New Product Preview: Optical Flares

UPDATE: Product Now Available!

Mysterious things have been brewing behind the scenes at Video Copilot.
Dark things. Well actually bright things.

Drum roll please… I’m very excited to announce our new plug-in Optical Flares.  We are still very much in development but I wanted to give you a small taste of what to expect. Optical Flares is a next-generation plug-in for creating realistic lens flares and reinvent the look of digital lens flares beyond perfect geometric shapes to natural organic light.

This plug-in already has over 50,000 lines of code but I want to show you 1 small feature.

Watch Preview Video

I know there are many questions but please hold on to your questions since we will be releasing more information next month that should help clarify what this is all about. We don’t have a release date yet but it will be sometime after October, possibly November.  The price will be $139.95 but I’d rather talk about that when I show you all of the amazing features!

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:25 pm

This is going to be a very useful plugin.
Thanks so much Andrew, can’t wait!

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:27 pm

Cool..I would be keen to see how diffrent this will be than Knoll light factory. The 3d AE light integration looks really really good..If it works with 3Ds Max imported lights via Max2AE or equivilant…I’m sold!

I’m guesing the Lens flare research was gained from
Star Trek? (shining mag lights into anamorphic lenses) and replicating those into digital versions.

Congrats on the new edition to your family btw..kindest regards to you all!

Erick
September 28th, 2009 @ 5:30 pm

Amazing!
Looks awesome.

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:32 pm

Outstanding!!!! They can use it for the next Star Trek Film :)

timmy
September 28th, 2009 @ 5:36 pm

whoa! …very excite!

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:36 pm

Hey James, I’ll answer your question because it is about this 1 feature. Yes 3D lights exported from max (boomer labs) and cinema 4D will work including color and intensity!

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:36 pm

DO WANT!! thanks ahead of time, AK. I will be getting this for sure!

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:38 pm

wow, always working on something new. thank you~

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:38 pm

This looks really exciting. It was like just yesterday AE2 came out.

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:40 pm

Awesome, looks like they used that for the Star Trek film. So many lens flares in that movie, its nuts.

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:41 pm

:o AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is absolutely SUPER!!! :D

Darkrai
September 28th, 2009 @ 5:41 pm

woooooooooooooooooooooooot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However
September 28th, 2009 @ 5:42 pm

Hey andrew one question:

will it be compatible with cs3?

and is this the tutorial you told us you are going to put? or another one? thanks

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:45 pm

Cool! So these are fully 3D lens flares? Is this like Knoll Light Factory? What’s the difference?

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:45 pm

Unbeliavebly awesome. I confess that when you said you were going to create a new plugin, I wondered what else you could come up with…well, that was better than I expected.

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:46 pm

Thanks Andrew…I know I was sneeky about asking a question! – That is truly an amazing feature that opens up the integration of 3D lights in a scene.

I for one thank you for working this out…I can think of many applictions where this will be an amazing aceleration of handling light/lens effects for motion graphics and visual effects.

I look forward to this coming out!

September 28th, 2009 @ 6:03 pm

Hey Andrew,

Awesome, I can’t wait for this!!!

Mark Lee

J.J. Abrams would be proud.

September 28th, 2009 @ 6:23 pm

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant wait!!!!!!!! oh, and by the way, id buy it even if it was $1,000!

September 28th, 2009 @ 6:42 pm

Kinda reminds me of Flashforward… only the titles though. Really nice looking and cannot wait to use some elements of the Many many features you say you have lined up for us!

Gonna be as epic as AE2!

Dave B
September 28th, 2009 @ 6:47 pm

WOOOOOWW… didn’t you just have a little one? I can’t understand your work ethic how do you do this all? That is truly amazing

Myles
September 28th, 2009 @ 6:50 pm

@ MovieMaker: Knoll Light Factory has very clean perfect lense flares primarily for motion graphics. This plug-in looks like it has more imperfect, “dirty” looking flares that are suitable for visual effects as well as motion graphics.

September 28th, 2009 @ 6:52 pm

Bout time someone took this job to task! We needed some 3D lens flares.

Dark Pivot
September 28th, 2009 @ 7:12 pm

I had my doubts for this but it looks pretty good. I’ll have to look at the price though. I have to realize the difference between wants and needs :X

NickT
September 28th, 2009 @ 7:42 pm

You sound tired from the baby haha. On the flip side, this looks really cool, my initial thought was what happened to knoll light factory, but this looks very original and neat.

Lindsay
September 28th, 2009 @ 7:45 pm

That looks very cool Papa Kramer!

