this plug-in to Twitch… Let’s just say: we BUILT-IN a basic form of Twitch for making flickering light on the flares :)

Lens flares add a very slick quality to motion graphics and a natural finish with CG compositing so things do not look sharp and perfect, we believe this plug-in is a major leap forward and I’m confident you guys will see all the hard work and detail built-in to this tool. Until then!

October 13th, 2009 @ 11:50 am

Too expensive? Take a look around the internet at what else is available and you will change your mind.

October 13th, 2009 @ 12:09 pm

Looking nice, unfortunatly I probably wont buy this but looks awesome never the less.

The reason its $140 is because it’s a professional plugin.

You look at Trapcode Flux/Particluar etc, their $300/$400 each!

October 13th, 2009 @ 12:15 pm

I like the idea, good sample of this plug-in will be in Star Trek movie. Full of lens flares ! because on Space, they will be lots of them, everywhere your camera point.

And that is the problem with filming on Space.

jo
October 13th, 2009 @ 12:19 pm

when is “soon”?

Olivier
October 13th, 2009 @ 12:19 pm

That sounds really good!!! Hope it’ll be better than plugins we get from the net!!! XD

October 13th, 2009 @ 12:33 pm

This is great. Knoll Light Factory is also great, but it hasn’t really added new features in a VERY long time, because there was no competition; no reason to innovate.

I’ve been trying to get KLF to create proper anamorphic flares for years, and had to resort to some crazy expressions and layer masks and transform operators to get it to work. This plug-in looks to do it out of the box, which is fantastic, and an answer to my prayers.

$140? That’s absolutely outrageous! Outrageously CHEAP. $140 is nothing for an AE plugin, that’s a WONDERFUL deal. Don’t complain about that…geez.

Andrew, I will be buying this the very first day it comes out, which reminds me…will it be downloadable, or will it ship in the mail on disc? I ask because I want to play with it the moment it’s available!

October 13th, 2009 @ 12:36 pm

Thanks for giving it in november…im savying money!!1 :-D

October 13th, 2009 @ 12:39 pm

Come on ppl! 140 USD is a very good and low price point. Look at the most direct competitor, the Knoll Light Factory – 400 USD for that!

Thanks VideoCopilot – can’t wait for the release.

So long time reader first time writer, and I got to say, I have always loved this site and appriciate everything that goes on here. I’m a graduate film student struggling to pay my school bill right now and my initial reaction was definitely a gasp when I saw the price, but then after I went back to breathing normal I realized how cheap it was in comparison to other products. So….. I thought I’d throw out the idea of possibly releasing a trial version with a watermark or something so that people like me who will have to work for months to pay for something even as cheap as this can still have the joy of using this amazing plugin. Again just a thought, take it or leave it, but I for one would be filled with thanks if you did.

October 13th, 2009 @ 1:45 pm

October 13th, 2009 @ 2:21 pm

Andrew, you didn’t have to respond about the pricepoint, you have to realize that most of the people here are kids that use after effects to make kamehameha’s and hadokens come out of their hands.

October 13th, 2009 @ 2:41 pm

pretty insane…

If any of them understood the work that had to go into the bloody things they would think twice about slating this rather cheap but powerfull looking plug in.

Aleksander
October 13th, 2009 @ 3:02 pm

Okay andrew. I see your explination, but I am still wondering how this plug-in on just making lens flares in 3d space, can be that more expensive to a plug-in like twitch, which allows you to scale, boost, split, blur, tweak etc. your footage?

Aleksander
October 13th, 2009 @ 3:04 pm

And i don’t know if that is the only way of using this new plug-in, but you really haven’t shown us anything else…

October 13th, 2009 @ 3:24 pm

So, is this the plug-in you’ve been using for lens flares in product promos? Like in the Pro Scores promo?

Andrew
October 13th, 2009 @ 3:38 pm

Hi Andrew

Just wanted to give my support for the price. I think it is a bargain compared the amount of money you can spend on products like Knoll Light factory, and especially considering the support you provide for your products.

