I never understand why just 2-d screens can be converted into 3d spaces. Is that something the technology based on motion-tracking? Or just placing track point?

Hey, great tutorial ! I'm following it step by step, but i've tried it a few time, but when i get to the light source, whenever i put it in a 3D layer, i don't get a 3D sphere like your do. Any esplainations on that ?

right in the beginning of this tutorial i get stuck .
when i click stabalise motion it does not let me set track points or anything . it shows the message "analising background" in the middle of my comp and it tries to scan the entire comp .
also if i shrink the comp down the the area i wanted to work with and let it stabalise motion it only makes the motion worse instead of less

Help! Whenever I try to move the Light on the z-axis it's not lined up right and goes into the street instead of going back behind the cars where it should go. How do I fix that?!

We are using Adobe After Effects CS6 and we have been following the procedures in the video of your but got stuck at time 16:30. We made a new light layer but it is stayed Gray. How can we fix this problem? Thank you!

Now, I do have one question regarding this 3D Light Casting tutorial. I'm working with Adobe After Effects CS6, and when you tell us to Toggle the Switches for the (Ground Plane) it doesn't give me the option to use the (Classic Color Dodge), or (Luma Matte). The only time it gives me the option to make those changes is when I remove the (3D Layer - Allows this layer to be manipulated in 3 dimensions). Only then I'm able to us the (Classic Color Dodge) and (Luma Matte). Please help, your knowledge is very valuable to me.

My TV/Video class is doing VCP tuts for an assignment, and the 3D Layer thing for this won't show up. More specifically, the color arrows won't show.

If you want your energy ball more visible, you can get a free plugin called unmult and just change the tail y orientation to 10 at the beginning of the video!

Hi everyone!
I was trying to follow this tutorial, but I have AE CS5.5, here the tracker works very different, in fact, it does the tracking automatically, and no longer affects position or anchor point, now it adds kind of a new effect layer, so, I couldn't make the reverse tracking... =/

Hey I'm about half way through the video. And I am a noob, but I must say, that you should include a pulsating effect on the larger "aura" of the center, it added more of a feeling of energy to it in my opinion. I am really loving these keep it up.

I used my light source instead of LUX....
But when i added particles using particular..i cant color them.....they juss render out white...

Really fantastic tutorial, Im currently trying the 30 day trial of CS 4, and I actually worked the whole night yesterday on completing this tutorial.And I already feel like ive learned alot about AE. Unfortunatly... When Im nearly 95% done with the movie, and you want me to take the Street Footage Comb and drop onto a new comb. My AE just freezes up, and if I click anywhere with my mouse it says (Client is not responding) and the only way out is Ctrl+Alt+Delete :/ Also if I just try to render without doing the last step to reverse the motion, it just freezes up. I guess my Computer is just too weak to run with the full power of AE :/
Im running Windows XP SP 3 on Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E7200 @ 2.53GHz, 2.53 GHz, 2,00 GB RAM with a NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT 1024 MB DDR2. With newest drivers ofc. Light (your light) goes down University Place, where it starts is corner with 13 Street and further up one block is Union Square, further down is NYU. Those streets never sleep, safe place thought

one thing I dont think you went over... In the original video, it seemed like there was a slight displacement map created by the orb... Could you maybe do a small tutorial on this as well?

Hey, I was just testing this, and I may sound likea bit of a noob since I'm just testing out the basics, but I cant seem to get the intensity of the elipse solid when combining 2 with "add" blend mode. Its just the same colour, and not intensified.

Hey Andrew. I tried this effect with live footage and when I motion tracked it I parented the Particular Null to the track null the Particular Null followed but actual Particular didn't.. HELP PLEASE!!!

Amazing tutorial, i really like the result! The only thing i've noticed is one effect thats' missing at the end of your tutorial. As i've seen in the preview movie, there's a kind of littel distortion behind the light streak when the energy ball flyes towards the camera. The source footage becomes a little bit distorted. How've you done that!