September 28th, 2009 @ 7:47 pm

Very cool, Andrew. I too have been studying anamorphic flare more than I care to say. :p

I know you said it was still in development, and you flares look great, but the flares in that video needed some more rounded artifacts mixed in with the square ones on the anamorphic center line.

I’m sure you already know this though. Anamorphics will produce rounded or squared artifacts, or both at the same time depending on the lens and light source.

Todd Vaziri at ILM did Star Trek’s anamorphic flares, so you might want to talk to him about it.

Looks great though so far, I will definitely be buying this product the minute it’s out.

Matthew Park
September 28th, 2009 @ 7:49 pm

Everytime Andrew Kramer plans/comes out with a new product, it’s like waiting for the next best… I don’t know use your imagination. I WANT IT!!!!!!

Mr. Kramer trying to get rich now….GO FOR ITTTT!! You deserve it. But beside that, seems like a great product. You’ll see my $150:)

Anonymous Suggester
September 28th, 2009 @ 8:04 pm

Now I’m sure you’ve got this covered (cause as you said, it was just a preview), but just in case:

I noticed that when the camera panned in, you could see the horizontal line way before the “light source” came into view.

And if you look at real lens flares, the horizontal flares are very short at first, and appear just before the light source comes in.

Now again, I’m sure you have this covered and my suggestion is a moot point; but as I said, just in case.

Keep up the good work A.C. :)

September 28th, 2009 @ 8:11 pm

Alright so I read the description and im saying to myself “Are you serious? I am not going to pay like $100 for being able to make lens flares, which i can already do!”, but then I watch your quick demo video… God dam, you know how to work a crowd. I’m sorry for ever doubting you.

September 28th, 2009 @ 8:17 pm

Andrew, I have a question on your speaker panning preset.

I’d just like to know, does that panning preset support 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound???

September 28th, 2009 @ 8:25 pm

Looks rate good!

Did you create the plugin in Pixel Blender? Or the AE API?

Dustin James
September 28th, 2009 @ 8:26 pm

It looks great… I’m anticipating new information about this as well as the release.

Have you considered a normal email newsletter? Not just the occasional newsletter to announce big releases.. but a normal monthly newsletter. (I do know that it would be much more time consuming, but just a thought.)

September 28th, 2009 @ 8:28 pm

Andrew,

Please tell me this will be a 16bit or 32 bit plug!!!
I’m sick of the little yellow sign!!!

September 28th, 2009 @ 10:17 pm

I’m with Steven, at first when I saw the price I was kind of bummed that I probably wouldn’t be able to buy VC’s latest product, but the video already sold me, and as you said I’m sure that it is just a fraction of what it can do. Now go spend time with your new family Kramer!

September 28th, 2009 @ 11:45 pm

Not fair. I was almost finshed in my plugin of this.
I wanted a knoll light factory type plugin that had features like this one and everything else it could be.

September 28th, 2009 @ 11:46 pm

Congratulations Angrew! Can’t wait until this comes out!!! One request – please finish it as soon as you can, I just CANNOT wait for this!!! :-)

And don’t listen to little low life idiots… This is a great product, people will always find something to complain about. Give someone a brand new 5 series and they will complain that it’s not the M5… Good job again, I fully support your work and products.

September 29th, 2009 @ 12:48 am

Great plug-in i can’t wait to get it.

September 29th, 2009 @ 12:56 am

OMG!!! I just saw STAR TREK movie and loved the way lens flares looked!!! This will be really nice!!!

Ori Lahav
September 29th, 2009 @ 1:03 am

Hello Andrew,
I think you have a little mistake in creating this plugin. When a you don’t see the light source, you shouldn’t see the horizontal long lines of light (don’t know how to call them…).

In this video, even if the light source goes out of the picture, these lines are still visible.

Ori.

Remind me of the 80′s in the 3D side of the prod.
I think I still have a lens flare hungover from then and probably won’t have a use for your plug.
But anyway it’s nice to see your team going the plug dev. way !

Orhan Nasufovski
September 29th, 2009 @ 1:40 am

Wow, you’re on fire!

It’s funny how you don’t think much of a plugin or a specific feature, but then must have it as soon as it is announced.

As much as I’m really excited about this product, it feels as if you’re getting into too much work.
I mean there are tons of things which were announced and never mentioned again.

Quickmatte, video blog, and the t-shirt contest are a few at the top of my head.

Still, good luck, and congratulations on the additional family member!

This is brilliant Andrew, it was always possible however it would require a massive work around. Nice job, big market for this!

