Does this effect still work with newer versions of CC (2020) ?? Followed this tutorial to a T 3 times now (and have done it before in the past) and all I'm getting is a white image at 8:46 instead of my image projected on the white solids

Can you use this technique to transition between two pieces of footage the same way? This tutorial uses jpegs. I'm just wondering.

Anyone having problems with a blurred image when they get to the stage when the image should be projected should check the light settings. My light as default came up as shadow diffusion at 311 px and it should be 0!!!

Hello Andrew
What an awesome Tutorial! You are great. I have a problem just in the begining. After doing the grids (vanishing Points) I can't project the image in the grids, even doing all correctly. I'm using AE CS5.5. Can you help me figure out the problem?

By the way, your imitation of Tom Cruise, especially the last part where you shout 'Manny get in the car, or you're gonna die!' actually sounds like Tom Cruise's voice!

Hi AK,
As usual awesome tutorial. I would also like to personally thank you for pretty much being my AE teacher over the past 18 months via this website. I'f started with Basic training and have incorporated many of the ideas and tuts in my projects for Nightlyfe TV. Still very much an amateur per say but, thank you for inspiring me.
Here is my humble version of this great project.
http://www.nightlyfetv.net/NightlyfeTV/theundergroundVideos.php?content=theundergroundtitle
added the car, the people, the sign, and had to manipulate the Camera projection in the underground pic since it was not a standard room with 4 walls.
cheers!

At 25:16 Andrew as a small white bar at the bottom of his field. He clicks and hits the tilda key and then it magically disappears.
I have that white bar too and I was wondering how exactly to get rid of it. Thanks.

I think it looks amazing, that one extra bit that would make it look more effective is the top sky layer becoming brighter and more exposed as it disappears, as when recording video footage from a light to dark area, the light blows out as it is adjusting to the darker footage.

Hey Andrew, I have a question that you could probably answer. I am trying to accomplish this effect, but with the camera moving towards the wall then going through. I have 3d rooms with the camera animated to pass through the wall into the next room. How would you go about adding the stuff inside the wall before the camera comes out the other side? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated, as I'm kind of at a standstill on this project.
Thanks, Cody

Hi folks, firstly, Andrew... you a friggen godsend! and secondly can anyone tell me if doing this same effect only with two pieces of footage (static) with the people moving in the frame is any different than this tutorial? Or is it doing everything exactly the same just with the different things at each level?

I've tried both the PS viewpoint and the camera projection for projects like theses. Which do you recommend as being the most effective. I know the viewpoint way has some seious camera and scaling issues. Would you say the control factor is more managable using the projection method?
Thanks again.

(the original was in 16:9, I don´t know why Youtube reconvert in 4:3)
And one more thing: A group of friends have a webserie, here in Spain, called "Malviviendo" ("Badliving"
, the website is: www.malviviendo.com, I do the making of and some support in postproduction of the two last episodes(there is only a guy for all postproduction), sometimes your tutorials save our lifes, thank you Andrew! By the way, some televisions like FOX (FOX Spain) are interest in Malviviendo, maybe you can see it in the future in the international tv. Ah, There is no subtittles for now, sorry, if you want to watch it I hope you know advanced Spanish, in the south we speak very close. Thaks for your time, sorry for my English, and long life for Videocopilot! Hasta otra!

Andrew,
You are a very talented person. I looked around for AE tutorials on the web before. No tutorials have ever impressed me as much as yours. Your tutorials are simply out of this world and your artistic vision is second to none.
It is funny watching TV because I see your ideas used a lot.
You are really just that good.

Hey Andrew, hey guys.
I'm just trying out this tutorial but a problem occured. From the moment of switching the Light Transmission to 100%, my image gets totally blurry. Well, in fact, it's out of focus and the only way to get it sharp is, to put it right on the same plane as the background. But by doing so, the whole concept of projection gets lost.
What I dont understand: Why is my image out of focus although the camera option of DOF is disabled? Even when I change the focal plane of the camera to the image plane it doesn't change.
Is there anyone here, who can help me getting out of this disaster?
best regards, thibor.

