Video Copilot in Action!

Some of our Video Copilot customers have been taking our products to new levels. Through all of the emails I have received with video links, it is great to see them helping so many.

I had an idea to create a customer reel, but I think it would be easier if people posted videos on “free” sites like youtube.com and link them here.

Todd at Ripley’s used Designer sound FX for world record video:
http://www.ripleys.com/

It is the video with guy trying to hold the airplanes off (top right).

Ben is a finalist in the John Woo Contest with “Rivals”:
http://www.myspace.com/strangleholdgame

He used a few VC products so be sure to vote for him, or your favorite one ; ) Remember we are a family here.

I know there are many other great videos I have received, so please repost them here for everyone to see. This is your chance to show us your stuff (not literally). And don’t worry, we have all used the free tutorials to make videos ; ) I mean, who hasn’t blown their head off?

Of course I encourage you guys & gals to go beyond the basic tutorials and apply the principals from all of them to your own projects and videos.

On a side note, when I make a free tutorial I don’t mind if they are used professionally or in your own work. In fact I encourage it. If it helps you make some money or win a contest, all the better.

I’ve seen some Video Copilot stuff in news promos, show promos on the BBC, ABC, CBS and many other places on TV. If you have a link to VC in action please feel free to post it here as well.

Remember to keep the videos PG-13, fake violence is okay, of course.

So clearly buying Video Copilot products will only make you a better person, more productive and more attractive to beautiful women OR if you are a female, beautiful Men AND Women ; )
So you know what to do

NOTE: Be careful about using your own pay hosting to link videos, because you may get smashed with a bill.

What the heck, I think I”m first to post here. I was just checking in.

Well, I’ve used your stuff Andrew as you already know because I’ve sent it to you.. Here is a the trailer for my movie, “Despondent”. This uses some Riot Gear Elements, a lot of Designer FX and some adjusted Film Magic Pro. The rest, that’s all us :) It’s in the Download section of the website… Enjoy!

Great stuff again. Can’t wait to see more.

July 17th, 2007 @ 7:19 pm

Oooh, I gotta post some stuff when I am done recovering my harddrive, lost 500gb of stuff because of a HD failure! Also, great stuff above. Sweet to see others explore the possabilities of the prdoucts and tutorials!

July 17th, 2007 @ 7:22 pm

Alright here is a video that used a lot of Tutorials and Sounds from the Designer Sound FX DVD. The Intro and Outro have a lot of Andrew References.

http://files.filefront.com/USI+Intro+Video+15+High+Res/;8050566;;/fileinfo.html

I’ll be making a breakdown of how I did the heat wave effect soon.

Here is a demo reel I made a week ago for an internship.

http://serveio.com/icefields/demo-reel.html

July 17th, 2007 @ 7:28 pm

Also Andrew, in the Designer Sound FX dvd (or Riot Gear) you have a dust cloud on there that was fantastic but no where on the DVD is it explained how its made. I know it’s got to be Fractile Noise and using evolution some how and a large Solid layer. I can’t get it to evolve the way you did. Anyway it was a great clip but much to short (6 seconds). Any chance a short how it was done could surface?

July 17th, 2007 @ 8:22 pm

oops…forgot the summer promo. I thought it was on my myspace but i got rid of it. oh well ill post it another time. Cheers!

This one I’ve done for our corporate international festival (I am still trying to break into the professional film industry) and I am now in the top 5 and going to the final in Australlia in 10 days. YEY!

Can’t tell of the exact examples of VCP tuts that I used in the film, but it wouldn’t be what it is without Andrew’s inspiration. Bugger I had vary limited time and don’t even own a camera.

I think this is a great idea, and I am always impressed at how amazing most peoples work is on here. I can’t wait to see peoples stuff!!!

These tutorials are great. I made use of tutorial #23 “Moving 3D Lines” for a short video on a website I built.

http://www.builttolast.org

Click on the “About” link on top.

On a side note:

Andrew, let me know if you’re curious on how to get rid of the “Click to activate and use this control” that is always associated with flash items. There are a couple work-arounds and it creates a seemless look for your website.

Other then that, keep up the great work. I’m blown away by what you’re capable of.

July 17th, 2007 @ 10:02 pm

Great stuff.

Rick, thanks, I actually have that code somewhere, I should integrate it with the HTML files… I just never use Internet Explorer so I don’t see it everyday.

Hey Fresh0 your promos are very good, I never imagined those effects with religion were from Andrew kramer. They are very good examples, where are you from?

July 17th, 2007 @ 11:20 pm

Well, this isn’t really based on any of the tutorials… But the 3D room tut opened my eyes to the three-dimensional capabilities of AE and I ended up creating this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=wOwLTrhKYBQ

I’ve also used reflections, and fly-by text effects in various promo videos. And of course, ever since watching your videos, I pretty much use a feathered black eliptical mask on everything I do now… :D

July 17th, 2007 @ 11:21 pm

Here’s my online demo, not a lot of VC stuff but lot’s of compositing advice from Andrew. The body of the demo is just a single Photoshop file with every image on a seperate layer and pushed forward and back in z-space, then a single camera move. I dropped in video clips when appropriate.

Awesome Video!
Tip: if you add some 2d images of an actual city in the background, it will add another dimension of realism. If it is done right, you can’t tell the difference between the 2-d and 3-d buildings. They did kind of the same thing for a promo for the Chicago Film Festival.

