I reached the point where you add the Starglow but here in my case the effect doesn't do anything on the "Particular" layer whatsoever. This is very strange. Why is that ?

It doesn`t work for me with the expressions in AE CC 2014

The particles are generated even the slider control speed isn`t above 500.

Do i have to change the expressions for the new version? Thanks for the great tutorial!!

That's what makes VC tutorials so awesome. He isn't one of those, "ok pull this leve, then push this button, blah, blah, blah." He teaches the reason behind it, what pulling those levers is actually doing, and puts you in a more of now that you've learned this, you know how to apply it to your own work kind of mentality. I learned more in a year from this guy than 10 years of watching other tuts. His format, style of teaching, and outside the box mentality is why VC is the best.

the jokes are *exactly* why i, along with most others, watch these tutorials. i have stopped tutorials on other websites halfway thru- sacrificing what i'm sure was valuable information- due to the fact they were so dry and tedious. i just can't stand listening to someone who sounds like ben stein on an eye drop commercial telling me to make 47 new solids in a 6 minute video. the jokes give these tutorials life, make them fun, and the result is i learn more because i'm actually *enjoying* the experience. keep at it, andrew. ignore the nay-sayers. you rock.

p.s. the jokes are *mostly* funny

Yeah I definitely agree with D1g1Kd, its much better than someone who just mumbles as they go on. Most videos I fall asleep halfway through just listening but these are actually entertaining. I don't get how you could actually be annoyed by the jokes, its not as if he's making the worlds stupidest jokes or anything like that.

Hi! Another Great tutorial! amazing!

But I have a problem...
I'm trying to aply this technique not on a text, but on a Rectangular solid... The problem is that the anchor point of the solid is at the bottom of it...and when I try to link the movement of rotation of the solid, with the rotation of the particular effect, it doesn't rotates right, becouse the anchor point of the particular effect is at middle of the emission of particular....

I hope we can resolve it! thanks for everything

You can use the pan behind tool to move the anchor point to the center of the solid and that should fix your problem.

I just have a little problem to resolve...I'd like to do this tutorial, but not with a object being moved by it's POSITION, instead, I want a Rectangular object doing a 360 degree movement...with the anchor point at the bottom of it...

The problem is that the Trapcode particular doesn't have option to change the position of the anchor point... and when I link the Z Rotation of particular with Z rotation of the rectangular.... Thanks !

Okay, so, if you want to get the products to work in after effects, they don't just magically appear. What you do, is when you open after effects, go to "File," then click on "Import." Now, find the folder with your things (Riot Gear, Evolution) and click on the button labelled "Import Folder." Now your set and can drag the things into the comp. Audio is the same as video except you can't see it. Hope this was helpful!

To get a darker interface color (or lighter) just go to Edit > Preferences > User Interface Colors and adjust to your liking. Hope that helped!

@ Dboy - You may not be able to see the particles because your timer is at 0. Scrub across the timeline to see your particles. This is because at 0, nothing has yet been emitted.

This effect just gets me really angry. When I click away sometimes, or I go to edit something (and I KNOW I didn't click on something that I wasn't supposed to), the particles don't emit anymore. So forget this effect. But overall, good job creating it. 4*s.

Thanks for showing us this technique. A cool thing I found to add, is if you put the text in the center of the frame, and have the particles die off before they reach the edge, you can precompose the layers and add some nice secondary motion by animating the position of the precomp. I've got a 4 word line of text where each word has this effect on it, and they all start out in the center of the line and grow out.

Ok. So I know this might sound like an unintelligent question but when I try to use particular. My particles don't show up at all. I am not a pro, but I think this is a great turorial, except for one thing. That he is using that trapcode>particular effect even though it is not standard and you have to purchase it. I have tried using particle world, as he mentions, but he doesn't say how to use it, and I think, it is comletely different from the other effect, and I would be very grateful, if he showed how to use that effect in this tutorial...THANKS

Ivan beat me to it, but yep he's right. This is the same effect used in Alien Vs Predator. I was watching the intro for the AVP on xbox live and had to do a double take. Your influence is everywhere man! Keep it up!

hey awesome tutorial i have being delving around the text tutorials and with this i found that instead of the glow you used i used the lightsaber glow from your lightsaber v2 tutorial but its a bit too intense so i just turned the glow down a bit it makes a realy cool effect.

Hey AK, this is my first post but I have been watching you tutorials for a week now, I just finished watching ALL of them. Something cool you can do with this effect is have the particles come on as the camera moves. Depending on the speed of the camera as it flies around in a title sequence the particles can come on and leave a streak from where the camera was to where it is going...just a thought...

