TUTORIAL NOTES:
Before applying Sure Target 1.5, the Null and Target must be 3D first.
Auto-Rotate feature is tied to the rotation of a layer but not the orientation. Please manually adjust the XYZ rotation in the transform settings for each layer by hitting R.

There are issues with the expresions, everytime I try to add the sure target pluggin or version1.5 the alert show me at least 5 errors.

trying to put a simulated plane prop i made in layers and alfa channel to attach to a live action video for a movie to simulate a prop in motion blur but having trouble placing it to the location

I had the problem that autorotate wasn't working. Make sure that you're null object is a 3D object! Things won't rotate otherwise!

If you have problems with the "auto rotate" u just did a little step maybe wrong like me...
I tried a little test with 2 Text-Layers and tried to get auto rotate to work and failed! - Because i was just rotating my text-layers wrong, because there are 2 options to rotate your text-layer "Orientation" and "X/Y/C-Rotation" - if you rotate your layer with "orientation" the auto rotate wont work! - if you rotate your layer with "X/Y/C-Rotation" the Auto Rotate works like a charm
Hope this helps someone out there!

Hello!!!! I'd like to say this video was very helpful, but I'm having a problem since I didn't see you steps to insert more text after "auto rotate". I would like to know how I transition my text to rest for a little while to read because my "auto rotate" moves right away into "fall off" and i just want it to stop for a sec then spin off. I also want to know how to transition each new text layer to behave the same as it's previous layers. Please help! Thank you!

When I apply the T1 and T2 effects, the sure target text jumps to the right, across the composition frame. I can't move it back to the middle of the composition area.

I've tried clicking on the null object, then P key, then changing the positioning. The positioning is pink and fixed.

I've replayed this tutorial over and over to see what I may have missed. But, I'm doing everything he's doing.

After I put the text layers on the TARGET LAYERS (Sure Target text to Target 1, Auto Rotate text to Target 2 ) on the Null layer, I then set my keyframes on Sure Target to 1 and then a second later to 2 but the text layers don't reposition on keyframe 2 as in the video. What am I missing?

I was trying to fix the autorotate feature that wasn't working for me (and for some other guys in this post too) so the way to fix it IS deleting your comp, creating it again and making sure all your layers are 3D (including the NULL) before applying it.

Hey VideoCopilot iv'e been trying to do this effect and i can't seem to get it right! now I knew if I asked you, you would be able do a tutorial or maybe just give us a email. This effect is where a square goes around the video then locks on to something and flashes basically like a target locator, if you can help that would be great!!

Hello, I have began using your tutorials a few days ago, but I have encountered a problem. I have used your tutorials that are published using Adobe After Effects Cs3, while I primarily use Cs5. I have not found too many problems except for one when you open the effect options between "reset" and "About," there are is no "options" link there for Adobe After Effects cs5. Thanks! @Kamil, it's probably because your changing the ORIENTATION of the object/text, and not the rotation, very easy mistake, happened to me for a while. Go into the layer and adjust the ROTATION.

im a big fan like everyone here, i love your animations and have bought some of your stuff. everything that i try works great and yea. but i still got a small problem. when i am finished with my animations i cant find any sounds. its ok with explosions and gun shots. but in this toturial i cant find any "swish" sounds. when the camera moves fast and every thing gets blury. it would be cool with a swosh sound. you know, air passing the camera fast. is it any sites that you use or do you got a produckt?

I got the same bug as that last comment. I think I narrowed it down a little though. If you place your items in 3d space before you apply the camera and null (and sure target to the null) then it all goes well - as per the video. If you however, have the camera, null and sure target already applied, create a new item and rotate it in custom view before applying it to sure target - it only follows position and z rotation. X and Y are ignored. Not sure why and it doesn't occur 100% of the time.
Solution. Delete Null and Camera. Remove Rotation from problematic angles. Re-apply camera and null, link them to your suretargets (including your new one)- then change your rotation. For some reason this order works no problem - apply suretarget and THEN rotate. Watch the camera in custom view to make sure.

I have some bug, he only focus on the layer's zrotation if i edit the x rotation or y rotation he ignores it and the camara doesnt move infront the layer

Hi,I understand by the comments that your name is Andrew,so Andrew I just wanted to thank you for these tutorials, I just Got AE less than 4 days ago and I didn't know it was this practical once I watched your tutorials.My friends said this was a hard software to work with, and of course it looks hard when you see it for the first time and have no idea what the hell the buttons do or represent, but your tutorials make it so easy to create something that looks amazing. So i was able to put the background with particles. Hope you will help me out

It sounds like you applied suretarget to your null before making it a 3D layer. This means that the expressions for y and x rotation won't be appllied. Always make your null 3D first.

I find an easy solution for autofocus is to simply add an expression to the cameras focus distance. I simply subtract the focus distance from the camera's z position and it works a treat for me.

I'm not a coder, but would it be possible to integrate something like this and make it keyframeable between targets like the SureTarget? You could even have a checkbox that locks it to the current SureTarget.

I'm not a coder, but would it be possible to integrate something like this and make it keyframeable between targets like the SureTarget? You could even have a checkbox that locks it to the current SureTarget.

Andrew, Your tutorials are the best, the effects pack here on this site has made learning how to use after effects extremely easy compared to other tutorials that I have viewed.
I just don't know how to thank you enough, the first actual tutorial after the basics was of course the lightsaber tutorial as everyone wants to know how it was done.
I did get frustrated with the masking and moving, but it was so much easier with the effects preset.
I did try to use tracking and parenting to help with the movement, and it did work a little. so proof there that I have learned something in the 2 days of using your tutorials and after effects.

