Lord and Master. Hey Andrew I am glad to get in one of the early comments on this tutorial.
Awesome inspiring tutorial. I have been seeking out more tutorials integrating 3D Max and AE. I will get more in the upcoming DVD, but this will definitely take care of my fix for GFX and VFX.

by peter 03/17/2008
@ Warti
Cinema 4d can generate depth maps. In the multi-pass settings you can enable depth. You then need to set up the Target distance in the depth tab of your camera.
And yes you should be able to use the RPF and RLA formats, though I have never actually tried that myself.

Hi Andrew,
nice tutorial!
May I dare to give you a tip?
It's way faster in MAX to create a box and add a SHELL modifier with a certain inner Amount, than create all these boxes.

no offence

a fascinating tutorial. thanks a lot for this software mix. greetings from Holland
by Renker Amantéa 03/17/2008
andreww =DDD
nice tutorial ;)
one way easier to make the hall is simple create a box and put the modifier "normal" on it. If you want to change the material of the walls, ground , etc.. tranform the object into editable poly and in the modifier panel you select "face" and select the walls faces (example) and define a "material number"
when you create a new material you choose "multi map"..there Im sure you can figure out! =]

now i have a question about your productions...
what plugin or resorce you use to put HDV into after effects????

by Andrew Lee 03/17/2008
I've been using Max, for basic modelling, since version 1 and to be honest, I learned some stuff from this tutorial, so thanks for that. These tutorials get more impressive every time a new one comes out and it would be a sad day indeed if you ever stopped, so keep them coming. When I purchased Twitch a few days ago, I wondered how the vines were done and now I know. Now I'm going to try to produce a far more complex version, just because I have all the time in the world (no deadlines).

Long may Andrew Kramer and VideoCopilot.net reign.

For Warti and other interested

Oh and peter
"And yes you should be able to use the RPF and RLA formats, though I have never actually tried that myself."

I don't think RLA or RPF sequences will load into AE like PNG files do or for that matter even be recognised by AE. Then you can always convert them to PNG later.
by Cyclops 03/17/2008
It's perfect!

Thanks Andrew, for brazil!
by Alex 03/17/2008
Great Tutorial! Looks totally awesome! I have one question: how did you get all the png files in one big sequence? I got like 100 loose png files, so how can you put them together?

Thankyou so much.

I shake the finger of disproval at thoses who are requesting Andrew to change his 3ds/AE tutorials to keep those with cinema 4d happy - Give the guy a break people! If Andrew is using 3DS then it is for a good reason - like the fact that it's industry standard in most countries.

another good way to tile textures in photoshop is to take the same image and use Filter>Other>Offset...

if you do this with wrapping edges, you can then do some cloning on the unmatched edges and it all works perfect.

by Lee 03/17/2008
Thanks to your free tutorials I have now purchased one of your DVD tutorials sets. The free ones really showed me the awesome quality I would be getting with the paid ones and totaly sold me on the decision to buy.

Thank you so much for integrating 3ds Max, After Effects, and Photoshop all in one tutorial. I use these apps on a regular basis and seeing how professionals integrate them into each other makes the learning process that much more beneficial. I hope you do more 3ds Max/AE integration. Most VFX works uses multiple apps to achieve a good result not just one app.

Keep the VFX tutorials coming man, awesome job! If you release some AE/3ds Max VFX intgrated tutorials for purchase I'd definitely pick that up!
by Jeff 03/17/2008
I wish I understood 1 second of the 3D max stuff. I'm going to rewatch it again and try to pick up on some things. I really need to start learning the 3D stuff. Keep them coming, I love seeing how it's done.

Hi, thanks for yet another amazing tutorial. I'm using Cinema 4D and got it working almost perfectly! I think I'll start uploading all the little clips I've made to my website soon

The only thing I had trouble with was the Z-depth bit, but I found that I can get that working by enabling the depth of field on my camera and then get a seperate file rendered with only z-depth data using the multipass rendering
by f1a5h84ck 03/18/2008
Andrew, you've said that "there is no way to do that in AE", but using Trapcode 3dStroke and ReVision ShadeShape you can achieve a similar effects... :)

Hey Andrew!
Thanks for the sweet tutorial. These vines are something I've been dying to play with for ages! Can you possibly make a quick tutorial on how you can achieve the same effect using C4D? I've tried adapting your tutorial, but without luck!?! That would be fantastico!
Thanks
Kris

I don't know how many of these you actually read but a little tip Andrew for making seamless textures, use the filter Other then offset, then you can offset your texture in any direction but in this case in the X direction then clone stamp over the seam and it will tile perfect. Don't know if you know that but now you do, and knowing is half the battle.

I think its really good that you are incorporating 3d animation software into your tutorials! You should DEFINITELY do more like these. Great stuff!

Hola Andrew. Desde Argentina te agradezco. Tus tutoriales son realmete fantásticos. Es poco común ver gente que de manera gratuita transmite tanto conocimiento. GRACIAS.
by RussianGuru.net 03/18/2008
Very cool tutorial Andrew, definitely beats modeling those splines separately and then applying slice tool

Have you tried V-ray? beats the time spent rendering raytrace in default scanline + you end up with a neat global illumination :)
by Cyrus 03/18/2008
Great tutorial, specially the vines. I never used this method for depth of field. I ususally use RPF format in 3ds and then use 3d Chennels in AE or Combustion to add depth of field, fog or use the camera information from rpf file. I know you talked about RPF format before in the blog. I wonder which method works better!
Thanks

Very nice tutorial.

Two minor remarks, maybe next time burn the texture before making it tile-able?
and scale the texture on the back wall to fit the side walls. (it looked a bit off imho);

Anyway no disrespect intended, your work makes AE easy for even the most novice user and i have alot of respect for that.

Btw Mr.Kramer lately i have had a hard time deciding whether you or the google translated comments you get are more humorous. ;)

Alex asked

Great Tutorial! Looks totally awesome! I have one question: how did you get all the png files in one big sequence? I got like 100 loose png files, so how can you put them together?

When you set the format for the render in Max, you choose PNG and since it's an animation it generates all the PNG files with sequential numbers.

When importing into AE, you just pick one of those files and select PNG sequence in the dialog and AE does the rest for you.

Hope that explains things for you.

by Switch to 3ds Max 03/18/2008
Cinema 4D users need to switch to 3ds Max!

You shouldn't be asking Andrew to do tutorials in your 3D app just because you don't understand it well enough to make this tutorial work for you.

Figure it out in your own app or SWITCH TO MAX!!!

Hey Andrew,

Great as per usual....Another way to make an image tileable is to use the "Offset" tool, then to clone out the revealed edge. If you ever feel like trying something just a bit different...

Cheers!

Hey Andrew, thanks for the tutorial, im very impressed with the result and tryed to experiment.

You can also animate the spline path by autokeying the vertexes in the path that the shapes extrudes on, that can give a great effect.

Thanks for the tutorial!