I did the project and I also pre compose the text and now I can't change the text, HOw can I change the text after working with the other one. I don't want to go back and start all over again with other text is there a way I can just change the setting already saved on the pre compose text to the new one.

The only thing I'm wondering is how to move the text around. The expressions lock up the camera position, so you can fly the camera around. So how do you fly the camera around the text after the first particle effects happens? Does anyone know what I mean?

Dear Andrew,
These are some great tutorials and by watching them i have leanred more about after effects than i have just through tinkering. They provide indepth information and at sometimes the good laugh.
I just have one concern.
I know you are trying to sell your products and all but it would be greatly appriciated if you sticked to the built in components of after effects as much as possible.

Awesome tutorial. I really like this effect. I noticed that if you don't precompose the text then the particle emmiter doesn't line up with the text properly. Although you can add the difference in position to the appropriate expression but you get into trouble again if you do the text rotation. Easier to pre-compose. =]

thanx a lot man... thanx to this tut i actually got to understand expression! i did a pretty cool fx by putting that code and changing it a bit, instead of using a particle i wrote wiggle and when the speed goes up to x value the wiggle increases and for the rest the wiggle stays (0,0)

You can use a layer as an emitter instead of a box , set the layer RGB usage to RGB - size,vel,rot!!

Amazing, I had no idea you could manipulate particles like that in After Effects.

You know Andrew, there's a lot more to learn from your tutorials than meets the eye. For instance, I learned about pressing U to show animated variables as well as control clicking to change keyframe types both from this tutorial and those alone greatly speed up my workflow. I can't thank you enough, but I hope my future purchase of some of your products will make do.

Hey, great work you guys.
I saw your website a few days ago and i'm already a big fan of yours.
I made my personal intro based on your tutorial of video copilot turning into particles, it's great, but there's a red cross that appears in the middle of the screen. It's from the particular layer I think.
How can I shut it down? Even after exporting to .avi it steal remains there...
Another question, when I export that video to .avi in the best quality it doesn't have so much quality in the .avi file. It's a litle pixelized. What's your suggestion?

I've set it up as a DVD Menu BG. All elements come from VC. Water effect is 3 layers of ink flows from Riot Gear with shine. Animated arrows from Evolution point to speed effect event revealing the MWP logo. Grunge texture from Riot Gear. Sound FX from VC SFX collection.

It can be done with AE's default particle system (I have done it) If I get a chance I'll upload the project (CS3) somewhere so you can see what the settings are.

It's not 100% perfectly replicated, but it works and looks good still.

It seems to me that Particular reacts to the audio peak a frame too late... so I pre-compose the comp, turn off the audio in the pre-comp, re-add the audio track and slip it forward a frame... this way the visual matches the beat perfectly.

Definitly I dont work without it, the best particle engine for AE worth the cash if you use it, having said that sometime depending on project cost and time CC particle world (inbuilt with AE) with a few tweaks and expressions can be made to do great things as well.

In Windows, look under edit, preferences, user interface colors. In Mac, under After Effects, preferences, user interface colors, I believe.

Nice tutorial. I'm trying to learn so I can use it for some of my club's presentation. But there is some problem I always encounter. The expressions I type keep "breaking up". The particular suddenly stops following the expression and keeps emitting particles. Then I have to retype it again. Then breaks up again. HOw can i solve this?

Brillant idea!
This can be used to do some really nice effects on spatial engine gaining speed and when they reach a certain speed they start emiting partciles and changing their aspect.
Talking about speed, guyz look at the speed at it Andrew is manipulating and working with AE tools and the smart youse of shortcuts keyboard.

ahh hey, another suggestion for using the speed expression is you could film a passenger bus and once it hits a certain speed, say 50 MPH, a bomb activates and the bus has to stay going at least 50 MPH or the bus explodes.

Some of the last tutorials have been awesome but they didnt have it all or I didnt think I would use them or slightly forgetable. But this tutorial Andrew blew me away. This is one of my favorite video copilot tutorials by far. We love you, we wouldnt know what to do without too.

Great stuff as usual! But wouldn't it be more physically accurate to use the actual acceleration of the layer to drive the emission rate of the particles, rather than checking if the speed exceeds a certain value?

I haven't used AE much yet, but if it doesn't offer an easy expression to obtain the acceleration (like "layer.position.acceleration" or something like that), you could easily approximate it by subtracting the speed at the previous frame from the speed at the current frame.

This tut, and the previous ones, was one of the ebst tutorials I've seen on VCP

Just a tip to you and/or the viewers.

If you're tired of the wiggle effect. Try using Motion sketch!
Motion sketch can either capture the movement of your mouse, or you can pickwhip a real-footage that is tracked, to the motion sketch null, and voila! YOu've got reallife movement!!
