63. Smoke Screen
April 09, 2008
• Composite and animate smoke elements in 3D space
• Create a custom particle map and write new expressions
Additional Tutorial Notes:
UPDATE: The Texture element is indeed from the Evolution collection and not the Riot Gear one as stated. The project file contains the Smoke Element, the project file has been excluded so that you can experiment.

You can use free photoshop cloud brushes to create the smoke later. Check out Deviant Art for some freebies. You could also find a picture with clouds and borrow one of the elements.

Andrew,

Thank you so much for all of your hard work. Between your excellent products to your great tutorials this is a complete stop for learning After Effects! I now have every product except for clouds and can honestly say that I have used the products more than I thought I would. You have saved my but on time crunches many times.

by Qbay3000 04/09/2008
love the tutorial but where is that smoke layer?
by Bob Slie 04/09/2008
Thomas, check the project link above for the smoke element.

Andrew,
Thanks so much for this valuable training. As an owner of many of your products, I'd like to encourage everyone to buy them as well. They are just as useful as the high dollar plug-ins that Andrew uses. Great tutorial and I love the humorous approach. BTW, now I know who broke my window. I'm sending the cops!
by noone 04/09/2008
amazing tutorial, i'm using the technique in a project right now, and i really needed some better looking smoke.

Adobe just launched http://tv.adobe.com/ and I can't believe that they didn't license some of your content for use on their site. You tutorials really show the power of AE especially when coupled with creativity as you did with this tutorial. Thanks again for all the time you have invested in increasing the knowledge pool when it comes to video effects.

by Khai Tran 04/09/2008
Hey Andrew,

I am a huge fan, to start off. I have a question regarding your tutorial as i was watching it. You know how some people use stock footage as a luma matte, for example, an ink drop. can you create a an evolving clouds, as you did in this tutorial, as a luma matte for a "revealing mask" effect? i hope this question wasn't too confusing.
by Thomas 04/09/2008

And I want to advise you one of the best FREE(!) plugin for 3D studio Max. It calls DustDevil(http://www.maxplugins.de/r6_files/blurbeta/dustdevil.zip)
It will helps you to create come nice custom volumetric smoke and clouds footages like this:

Not sure if you read these, but why do you have to post these tutorials? They are amazing and its giving me a hard time to stand out from the rest of the AE User field.

In my newest video (I haven't released yet) I have a smokey foreground. And well, I gotta scratch that now because the people reviewing it will just call me a "AndrewKramer" wannabe. Aargh, why do you have to be soo amazing... :-\

Oh well, good tutorials nonetheless.

by Roentgene 04/11/2008
Hey Sir Andrew, great tutorial huh. Anyway I'm just a beginner in Adobe After Effects. I have a question for you anyway. What's the difference in using After Effects CS3 and After Effects 7. In your Basic training you are using CS3, but most of your tutorial you are using AE7. Does it make difference in memory usage, like previewing in AE7 faster than in CS3, or AE7 is stable than CS3?

And also why is it hard to do previews on AE compared to video editing programs like pinnacle studio, where you can easily preview your work in realtime from beginning to end. It's hard to preview a composition with more than 1minute length in AE. Ows, maybe this question can be answered by Adobe, but I would like to hear your opinion bout that also.

Hey Andrew, thanks for all of your tutorials. With any luck, the knowledge you've shared with me will be helping me in the near future to land a job doing video work. If it does, I'll be plunking down some cash to buy more of your fine products! (Payback isn't always a _____)
Thanks again!
by Alex Haynes 04/11/2008
Andrew Kramer with the VideoCopilot Crew pretty much made After Effects! "VCP After Effects" is what is should be called!
by Laurence 04/11/2008
Hi, seen your tutorials for a while, and absolutly loved this one, but I am thinking about getting the student version of AE, will your plugins + presets work the same? (Version CS3)

Thanks
by louis 04/11/2008
hey andrew, another great tutorial
you know you and sam loya should think about making a feature/short film or something for video-copilot.net
it would be great, you could use it as an advert for a plug-in or a promo for the site.
by Evyatar Alush 04/11/2008
Great tutorial Andrew, just like all your other tutorials.

I am just a beginner, but here is what I came up with after watching your tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LN50hF6_S8U
I know it's not perfect(and not even close to be), but it's something.

In this video I used 3 different clouds that I created in photoshop.

Thanks for all your great tutorials,
Evyatar,
Israel.

by Cameron 04/11/2008
really nice tutorial
by Jens 04/12/2008
Nice one Andrew. Now I see how they MIGHT have done the effect in X-men when they use 'Cerebro' to track people... Smoke and particles (in that case, people) flying towards you.

Thanks.

I have a problem Andrew, maybe you can send me a email or something regarding the resolve of it
In After Effects, after I set every layer 3D and Create a New camera ,, 50 mm preset uaually) when i click on that image that is suppose to give me the ,,Orbit Camera Tool'' and,, Track Z'' etc...it doesn't pop up anything..i just click on it and nothing happens
I also have another problem with the camera when parenting to a Null Object, when I click on the Null and move it along, it doesn't give me immmediate results ...like how i'm draging it....it just tells me that i'm draging it..when i'm finished draging it..it puts it in the place where I drag it...so i can't really see where i drag it. I hope you understand...I think i'll make a youtube video with my problem since no one seems to help me on it.
My computer is high-end...Q6600 Processor...good motherboard.GPu..etc...but some things just won't work right
I have A3 7 Professional

Thanks

As per usual; great info. Any chance of some future tutorials that will include some Trapcode Form? Maybe something that covers some basic functions of Form and the advantages of using it instead of Particular for certain scenarios. That would be awesomeness. Thanks for all the great work.

Great tutorial,

but.... It would have been nice to know that I would have to have the Trapcode Particular effect

Is there an easy way to get this because I'm a poor college student unfortunately I don't have the bucks to lay down on this awesome effect. I did a quick Google search and just the particular effect is over $280 - any suggestions for free or cheaper replacements

Hey Rey, regarding smokey text;
maybe try using a blocky font in white and track/luma matte it to see through to the smoke Andrew demonstrated creating in this tutorial.
Could slightly rotate a copy of the smoke in 3D and bring it up through the text layer ( forward on z axis) to smother the letters, increasing opacity of rising smoke and increasing blur on text. Have not tried it though ;-]

Greatest tutorials i've ever seen. Andrew, im waiting for some tricky one. Like, make a 3D map in MAX (a box on a flat eq) and use it in AE. For example, want to see some particules bounced on the box and drop on the flat randomly. A real 3D in AE:)) Thx 4 your great job.
