I found this quite fun, but it would also be a lot cooler, I think, if there was a tutorial that showed how to make an orbiting moon, as well.

I'm using lowly CS3... any idea how I access the mode - hard light - opacity when on the fog. I found hard light in the layer - blending - hard light but no options to reduce opacity :'(

Hey Jose,
I'm sure you've already received your answer to this post as it is from a few months ago, but I was having the same problem in CS5 until I realized I wasn't holding the "alt" (option) key while clicking. I just missed him saying to do that. If this isn't the problem with yours, I hope you've figured it out by now and I wish you luck!

Whenever I use the CC sphere effect, an annoying green x appears. How do I get rid of it? it is still there after I render.
Luis
06/22/2011
maybe you are using a older version of AE which does not have cc sphere permission to render out. I am guessing you have a trial version of it. get CC sphere at cycorefx.com. I hope this help.

Hi Andrew. Thanks for these great Tutorials. I have just purchased AE CS5.5 and I have been watching this tutorial The Blue Planet.Around the 8min 6 sec mark, when its time to add the atmosphere, I think you Alt double click on the Master Earth mask. You are then taken to a screen with earth map on it. When I try this I am taken to a screen with the earth as a globe. Not sure what is happening here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Harv

I'm sure you won't read this since it's been 3 months from when you posted this comment, but to anyone else wondering, you just need to double-click on the Master Earth comp instead of Alt double-clicking when using CS4/CS5/CS5.5!

Andrew,
Thanks for the informative tutorials. I have just started using after effects, but your help made it easier to jump in and start creating video effects. It is very exciting to be able to actually branch into the world of advanced graphics. Very well done!
I had a question about the graphics that were provided for this tutorial: are they provided under your video copilot license?
Again, thanks for all the help!

Thank you very much for posting all these tutorials. I have been working in Photoshop and Illustrator for many years, now that I have learned After Effect, I can bring my art alive. Your tutorials have help me very much in school, and I show all my classmates your website. Even my teacher said he will pass on this website to his future students.

That's totally easy! You just need a green screen and then Keylight 1.2 to key it out. Of course you can also use chroma keys but they're not quite as powerfull... ;)

Andrew,
You are the funniest guy around (at least the funniest guy around who makes tutorial vids for AE). Thank you very much for the multitude of tutorials that you post on this site.
I was a bit overwhelmed trying to learn after effects before I found videocopilot.net. I had scoured youtube and found very few videos that were worth the price of admission. I happened upon one of your vids and was instantly hooked.
I hope you see this comment, because I would like to say a heartfelt "Thank you"

I learned a lot from this tutorial when I was first starting out, but since then I've found other ways of achieving a more "photorealistic" look.
The main thing is the atmosphere. You can just make a new layer with whatever color you want, add the "CC Sphere" filter on it and set it to screen. Then make it a little larger than the planet, add a small blur, and BOOM, a great looking atmosphere. Obviously the lighting and shading setting would change depending on what direction the planet is facing, etc. And you'd also want to parent everything together.

I took a stab at this project using AE 6.5. I had to improvise and do a bunch of manual keyframe settings; becuase, 6.5 doesn't have all the same fancy tools CS3 does - such as fractal noise and glow. I'm struggling with larger resolutions...the sphere's come out looking like eggs. Anyway...awesome tutorial. Here's my version of your project - the egg version.

Something to keep in mind is that if you are going to be using this for anything other than personal use, you can NOT use Google images. It's a violation of their license. However, NASA lets you use their images for free with no restrictions. As for the rotation, to ensure that you have a smooth rotation (without any hiccups, seamless rotation, etc.), put a keyframe in the first frame, then hit End to go the end of your comp and hit the PageDown key on your keyboard to advance one frame past the end, and in the Y Rotation, make it 1x360.

To find the earth pictures just do a google image search for 'Earth Map', it should be one of the first results. Same thing for the clouds, just do a google image search for 'Could Map' there are a few of each, just pick your favourites.
