patrick
June 29th, 2009 @ 2:36 am

i watched all the new video examples…. some of the elements look a bit “videoish”. mostly the fire. i’m thinking it might be due to the shutter speed they were shot at.. or it could just need some more bluring and colour corection…

can we get some specs on all the clips

fps
shutter angle/speed
original rez (4k/3k/2k)

i’m definetly buying the kit though coz it is f-ing awesome!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

i just think it’s important for us to know the specs!!

thanks.

thanks andrew!
ur the best!!

btw.. ur new web site design looks the best!!

June 29th, 2009 @ 2:53 am

Patrick, the elements were shot at 2k, 3k and 4k. We also shot at 24fps up to 120fps. Variable shutter speeds as well. We mixed it up to give more options to match your shot during post.

Not sure what you mean by “videoish”, after all you are watching a screen capture of a video thumbnail :)

The teaser video is the best example of what the elements look like playing back at real-time, until the final promo goes online.

June 29th, 2009 @ 5:38 am

me again! :)

So i’m one of those people with a super keen eye for these things. so even though it’s a tiny low rez screen grab i can tell… I don’t know what it is but my mind just rejects anything NOT shot with a 180degree shutter. It’s just the motion circadiance..
So 1/120th of a sec at 60fps, 1/48th at 24fps etc .

Anything shot with a higher shutter speed than the 180degree equivalent looks “videoish” or “sped up” even though it’s playing in real time. And it’s most noticeable on the fire elements…. So that’s why i want a list of what shutter/fps was used for each clip.

Is there a way to add more motion blur to an element in AE if i think the shutter looks too high?? Maybe slightly off setting two layers by 1 frame and blending them?? what do you think?

Also i would love to know what clips originated in 2k, 3k or 4k on the RED. Mainly coz the 2k mode is noted for resolving a real world resolution of slightly over 720p. I know it’s the best we can get with current tech. But it’d be nice to know the elements we’re actually gonna be able to see a difference on with the 2k DVD.

if you didn’t write down the shutter for each shot or lost the meta data that’s cool. i’ll just have to go by eye :) or maybe they’re all in 180degree shutter:)

Cool. Thanks!

Andrew, I’ve email support twice in the past 2 days trying to change my order. I ordered the 720p version and I want to upgrade that to the 2k Instead and Just pay the difference. $150 I’ve already been charged for the 720p, thats what my Bank account says anyway. I would much rather have the 2k since I work with 1080p footage anyway. Please have someone address this issue.

Thanks,

June 29th, 2009 @ 8:40 am

@Patrick
I know what you mean with videoish, it’s because of missing motion blur!
But now think about it, let’s say you had to comp one of the elements with footage that is shoot with a high shutter-speed! It would be very hard! Adding motion blur in post is easy, but removing motion blur is close to impossible.

Derrick van Niekerk
June 29th, 2009 @ 8:42 am

patrick
June 29th, 2009 @ 8:59 am

speedbreaker! and andrew!

how could we add more motion blur to a fire element?

here are some i’ve thought of… don’t know how well they’ll work/look

slow it down slighlty and use frame blending.
have one layer 1 frame out of sync and blend it with the original.
maybe twixtor has something???

any thoughts?

June 29th, 2009 @ 9:03 am

Hey Patrick,
If you post this question on the forum it will be easier to discuss. There are tools for this including AE’s built in time-warp and revision fx smart motion blur. I’ll look for your topic.

Speedbreaker
June 29th, 2009 @ 9:15 am

@Patrick
Try ReelSmart MotionBlur, it’s awesome!
It’s pobably the most used plug-in for adding motion blur.
I tend to shoot all my footage with a high shutter-speed, especially if you want to comp in cg elements later, it really helps to sell a shoot if you have the same amount of mb on all elements.

June 29th, 2009 @ 9:26 am

Will the new video blog be iPhone friendly? (aka… “no flash”?)

June 29th, 2009 @ 10:00 am

Action Essentials 2 will not be part of any of the bundles since we have 2 versions. We are working on a system to make bundles more interactive and customizable and this is something that will happen later this year.

