Realm Pictures
July 20th, 2007 @ 1:06 am
you did, how could i resist?
July 20th, 2007 @ 1:13 am
Hey Realm Pictures, love the video. Send me an email, I'd like to get a better quality version, if I could.

July 20th, 2007 @ 1:22 am
I love the flick but the muzzle flashes were too bright.

July 20th, 2007 @ 2:00 am
It's great zombie fun!....shame they forgot to put the gun shot flashes in the window reflection :)

July 20th, 2007 @ 2:35 am
My nets slowed down so i cant watch it :(
July 20th, 2007 @ 2:42 am
Cool :)
July 20th, 2007 @ 3:24 am
Everyone's a critic ; ) But I can name several movies where studios "forgot" to remove production equipment from reflections from windows and cars etc...

A lot of people ask me: "do you have a hard time watching movies, since you know how they are created?" I tell them, "No, I just enjoy them."
July 20th, 2007 @ 3:59 am
Really nice, as for an independent production. ^^' You really are the man Andrew..., creating some great packs, for other people. Now everyone can make some great VFX with your help ^^' That's something..., lovely.
July 20th, 2007 @ 3:59 am
Very Sweet! Hey Andrew have you seen Grindhouse? This reminded me of that. It's a glorious movie.
July 20th, 2007 @ 4:21 am
Oh my god, grindhouse rocks! I'm a big Rodriguez and Quentin fan!
Just love it!

July 20th, 2007 @ 4:38 am
I was so expecting to hear, "BOOM HEADSHOT!"
July 20th, 2007 @ 4:48 am
Ahahah nice. I love the homemade stunts lol ie. the roll
July 20th, 2007 @ 5:26 am
Very well done. I love the birds after the first shot. Nice work... keep it up.
July 20th, 2007 @ 5:31 am
I wrote a post on my blog about my love for horror movies and the zombie fick is certainly one of my all time favorites to watch. I really enjoyed the video "Realm Pictures." howd you get the backlighting so nice so you couldn't even see their faces. Fantastic idea instead of using makeup. great job.

July 20th, 2007 @ 5:31 am
one thing I wanted to ask you Andrew is, you give out loads of good tutorials using video footage you have made, but are there actually any films you have made that are full length with all your effects in?
July 20th, 2007 @ 5:37 am
Andrew, im rendering a copy in sorenson3 1500 and i'll stick it on my webspace and email you the link.

I'm rendering it with the effects track but not the music but i can stick an .wav with both on too if you need it.

As for reflections in windows, they get grouped with the crappy title and the incoherent character placement. This scene was an afterthought of some airsoft footage we shot for sh*ts and giggles. We could spend longer tweaking it but we recieved a comission for a music video soon after and had to turn out attentions.

plus, we need to leave room to improve for the sequel ;)
July 20th, 2007 @ 5:51 am
I can't wait until I'm out of school and can start doing real things too :( I'm a film student and an intern on a graphics team at a software company; but I want to make movies.... sigh...
But anyway, that was cool. Really well done guys. Lots of people do zombie movies and most of them aren't done very well. Nice work.
July 20th, 2007 @ 5:52 am
Hey Bones,

It was a thought i had when shooting, as I said, when we turned up to the field we had no idea what we were going to end up shooting, so with no make up I just shot straight into the evening sky and exposed for that, crushing the silhouettes of the figures.

The hardest part was when myself (the long-haired bike zombie) and others interact with the 'heroes', since silhouetting was impossible. If you freezeframe it you'll see that their flesh is actaully 'dead colour'. We achieved this by animating a mask loosely around the zombies and using hue/saturation to select all flesh tones and make em greenish grey.

In the words of Robert Rodriguez

"Today is the day you should write your screenplay"
July 20th, 2007 @ 5:59 am
I've started my senior project for next semester already if that's what you mean ;)
July 20th, 2007 @ 6:06 am
July 20th, 2007 @ 6:18 am
Wow! That was really great. Only thing, is the muzzle flashes seemed to bright.
July 20th, 2007 @ 6:48 am
I've been on this site for a few weeks now, looking around at everything on here. I just have to say that Andrew, you've done a great job teaching many essential lessons for the novice effects editor/ motion-graphics artist. Realm Pictures, I have to say you've done the most with the lessons on here, as I've seen so far on
Everyone keep up the amazing work.
July 20th, 2007 @ 7:51 am
July 20th, 2007 @ 8:19 am
I agree. I want to start working on something similar to what RealmPictures did but utilize day for night.
July 20th, 2007 @ 8:28 am

July 20th, 2007 @ 9:37 am

July 20th, 2007 @ 9:50 am
Cool... a lot of things put into practice.
July 20th, 2007 @ 10:18 am
A message from the north! Im from Sweden and I get inspired of your tutorials! Here is a link to a music video, with some fx I have made.
July 20th, 2007 @ 10:21 am
Wow, good job! Nice to see what you can do with it :).

