Andrew Kramer, there is an effect like this in Vacancy, but its a shot of the camera going away from the two main actors, then all of a sudden its a shot of the camera pulling away from the TV and u see a guy watching the two actors through a TV. Did they just have two camera man doing this at the same time, then cutting and stuff in post?
by Sergey 10/15/2007
Really cool idea and very simple.

by 17th Letter Films 10/15/2007
Awesome! I too, was thinking, I wonder if you could create a shot where the glass is shot (and have a bullet hole) and then you zoom through it to the driver. Great tutorial, I'm sure it has other uses too. (Maybe go through a television that's turned off?)
by kelley muro 10/15/2007
Was that hose really duct-taped to a radio? Or was it in the exhaust pipe?

by Trevor 10/15/2007
That was so funny, when you said how you heard that people's tutorials were stopping in the middle, and you understand their frustration. And then you say, "So, I'll tell you how to fix it at the end of the tutorial!"

PRICELESS. I was laughing so hard.
by ken 10/15/2007

Now just to get a jib, dolly, and cool camera, and I can shoot some good stuff.

I wonder if a webcam, skateboard and a broom stick handle would work? Hmm.
by greydogfilms 10/15/2007

What do you think about making a section next to the comments where people can post their tries at the tutorial. Like a small pic/frame/thumbnail of the attempt that links to a youtube video.

I guess it's just to post it as a link in the comments but i think there will be more people posting if they get more attention.

Thx alot for the tutorials!!!

Aaaaw. Why'de you have to go and make same cry?

Great tutorial Andrew. However, didn't you say that you were going to explain the "quick fix" for the playback problem in the end? I've been having it with the 3D Studio MAX tutorial (the text one). The problem really isn't that it won't play, its that when I try to use the seeker, it never takes me to the place I need. It just goes like a few minutes ahead from the place I was at . Sometimes it happens somtimes it doesn't. Weird.

Keep up the awstacular (awsome & spectacular) work Andrew .
by Ron 10/16/2007
Andrew you kill me man!!. within the first 1minute of this video I could not stop laughing about the " not what looks like comment" Ohh Sam the acting in this video is superb.

by Russ 10/16/2007
Great tutorial, Andrew! I think that the gradient and by changing the transfer mode of your reflection to multiply made the window look tinted while the driver's side is plainly clear. You may have started a new fad. I think I'm going to get half my car tinted and put rims on just the passenger side! Who am I to pick apart a free tutorial from the man who inspired me to learn after effects without picking up a book!
by Mace 10/16/2007
Another great one.

I noticed that you were using what looked to be a Kessler Crane in the shoot. How do you like it?

Keep 'em coming!

That hose in the window doesn't say antenna... it says Sam is trying to suffocate himself by inhaling the car's exhaust through the hose. You must be putting him through a lot of stress to make him go to that extreme.

I think you forgot to explain how to fix the video tutorials playing halfway.

I'm not sure if you fixed some of the older videos but there were some that didn't play a few months ago when I discovered your site (looking at your earlier videos). I had to make a mock page with your video file and put in the link of the flv file. I can't remember which part of the code was missing or if you addressed the issue.

Great tutorials Andrew and team.
by Aharon Rabinowitz 10/16/2007
Outstanding. My wife is a vegetarian, and we rarely cook meat. I didn't have a meat tenderizer the last time I was making a meaty dinner. Will this tutorial help with that too?

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for all your work in making these tutorials. They're great, and I'm a signed-up-bought-the-DVDs member of the fan club!

One thing - please can you include some more description of the keypresses that you're using (shift/control/alt) etc., or tips with the mouse to help us newbies to learn: for example in this tutorial when you move the different bits of the motion tracker targets, or when you use the mask creation pen tools.

Keep up the great work,
Sam W

by Steve 10/17/2007
Wow those spacebar to move the vertex and F5 to reveal snapshot tips will come in handy down the road.
It's nice to see how you set up your shots -- more often than not I find myself limited by ending up with difficult footage more-so than in post-production from lack of knowledge within After Effects.