Bestia, I’ve sent you an email to troubleshoot.

Hey Andrew, I know you’ve already mentioned that AE2 may be included in the ultimate bundle. I was wondering if your still planning on doing that, and when. I don’t want to purchase AE2 and get the ultimate bundle in a few weeks and find out the AE2 is included. If you could respond that would be great, so I know if I should go ahead and order AE2 now. Hey, Andrew, you’ve practically led me by hand and taught me the much I know about AE and 3d. My problem has always remained that you do not ship to Africa. I live in Nigeria and don’t plan on leaving for anywhere until, maybe, early next year. I can’t wait that long to get my hands on your whole products. I’ve written earlier on this issue. Hi Andrew!

I just watched you gallery demo of Action Essentials 2, and I LOVED it! Lots of cool stuff! The only thing I wanted to mention that I DIDN’T like are the shells… There should be a dent left by the firing-pin, otherwise they just look like someone has forced the bullet out with pliers or something. But I guess that’s just my opinion…

Can’t wait to get my hands on a sweet AE2-box!! :)

June 29th, 2009 @ 4:43 pm

you should change the name to video pilot now, it’s so big and awesome.

Hey Andrew i was just wondering could you do a couple of tutorials for AE2 like compositing muzzle flashes and making explosions “fit the scene” i know how to do both of these but some times my videos dont look right. thanks anyways!

June 30th, 2009 @ 5:30 am

Hey Andrew,

I’ve got a question about editing the explosions into the footage. In the Demo you did, the explosion was BEHIND the bus, how did you do that?

Thank!

June 30th, 2009 @ 5:42 am

AWESOME! Keep it up Andrew! :)

June 30th, 2009 @ 7:11 am

Trent – it’s a technique called “Rotoscoping” where you manually “cut” (or path) around “object A” to make “object B” look like it’s behind “object A.” Hope that was straight forward

Adam
June 30th, 2009 @ 7:36 am

Trent.G

he did it by rotoscoping the bus. you duplicate the footage then draw a mask around the bus and move it to the front. the same method is used in several of his tutorials

I saw the trailer for Action Essentials without a blood splatter black background. Essentials in Action is also true or a transparent background?
PS:
Sorry for bad English

Just out of curiosity. Is your “Studio” in your house, or at some actuall building you own or what? Or do you have an elevator in you shed outback that goes underground to your dual Pentium 3?

June 30th, 2009 @ 1:58 pm

thenkx Andrew you the one and beste of the best

June 30th, 2009 @ 2:01 pm

hi Andrew if you cun make a tutorial obout the man torshe like (4 fantastic ) thenk you sow much

Phil
June 30th, 2009 @ 3:19 pm

Hey,
What happened to the first Action Essentials? The first one is rubbish compared to Action Essentials 2 but I was just wondering if you combined them or just scrapped the first one.
Just one more thing…I ordered the 720p version on Monday 29th and I live in England and I was just wondering approximately how long will it take to arrive after being shipped.

Thanks!

Phil
June 30th, 2009 @ 3:31 pm

Nevermind. I went to the AE2 page and I actually scrolled all the way to the bottom and saw the answer to my question lol.

June 30th, 2009 @ 3:56 pm

Hey Andrew.
I really want too see how you can combine the elemnts in a real movie.
I remember few weeks ago you posted some frames from the AE2 promo, with Sam and some new actors.
you gonna post this short movie?
thx a head.

Whoop Whoop Whoop

Looks good man. Andrew I just want to say, although the 2k vs. 720 debate has been done to death I think you are providing a much wanted resource for serious filmmakers. Sure not everyone needs 2K when they export to a 4:3 home video stream but since this product is shaping up to be of pretty professional quality, someone with something higher concept and production values in mind will get much more mileage with this.