Not to mention the many other plugins such as Sapphire and Tinderbox stuff that costs a small fortune. People who buy AE plugins know this is a very good price and coupled with your excellent quality and polish you always give your products it is even better.

This is one product I will definitely be buying.

Keep up the good work!

October 13th, 2009 @ 3:45 pm

Is the building in the poster 3d? or is it a picture?

Nicolas Chapleau
October 13th, 2009 @ 4:31 pm

I think it’s Too cheap, I’ll only buy it if it’s $240 or more, with the CND dollar being so high and all ;-)

Now all I need with all these wonderful products of yours is a plugin that comes up with original ideas…I’m all out!

October 13th, 2009 @ 5:17 pm

Very nice and eye catching poster Andrew, i’ll be buying it for sure!

October 13th, 2009 @ 5:53 pm

Nice plugin. The ultimate anamorphic lens flares! I’m going to be in heaven. A tut on how you made the hangar would be amazing (time consuming too, I’m sure). Thanks again for all that you do for the AE community.

October 13th, 2009 @ 6:23 pm

Come on guys … $140 is a bargain if this plugin does what we expect it will. Lets not forget why we’re here in first place. We are here because we love Andrew’s creations and $140 VS. other or similar plug in’s is a really good deal. The truth goes like this … you get what you pay and I’m sure Andrew has gone trough this several times before setting the price. I truly believe that all Andrew’s products are very affordable and you get more bang for your buck than Guns & Ammo. I think that those who think that the price it’s too much … there is another interesting place where you might get cheaper solutions. Try http://www.acehardware.com.

Kai
October 13th, 2009 @ 6:26 pm

Looks like a great product, consider it purchased.

If you’re whining about the price: You’d probably drop $140 on a pair of shoes or jeans without thinking about it.

Video Copilot gives away hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars in free tutorials. Factor that into the price and you’re still ahead…sheesh!

Leo
October 13th, 2009 @ 7:14 pm

new bundles featuring this plug-in….? maybe?

October 13th, 2009 @ 9:00 pm

Hey andrew, will this lens flare plugin be able to affect regular lens flares or bright spots that are already on the screen. Like Magic Bullet Looks’s anamorphic lens flares?

In MB, a lens flare stripe can be set to automatically come from the highlights or the brightest parts of a scene. It would be really cool if you could make yours do that.
I know there are ways to do it, without the plugin, but it would be a pain in the but. Please reply if you can!

Well well, anyone of you can try to make a plug-in with 50.000 lines of code, then let us see at which price will you sell ))

Brian
October 13th, 2009 @ 9:30 pm

It’s not the the amount of lines of code that matters, it’s what they do that counts. With that said, I’m going to be buying this. My lens flares are going to have lens flares. I can’t wait to make an entire video of lens flares!!! Oh yeah!

October 13th, 2009 @ 10:20 pm

Hi Andrew,
First of all, the plug-in seems very promising so keep up the great work. I have one doubt though, is it possible to create lens flare plugin with built in transparency?

So I don’t have to change transform mode and the plugin interactively renders flare on a specific position of the layer. When animating I don’t have to move the layer instead I animate the flare point.

I am just wondering whether it could be possible or not.

October 13th, 2009 @ 10:05 pm

@Andrew

Well Put ;)

October 13th, 2009 @ 11:15 pm

140 dollars for that kind of a plugin is really cheap! Think of all the extra projects and happy clients you get with this tool.

Michael
October 13th, 2009 @ 11:42 pm

$140, that’s a great deal. Think of it this way, if Adobe made this plugin, the price would probably be 5 times as much as this one with half the quality. LOL Then you would have to buy their training manuals as well.

Great job ANdrew, looking forward to this release!

Mike

Looks sweet! I own Knoll Light Factory and will be buying this for the 3D functionality alone. I bet we will be seeing some more killer plugs coming from VCP in the future.
