Who doesn’t love a good disaster movie? Guilty pleasures
Here is an interesting behind the scenes look at some of the special effects for the movie 2012.

Best jobs in 2009-12 ![]()
Maya calendar.
Really nice destruction!
Greetings from the Philippines!
Gotta out-run the earthquake!
I wanted to see more of how they went about constructing the virtual landscape…
Great visual effect. Must have taken a lot of work to do that. Personally I don’t like it when they pull a “George Lucas” and make an entire CG scene, but then again they couldn’t really destroy LA. Thanks for the post!
how?
how how how how how????
Andrew..next tutorial….how to distroy an entire city?
Omg i cant wait there till this move will be released i will buy ticket in luxus as soonest posuble!!
Great!! Can’t wait either
Nice! Have to see this movie!
great fx… but why are all great fx movies of late so weak when it comes to content, story, acting…. i’ll see it anyway but only for the fx
Amazing effects, but will it just be still another catastrophy movie? How ever, I’m waiting for the tutorial for making this one in AE! =)
I think this is next generation CGI. A new era of versatility has begun in this film and it really is awesome.
Hi from Scotland…
effects look amazing
must go and see this
I think they should have gone for realism and actually destroyed a major city. LOL
I think 2012 will be nothing more than a footnote in the history books, right beside Y2K, but I will see the movie when it comes out.
it’s amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing
how they do this thing…i wish i could have a training or course with those guys….awesome…i will never get there
great VFX – wow
Amazing VFX, can’t wait to see it. I am currently working on a project that is entirely cgi, except for the actors, so it would be nice to see exactly how they accomplished this scene. Nice find Andrew!
Hell that looks awesome.
World governments should build floating sky cities to escape to when the time comes
Crazy stuff here! Can’t wait to see the movie! If only I could do this sort of stuff haha
Thanks for the post about this
I actually already watched this, but thanks anyway.
scary thing is this will really happen one day according to the book of revelation. Trust in Jesus Christ
Thanks Andrew, you do great work!
Does anyone has any idea what software does this studios use in order to make this type of movies?
I can see my house from here!
WOW! They used 3dsmax!
hey Mr kramer you do all of effects in this movie ? or this is juste trailer of your best movie ?
Sick… sick.
I didn’t know that earthquakes made the ground go all wavy!
I will see that movie for one reason, and one reason only… for the special effects.
2012 looks by far, one of the best VFX movies.
@Yakito
3Ds Max, Cebas Thinking Particles, Cebas VolumeBreaker, FumeFX, Cebas Final Render
I think you should do a tutorial on how to make that sequence. Show us how to create and destroy LA from scratch. Should only take you a few decades to record…. easy.
Can’t wait for this movie, it’s going to be great.
Ahh…looks like a movie to see purely for the effects and absolutely nothing else
Amazing vfx. But Im afraid this movie will only be good beacause of it. And not because of the story. But a must-see
hey just wondering if you realized how everyone posts kramer sent me here on every video you link us to
Was that Photoshop they were using with the pen on the touchscreen?
@Miles
Yes,it is, and after that they show 3ds Max screen.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing Andrew!
Andrew you should do your best tutorials before 2012, the Mayan calendar does not lie O.o XD
Nice effects. Too bad the plot sucks…
how?
how how how how how????
Andrew..next tutorial….how to distroy an entire city?
Does this mean Vegas could be the new oceanfront landscape?
Nice, keep posting stuff like this!
That is freaking insane! Definitely an amazing sequence to see on the big screen.
WOW… thanks AK!
Heres 5 minutes of actual footage taken from the film to lure people in
hey andrew……u should really make a tut with some advanced 3d involved…like this……or come out with a dvd training of doing this kinda professional effects…….my requests
Can´t wait to see the movie!
thanks andrew! i love seeing behind the scenes and specially VFX breakdowns
keep sharing this kind of stuff
Almost everything is CG and the next step is virtual actors.
Then the entire movie industry is ALL ours and Hollywood is dog-meat… and we’re rid of most of the coutry’s liberal wackos!
