Wired with J.J. Abrams!

J.J. Abrams ‘took’ over Wired magazine as a guest editor this month and injected some of his inspiring philosophy and clever wit.   It’s a fun read if you get a chance to check it out.

Now if you look hard enough, he even mentions Video Copilot as something he wishes was around when he was younger. Read that part. Needless to say, it was pretty freaking cool to see this in a magazine. Definitely put a big smile on my face.

What’s more awesome, was actually working with him on the Main Credits for the new Star Trek movie! It was an honor to collaborate with J.J. again and I can’t wait to see the movie on the big screen! I hope you guys will be there too.

Hey man I saw that you made the fringe intro. Is there any way that I could get some instructions on how to do it. That intro is my favorite and I have been trying to figure out how it was done.

Hi Andrew,

so I had to read you made the Title-Animation for Star Trak and Fringe (the series just started down here on TV).

I would be very interested seeing what else you are doing for professional movies and stuff.
I understand if you don’t wanna make any advertise for yourself or make it a big thing, but I’m just interested.

Regards,
Lucas

That’s so funny. I remember seeing the opening titles to “Fringe” and thinking “Wow, whoever did that sequence is freaking talented and unreal.” I had no idea it was the guy practically in my backyard. Kudos to you, Andrew. You never cease to amaze me.

Now I’m REALLY looking forward to Star Trek!

Cheers,

April 23rd, 2009 @ 1:48 am

Yeah Andrew, we are all very proud of you and now we can go around saying stuff like “The guy who did the opening titles for Fringe and Star Trek etc is actually my AE and 3DMax tutor” people might not believe us but hey we know we not lying… We are all really proud of you dude and the rest of the team …. and Im glad I came across Video Copilot when I did… you guys rock the boat!

Video Copilot Forever!

Jimmy
April 23rd, 2009 @ 2:09 am

Oh My god, I actually said to my girlfriend when we first saw the trailer “That looks just like something that tutorial guy i watch on the internet would make” she suitably responded “oh thats nice….”, but seriously, you seem to be able to leave a subtle “kramer stamp” on your work, can’t quite put my finger on it, but theres defiantly “kramerish” to the work you produce. *High five* and much love!

Codemonkey123
April 23rd, 2009 @ 2:36 am

Awesome Mr Kramer. I would have gladly killed Sam to get a shot at working on the Star Trek project. Now when I see the movie I will be looking for your genius at work. Congrats

April 23rd, 2009 @ 2:58 am

YOU DID IT! :)

Question: At which format did you work for the titles? 4k? 2k? How did you manage the huge amount of data in AE? I have always to deal with memory issues when working with such dimensions.

Great thing, now M. CA is my personal place of pilgrimage :D

Energized
April 23rd, 2009 @ 3:04 am

I agree with Jimmy, we have all watched and learnt and re-watched your work, when I saw the trailer I turned to my mate and said “I recognise those lens flares!!” Honestly I think your stuff is always fresh and exciting, ‘cos you give it what Stu Maschwitz calls the “Kiss of Love”…I think thats what he calls it anyhows… the pure magic!

Humility is a fabulous trait to posess…and you, Andrew, have it in the utmost! Your talents in the visual and training arenas are to be greatly commended and I encourage you to keep it up. I watch every tutorial you make, purchase your stuff, and read all of your posts because they are GOOD! But what astounds me, every time it occurs, is when someone gives you a shout-out on a grand stage like “Wired,” you react in such a humble way like, “it was pretty freaking cool…” as if you had never been recognized in this way before. You do what you love, you make others love it, and that is why I will keep supporting you! Thanks for being real, and thanks for EVERYTHING you offer to the world. And pass that onto your offspring, too!

April 23rd, 2009 @ 7:27 am

Can’t wait to see it myself. But they got Cap. Kirk all wrong. Dispite what they show in the trailers, he can’t drive stick. If you watch the original episode “A Piece Of The Action” Kirk with Spock try to drive a car to the “Boss’s” house and have a very hard time because it is a stick.

Anyway, Looking forward to the main credits. You should use that as a tutorial. Where you using 3D or AE? Or a mix of both? ;)

April 23rd, 2009 @ 7:33 am

I had to read that bit in Wired a few times before I believed it! I’m so happy for you and I don’t even know you, but it must have been quite the thrill. I’ll be thinking of VCP on May 7th!!! Just think, you’re a part of Trek history now!!!!!!!

April 23rd, 2009 @ 7:45 am

Gratulations there, that’s really cool!
I’m excited to seeing J.J. Abrams’ and your work on the big screen! :)

Very nice. This could be your way in into the big ones. Same here, but with stunts then. It was hard to get into the big movie business but once you’re in, you’re really in. And J.J. ain’t a small one. We got a chance by one of the biggest movie directors here in Belgium (even tho it’s a small country :p) and since then we have a lot of work. We never made any publicity and we’re in the movie business now for about 10 years. If you do your job well, their mouths do the rest. Congrats man. The future looks very bright for you.

April 25th, 2009 @ 10:36 pm

hey andrew,

long time viewer, first time poster. just wanted to say thanks for all the tutorials and awesome tips. this is definitely the most helpful website i have ever come across since i’ve gained an interest in video production and visual effects.

i was at a cincinnati reds game last night, and i thought you would like to know that the video that plays on the brand new, ten million dollar, HD, ginormatron that introduces some of the hometown players makes great use of the futuristic HUD tutorial. i looked up at the sixty foot screen and said, ‘hey, i know how to do that!’

thanks again,
dan

April 25th, 2009 @ 11:28 pm

As a trekker.. I just can’t wait for this movie. Now I have other reason for that: I’ll see Kramer’s good work :)

April 26th, 2009 @ 11:34 pm

Andrew,

Got to see the movie last night at the Paris premiere.

Can’t say that I did not see some AK touch in the credits and when reading your blog this morning I was like ‘I knew there was something about it!”.

Anyway I definitely can feel the vibe in this new generation of artists that you and Abrams are part of.

And I can’t hope for anything but more projects like this one in which truly amazing talented people are given a chance to collaborate together to bring us amazing movies to the big screen.

Congrats again and let’s bring this new AE/smart eye director generation to make more movies like this one!

Hey all!
I just watched Star Trek on screening for journalists here in Croatia. It was awesome.I won’t give any spoilers, I’ll just say that it was funny and you grow to love the characters quickly. And yes the end titles scream Andrew Cramer. We who know him and his style will immediately recognize his work.
Bravo Andrew!

Congratulations, man!
