Hello, Andrew.
Thanks for the tutorial. I´m teaching years ago and I always recommend you to my students of after effects. I´ve tried to make this tutorial, but when I drag the corner pin present an afx panel say that the class "Effect" has no any property and method with the name layer. Do you know what´s wrong with this expression?

Hi, i've followed this tutorial to the letter and other and anytime i do any motion tracking, when lay in text etc, i have issues of it changing scale and skewing and wondering off my scene with a mind of it's own. I've tried in mocha and also with boujou and seem to keep getting the same results. I'm on the verge of throwing my laptop out the window, any suggestions guys? Plz,,,,, this is what i keep getting,

Hey, just wondering how i can have mocha... because i have AE CS6 but when i type in "mocha" to find it in my computer, it does, but when i click on it, it says that it needs to be open from adobe after effects... i don't really understand what they mean by that... please help... i'm new with all of this but i really need to do this effect for an important project. Is there an other way i can do this if mocha doesn't work?

my text does not appear in the working comp? followed the steps but after i write some text then switch to the working comp my text is not there, any ideas?

A word of warning about Mocha. My version came with CS 5.5 (which I JUST got), but it's version 2.3 and the current version is 2.6. I found out that in order to get the current version (even though it's only a partial upgrade), I'll have to buy it. Also, the version I have will NOT import mpeg files. Since my boss won't pay for the upgrade and Mocha won't import the format I work in, basically, it's useless to me. Good luck!

any body having problem that when u copy to clipboard after effects cannot paste?
solution: just close after effects and reopen the project file it'l work just f9.Hope it helps

we have plenty of presets except this in spanish. I attempted in various ways but can´t find the error and there are many variables...some help would be nice.

This tutorial sucks! I have been at it for 3 hours and still can't get it to work.
Im using CS5 and it seems the files are for an older version.
I did everything step by step but my sign keeps moving with that zombie mind of its own. The first part works fine but as soon as you try the corner pin to null stuff it all goes to #$$%#
It's all good though because your other stuff rocks!!!

I had the same problem, it's something wrong with the export tracking data, just use another format when you copy to the clipboard (i used the one that said "corner pin only", but that messed with the "danger ahead" tracking data, so you have to use diferent comps each with diferent tracking data formats.....if i wrote something wrong is because i'm from chile

This is BS. I got cs5 and Mocha 2.2.0 and this crap isn't working at all. The paste part does f.a. and after that this tute is completely useless. i've watched it over and over...no help, no explanation of what does what and why so i can apply it to my own scenario. How is this education.

Anyone can help me, what happens is that when I put the plugin corner pin to null this sends me an error, 3 in fact, with the 3 factors that have properties, position, rotation, scale ..... I do not know what could be if someone can answer the mail would be very happy.

To all the people on CS5 who are having problems with the present once pasting it on the Null Layer:
On Mocha V2 you need to select the Export Corner Pin Data (CS3 or older versions). Then you paste the Corner-Pin_to-Null into the Null layer as per the tutorial and link it to the Tracking Comp. You then parent the Null layer to the Tracking Comp layer as well as parent the Red Pole layer to the Null layer. That did it for me.

What button did you press for the text to jump onto the ground at around 8:56 in the tutor. It looked like all of a sudden a magnet pulled it onto the ground and layed it flat.

I used mocha to track a simple footage and when pasting the track to AE I'm not getting the tracking correct, When I typed the text as in your sample but it doesn't stay put. Both videos are 24fps and 640 by 480. The tracking looks OK in Mocha but not in AE.

When the error pops up you just continue, select the Tracking Comp layer in the null's effects window (the list where you choose what layer to take the data from) and reactivate the expression back

Hey gang. One reason the expression may be having probelms is because you're exporting the "transform data" from the first part of the mocha sesion, not the "corner pin data" Andrew uses. I only mention it because I made the same mistake

how are you guys from videocopilot .. know, always been a fan of ingenious creations of Andrew .. I say that over the years that follow the videocopilot have only improved in my graphical issues .. always amazed at the innovations - like much of the last tutorial ... the preset doesn't work.. cs4 osx.. i get a 3 part error message when i drop it onto a null that says it's disabling the expression because it couldn't find the corner pin effect

Each and every tut worth more than the whole training CD from VTC, Lynda.com and other commercialized training. Those training cost around $60 and they are essentially useless. Andrew's tut not only useful and inspire other as well. Keep up the good work Andrew, you probably didn't intent the magnitude of this, but I'm sure it's really big appreciation from many.

Great site man. I am hooked on AE. My only issue is with Mocha. My corner pin data doesn't seem to work when I paste it to After effects. I have a pain in my ass from it. Everything else is great. Keep the tuts coming. Can't get enough of them.

seems the preset doesn't work in CS3, but I bet you knew that.. however, still a great tut. The planar tracking is great and the technique to export transform data from mocha to AE CS3 still works exactly as shown. With that you can produce the same results, just not very conveniently.

