The Bullet is Really Moving!

We are almost wrapped on this new DVD and we are quite proud of it

This new DVD will take you from your favorite 3D program to After Effects and back, including compositing multi-pass renders and importing camera data.

On the AE side we will be covering advanced compositing techniques including color correction, particle effects and 3d displacement mapping. Most of all we will be covering workflow management and exploring the best ways to manage assets and media. No more, saving everything to the desktop.

The official information about the product and promo video will be around later this week, we spent all our time on the product so that’s why the promo isn’t out yet.

Hey Andrew,
This is the first time I've posted on your blog. I've been following your tutorials for a long time, and I have to say thanks so much for giving us real world examples to learn from. your bullet DVD couldn't come out at a better time as I have been working on a micro budget film for the last year and the one high value production shot we wanted to put in the film is the bullet shot plus incorporate the medical zoom tutorials and have the camera follow the bullet through our character. you can check out the project at I was the director of photography, editor and vis effects artist. Note the gunshot in the desert. The slideback on the gun is from your tutorials as well. Thanks again. I look forward to purchasing your Bullet DVD and putting it immediately to good use.
May 11th, 2008 @ 11:36 am

May 11th, 2008 @ 12:12 pm
you know andrew you should take the next step into the buisness world of this site. you can get sponsers to advertise on this site an it could be a lucrative opportunity.
May 11th, 2008 @ 12:16 pm
I appreciate the Cinema 4D side of this. I'm still a Combustion/Motion user on the compositing side but have adapted your trainings in my workflow. Thanks for the C4D stuff. It's a great application.

I'm interested in this product, the training DVD special edition, and Twitch. Will there be a bundle to buy all 3 on DVD. I know twitch is a Dl only and I am fine with that but I'd like to buy the 3 in bulk to save some cash. I am moving to California this summer so I need every penny.

Also bought the canon HV-20 on your suggestion through a Q&A section you had here. Overall for the price it's great and I often get asked what HD camera did I rent for shots filmed on the HV-20.
May 11th, 2008 @ 1:27 pm
Looks awsome ! Where's that pre-order button ? :)

Great Work, amazing product and something tell me we may expect some *BONUS* inside :)

Be sure I am going to buy this one.

May 11th, 2008 @ 3:04 pm
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay! looks awesome andrew!
May 11th, 2008 @ 3:16 pm
What really has me excited about this product is that (and I'm speculating here, but hopefully!!) we'll get a complete overview of a complicated special effects shot from planning, shooting and compositing to final rendering. Usually this process goes through multiple roles and, in some cases depending on scale, different companies (effects or otherwise), so to have the opportunity to learn this process is invaluable. I see this as the ultimate tutorial.
May 11th, 2008 @ 3:32 pm
Does any one know where to get movie trailer sound FX. Sorry Andrew Your designer sound fx pack as absolutely bitchin. I'm also looking for that holy back ground music you know the kind that sounds like its from a Catholic Church viewing a end of the world demo.
May 11th, 2008 @ 4:07 pm
The orchestra sounds are part of the sound track, you want to search for soundtracks, not sound fx.

Hey Andrew - is there any 3D camera tracking involved (i.e. Matchmoving)? I'm super-pumped about the 3D integration. That's what I'm working on right now. Thanks.
May 11th, 2008 @ 11:44 pm
No 3D tracking in this one, but that's what makes it so valuable. You don't need 3D tracking software to create this effect.
Josh Johnson
May 11th, 2008 @ 11:53 pm
Could we expect a 3d tracking/matchmoving tutorial or DVD in the future?

Thanks Andrew!
May 12th, 2008 @ 12:26 am
Don't you like MAYA?
May 12th, 2008 @ 12:31 am
@ AK & Kevin Balllon

Yes I was wondering when the anniversary is, cheers for letting us know. Thanks for the great site Kramer. I will be buying the DVD version of `the bullet` first week of June. I just hope there are some Sam signed versions still available. Or has he turned into a `diva` with a long list of demands before each shoot now?

Few questions before I gather money to buy...
I have Cinema 4D and 3DS Max,(can get blender), which is the most easiest to pull this effect off?
If we buy to download will we still get the signed paper from Sam :)? lol
I take it your exporting camera angles to pull off this effect? (hopefully)
May 12th, 2008 @ 10:16 am
That's What we like
Thanks again ( andrew and your Team )
May 12th, 2008 @ 11:56 am
Pre-order? Please? =)
Can't wait.