Keep up the goodies, am looking forward to more tutorials and stock elements in the future

June 30th, 2009 @ 6:11 pm

waiting for the promo trailer is like am waiting for modern warfare 2 its eating me alive ,i wish i have a time machine.

blake
June 30th, 2009 @ 8:06 pm

This might be a stupid question but andrew it would be great if you could put up like a sample pack that only has like three elements. Just so we can get a taste of it and test it out. I doubt you would do that but its worth a shot. I really need some effects like these but demolition films quality sucks and i dont know of any other stock footage sites. plus i just a teen with no money. i mean i could get it but everything of mine had to break (camera and computer) so i had to get new ones. i dont know but it would be nice if you could do that. Once again doubt youll do it. lol lookin forward to some new stuff.

However
June 30th, 2009 @ 9:24 pm

Does the 2K Version also include the 720 Version? Thanks

Matt
June 30th, 2009 @ 10:51 pm

I am so pumped to walk up to my door or hear my doorbell ring and see ACtions Essentials 2. YAAAAAAAAAAAA

BT
July 1st, 2009 @ 1:03 am

@However: No, just import the 2K into a 720p comp and scale them down.

Nikolaus
July 1st, 2009 @ 2:54 am

No Teaser online :-(

July 1st, 2009 @ 3:01 am

Sometime today it should be up. We’ll keep you posted.

However
July 1st, 2009 @ 3:09 am

@BT: thanks i know but the problem is they still have the quality in them as the 2k so it would take the same time to render the 720 p comp or 2k comp.

I have to seperately render them before use. With an alpha channel too!

Lotsa work but i mean cmon, its still a crazy deal

July 1st, 2009 @ 3:12 am

It’s not a LOT of work but we also included a project file that is already setup with the output module and the render queue. Just hit render. Check the FAQ on the product page.

However
July 1st, 2009 @ 3:16 am

oh yah..i forgot u already told me about the project file thing. ok so thats good but andrew one question while you still awake…how long would it take to render out a 2k explosion thats like 10 seconds long with an alpha channel?

Jeff
July 1st, 2009 @ 3:18 am

You lost me on that one.
so much fuss for months for ending with a mere hour of tutorials.
Twitch and the bullet had hours of great stuff for half.
I’m missing the time when it came by surprise.
The expectation killed it, and I don’t need smoke and fireworks, just knowledge.
Still congrats for the J.J thing, waiting for the next.

July 1st, 2009 @ 3:35 am

Oh Jeff :)
Trust me, this is our biggest most in-depth collection to date. Twitch is a Plug-in, The Bullet IS a training DVD, this is a stock footage collection. The tutorials are mainly to get you started but include advanced topics. To give you an idea, Evolution has about 175 elements… this has 500! Whether you do Motion Graphics or Visual Effects, this collection is a game-changer.

However
July 1st, 2009 @ 3:38 am

AND this has some tutorials too!!! :D

However
July 1st, 2009 @ 3:43 am

I remember when you had a little tutorial about an explosion over a city..of course you deleted that one because obviously you are WAY better now, but again i think that would be crazy!

OH YEAH! behind the scenes of when you guys were shooting the fires and stuff lol awesome

Kevin
July 1st, 2009 @ 3:45 am

Andrew

Are there any tutorials about the above showed title designs on the DVD? If so which ones?

Zizo
July 1st, 2009 @ 3:51 am

AND behind the scenes too!!! :D

July 1st, 2009 @ 4:12 am

Hey Kevin, There are no motion graphics tutorials on the discs but I was actually going to make a few free tutorials with all 4 of those designs. They are very quick to make…

bANKS
July 1st, 2009 @ 4:36 am

For the 2k version, is it 32 GB per disc, or total?

July 1st, 2009 @ 4:42 am

banks: 32GB total. it’s (roughly) 8GB per disc (4 dual layer discs).

Kevin
July 1st, 2009 @ 5:02 am

Kicka$$ Andrew!! This collection looks awesome, and the price is incredible. I am hoping to grab a copy of this from you this month. The 2K would be great, but may have to ‘settle’, lol, for the 720. Either way, this is fantastic looking. cant wait to get my hands on it. Congrats on another superb product.