Hey Andrew, love this tut.
I was using a hires picture when attempting this tutorial, and when I used shadow projection the result came out all blurry. I tried a bunch of things, and what I discovered is that in Comp Settings, you have to go to Advanced and then Options, and change the Shadow Map Resolution to a high number. Just letting everybody know, let me know if this helps!

I discovered by mistake that if I change the fast preview fron OpenGL witch I normaly use to Adaptive resolution the shadows will show!!!.....Qestion! why does'nt the shadows show in OpenGL? is it a default on Adobe or an eror on my PC? ....sorry if my questions are stupid

ANDREW, ANDREW, ANDREW:
You SERIOUSLY don't know how shocked I was when i went on VCP today and fund this tutorial. I was literally going to try one of these myself this afternoon, and wham! you had a professional example to work off, I seriously couldn't believe it. I went around telling everyone in my class.
I'm actually designing a music video for my band (Zuluhotel) towards my Honors degree in Motion, it's got a sci-fi, anti technology/identity loss in computer civilization theme.
So far I've incorporated:
Basic training stuff (of course)
3D city
Vanishing point (god-sent)
Burning up particle guy
and now THIS tutorial!
Once again, I just want to thank you man, you don't understand. I wouldn't be where I am without VCP!
Thanks!
Wes,
Wellington, New Zealand.

After doing the tutorial 15 times over and over.. and still coming up with a blurry projection, I've figured out what's up..
In "light settings" check to make sure your shadow diffusion is ZERO (0) Pixels!!!
It isn't mentioned in the tutorial, but if you pause it right hen AK sets up the light it says zero. I changed mine to zero and all of a sudden everything's working perfectly
Great tutorial Andrew!

Dayum, I did notice you shut the video off.. :'(
I wish you could have a video below the tutorial of what you're saying, So I can see and read your lips to understand what you're saying. *shifty*
:p
It would help, But i'd understand if It's too much..

Hey, Andrew! First of all great tutorial! I've thought about this for a long time.
But here's a thing; Why not copy the camera from projection comp 1 to projection comp 2? Wouldn't this solve the issue of the comp's different speed?

Andrew,
I know you're using Windows 7 (same here!) anyways, HOW come It always has the loading sign when you playing a movie from quicktime even though its not really loading anything? Any comments? Regardless, love the new tutorial and love you what've done to your hair

Thanks Andrew! This was a great tutorial!
I always wanted to make this "earth-pan" shot. Combined with graves and dinosaurs and more fun stuff maybe.
Does it help to have less or foreground elements in the shots you're panning to/from?

Nice tutorial.
Hopefully people will use it for their own stuff this time instead of downloading the project, clicking the rendering button and post it on youtube saying its their work.

Andrew, your tutorials are really splendid! Was thinking last night to give you a shout and suggest a few ideas around future tutorials. So I'll just list them here right now and you can say 'sure' and do the shifty eye thing:
- Smallville tutorials to emulate all dem special super hero abilities like heat vision, super fast running, super high jumping, and others.
- Tutorial about a 'normal' moving character while everything around him is buzzing around at fast forward motion or slow motion as seen in the movie 21.
- End of the World tutorials like an atom bomb exploding over a city, tidal waves, or a meteorite smashing into earth and creating a shockwave.
The list goes on, but I'll stop here for now
I think in short, just a few tutorials to help the guys n' gals here create a few Heroes-like short movies. Now there's an idea! Perhaps you could host a competition on this site to see who creates the best super hero scene or something and give away something neat, like a Twitch/Riot Gear bundle or... something...
Anyways, keep up the GREAT work!
Take care

I have a question I would love to hear an answear to. It this effect possible to do with live footage? If so, how do you do it?
Taking the photos and the live footage from the same direction, then masking out the actors the first seconds, perhaps?

I always wanted to see your video with the tutorial, now it is come true !!
.
Also wanted to check if camera projections will work for the CC layers? In the sense if I apply CC Cylinder to a plane and will I be able to project on that? Will try that out anyway.

@ paul above:
Yes, you can do this same effect in nuke, and probably even better since nuke has a much sturdier 3D portion to it. The technique is the same however. Lining up layers to each other, offsetting them in z space, etc.
