Filmin’ in NY

I made a last minute trip to NYC on Friday and spent today filming all over the city with a Sony EX1 for fun. Pretty cool camera and the interval (time-lapse) mode is incredible too, very easy and the results are great. When I get back on Monday, I’ll post some of the footage.

If anyone at Sony is reading, feel free to send me some free stuff :) Thanks in advance.

cant wait your the best!

look forward to seeing it! I have an EX1, an it is an amazing little camera.

your the man!

it’s 2 am there isn’t it? cant wait to see the footage

nice!

How does it shape up in comparison to the Sony Z1?

I just finished shooting a short on the EX1. Normally I can’t stand Sony Cams but I was largely impressed by the quality and how much control I had. Can’t wait to see what you’ve shot!

cant wait!

I start filming my new movie with two EX1s next week. I’ve heard great things about them, but have never used one before. I’m glad to hear that Andrew approves. Perhaps I’ll purchase some more VC products to help in this products, as they were an asset in my last production.

I look forward to the next update.

Just shot some 2fps footage with an HVX-200 all I can say is it is sweeeeeeeeeeeeet. Can’t wait to see yours. LOL you show me yours and I’ll show you mine.

Cool,”The idea” 1- filming NYC 2- blow up things
3- using AE2 4- Happy ending 5- Party :) NO monkeys
allowed Maybe one just to cause chaos LOL

THAT`s Incredible well bring it :)

Anyways as always Great job.

If someone at Sony gives you something for free, please give it to me :P
Waiting for your back

If you’re gonna hit Sony up for some equipment, make it an F23 or F35! ;)

Have you tried shooting with the Canon 5D Mark II DSLR? I was at Cine Gear Expo in Hollywood last month and they had it on a Steadycam arm. It’s shoots full 1080p.

I have seen the future and it is good. :)

Hey, do you have both cards in it? 140 minutes of full HD is very impressive.

You have the 8GB or 16GB cards?

in advance* haha i had to say something… its OCD i guess.

There’s no two ways about it, the Ex1 is the hands-down best camera under $10k on the market. No competition. i’d also say thats its the best lens on a fixed-lens camera ive ever used. Its not perfect, the menu is a nightmare to navigate, but Sony got a lot right on this one.

Its all about the sensors, 1/2″ and native 1920×1080. None of that crappy upsampling that plagues similar cameras like the HVX. Just straight up 1920 off the sensor. That said the 720p mode is really something with up to 60fps overcrank and a razor shap 720p50/720p60 shooting mode.

We use ours with A RedRock Micro and the results are outstanding.

Look forward to seeing your footage, Andrew.

Cheers

Mike

Gr8 Andrew! will wait for the footage. Looks really awesome!

Hey timinator Canon 5D Mark II DSLR is amazing, I’ve a friend Tommy Lakes (photographer) and hes letting me use it for free, Can’t afford to buy my own yet!

Looks like you got some great shots there Andrew! I’m thinking about investing in a DSLR camera here soon once I get some bucks saved up, as those cameras can do amazing things!

You can also do time lapse with water (at like 1/4 of a second shutter speed wise) and it makes the water look fuzzy and has an awesome effect, (you see it everywhere in art today)

Other time lapses I’ve done with my SLR (not digital) is with the sky at night. If you point the lens at the north-star then put the camera on BULB and let is sit for maybe 6 hours over night, you’ll get a really interesting effect!

I’ve also done time lapse with just light in general, like putting the camera on BULB then using a laser pointer to right things on the wall. You can even point a flashlight at certain objects in a room while on BULB for just split second each object then release the shutter and you get even cooler effects!

Well, I don’t know why I went on a whole rant about time-lapse stuff, I’m sure you know WAY more than I do about all this photography stuff (i’m only 17, LOL)

Keep up the awesome work Andrew! Look forward to see your results ;D

am waiting for your new touches

Yes it’s true , the EX are very powerful, just try the EX3 at 60 FPS mode it’s just AMAZING TOO !!!

Have the EX 1 with the Letus Extreme, and can totally agree: den variable framerates are awesome. It was never easier to do over or undercranking with a camera at this price range.

Just love it to go out and film stuff, no matter if it is day or night.

fun, I’m going to buy a new camera too in a view years, maybe this is something.

Cool!

Check out my action essentials 2 test! :

AHHH, your so lucky I’d kill to shoot with one of those.