Unfortunately I'll have to miss 3 weeks of videocopilot blog posts and tutorials :(. But, going on vacation is not that bad :P.
July 20th, 2007 @ 2:15 pm
That was a great 2 minutes of my one thing...muzzle flashes were too bright (fix up the hue & sat to match the colors around it [yellow-orangish])

good job!
July 20th, 2007 @ 5:09 pm
Brb guys:D Im gonna go outside and shoot some video to use to the AME DVD from AK :D

July 20th, 2007 @ 6:05 pm
Very cool. I've been thinking about getting the Action Movie Essentials pack. I just got riot gear today and ive had the SFX or and FMP for a while. I only recently got the time to get into this kind of stuff. This zombie movie is def a good motivator for buying the action collection haha!

Thanks AK for the tutorials and things. Ive been on creative cow for years but i never discovered you for some reason haha.
July 20th, 2007 @ 6:06 pm

Great ! I love
July 21st, 2007 @ 3:58 am
Great ! I love it !
Realm Pictures, where did you get/buy the weapons ?
they're very nice ! Particularly the sniper !
July 21st, 2007 @ 4:22 am
they are all airsoft guns, hence 'Dartmoor Rangers' thats our airsoft team. Basically ultra-realistic high powered fully auto BB guns. Google and you will find thousands, be warned though - the hobby is addictive!
July 21st, 2007 @ 4:51 am
Nice effects there Daniel ! You've handled the motion tracking pretty good :). Grym video =).
July 21st, 2007 @ 5:08 am
Sure !
Google, my friend, will find lots of things. The only weapons that I bought, for a short-movie, were in a shop for child (weapons to play). It is really less realistic. It is insane the numbers of weapons available in this kind of shop. Soon the tank ^^.
July 21st, 2007 @ 7:48 am

The Sound FX you used... were they the famous Adrew Kramer ones or did you use something different? Nice work!

July 21st, 2007 @ 7:50 am
Oh... one more thing... I'm looking for some realistic weapons but I don't want to cheap plastic kind that look totally artificial. Any suggestions on a store for that? Thanks
July 21st, 2007 @ 7:51 am
I'm sorry... I totally skipped over some of your comments... someone already asked the question! My bad!
July 21st, 2007 @ 8:22 am
I used a combo of the BBC SFX library and the SONY SFX library, along with alot of interesting foley. We used cabbage, lettuce, oranges, and celery for the body hits and bone breaks, leather jackets for hits and falls etc. Alot of the gunshots were actually recorded by linking the sound mixer up to the nintendo wii and playing resident evil (finding a bit with no music/echo/zombies isnt easy as it turns out). you can hear the FX much better without the music and in hi-res but, well, its youtube isnt it.

July 21st, 2007 @ 9:16 am
WOW, that was awesome!!! I like the part with the zombies getting to the heroes and crawling around them - NICE STUFF!

Daniel, that music video ROCKS!!! Great motion tracking, great colors, great filming, great sky replacement - GREAT EFFECTS, MAN!

Finally, Andrew, I have to tell ya, your effects and your tuts help us so much that we can create REALLY cool stuff SO easily!!! I have to upload my 300-inspired vid to YouTube...

July 21st, 2007 @ 10:08 am

Hey when you mentioned changing their skin color... I thought of the Planet Earth Tut that Andrew did where he used Hue/Saturation (i think) and changed just that greens or other colors...

is that what you did? and then trash masked the heroes?
July 21st, 2007 @ 10:36 am
yeah thats pretty much it, it was an adjustment layer though. We just selected the fleshy colours and adjusted them to 'dead flesh' colour. We shot for about an hour, then applied FX for about 4 hours then the sound took about a week on and off.

July 21st, 2007 @ 1:40 pm
iam going to post a video tour of my weapons .any one need some let me know iam you weapon guy.
July 21st, 2007 @ 4:20 pm