Su-weeet!
Roland Emmerich is an german guy… Like MEE!!!
WOW! It’s amazing dude, but i guess that the true challenge is when the effects are imperceptible…i speak to drama movies, where if don’t tell you, never know that there are effects.
PD: Sorry for my english, i’m chilean.
Thanks for… All!!!
hey andrew check out my website
It’s amazing how far movie technology has evolved.
roland emmerich sent me here!!!!
this is amazing stuff here i wish i was that good!
That looks awesome!
Funny thing that a Mayan Elder (ones still following the Mayan Ways) explained that it is rather a dawn of a new age, or epoch, not the end of the world.
Still gotta love fire, smoke, destruction and everything in between.
-David
Andrew is helping destroy the world.
Is there a plug-in for that?
I heard they only used windows movie maker to make that whole movie
Very cool and so much work to complete something like this … but in the end it’s all worth it.
Jarmo
And I bet Andrew is going to love 2012. May be he is going to put something together based on similar … or better for rest of us to chew.
Jarmo
The Most Amazing VFX I’ve Ever Seen!!!!!!
(Besides Andrews) lol
OH MY GOD !!!
That’s incredibly TERRIFIC !!
Man this Movie No Jokes Looks Amazing…Its next On my list…A must watch Movie
Thx AK another awesome link. This will be an awesome movie to see when it’s released. If everyone looks to some of AK’s tutorials with 3dsmax and compsiting in AE ie. “The Bullet” This can be done by creative people like us.
AK you should have a colaboration with folks on here maybe even a contest of some sort for a feature film. I’m sure many of us, like me, would be more than happy to help. You should sooooo do that.
Trailers wreck movies, haha. Just an incredible example of movie magic…
BTW who needs to be up their with the big six anyways, look at “Paranormal Activity” 25k budget smashed the box office this last week.
@JimB
worst…..movie….ever
when they r travelling from car reminds me of cruise control tutorial of serious fx n compositing “product of vc”
wow those are indeed some amazing VFX. i just hope it doesnt turn out to be another “the day after tomorrow” kind of movie. well i didnt like it anyways i dont know about any one else. still i will go see this because of the CGI if nothing else.
Nice, keep posting stuff like this!
quick fly at ground level so we can out run the earthquake…..
Ugghh… can’t imagine with the real EQ,,
Can we see with your version 2012?
wow, I will give Emmerich one thing: he certainly understands the meaning of spectacle.
No doubt this is a must see for the effects alone. But I wonder, how much man power and render time is involved for that movie compared to say transformers?
Well, it saddens me to say, but I have a feeling this movie will be a piece of poo if it wasnt for the effects..
Right now, the movies with great fx + incredible story + good actors are counted on the fingers of my right hand |-(
i noticed that they have used TWITCH plugin in the trailer + movie
Can you make a Tutorials??? Hahaa
haha Awsome.
andrew what the hell happened to your tutorial on the graphs????? pleaseee upload man its been like 4 weeks since u announced it coming in a week!!!!!!!!!!!
OooOO MAN ! END MOVIE !! WAITING FOR IT
Thank you so much Sir…
so awesome that i just wanna cry. i got so many questions and one of them is: will i ever be that good to create something similar. yeah, thats my dream to be a pro.
Andrew – i thought you was going to reveal you made the opening intro sequence to 2012!!! LOL
This gonna sound negative, but….
HOW IN HUMAN BEINGS CAN YOU STIL WALK ON SHAKING STREETS DURING A 10.5 EARTHQYAKE????
However, these are my thaughts
Seems to be a good movie further, little far fetched but looks amazing!!
That a good movie. thx you sir
Didn’t know that L.A was gone…
Well, I think this is an excuse to use only CGI for this scene…They can try really to destroy L.A. to look more real…
I am kidding.
L.A. is fine.