All this work including to have parts of the video black&white and other coloured was done by myself. As you can see here:

Nearly everywhere i had text in the video i used a free BG video from VideoCoPilot.net that came with Serious Effects.

Hey Andrew & all who posted their reels yet,

thanks for those nice videos and inspirations. They all look very cool and personally give me some new input :)

The last 10 months we did a short movie and i used a lot of stuff i’ve learned from those tuts here @ videocopilot.net.

It’s a german short movie, but if you’re intrested you can download it as a x264 encode with english subtitles.

Here’s the promoclip for that movie:
http://www.videocommunity.com/pc/pc/mypics/528/display/4326

Here’s the movie itself (no subtitles, german audio):
http://www.videocommunity.com/pc/pc/mypics/528/display/4503

Here the x264 with english subtitles:
http://moebius.moebius-films.de/download/moebius_final_x264.zip (100 MB)

I used Riot Gear and Desginer Sound FX for the promo and the short intro for the movie. The “big” one (after ~ 1 min) was made with riot gear. All the other musicstuff was done by a german synthi pop band called beborn beton.

Hope you like it ;)

Clancy.. You asked and so shall receive. I don’t care as much for the Youtube Experience for quality reasons. I always prefer and give folks the option to download my work because I want the best quality shown of course. But hey, I hear ya and here is the youtube version. Does anyone know what format a film needs to be in to show up as 16×9 on youtube? My one trailer is somehow stretched, looks goofy. Weird.

I never do as good a job in several hours (or days) that Andrew does in about 15 minutes, but here are some of my attempts at using his tutorials. They are very short on plot, mostly an excuse to use effects:)

Road Rage Trailer – used the Cruise Control (green screen with car) tutorial from the Serious Effects and Comp DVD combined with one of the title tutorials (there’s a longer version with different music too):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I-hLnMP8d8

Explosive Repercussions: Used the Blown Away Tutorial and the basic keying tutorial (I know the guys keep walking and walking):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jidXKp5qhOY

And a video I did for a Tori Amos green screen contest (which I somehow won). I used a script from http://www.aenhancers.com/ to rotate a panoramic photo and the rest was stuff I learned from Andrew:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKq6IVL64qc

Muzzle Flash and general compositing:
http://vimeo.com/201870

I have quite a few others, but most of them were before I started getting into AE and some are not effects heavy.

Thanks Andrew for all the great tutorials, your website and your sense of humor. Any suggestions or comments from everyone would be appreciated…dish it out, I can take it, I think.

Hey Guys,

I had only one week to complete a music video for a Finnish band, signed with Warner music.
With a fairly ambitious concept for the time and money I had to set out to make the SD footage look as slick as possible. Video coplilot products and tutorials gave me the confidence to create shots that were needed, as well as a few that were a pleasent supprise to the client.

Video Copilot techniques used:

3d projection for a set extention
Action Movie Essentials (fog effects)
Advanced 2D motion tracking
Riot gear textures

Other techniques used:

Trapcode Particular
Knoll light factory
Magic Bullet

I would like to thank Andrew Kramer and the Video copilot team for advancing my knowledge of After Fx and helping me pull something out of the bag for what was a very scary brief for the time given. I had only started using AE just over a year ago and know I want to pursue my learning for this awsome program, using the excellent resources available at VideoCopilot.net

Cheers Guys!

Hey,
Over the summer I worked on a promotional video for the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, and I noticed they put it up on YouTube recently (although it’s been compressed horribly and squashed vertically :p).

http://youtube.com/watch?v=W9pWTEa9vJA

I used the Auto Bright Lens Flare preset towards the end, and built a neat 3d shot using the ideas from the Quick 3d Reflections present (although I couldn’t get the preset itself to work, so I figured out how to do a similar effect on my own).

Also, just the general knowledge I gained from VideoCopilot was a tremendous help in the post production phase overall! It was my first paid project outside of college, and the website was a big help, so thanks to everyone at VideoCopilot!

Hey,
Andrew Kramer I would just like to say that you have been a tremendous help to me. I downloaded after effects 8.0 a couple of weeks ago and had no idea at all how to use it. I went through a couple of your free tutorials and I’m amazed at the stuff I can do now. You are my idol! I have a question though… For the Lightsaber tutorial is there a way you can make it so I can use the lightsaber for AE 8.0??? Or is that not possible?
Anyways thank you for taking the time to make all those tutorials! Your the best man!

January 16th, 2008 @ 1:38 pm

HI

This is basically a massive rip off of several VCP tutorials put together as a promo for my after effects skills. Major thanks to Andrew and the team. Don’t worry, this is just a prelim to a proper show reel but I had to put something together quickly. Use the email link on the website if you have any comments.

Once again thanks Andrew.

I just watched the movie “War” (with Jason Statham and Jet Li) and on the DVD menu when you press play and it goes to the movie and they have explosion effects as a transition to it , well the explosion effects look JUST ones for Action Movie Essentials. Are they? =D
I got a quick screencap:

Looks even more like it in motion.

Hi Andrew! This is a movie I made with some friends. I can’t pick out a specific effect in the movie that you’ve taught me but I can say that you are truly an inspiration. We are so greatful that you are sharing your work.

And btw.. the movie is in Swedish.. without subs.. but you’ll understand the most parts.. :P
