Music to Keyframes

I’m working on a new tutorial where I’ll be using a music track to generate animation. Its pretty straight forward but I’ll be covering some fancy expressions too.

This is going to be a good month for tutorials. So don’t feel bad about buying a couple of our DVDs from the online store.

September 13th, 2007 @ 12:22 am

September 13th, 2007 @ 1:28 am
Pretty nice screen ;)And all these linked to an audio layer would be awesome.

Convert audio to keyframes is one of my favourite options in AE.

Great news, i like animating with music ,could make some great effects.

All the way from New Zealand

PS. Any 3d program like Maya or 3DS MAX coming up, i thought you talked about it eirlier this year.
September 13th, 2007 @ 2:24 am
Hmmm, so would I be right in saying that you're using some numerical values obtained from a waveform and applied to a null object whose xyz coordinates are mapped to the squiggly lines? If that's the case then I'd be really interested in how you can extract the data from the waveform.
September 13th, 2007 @ 3:21 am
Sounds great, will you be using the trapcode soundkeys plugin?

September 13th, 2007 @ 3:51 am

September 13th, 2007 @ 7:02 am
Do you still have plans for a new Product DVD this month?
September 13th, 2007 @ 7:09 am
This sounds sweet. I hope that it will adress some some of the issues that After Effects 5.5's Motion Math, in which you could isolate both the Treble and the Bass to have each animate whatever needs to be animated.

I have not found anything with AE 7 that allows this.

Keep up the Good work!!

Looks awesome man! Nice idea, perfect for a music video. I bet the solution's been under everybody's nose and none's seen it :P

I'd also like to see, and I bet it uses the same concept, some stereo-like sound-synchronized bars -I hope you know what I mean.

Great stuff man, keep up the great work!
September 13th, 2007 @ 7:53 am
Andrew thanks for the tutorials!! They`re very good! great work!

September 13th, 2007 @ 9:51 am
The music tutorial will be awesome. I shoot and edit a lot of music videos and I think that will tie in nicely to some of my projects. I didn't reply to the Twitch thread, but that is what I am really excited about. I have been looking for a way around having to achieve that effect manually. Can't Wait! Thanks
September 13th, 2007 @ 9:57 am
Need more stuff to buy. Must have more stuff, Andrew you have a family to support (congratulations). How about templates or more clouds or more cool water tank stuff or................. oh crap, just build it and we will buy it. Thank you for your tutorials. They have taught me that hard work is good, smart work is better.

September 13th, 2007 @ 1:33 pm
@whoever just posted the link to the MGS fan film- it looks gorgeous. excellent work with the sound design, the colors, and the VFX. looks VERY impressive. i'm looking forward to info on the final film.

it's nice seeing what people come up with when inspired/empowered by vcp.
September 13th, 2007 @ 1:48 pm
Thats a good idea for a tutorial, and it only confirms, that we tend to think the same way, because I'm planning to do the same tutorial. The only difference is that this time I'll be using Trapcode's SoundKeys, since I've already covered some aspects of creating animation based on music in my previous tutorials.

And I have to say that I admire that you are taking care of your wife and Katie, doing all the things that you do to make a living, and you still find time to record those tutorials.

Take care!
September 13th, 2007 @ 2:39 pm
I've been waiting for something like this! You're really friggishly fast at making these things and tutorials, Andrew! I can't wait to see it when it's done. I've already bought the DVDs. I will keep purchasing your products in support. *roots*
Also, hope the baby's doing fine ^^

when i first saw this, i was impressed by the cool streaks. but now, I'm getting even more excited about the ability to use music to control my GFX and in some cases VFX. this sounds like defiant favorite and i i can't wait to use this tutorial for some of my personal videos. thanks for the awesome show, im looking for to the tutorial as well as the twitch launch.
September 13th, 2007 @ 7:09 pm

September 13th, 2007 @ 11:38 pm

Hi Andrew. I would like to make you a suggestion for future tutorials. Could you make a tut learning how we can do the fast run presented in the Smallville serie?? Another suggestion is about the bullet time of Matrix. I saw some tuts but none was satisfatory!

Wow. Just. Wow.

September 18th, 2007 @ 12:12 am
I like this site better than the one two days ago...great Tutorial.
September 18th, 2007 @ 1:51 am
Congrats on increasing your brood.
As great as your AE knowledge is, you should think about doing a set
at the comedy store, you've got pretty good timing. Think about open
mic night! Just imagine, you could create some stuff using After Effects
project it on a screen, then do funny voice over! it would be killer! and you'd get standing O's just for using mulitmedia (drunk people are easy to impress)! LOL you'll never do it and I realize this, but hey thought I'd suggest anyway. thanks for everything
September 18th, 2007 @ 2:47 am
Great new site!

You are the one, andrew!

Thanks for all your hard work!!!!!
September 18th, 2007 @ 10:19 am
i like your "music to keyframes"tut. a while ago i tried to recreate the Justin clip by the methode you explained at the end. then trapcode echospace to fill the 3D space like a boiling blanket. never finished the project because my playtime was over. if i just waited for your tutorial. very nice clip, very usefull. thanx from holland
September 18th, 2007 @ 4:58 pm
hey, i just wanted to let you know that you are very well known among the youtube community (well duhh) but i do after effects tutorials as well, and people always ask me for the download link etc to your products. Needless to say I do not reveal any information, but just wanted to let you know that a lot of ppl are pirating it...

On the other hand, thanks for all the hard work on the new site to help us AE noobs lol.

And this new tut is amazing!

here the link of that company

actually i was suprise to watch that logo on ur new web page
September 18th, 2007 @ 10:07 pm
Hey Andrew great tutorial as always, thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge!...hey about tutorial sugestions i support the idea from marcelo from brazil of making a tutorial about the bullet time effect of matrix, i know its really hard to shoot something like that cos i saw how they did it on matrix with lots of cameras recording at the same time... but i saw this tutorial on the internet

where the effects of bullet time is faked using just adobe premiere a panorama picture of the background and a free plugin to morph within adobe premiere called
WinMorph . the result is pretty cool... i ´m sure there´s must be some way of faking that effect in AE.

Here is the result movie from the tutorial

Thank you for another great tutorial. I like to ask a question, which is partially out of this topic: I wonder, if you can tell me, what font you use at your page header, as well as at image for this tutorial. They both look nice and are greatly contrasted for this kinds of promos. Thank in advance. Let at least 3/4 of your plans comes true.
September 19th, 2007 @ 6:42 pm
@ Marian STACH

I believe that font is Aurora cn bt.
September 19th, 2007 @ 9:17 pm
aww sweet new stuffs going on, just got back to school camp. this tut looks sweet
September 21st, 2007 @ 2:59 am
hello, I have a question that I hope can respond to me: What computer and accessories use at the time of working? congratulations by their Web, are of the best ones!
September 21st, 2007 @ 12:34 pm
In response to Chava Gallegos' posting about logo usage. First of all, the Mexican Bus company logo is a direct rip-off from of the Texaco logo and second Andrew is in the USA and the logo is not trademarked in the country.

In fact the logo in question is not unique enough earn a trademark in most countries as there is volumes of prior art that proves this.
November 28th, 2010 @ 10:09 am
That's a very cool look you've created.