September 29th, 2009 @ 4:43 am

This looks like another must-have VCP product! Well done guys.

To anyone who’s unsure about the price – Knoll Light Factory is $400, so $150 for this is very good value!

It’s so funny, I’ve been noticing your lens flares for a while, and i’ve gotten knoll light factory to look similar but it never looked quite right! Happy to hear about this. They looked great in the miniature car video you did.

Nice Flare!! when its gonna on sell? can’t wait to use it for my current project..
cheeeerrssssss

September 29th, 2009 @ 8:56 am

This plugin looks fantastic. You’re finally offering some competition to Knoll Lens Flares, which is horribly outdated.

Please Please tell me that these flares will work in 32Bit floating point. If they’re clipped to white, that’s not so hot. :)

Thanks, I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

September 29th, 2009 @ 9:07 am

Wooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww you are the best dude…..I can’t wait.
you are a great inspiration for me work.

Thanks for all.

September 29th, 2009 @ 9:13 am

Yeah, Andrew’s said hold onto your questions.
We need to see all the other features too just to see that it’s really worth it.

Although, I do agree with one person, “How is this different to some of Knoll light factory’s stuff”

September 29th, 2009 @ 9:19 am

Wow this is great, I plan on buying after effects in a few months and all you’ve done is help. I can’t wait to apply the wiggle expression to the velocity of a particle emiter!!! Its kinda funny how no one else I know understands what I mean when I say that, not even my fellow film artists.

September 29th, 2009 @ 9:39 am

Thank God! I hate using the lens flare plug-in in AE. I can finally start using lens flares that don’t make things look cheap half the time! Bought.

September 29th, 2009 @ 9:40 am

“LENSFLARE PORN” – a term I made up to describe movies like STAR TRECK and TERMINATORS.

Now we can do it on our demon face youtube videos!!
Maybe the demon face eyes can glow and become lens flares!!

Seriously great stuff. Saw the autotracking feature….looks cool. Nice to not have to keyframe the flairs they just follow the brightest part.

Actually it is awesome. Nice work.

September 29th, 2009 @ 10:50 am

Hey Andrew. Can i assume that you had something to do with the lens flares used throughout FRINGE and Star Trek? When watching both shows it is obvious that Abrahms has an affinity for the optical flare and was always curious if your company did any of the work on those.

Regarding the demo video. Maybe it’s a trick of the light, but the flares behind the text seem to remain behind the text. Shouldn’t the flare artifacts render on top of everything else even when the light source is behind the object? Also, will partially obscuring the light source on the flare correctly alter the shape of the piece that’s emmitting the flare?

September 29th, 2009 @ 12:26 pm

Andrew
I’ll pay for this.
Great as usual.
Thanks for sharing infos.

US150,00 looks expensive, let’s wait and see what else it does. It will probably be worth.

Keep the good work Andrew.

September 29th, 2009 @ 1:24 pm

Knoll Light Factory is $399.00, our plug-in will be under $150… I’ll let you guys decide :)

Hari
September 29th, 2009 @ 1:28 pm

Andrew,

This is a great plugin. What kind of video card you use for GPU rendering? Looks like it will be much more smoother to do work if you have a good graphics card. Not specifically the flare work but generally. Do you have any recommendations?

Best,
Hari

There is another consideration:
with all the free material you can find in this website $150 still aren’t enough…

Yonatan
September 29th, 2009 @ 1:53 pm

Hmm good point Andrew, Knoll L. Fact. is $399, while this will be around half that. Worth buying from what I am looking at. And this is only the surface of what it will be capable of? WOW!!! :D

September 29th, 2009 @ 2:01 pm

hey =D
this promises to be a nice product, looking forward to it!

I only got one question for you, how are you developing these plug-ins? I mean, what IDE, language, SDK etc, I can’t find info on this :S

Best, RjM

Plug-in look pretty exciting.
This flares will be really cool in motion graphics. It also will be really good in movies.I was thinkin’ about creating these kind of lens flares which I have seen in Fringe. They are awesome. Thanks Andrew.

Nice Work Great Plug-ins
Good work Andrew

I am wondering if we can importing our Lens Flare Shape which we make it in Photoshop or Illustrator to open choices to edit our own Lens Flare Look ..?!

you know some People like to draw there Elements Lens Flare and add it to AE and make some Fun

if this Plug-ins open it will be exiting and interesting …

September 30th, 2009 @ 12:43 am

Master plugin. Thank Andrew and all the staff at Videocopilot

September 30th, 2009 @ 1:02 am

Hey Andrew, ! Andrew ! Aaaandrew! Hey ! here , no left , more left more stop exactly here. Hi :D

Knoll-Light-Factory is 149$ !!!! but don’t compare your work with other’s product. We like VideoCopilot products and I think this is better than Knoll-Light-Factory.