Hey, this is so radical. I own all your stuff and it has helped me immensely.

Could you make a tutorial on breaking glass for like, when a guy gets tossed out a window, or someone shoots up some glass? The basic idea is fairly easy, yet that 'realistic touch' eludes me..

Thanks, God bless you!

Why use your after effects 7.0 and not cs3?
I am thinking of change to the cs3, but since you do not change, I think it is major the 7.0.
What is the difference with cs3?

This is a really cool tutorial. Liked it alot.

I didn't red thru the bazillion responses on the thread here, so I don't know if anyone commented on this yet, but I had a question about the window on the drivers side of the shot.

The one you comp in on the passenger side is darkly tinted like the back windows, yet when we zoom through the passenger front window to see Sam enjoying a CO cocktail, the front drivers side window is not tinted at all.

Its a small and annoying question I know, but one that I thought was worth asking. Why did you go with the heavy tint on the passenger side but leave the drivers side untinted? Lighting reasons? To just have that "whats inside?" look to the vehicle before it goes in the window?

Just curious. One small thing that maybe would sell the shot just a bit even more, although it looks great as always.

Tnx AK, Keep on rockin' in the free world.

by Connor 10/22/2007
Hey Andrew.

Just quickly, would it be possible to make a 3d window? So instead of it just going through and distorting a little, you actually went through a 3d glass window and then got to poor old Sam?

Connor.

Hey nice, i've got a great idea for a new product.

i was looking at your store and i found something i liked which is in the riot gear video, but you dont seem to sell it.

so here's my idea why dont you make another sound effects cd with the orchestra guys singing, i think that would be great i'd definitely buy it.

love ryan

jvlive i just did something very simliar to that commercial using 3ds max and after effects

and it was all inspired by andrews, cruise control and the magic glass tutorials .. it was 100% inspired by andrews tuts but 100% different looking
that how these tutorials should be used .. to inspire . not to mask out sams face and put your own and add it to your demo reel
by DIDDY 10/24/2007
WOW UR AMAZING LOVE THE TUTORIALS
by Shero 10/24/2007
Kiera Says
"Good tutorial... but there's one thing missed - a reflection of the guy in the backview mirror! It has to be changed too )))) ooops"

I think u dont know much about Video Editing because that is the whole point not to see the cameraman. Oopsy
by Darby 10/24/2007
Instead of using the value graph to match the speed of the scaling after the tracking data, why not use the loopOut("continue") expression on the scale property? This will maintain the same rate of change precisely. This can also be handy for applied tracker data, but the object must be moving at a relatively constant velocity as loopOut("continue") uses the last known rate of change of the property.
by Talhah 10/24/2007
The past had Newton and Einstein. We got Andrew Kramer. We got the better deal
by WiRXMAN 10/24/2007
I dont think the reflection comment meant that they were saying to add the cameraman. It sounded to me like Kiera was saying to add a reflection of Sam in one of the mirrors??

It you mean the rearview mirror that is attached to the windshield, I dont think so because you barely get to see anything in the rearview mirror at the end of the shot, and the angle wouldnt show Sam in it anyways from that point of view.

Same thing goes from the drivers side mirror, the angle doesnt work at this point of view to reflect him.

Not sure if it was the wording the Kiera used and is confusing us to what was meant?

In response to Gopal Balaji:
"...shorcut to make the comp window to full screen."

It is the tilde key. The squiggly key to the left of the number one at the top of your keyboard. This key here ~

Hope that helps.

Very cool tutorial!!!
I'm a big fan of you and your work. I'll... I know you next tutorial will be as great as the others.

I have a big question to you, Andrew Kramer:
I'm working on a movie project and I want to make this very cool "black/white with much contrast"-effect like in the movie "Renaissance" (watch the trailer here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh7s32XRScQ
There is a very cool comic-effect in "A Scanner Darkly" too.

Please, make a tutorial how to make such cool comic-effects.

Your biggest fan
Danube!!!!