The effects are great, but most of the Disaster movies…are real disaster…
I’ve seen this trailer probably a year ago, they didnt even specify the release date of the movie.i was really amazed, specially when i saw the cg ocean flowing over the chineze man and so.i searched the internet for anything related to it…all i got was the reall scientific notificatin about the world being devastated by natural phenomenon in 2012. But after a very deep search…i found out that it was that shitty damn hard software maya behind almost 80% of the VFX. for the destruction, ray fire was the ultimate tool.as it’s only compatible with 3ds max at this time…that means max was used to some extent.Rolan Emmerich is just another big figure in directors list.cant wait to see the movie.thanx for the link Andrew.u can go to Mir Vadim’s official site to see how they used his tool rayfire to destroy the twin towers….its just amazing!!!!
@Dextrmania
they used the new cebas plug-in volume breaker to prebrake
the towers and thinking particles for the simulation:
http://www.finalrender.com/products/products.php?UD=10-7888-33-788&PID=60
@speedbreaker
thanx for the link. but i want you to see this also:
http://www.mirvadim.com/index.php?id=videos
looks great and hardwork.
@Dextrmania
right, I guess they used both because volume breaker was still in development as they started the fx work for the movie.
If you watch the video closely you can see the TP icon on all of the Max previews for the destruction.
Great effects, but… hope to follow a plot, even if it will reduced to a banal escape movie.
Anyway, great special effects.
@speedbreaker
Nice one chief! I had only known of Rayfire but that Cebas Thinking Particle suite is amazing, do you see how much stuff is there!
Are you still doing your destruction tests? I enjoyed them…
Yeah!
I made some cool destruction blackboxes (presets) for TP.
Perhaps I’ll upload them to the forum.
I think both rayfire and volumebreaker are excellent looking tools. but until volumebreaker is in actual production, it is difficult to weigh the pros and cons. For rayfire, they have been around for a while and we all know that it gets good results at least. for volumebreaker, it’s hardly started but has made a fantastic entrance with this upcoming movie. Only time will tell I suppose.
i love schwaben-spielberg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMNrP6ilJ9A&NR=1
amzing effects, John Cusack has still got some cool left over from ‘High Fidelity’, cannot wait for another cheese fest of stuff exploding, planes flying through fire, and probably some annoying child and a dog that refuses to die no matter how extreme it gets.
Woow!! This looks fantastic, great job man!
I’m gona try to make this one. This really looks nice.
I think that’s why I love VideoCopilot.net
thanks for dis post andrew
Hi Andrew! That is brutal. Can you make for us a little building, or landscape collaps tutorial?
“Andrew Kramer here for Video copilot .net for a new very exciting tutorial. well , today we’ll destroy LA…” it sounds great! you can do it Andrew

Andrew you´re the best!!
legen waitforit.. dary!
Hi Andrew. Can you make a tutorial of that video when Sam walking suddenly land divides into parts. You posted this video on blog, do you remember?
Thanx
Eh! that Kramer guy can do better!!!
omg that looks really breathtaking!
andrew, please teach us to destroy OUR city
Sorry… It already happened.
If you adjust the Mayan calendar to sync with the Gregorian calendar the 2012 Mayan date occured around 2006 Gregorian.
Might be something fun for the next tutorial, “HOW TU BUILD LA FROM SCRATCH AND THEN DESTROY IT” I think it would take around 40 minutes right
They did a really nice job on creating a photo realistic LA (remember like the very old computer renders, they looked like plastic)
waovvv, super and terrible!!
I want to see that movie!
who cares the lens flares are way much better
Nice. When is the tutorial coming out for this?
thanks!!! love it
thats amazing! o_o
lol! Rogier!!! hey Andrew! that’s a challenge for you right there
Wow! This will be one wicked film no dought!
Yes we have the technology to destroy LA, but do we have the budget? If you’re a major Hollywood studio you do. I’d like to see how many people worked on the actual effects and what was CGI verses real scale models. Inspirational no doubt, but not really possible without the support a studio / producer can offer.
You know Andrew…I’d like to get your opinion as to what 3D software these companies use to make these grand scale effects? What do you think?
I work at Hydraulx, one of the visual effects studios that worked on 2012 and we use Maya, I’m pretty sure most of the other houses do as well.
