also, 'Nemo' a way to get blood to splatter with this effect:
-make a layer that looks like blood (use a blood texture, fractal noise, the colour 'red', etc
-apply the CC Mr. Mercury effect to the layer.
-Follow, Kramer's tutorial, but Up the velocity and birth rate so it 'splats' on in a split second!

As alexa pointed out, rain drops refract light, so the 'image' inside the rain drop should be flipped, showing the sky on the bottom, and the ground on the top.
A simple way to do this using CC Mr. Mercury is put a '-' sign in front of your gravity parameter, and then flip the layer the effect is on on the vertical axis.
There is probably an easier way to do this though :P

I realy enjoy the tutorial. It is quiet simple and cool, but i think there's a little thing missing.I thing u should add a little of ur magic to it( deform some drops as they slop down ). U r definitly the LORD OF AFTER EFFECT.

Hello,
i don`t know if this is the proper place to post this. It is possible to make some kind of t1000 terminator using CC mercury? also can it is possible to use the "speed particles tutorial" to make some kind of teleport effect like in "jumper" movie or smokelike teleport like Nightcrawlwer in Xmen movie?
Thank you verry much

"hi andrew really great tutorial.i still curious your computer system can u say ur system coz my computer so heavey for after effects so many time i asked to you pls giveme answer this time i will buy new computer i wait answer keep your good job"
I think you should have at least 4gb of ram a good dual procesor or tow and at least a Tb of hardisk space and a 64bit operating system.
I use 4 gb ram and an Intel core 2 duo tha thing is i have xp 32 bits and it only reads 3.2gb olso i have 1TB of internal hard drive and an external 1TB for hd footage back up. u should use xp 64bit
its been a year or so since i bought it so im shure u can get this config way more cheap now or a betta one.
by the way i got it from B&H and included Premiere Pro 2 back then with matrox video card and an ATI But ithink nividia its betta isnt it?

Hi Andrew I haven't heard the clip with audio yet so I don't know if you talk about it, but the waterdrubs do show the 'background' upside down, so it's a bit wrong the way you show it. Don't know if there's a easy way to fix it.

hey nice i was wondering when you use an adjustment layer s there anyway to stop it affecting a layer beneath it?
as in want to do this but my subject and background are seperate layers so in order for the droplets to look correct have to use an adjustment layer to affect both of them bu then this leaves me with the problem of not being able to add a background with out it being turned into part of the mr mercury, please help

Nice, I had forgotten about Mr Mercury! Great use for that effect.
I was really hoping to see some use of caustics in this one but I will keep adding that to my prayers each night. Thanks Andrew!
PS - I think I saw Sam hitching on Rt.66 last night.

Thanks Andrew - and much like Jack commented I too was thinking of using this for a blood-splatter effect. Here's a test clip of it on my site (note that the footage will be very different, this is just a proof of concept to myself):
http://slaptheface.com/blog/?p=242
Also, Jack, if you've come up with anything I'd be interested in seeing how you've done it and what you came up with, or if anyone has any ideas on how to improve it I'd love to hear them as well.

One thing that I thought I'd mention is that when you look through a rain drop on glass, the image past it is flipped upside down rather than being right side up. So it would probably work better to duplicate the layer and flip it vertically and add the effect so that the image is refracted to being upside down through the water.

Great one, got a question though-
I wanted to make the drops to freeze, then orbit around them; unfortunately these aren't particles, so I tried with CC Particle World and Particular. But Particle World does not seem to have a "Physics Time Factor" and Particular can't use a layer as a texture for the particles, can it? Sorry if I'm missing something, just could not get it right

good demo of the uses of some of the effects people might not see as a useful, made me want to look at all the effects i first thought were redundant to me and see what they can really do.
also, by you showing me the different ways you can manipulate this effect has given me the idea for the horror film i'm making where with this plugin i can create a blood splatter on screen that can appear then run down the lens, so in that respect, thanks for the idea!!!
regards,
Jack (U.K)

I get really sick of people talking bad about these tutorials, Andrew does posts these for free and takes time out of his day to do this. We are lucky to have these.
Andrew, I was just wondering if there was a way to flip the images inside of the droplets?
Thanks for the awesome tutorial!