Also, for the download...if any one on the VC team knows, how big is it? And what speeds can I expect (up to 500kbps or less?) so I can estimate a time for download.
May 12th, 2008 @ 12:46 pm
WOw I love it andrew. Cant wait till it release. Very descent price also. Worth of buying it, I can see it now.
May 12th, 2008 @ 2:17 pm
Hey Andrew...what kind of microphone do you use when making your tutorials? And , on your regular full length tutorials, about how big are the file sizes for those screen cap recordings you do after conversion for the web?
Jason Baker
May 12th, 2008 @ 2:19 pm

why no maya tutorials?
May 12th, 2008 @ 2:24 pm
Now for my comments on this awesome tutorial. I love it, I love it, I love it. Hey but I thought there were to be at least 3 or 4 tutorials on the dvd. Will those be coming out later.
I hope you all are planning to release a bunch of the the deep 2 hour tutorials.
May 12th, 2008 @ 2:51 pm
There are 12 tutorials on this DVD that take you through the different stages of this compositing. Now if you count all three programs there are actually 19 tutorials.

How it works is this first several tutorials are in After Effects, then you choose which 3D program to continue with, then each 3D program is integrated in After Effects for finishing and compositing. If you count the training for all three 3D programs the total length is near 5 hours but around 3 hours for a single 3D program with AE.
May 12th, 2008 @ 2:56 pm
Awsome dvd Andrew, I LOVE it
Frank Miller
May 12th, 2008 @ 3:08 pm
I hope you will make more tutorials, like this, based on effects from popular movies because you can't find techniques of incredible effects on the internet and they (meaning Studios) don't put any secrets of the movies with the dvds.

Thank you
CraZy DonKey
May 12th, 2008 @ 3:37 pm
This is going to be the best DVD EVER!
May 12th, 2008 @ 4:15 pm
Hi Andrew,

you got me - I need it.
You know, I'm just searching a flat in Hamburg, in July my scholastics will start there. It's the SAE, maybe you know them.
I think this will be a good start, I never made any 3D in my life (sadly the guys from the SAE use Maya - but now Blender will work fine). 7 days left :-) (time change, here's already the 13. May)

By the way, which 3D Program you'd prefer?

May 12th, 2008 @ 4:50 pm
Which do I prefer? Well, I still prefer Max at the moment. Although after learning a lot about Cinema 4D, it amazes me all of the integration it has with After Effects. Even Blender has great ways of integrating that are way better than 3D Max.

I'm very comfortable with Blender, but not as comfortable in C4D. Perhaps because I left the default shortcuts in the tutorials and so it was difficult managing 3 sets of shortcuts for 3 different programs that are meant to do the same thing.

An upcoming promo video will include animation from Cinema 4D and 3D Max.

Bottom line, either program you choose, the benefits of 3D are life-changing. Especially if you go the Blender route. I kept telling my team, "Look what I made in a free program." I think I should start selling it :)
May 12th, 2008 @ 4:57 pm
Heh, great Info.
I think I'll look some Demo's of the programs and some of your tutorials on the DVD, to see what's best for me.

Man, I have the fidgets, bigger than when I made my Abitur - Andrew, you know how to get us :-)

May 12th, 2008 @ 5:08 pm
Excited for the new DVD... :]

Question: -Andew. do you believe we could take the techniques we will learn from this upcoming DVD, and use them on some different 3D integration ideas?
u think it can give us tools to do some other stuff But 'Bullet shooting', with the stuff u teach there?

thanx! :]
May 12th, 2008 @ 5:47 pm
Thanks for the question elad,

Yes, the information on the DVD definitely goes beyond the Bullet. This is about 3D integration and working between the 2 programs. These principles are essential to many types of other effects, this project is just a fun example of how to do it. The core techniques and information will go a long way.
May 12th, 2008 @ 7:05 pm
Hi Andrew;

Since there will be a delay in the DL version will there be a faster mail/courier option for the DVD to Canada ( say USP or Overnight Canada Post for an additional charge of course) it just seems to take about 3 weeks to get the DVD;s and I ahve a AE/Cinema 4D project due on May 29th.