Andrew in you next tuts: how to distroy an entire city!!!
hehehe with reactor in 3D Max or Destruction and SilverBullet in Cinema 4D!!! heheheh ok peace out Andrew
Axel from El Salvador in central america!!!
how?
how how how how how????
Andrew..next tutorial….how to distroy an entire city?
omg that looks really breathtaking!
andrew, please teach us to destroy OUR city
Ronaldo! Brilha muito no Corinthians
Alex from Jamaica…Love those effects. Hope to see a tutorial from your site or advice us as to the type of software used to create them….
Thnx 4 sharin’ this stuff with us, Andrew!
Greetings from Argentina
what they didnt tell you is AK did this whole scene by himself, while in the shower.
Cool shots and FX. I will see this movie, but only for the FX in it…looks like the acting is typical cheesy acting…but te FX are totally awesome…..Hey Andrew, did you work on this movie too? I can’t see them doing this without you.
Nice destruction effects, I already want to learn them!!!
Congratulations From Venezuela!!
check out the film named Knowing
BAD DIRTY WORK of hudreds of people
plastic heath and sometimes You see EVERY effect they used on it
don`t waste your time for watching it
thanks Andrew ^)
this is great
… I bet Andrew secretly made this…
I Wish to Make Effects Like that!
the movie titles look like “andrew kramer style”. could it be that you are showing us some of your recent work??
Hehe, I watch every disaster film I can find, most are really bad but I watch them anyway…
man, that movie looks awesome!
I can’t wait for it to come out.
Thanks Andrew. Thank you for posting.
I think it looks great, but what i hardly can understand is, that all is made in the computer but in the end it looks like film.
EPIC! I hope that doesnt happen in my area after i graduate =P
wowee from Edmonton Alberta Canada
Wow….Its wonderful…can u post most behind scene VFX
wow amazing 3D!! thanks for the sharing AK!
what a film!!!!
owh my goodness. .
Sir Andrew are you one of them?
i mean the artists?
hahaha. .
andrew is cool fantastic , be alwause this my friend
vov.. Thanx Andrew
The Most Incredible Movie and Special Effects I Ever SEEN!!!
And they used 3Ds Max.
Looks nice! But why did they release so much footage before the movie was released?
DUDE, this earthquake is the most destructive thing i’ve ever seen. i hope it wont get real!
it should take me years to create this effect in 3ds max.
thanks for sharing andrew!
awsome movie i saw the trailer a long time back was amazed …….
Awesome visual effects, only bad thing’s the movie is actually based on a calculation-mistake. Because the Maya’s used 4 calenders (Who even does that, 4 calenders???) they made the mistake while translatinng it from Maya to GWT, so it appears the world will not be destroyed in 2012, but in 2208…
So they might as well change the title ![]()
I haven’t watched the behin-the-scene’s yet, but it looks freakin’awesome!!!!!!!
Additional note: You might start out with the 3D-city tutorial, then destroy it
Wow, seems very impressive..
Bet they use action essentials 2 aswell! xD
Yeah! It’s very nice.I hope it can show on right now.
The effects are obviously extremely complex [understatement] and pretty darn awesome, as long as you don’t take the sequence of events for that one limo driven family too seriously.
Thanks for the tease AK
this movie will be awesome indeed.
Can you give a Tutorial on this Topic? – like say any town and a wide spread destruction.
I could imagine to combine this with the “Earth Zoom” tutorial in order to fly into the scene of horrible devastation *hrhr*
Off the Record:
Andrew, WE WANT YOUR T-SHIRTS !!!!
Greetings from Germany
Wow fantastic! Can’t wait. Hope “King Andrew” can create a simple tutorial for us.
Hi Andrew! This is very cool. Can you creat your funs a building collaps tutorial? PLEASEEEEEE
Hey Andrew,
Greetings from South Africa!
Thanks for this! Looking forward to the movie once it’s released. I personally think that you have more than enough tutorials on here that teaches one to destroy everything (including the entire planet) … what would be nice is for you to run through some of the effects in these YouTube clips and giving a basic run down on how it could be done on a no-budget production.