Thanks Doogle, I scrolled down to your comment about only the Z rotation working and having to copy and paste it to Y and X rotations and then changing some of the properties and it fixed it up nicely!

Hi! First I'd like to say that your tuts is the sh*t! just love em'. But I have a problem, when I set the slider the text slides sideways, so half of the text gets outside the picture. Plz help!

Hi Andrew. I´m from Venezuela. I´ve been using your presets and they are awesome. Thanks a lot and congratulations to the Video Copilot team. Today i started work with Sure Target 1.5.1. and i´m having some problems. It seems like the preset lost his auto rotate parameter and every text goes out of the frame with no apparent reason . By the way, i´m using is a intel based iMac with AF CS4. Thanx again, sorry for my english

Hi, I've been working through this tutorial as I'm wanting to use this effect for a DVD menu, but the AutoRotate only effected the Z axis. I had to copy and paste the code onto the X and Y rotations and modify the properties a little to get it to work, is this a known problem?

He's talking about the Comp from the previous tutorial (#82) Louis. By missing settings, the only thing that would be missing is Sure Target settings if you have an older version of Sure Target installed. Everything else is standard.

For anyone that was having trouble with the auto-rotate (like i was for hours) "ngambles" on the forum pointed out that the null object must be a 3d layer before you apply the sure target to it. He is my new hero. Hope that helps people like it helped me.

There is a problem with the German version. The check box under the easetargets-option is called "Kontrollkästchen" there, but somehow int the expressions the a-Umlaut in that word was replaced by the "per-mille-character" (‰. So this has to be manually fixed once in the expression at "Position" and twice in the expressions at "X-Drehung", "Y-Drehung" and "Z-Drehung".
But after that it works fine, thanks!

One thing, though, I've noticed what seems to be a bug, or maybe it's just me. I'm following the original SureTarget tutorial but I'm using the new version of the preset and for whatever reason when I set the keyframes to Easy Ease (not using the EaseTargets checkbox, but regular AE easy ease) between the first and second keyframe (which are both set to 1) the position of the null jumps from my text's position back to the center of the comp. It does this every few frames and only lasts 1 or 2 frames, so it's like this quick jump effect and I don't like it. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Please, any help would be appreciated.

Hey Marc Samir,
you have to modify the anchor point of the null not the text. just select the null/transform/anchor point and mess around with that until you find something you like. Hope that helps

I have a little problem, I am using AE CS4 and when i apply the ST 1.5.1 to the Null object and define the first 2 targets as un the tutorial, the words go out of the scene and when i try to move them back to scene only one of them is movable but the other one can't move, all the layers is 3D. what is the solution to this problem?

Im trying the sureTarget preset .. but it isnt working ok. When I select T1 then T2, T3, .. get the same name... as T1. I dont see this happening in your tut.video. This makes the Null object move while tweening between two compositions. Also the auto rotate doesnt work for me.. Im working with AE CS3.

First and foremost, I want to say thank you (millions of times) to Andrew. I'm a beginner and your tutorials really really help. My question is how do you install this preset that I am commenting on? I have a macintosh. I have After Effects CS4. Your tutorial, shows how to do it for a PC. I put the "video copilot" folder in my Adobe Bridge, inside the "presets" folder, but when I open up CS4 it doesn't show in the "effects and presets" area. Therefore, I cannot apple the "SureTarget" effect. Any recommendations? Thanks for all of your help and guidance!

andrew..can you also teach us how to fix this problem? i dont know what causes this but it says that " after effects cant continue: sorry after aeffects has crashed................ " then it will ask me to save the project first..then when i try to open it.. i wouldnt but will prompt to that....another thing..i saved my project twice.. i made this part 1.. and no errors.. now that i have made some modifications i saved the project to another file then it again promted.. so i thought of opening the project that didnt crash. but it says there instead 'AFTER EFFECTS ERROR ;"Missing data in file. (33::4)".. PLEASE HELP

i've encountered a problem whilst following your energetic titles tutorial. try'd to use the 3D falloff pre-set to animate between titles, however, i find that the 3D falloff discards the transparency of the layers below it. Any ideas of why this is?

I just used ST1.5 on a series of 18 Award modules. After a brief ramp up period, I was off and running. I found it helpful to start out with a base project that had keyframes for 12 targets with 1 sec moves and holds to lay in targets and then tweak them to the proper timing. ST1.5 saved me HUGE time in this project and made revisions and tweaks a no-brainer.

I was able to download your presets onto my mac, but I was not able to get them to work with my CS3 After Effects program for some reason. I was able to do it before. What could I be doing wrong?

Awesome, but one problem. I'm still working with 6.5 as my budget isn't big time just yet. When you mentioned the versions it works with you started at 7. Does that mean 6.5 is not included in the updated version?

First Sure Target is a crazy nice preset that makes life in 3D so easy.
Second thanks for putting all the presets into one handy zip file. I was thinking about a week ago that I should go collect the rest of the presets and get them up and running. Now that took me all of 30 seconds.

I was using the Sure Target from the previous tutorial and it was going to incredibly useful for my short turnaround project. However, I was in need of multiple targets and was actually looking up how to edit the code myself. Lo and behold, you've updated the Sure Target just in the nick of time. Thanks! Once again, you'll be saving me time. In a nutshell, thanks for all the tutorials. You make even a beginner at After Effects look like more professional.

I installed the preset on 2 machines, works great on my G5, but my Mac Book Pro won't AutoRotate on the X or Y axis, only the Z axis.

Awesome, awesome preset.
I had some trouble getting it to work properly at first - It appears as though it may be crucial to do things (assigning targets, clicking the appropriate check boxes, etc.) in the exact order that Andrew does in the tutorials. When I did things slightly out of order, the results were undesirable.