Zvi Twersky
September 30th, 2009 @ 1:11 am

We all saw the interview with Andrew. We all know that Videocopilot moved and just grew out of its diapers. Flares were around since the old ages. One of the first effects we saw around. Optical Flares is like Videocopilot’s first steps. Can’t wait for Videocopilot to start saying it’s first words… that will probably be a particle system… The really good AE 3rd party plugins are in my opinion way over priced. I’m sure VC will eventually take over the plugin industry as their plugins are WAY cooler and more fit to our needs. This is because Andrew communicates with us and visa verse and knows what we need. Great job!

Looks promising! 150$? In VCP relatons it seems expensive, but compared to others it´s an hot deal…

Awesome :D

Will the GPU Rendering function work with SLI ?

Stefan
September 30th, 2009 @ 3:00 am

Yeah, ressurection of old good flares seen in Chriss Cunningham videos. Good idea to make it controllable.
Of course it is looking good, like confusing came from nowhere lens flare in Star Trek. Need to be shure where to place it.

September 30th, 2009 @ 3:12 am

Sweet!! I can’t wait for this!
It looks WAY better than the default lens flare in AE!

September 30th, 2009 @ 5:31 am

A few others have mentioned Knoll Light Factory, I’m also interested to see how this compares as I use it a lot for very subtle flares and blooms. I’ve had a lot of issues with KLF since upgrading to CS3 and switching to 64bit so anything that can come close (or surpass it) without crashing or being a PITA would be great…and $150?…sounds good to me.

The only thing that concerns me is that lens flares are going to be everywhere again just like the early 90′s. It amazes me that shortly after your tutorials the effects can be seen everywhere, first the blood cells, then the light streaks, then the blueprints…I’m not sure I can handle flares on every TV commercial and showreel.

September 30th, 2009 @ 5:43 am

Unbelievable, this looks great. Hey you guys can be the next Google are Microsoft of the after effects world.

Vic
September 30th, 2009 @ 6:48 am

If thats only 1% of what this plug-in can do…the f**k me this is the best plug-in ever! Congrats Videocopilot!

TommyLangzik
September 30th, 2009 @ 6:56 am

Hey Andrew;
i realize you mentioned that the product was unfinished, but i was wondering if the blocky/blotchy look of the light streaks will be ‘blendable’, to sort of soften it up. While the current effect looks pretty good, it may [obviously] not always be desired outcome. Regardless, i’m just asking because i didn’t see any control that would hint to an adjustment of that sort. Cool Plugin though.

Zvi Twersky
September 30th, 2009 @ 7:28 am

@kamal98, I think Andrew will go bigger then that… we will all stop using after effects and start using AE (Andrew Effects) ;-)

In advance forgive for my English.
Excellent work, as well as always though I work practically only in 3D.
Always amazed and during too time it was pleasant an accurate statement of a material and a constructive approach.
Thanks huge for the given information and the future connected module, though and not the free!

September 30th, 2009 @ 8:37 am

Awesome plugin! Looking forward to trying it out! I can already see how this is more robust than KLF!

I’ve already got Knoll Light factory. It is insanely awesome. So….I guess I’ll wait for the next….TUTORIAL. A new tutorial would be awesome. We’ve had so few recently….

September 30th, 2009 @ 2:13 pm

can’t wait for this!

September 30th, 2009 @ 3:10 pm

this is perfect. i want to buy it today.

i almost bought knoll light factory for the last project. but $400 just seemed pricey for an effect i may not need again. i ended up using the built in afx lens flare. that said, i have been doing a lot more 3d lens flares lately and the $150 pricepoint is a no-brainer ($100 is more of a no-brainer, but whatever).

great work. once again, you’re helping our stuff look better. awesome.

150 dollars?! thats some serious mulah for some lights?! dont get me wrong andrew i love your site and i think your one of the greatest after effect people out there but… c’mon even if its under i mean 100 dollars is too much in my opinion

September 30th, 2009 @ 5:50 pm

Well the price isn’t set yet, I just know it will be under $150 and more than $100. All I can say is that it is a major piece of software, probably 50 X more complex than TWITCH and that is no joke. And remember, you haven’t even seen the plug-in yet just 1 feature:)

Brent
September 30th, 2009 @ 6:20 pm

Awesome! This looks a lot like the flares you used in Star Trek. Amazing work.