Andew: “See that crack that forms on the road when John looks out of the window of his car? Well, that’s a crack that can be found on the Action Essentials DVD and is set to Overlay and masked with keyframes to animate the crack one bit at a time.”
Something like that. Just basic theory of how you would have done it…
Other than that, keep up the GREAT work
L
To
MAX STUDIOS
R u sure they have used 3DS MAX for the destruction of the city. I thought they used After effects. PLZ let me know
Thanks
Ibrahim
This is crazy…)
This is crazy…
Holy shit. That was awesome!
eventhough its too intense…interms of visual effects,no movie will stand infront of the autobots…2009 VFX award goes to THE FALLEN!!!who wants 2 bet!!!????
Andrew, now we’d like to ask for 5part tutorial regarding that feature.
This looks really great! Going to watch this film!!
And i want to know how to destroy things like houses in 3D max! So Andrew, please do a tutorial about this!
ArilD.
oh my god!! thats amazing Andrew … good to know it
You know Andrew…I’d like to get your opinion as to what 3D software these companies use to make these grand scale effects? What do you think?
do you realy beleve in the prediction ?
this is beautiful…love to work with you oneday….frm Ghana
Am I the only one that doesn’t want to see this movie?
I would rather go see a good story supplemented by special effects than a movie of special effects supplemented by a mediocre story.
It is an AWSOME thing !
Can you do such a thing ?! =)
a world !!! perfect moive!!
Amazing … It must took ages to render everything out . ; O
realy nice FX but why go and se tha movie just for the FX whe know allredy that it has super nice FXs!!
more imortantly is how they have done it . think om going to sit down by my computer for about a yhear and figure it out
A Tuorial would be nice. I know it takes about a week to do such a shot if you know about what you’re messing with but a simple tutorial would be also nice.
Andrew keep it up!
Davis
The funny thing is that the year 2012 was just a miscalculation, so the title of this movie doesn’t make sense anymore when they are talking about the maya-calendar.
http://science.slashdot.org/story/09/10/26/1517242/2012-a-Miscalculation-Actual-Calendar-Ends-2220
By the way, great CGI
This movies must be great, can’t wait to go and see it.
Btw witch is the biggest movie u have worked on Andrew?
meh. Not the same without Sam Loya in peril.
@slize
No kidding!
Andrew..next tutorial….how to distroy an entire city?
these effects looks so rediculously good! prob the best than any movie out there to date!! the whole entire 3d enviroments are nuts..
the only thing is its stupid there releasing it on nov 13 they should have atleast had it come out dec 12!
That’s awesome. Nov 13th release date? Ahhh, I’ll have lost interest by then.
Andrew,
You should explore the Maya’s world! What about?
Maya looks to be a great tool
Greeting from Brasil.
Amazing trailler! Question: Andrew, did they have used After Effects in this movie? Which software is used in this kind of production? After Effects is able to do that?
Greetings from Brazil.
P.S. They have distroyed the Cristo Redentor, in Rio de Janeiro. Bastards. hehehe.
Aahh… Germans. Always making everything kaputt!
Thanks Andrew! Like these links to behind the scenes. Keep posting. Thanks.
i`m a 3d artist and this is an amazing FX.
for the destruction scenes they used a lot of 3d script and a plugging called rayfire it`s an amazing destruction plugging for 3dsmax.
thank`s Andrew for sharing this with us
Hi
oh Man thats great thanx andrew for sharing thses kind of things
Thanx from ur little student
farhan
woow . this is werry good . cerfull
This is Awesome, They have used a good deal of 3Ds MAX and Photoshop… Chk out Time (1:11 and 1:13 (min:sec))
Well this is a mother of all disaster scene, I hope andrew will keep posting stuff like this, its a source of inspiration.Thanks.
WOW !!! i want the tuto ! it’s possible ?