BTW: Perfect timing on this one, can't wait.

May 12th, 2008 @ 7:39 pm
Sounds v Interesting, I wish I could have buyed this one. I will definately buy this in future. No DOUBT, this porduct is AMAZING.

May 12th, 2008 @ 8:22 pm
3 Weeks to CANADA?!

Oh god, how long it will take to Europe? :-(
May 12th, 2008 @ 9:09 pm
Hi Guys,

Just wanted to show what C4D is capable of, below you find a link to a customer of me and the things they made for a very good Dutch movie called..
Scheepsjongens van de Bontekoe :)

Click and watch that QT movie and it shows the before and after very good..

Grtz to AK and the rest.. Sleeping bad cause Im waiting for the 20th....
May 12th, 2008 @ 9:27 pm
I too am a fan of Maya. I have currently been working on an Apache model in Maya, but I still have no real idea on how to composite it. I was thinking of using Shake, some experience with it, but i need basic composition, not the whole movie studio production package. So basically the compositing technique, how to plan, and integrate the footage with the 3D elements is what I am looking forward to the most in this DVD. I can model and texture a bullet, but its useless unless I composite it with some awesome footage.
May 12th, 2008 @ 10:36 pm
Sounds awesome! I'd really like a tutorial on how you did the cover of the DVD, looks amazing!
May 12th, 2008 @ 11:00 pm
Hey Rob,

I'm a great fan of some dutch movies with Kim Bodnia - like "II Kina spiser de hunde", but also some newer movies like "Adams æbler". (guys: BEST HUMOR EVER).

Is this such a dutch-comedy-movie, or about Pirates?
I like both :-)

May 12th, 2008 @ 11:58 pm
Hey Andrew, I was not knocking the new product it just seemed from the cover art that there was only one extended tutorial on here (Sam shooting the bullet). But with your reply to my earlier post you have reassured me that the dvd is indeed comprehensive with a good bit of deeper tutorials.

I have asked for this dvd for about a year now and you have obliged me. I have nothing but love for yah man. VCP is the shit. Keep bringing the good stuff and I"ll support you like no other blogger on here.
Tnx man.
May 13th, 2008 @ 12:08 am
Hey Andrew I am making a tutorial request in that section of the website. Check it out for me
I want VCP to take a shot at making the car light trails in Speed Racer as they turn extreme corners.
Plus I have another special one to request. Drop me an email if you have a chance I have some 3d car motion renders I can donate that play at 90 fps. They would be perfect to use as a test.
May 13th, 2008 @ 12:38 am
No worries Kevin, I appreciate the question it will help others too.
May 13th, 2008 @ 8:22 am
gief download now plxzorz.

May 13th, 2008 @ 5:36 pm
What a cool graduation present!!! Thanks Andrew!
May 14th, 2008 @ 12:18 pm
Andrew - Been visiting the site for about 6 months now, pumped about the 3dsmax integration, pumped for the bullet DVD..its what a ton of us have been waiting for. Branching off into the 3dsmax/AE integration world is an awesome path for VCP to keep following. (boujou/3d tracking tutorial !! ) You guys have a school unlike anything else on the web, and will continue to be supported, especially with 3d integration products like the bullet comin out.
May 14th, 2008 @ 6:53 pm
Where is this promotion trailer you've been telling us about?
May 14th, 2008 @ 7:39 pm
If it was done, I wouldn't have to talk about it :)
May 15th, 2008 @ 6:28 am
Geez...why is May 20th taking so long!!!!!!!!!

Andrew, thanks for using Blender. I'm a small, small business and I can't yet afford any other 3D package.

Thanks for looking out for us little guys!
May 15th, 2008 @ 12:09 pm
Hey Andrew,
as all the others already said, this project is amazing. I am really looking forward to hold it in my own hands ;)

By the way, I am using C4D and I really like it...but who knows, there are some things in Blender I should take a closer look at.

So, I just repeated what everyone else said, I just thought it would look good if the comment-post would be increased by one.

May 15th, 2008 @ 12:09 pm
Oooops, I meant the comment-count >.<
May 15th, 2008 @ 1:32 pm