Hello there, I'm workin on a project with a similiar energy ball that flies around in Sthlm. The only issue I'm havin is finding good quality sound effects to match the energyball with all the flying angles and such. Hey all,
In response to the turbulence field that Andrew didn't put into the tutorial, Here's how I got it to work:
- Duplicate the "tail" particles.
- Duplicate the footage
- Move the duplicated particles layer just above the footage.
- Set the matte of the footage to "Luma".
- On the footage layer: Effect>Distort>Turbulent displace.
The particle stream becomes a mask for the turbulence layer. Increase the size of the particles in the particle layer, which will increase the size of the mask you have just created. Mess with the particle settings as well as the turbulent displace settings, and Voila..

When I set the "Light Source" layer to 3D, it dissapears... if I move it back on z space it reappears, but if I move it forward again it fades away... if I switch the "Light 1" layer off, it doesn't do that, but it'll turn everything along the grid plane black

Hey Andrew, how did you get the air turbulence to follow the plasma ball through the project like that? Is shows up beautifully in your demo video but you didn't post it in your tutorial. Just curious how that was done.

Dont know if you'll see this But I hope so Andrew or someone haha But I am using CS5 on a macbook pro 64 bit OS now when I do this tutorial everything goes great but when I bring in the glowing sphere comp I can see it but it disappears when I make it a 3 d layer ??? but the layer is there ??? does anyone know why ?? maybe i'm wrong but in your video it looks as if there is a trail of broken wind, similar to how it appears that "The Bullet" is breaking wind as it travails through air only in this case it follows the light streak. i could be totally wrong but in you're tutorial it appears you left that out. i would love to learn how to add this.

How aggravating! I had just gotten to the point where you turned up the "aperture" of the camera to 432 and it froze my NVIDIA video card, which repaired itself, but then AE crashed. Grrrrr....

Hey Andrew, love your stuff, only one problem, when I go to put the grid over top of the street and I select the Generate Grid effect, its a grid but then a black background behind the grid and I cant get the black to go away so I can see the street footage, it goes away when I click the eye of course but then also hides the grid. hi, i've just started with after effects and your videos are brilliant, they have helped me so much with all of my stuff. Hi AK, thnx for the tut m8, i have a problem im using pc , and cs4 but when i apply the Vegas effect and set the stroke in the mask path my paths wont take the effects even if i change the values ,its stay with no effects

Hey Andrew, great tutorials, but you knew that already, didnt you? Anyways, first of all, thanks for all the free stuff.
It's probably asking for too much, but I think that if you were to display subtitles, showing the steps, kind of like cornell style notes, it would make remembering the steps easier. That way you could keep track of the steps, and the changes you make as you go along. Anyways, thats my 3 cents.

great tutorial, as per usual. i'm just wondering if there's a part 2 to this that's coming soon, because it seems that there's a distortion in the atmosphere as the light passes that I'm not getting from what's being shown here. Am I missing something?

Yea, I'm also on an earlier verion of Particular, v1.5. If you change the velocity really close to 0, the particles are emitted in line form, which produces an effect close to what the amazing Mr. Kramer is doing.

Awesome tutorial...I was curious how you might create the gas effect comming off of the light effect. You can see it in the preview, but I didn't see how its created in the tutorial. Since I'm number 245 on the comments, Im not sure if you will see this...but I thought I would ask

hey damian maybe i thik i can help you. try creating the same sort of mask/light he did in this video then add a lens flare see if that works.

It's a great FX because the light is so realistic and nice pulsaring. I think a lot about it, and i try to do this effect but It's not good. Harry Potter have a great FX. I've learned all my AE stuff from Total Training, but man your tutorials are really way advanced. Thanks for putting up this site, it really inspired and revitalized my AE stuff! The only AK tutorial which has only 1 funny moment
otherwise this was an action packed Tutorial just like the Action 2 DVD.One thing to appreciate is the way you show how do things with and without 3rd party plugins.
Also was wondering if we can add 1 more plane perpendicular to the ground plane and casts lights on the car's nearby to increase the realism. Maybe you want us to try that out !!

Thank you so much! This tutorial has been great! Me and my siblings are making a movie for my Grandpa who just ended his fight with cancer. This effect really helped us a lot. One question though, I rendered the light ball, but then it was really slow on my quick time player. Is this how it will turn out in the movie?

Nice tutorial, as always. I'm wondering - really as a point of theory - why it's necessary to do all that reverse tracking. Couldn't you track the original camera shake, apply it to a null and then parent the AE camera to that null (after setting it's original position and orientation)? I'm sure you thought of that and there must be some reason, but it's escaping me.
