Hi,
is this scripts work well in AE 2020 on your side?
For me it run for some layers but not all.
Then it crash saying : Unable to execute scripte at line 60. AE error : Unable to set duration.

Is there a fix for this?

Your comment is awaiting moderation.

Are you reversed layer in Premiere Pro? If you does, reverse it again in AE, set Trim Compose and reverse again, lol

Hi, I don't have Premiere Pro, I do have pinnacle studios however. How would I do this with pinnacle. If I cannot, what order would do things. Would I edit the video and edit all of the scenes together and then add the effects, or would I add the effects and then edit the scenes together?

I have no idea what the purpose of this Script was,i watched the video twice to see if I could find anything he said to help my editing out but nope, maybe because I only work on small projects and convert all of my video before I even bring it to AF and AP.
Tyler
How could you not see what the purpose of this script? You copy all of your cut footage from premiere and paste it into after effects, run the script, and it puts everything into nicely precomposed and trimmed comps. Then you do all of your effects in the pre-comps so when you go back to the main comp it is organized and not 200 layers, which I have done in the past. This is very helpful in large projects.

Wow. You've saved humanity a total of six billion hours with this script. Thanks Andrew.

Unfortunately I'm getting an error message when I try to render my Trim Composed comps. Perhaps we can figure out how to solve this issue. I've started a thread on the forum here:

Maybe this is a stupid question, but is this a better alternative than the Premiere to AE Dynamic Link? I have the Adobe Production Premium suite which allows for Dynamic Link. Dynamic Link seems easier because there is no rendering required in AE.
Thanks!

Hi Andrew,

Thank you so much for this tutorial and for all of them actualy!

However, I have a slight problem that makes the script useless and I can't figure out why... I explain:

I do my edit in Premiere CS5, select my cuts in my timeline, edit Copy or Ctrl+C, then go to AE CS5, create a Comp and then Edit paste or Ctrl+V. All my clips are imported from Première to After Effects but instead of being original footage, they're imported as compositions inside my Comp. So, if I open each comps individualy, I have the entire clip inside them. I don't know if you understand what I am trying to explain but if you do, it would be great if you could tell me what I am doing wrong...

Thanks a million,

Charles

Hey Andrew, just letting you know there's a small bug with this script. If a clip has been set to play back in reverse (ie -100% speed) the script stops when it encounters that clip. Not a huge pain, but it would be cool if it could handle that gracefully.

Thanks!

Incredibly helpful script. Just wanted to point out that if you are using Final Cut Pro to edit you can use the free script FCP2AE made by Popcorn Island and it will bring your footage into After Effects the same as copy and pasting from Premiere. An affordable alternative to Automatic Duck. Thanks again, VCP is invaluable.

Dude, you just read my mind!

I was just halfway working on the trimming and precomposing of a 120+ cut music video and because I got bored halfway I just went to this site to browse some stuff and there you go and give me this script! Hallelujah!!

One cool feature could/would be if there was a way to either have the precompositions automatically named by the starting frame number or just sequenced (001,002,003,004 etc)... would make it a bit simpler when bouncing back and forth and just identifying which clip is which..

However, I believe there is a bug in it.

What many people do not realize is that this script also helps with rendering time.
After effects will render some effects even if they are on the underling layers obscured by the layers on top of it. This is y design. By trimming the comp you prevent the render of unnecessary effects = faster render of the final project!
alexander
Andrew,

Here's a quick tip for Sony Vegas users, you can do your basic edits in Sony Vegas(whichever), then save the project as an .AAF . It may work for other programs and might lessen the work load for some of you VFX freaks out there...

Thanks for the script it's definitely useful.

Cheers from Romania,
Alex.

Excellent like always Andrew!

You are amazing dude, no one like you to make tutorials. You have done more than 100 tutorials and ALWAYS mention the basic steps. The other day I've started to see a tutorial from spain that I've downloaded but the guy speaks faster and seems like you MUST know how to use the program... and the tutorial title means "basic steps"... lol

Whatever, you are awesome, all the staff! Cheers!

That just made my work a little easier

One other option I see is that if you want to share this project with another colleague for instance you could just select the comps he needs to have in the library and select 'reduce project'. That way he just has the stuff he needs and you can then replace those afterwards when he's done.

Hi Andrew

Thanks for the script, this is gonna be absolutely indispensable from now on in my daily work live.

In case someone might want to know, I use a very cool trick for import my edits from Final Cut into AE, take your sequence in Final Cut and export XML file of it, then go into Premiere and import the XML file, now save as you want your Premiere project, after that you just have to import as Premiere project in AE and boooommm there you have your cut perfectly timed. Hope someone find it useful.

Thanks for your hard work Andrew.

Worth noting that we recently used this technique for a big tracking and compositing job and only halfway through realised for some reason the entire edit had slipped - each clip in turn had this problem. We had to re-track a number of shots and comp them again. So whilst in theory this is a great solution (and has worked before and after), I would recommend Automatic Duck. If you do want to go down this route, I would definitely also render out a mov of the edit from FCP and if possible go clip to clip to check that it's accurate. (Use ctrl+alt+shift & right or left arrow to skip through clips on your AE timeline (on mac its cmd+alt+shift & right or left arrow)). I overlaid the rendered mov above the timeline at 50% opacity. (There are other ways to check, but it gets complicated!). That way you can check at each edit point that your timeline is accurate. Not a bad idea to do this anyway. It doesn't take that long and flags up serious problems early on if the edit has indeed slipped.

When I cut a long piece in FCP , I usually dont need efx on every clip. I nest the clip and send it out as XML to AE and work on just that clip. That way I eventually have a complete seq in FCP that plays back just fine with only the necessary clips sent to AE for work.
If Premiere Pro were my primary editor, I would love using the dynamic link to just send over those select clips that need work and use PP to play back the final seq.
I realize my work flow is more an Editors approach then a VFX Compositors approach. Whatever works!

How do you track in mocha? every time I open a file into it it says it cant texture the image.
krrusel
It has to be an image sequence
David Byrne
Depends what type of codec you are using. On a PC for example, as well as in the Mocah supplied with CS4, Apple Pro Res isn't recognised. (It works fine in CS5). If in doubt, an image seq is a good way to go, but if you have to render out tons of clips to track, you may find your hard drive starts to get full pretty quickly. Using this plug-in will save an enormous amount of time there too - see Andrew's method for rendering Proxies, and just make your output module a PNG, TIFF or JPEG Seq (the latter will likely be much smaller). Then you can track these sequences in Mocha and re-export the data to After Effects. As a further potential 'gotcha', last year I was working with tracking data that just seemed 'off' no matter what I tried to do. In the end I realised I was tracking the image sequence but applying the data to the original ProRes movie and it was slightly out of sync. Bit of a weird one, the frames all matched to my eye, so not sure what happened there exactly but I'm guessing an issue with compression of the codec being different affecting the track? Some day I will research this! Anyway, problem was solved by using the image sequence in After Effects as well as Mocha. So you are applying your tracked data in After Effects, to the same file that you tracked from in Mocha.

For all FCP users you can use the free script here to use just like the copy and paste feature in Premiere. All you have to do is save your XML file and then open that XML final using the script.

It's great