Never thought about it before, where do you live? :D

Good day to you Mr. Kramer. Your tutorials, and products appear to be the top of the line, I own the cs4 series and look forward to doing business with you, lots.
In fact, your help in the community is so generous that with your permission, I would like to add your site in my links area…no strings attatched, I just want to give you something for free for a change.
Oh, one question…I am a well known musician..which product of yours would you suggest me getting first?
I need to make sure that all my tracks are flawless before sending in the master for mass production.
thank you for your time,
Donald Rucker

*looks up price to a sony ex1

For.. sth like? Donating the youth filmmakers? xD

In American cinematographer there is mention of the EX1 being used in “public Enemies” for some car interior shots as well as “D” camera on some action sequences.

Hi

can’t wait to see the NY footage and good luck…

From DR

Ohhh, i like this kind of time lapse effect. Dont try this effect in AE until yet. Hope you can explain a little in that technic.

Anyway… :-)

Know a couple of guys who have an EX-1 and pair it with the Letus Extreme. They’ve gotten some awesome footage with that li’l thing.

Oh, BTW, my Action Essentials 2k is coming in this week. Thanks for making that sample pack available, and for all of the hard work you’ve put into getting the DVD problems fixed. You rock!

Sounds cool. by the way, my favorite band released a teaser for their new album, I think it might go well with your footage

AWESOME!!! I can’t wait to see what you captured. Got Spidey?

Oh man! I miss NY.

XDCAM is awesome!

Did a shoot with the Sony PDWF800 (XDCAM HD422) a few weeks ago, and was totally amazed at the image quality.

Article about F23′S and EX-1 used on “public Enemies”:

I recently used a EX-3 for “B” camera on a viper shoot, held up very well and intercut perfectly.

cool stuff andrew!

has anyone ever sent you free stuff coz i have seen you say that a couple of times?

Dan Allen

thanks from nicaragua, your work is spectacular

by Adrian Best

This is great, cant wait to see it. I have been following from tutorial one…I have a lot of productions inspired by Andrew Kramer,

EX-1 is amazing. Works great with Adobe.

by LovingApathy

Hey Andrew!

You should take a post the picture profile settings that you used for the EX-1.
I have the EX-1 and the camera is very customizable and the output can be as unique as the camera operator! :]

Can’t wait to see what you’ve got!

Joshua

It will be like Christmas morning.

Fantastic Shoot, nice blurriness. Congrats

nice shot i try to make script working with exposer like ur shot

Is there any way to do simialr footage with AE ?

Hey AK! This stuff looks really interesting… As a token of my appreciation I’d like to offer up my walkman? It has a habit of chewing up tapes and the sound quality is terrible, but I’d like you to have it all the same.

Many Thanks

Lawrence

Cool, I like Sony’s EX series there pretty good cameras [I always think of them as what the Z1’s should have been, and the rightful heir to the PD-1's].

Just wait until you try and use your EX1 footage in Premiere CS4.

Maybe it’s me, but I’ve had to switch back to Premiere CS3 because of many unacceptable bugs in CS4 dealing with the footage.

Gr8 move Andrew! You are the BOMB!! You are an inspiration to a whole lot of us here in far away Nigeria…Africa! We love you and you deserve an award for puting smiles on the faces of creative people all over the world!
hey andy, could you post a list of some corporate or studio jobs you have done?

Thanks bro!

Interval Record Function is very nice indeed, one of the reasons i once bought my DCR-HC90E (yeye, high-grade professional equipment). :)
Also thinking about investing into a Z5E (European Version), I think it´s very good and i just love tapes!

Would have like to see Mr. Loya disappearing in the lights… However, I think your camera work is incredible. Great and entertaining view of NYC.

hi andrew, your shots at night are very impressive. i also have an EX1. what kind of picture profile, shutter and resolution did you use to get that clear footage? in some of my experiments all i got was a noisy picture. looking forward for a short answer, thank you in advance. steve

keep up the good work dude….

Great work Andrew. I always w8ing for ur cool new exciting tutorials. I really learn a lot from you even every thing in
CG effects and many amazing trciks.
I have ur few products like Riot Gears and Action Essential.
I always use your twitch plugin in my every project for coloring and lighting and thanks for every thing dude.

hey Andrew,

How did you capture ur ex-1 footage? A friend of mine told this could only be done in Final Cut Pro using xd-cam transfer.

You do it in premiere?

Hi Andrew, I am at Sony and I am reading…I will send you some free pogs if you want. I really appreciate all your tutorials. And I still have my pogs.

Can`t wait! ;)

I can’t wait for the Red Scarlet :D

Hi Andrew, I really want that camera, but I really don’t want to spend 6 thousand dollars. Is it worth the money? I’m a inde filmmaker, looking for a good (low costing) HD camera that can produces high quality video. I love your work, and please keep this website going forever, it makes my day when I see a new blog or tutorial.

COOL~