Jason, I think you might have your after effects version in another languaje.
For example, I work in a spanish version, so I have to substitute the expressions to spanish.
Like for example: instead of "Layer" I have to write "Capa", and instead of "Corner pin" I have to write "Posicionar los bordes". And with a lot of patience translate it all to your languaje.

Been days now and I still can't seem to get the Skull right! How do you do it! I have tried everything and the skull doesn't look like yours. Can you please do a tutorial on drawing skulls. I tried drawing the skull on my screen with a marker and then tried to trace it, but now I can't get the marker off my screen. I tried correction fluid but it is making it worse.Rebooting doesn't help either.. Please help, never knew drawing in after effects would be this hard!

I never blog post but wanted to thank you for these excellent tutorials on After Effects. These are the best on the web and (IMO) actually /better/ than the commercial DVDs I've seen. Video delivery is far better than text for learning applications - no frustrations with "where the heck is that drop-down", unclear instructions, or user-error/misunderstood instruction that I'm sure we've all experienced learning technology in the past using texts. Just rewind the video - it couldn't be clearer. Thanks for including the project files... What an incredible resource. Also - what makes it, is your personality and humor. Not to start a blog war - but say "what a jerk" to the guy wearing red pants - absolutely hilarious, and not offensive at all within the context and "how" you stated it. Ignore the "other" poster, please. (Are you kidding me?) Please don't take this kind of criticism seriously. I look forward to using this site as a resource to learn AE. Who knows? One day I might quit being such a tight-wad and buy one of your products, even!

I gotta problem with the tutorial...
The tracking in Mocha is working great, but then when I try to get the track to AE it is not copying it to the click board.
I checked, there is no problem with the settings according to my check.

i just playing with the preset..and the preset work not only at the ground..but at the space too..,just put Null object at the ground and OBJECT at the space(above the Null object)..parent it and it works..really helpful..

The preset doesn't seem to work for me (CS5 OS X). When I try and drag it onto a null, I get a popup claiming that it couldn't find the Corner Pin effect.

Just an FYI for Mac users - the Mocha export settings in CS5 are a little different than shown in the tutorial above, and some of the corner pin export settings WON'T work with this preset.
So far I've found that the following export setting works best:
After Effects Corner Pin[corner pin only, supports RG Warp and mochaImport] (*.txt)

I suppose that when u were tracking in mocha u have opened the AE too...I had a similar problem..once..try run AE after u finished tracking and copy data to clipboard..it worked for me well

Great tutorial!
Fighting with Mocha a bit thought. I've successfully tracked the main area, Layer 1. But when I add the smaller area, Layer 2 to be tracked and link it back to Layer 1, it doesnt' seem to follow that first track. It's not visible when I scrub the timeline and if I export the data it doesn't have more than a single key frame. Is supposed to track the area as well? I thought that was the point of linking the layers.

Thanks a lot Andrew! A few weeks ago, I was trying to replicate what you did in your blast tutorial, and I could not get the Mocha AE track to work! But this tutorial really helped me! I think I will be setting the taxi on fire in a few minutes........

Great tutorial. Love the concept, I think I'm doing Mocha correctly but when I go to paste the track data in AE the paste option is greyed out. The track data looks right in the clipboard so I'm out of ideas?

For some reason I cant import the mocha data to my after effects. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or if I just missed something?
I tracked my video (mp4) in mocha which worked but when i click on copy to clipboard it isn't pastable in AE.

Dear Andrew, Sergio and friends,, no homo, but after watching this tutorial, download the preset, and try it.. I feel like I wanna kiss you guys... coz I always use mocha if I can't track my footage in AE, but before this I got a trouble to put lots of footage into mocha's track. But using this null object technique, now all my problems are solved!! thanks sooooo much guys!!!
And btw, Andrew, if you read these comments carefully, there's actually some guy who says that you are wrong mentioning a film in your tutorial (Independence Day instead of I am Legend) without even realize that you are joking. LOLOLOL XD

For exemple if you are close to a cliff or a lake, there is a limit to warn you. So if you cross the line and kill youself, it's your responsabilty. I think the reason you might be having scale issues is because you forgot to check "perspective" on the track layer in Mocha.

I hope folks appreciate the free presets and buy a few of the products...this will indeed be a handy preset, I've spent a bit of time trying to master mocha and it won't always be as easy as described here but nevertheless a good starting point for folks keen to move away from the old point tracker....

Trying to do just this but I have a crane shot that I pan in to a Over the shoulder shot of a man in a field and i tried to track the open field and put a barn in the shot but the barn keeps moving when the camera is panning over?

Another great Tut! I am happy that you are spending some time covering Mocha, its a very great program and your last 2 tutorials have helped me implement it into my own work. I hope to see your use of rotobrush soon, I love to concept of not having to roto track manually, but am having a hard time getting the settings right with the rotobrush. Looks like the kind of work that Gareth Edwards did alot for his feature 'Monsters'...and he mentioned in an interview that he used Optical Flares for a few shots. The film is a good example of what can be achieved with AE and Premiere with a bit of imagination.