Isn’t used AE CSx? Why?
one more vote for a city destruction tutorial!
it’s a WOW – from pg malaysian
Any one knows, what software they use for making this CG fx?!?!
woooow
wee need the tutorial ![]()
heheh
maybe i’m ambitious
That is very incredible. I wonder if they used Hovak physics in there… Oh and still 3ds max ftw!
I also wonder how long the physics calculation is going to take on my computer…
It’s incredible movie, and incredible special effects
stunning VFX,,,:-)
I wonder they also using realflow plugin on this movie…
Lots of highend VFX softwares they using nowadays, making our jobs doing easy..whew
Hey andrew,,thnx Man
I’d learn a lot from you,,,keep up the good works,,
I´m not a really huge fan of Emmerich movies (Except Stargate, that was awesome,,,). Indeed, they result the same for me, if you take a look to Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and this 2012, is the same formula, all plenty of effects and not depth into story or actors performance (that is totally ridiculous, Cusack seems the new Nicholas Cage, I hope that it won´t be a “Stay away from the fucking bike…ring, ring” on the script), well, you cannot wait so much from Emmerich and Harald Kloser, this one writer of Aliens Vs Predator…you know.
Furthermore, although the effects looks really well they are the same in all of his movies, you can see the same camera plane where people goes away running to camera and behind is something of destruction that comes to the same camera until fill all, and I´m a bit tired of it.
I love CGI, but is sad to see so good effects mixing with really bad blue/green screen inside cars, or plane crossing shoots, and overall really bad actors performance. But in the other way is cool to see what is capable 3DSMax with powerful computers. So in the other way, i still preferd other directors as Cameron or Scott that make CGI/Special Effects have sense in their movies.
Finally, Emmerich does not waste time in to convert Videogames into movies, so for this we are saved, but, ufff, Uwe Bolt in there……..
i like the fx but i don’t like it when the movie is just all about fx with no story so finger crossed
Thanks for you about giving me a very good link about making of 2012. i am very glatful to you.
VideoCopilot gotta find out about the FX, and see if they could turn it into products! That would be great!
you are a genius pleas poste a tutorial 2 show us how you managed to create this scene…..
A tutorial on that is not a bad ideal
well i saw few things about this movie, my bro was working on sequences with Dneg ( London VFX Post production Company ) a lot of work was done on shake and Nuke .. ![]()
The next one he is working on now is Ironman 2 ^^ i will tell you more about when ill have informations ( he ’s lead sequence .. )
ohh my rio de janeiro huauhahuauha ohh god not yet!

that was sick!! AWESOME!
wow.. very soon we wont even need actors!
heyyy master adrew could you make some efffects for this its because its pretty cool……to look and i love it
i soooo hope they do this movie right. an old friend of mine (who was deep into ancient mayan history) and i actually wanted to do a movie on 2012, 11:11, and the whole nine- and we even did a short 3+yrs ago, before he jetted to lala land. lol. my god. please hollywood–don’t f*@k up the church’s money on this one!! please! the effects look decent and there’s no keanu reeves on the trailer–so we see!!
videocopilot crew—keep up the good work!!
peace!
–vic
I recognise the 3DS max interface they used for the 3D.
Just wondering if they used the RayfireTool plugin or they use their own plugin
Yes, those are some very well composited believable graphics … but ..Did I really just witness John Cusack out-running an earthquake in a Lincoln town-car.. in LA traffic??? and also piloting a Cessna like plane between falling sky-scrapers? wow! Might aswell add in like 10 Chupacabras fighting big-foot dressed in drag in the back of a cab driven by Bruce Willis, to make that even MORE believable.
Is this the prequel to Kevin Costner`s “Postman” ??
Ha ha you would have to be a retarded knuckle dragging mouth-breather to even write a script involving this.
Should have never taken down that Berlin wall …seemed to have kept the world safe from those German film makers.
I am a friend from China, your work is very good
Oh-Oh! Someone will be in trouble in LA…
Wait a minute…
O.O
Anyway: Are they stealing tutorials from here?
Hey Andrew.. You think you’re up to destroying a city ALA 2012??.. It would make a great tutorial.. or three
