Just a quick question, you used real grenades hanging from sting to film a grenade effect, is there a way of using a still pic to achieve the same effect?
Bill Nye the science guy
You could, but it won't have any realistic motion and spinning to it.

I'm not sure about the gazillion dollars but he/they have done actual professional stuff. Read the "about us" at the bottom of the main tutorials page. Title sequences for Fringe and the Star Trek movie, and work with J.J. Abrams (which would be Star Trek, but I'm assuming other projects as well.)

Yeah, those fragmentation grenades do have names, chief. In order of appearance: F1, M61, and M67. I see what you did there, using the Soviet F1 for the tutorial, subtly jamming your communist propaganda down people's wind pipes, and then trying to act like you don't know the difference. Nice try commie, nice try.

I dont know anything about AE but I really want to learn and this is just going to help me sooo much, biggest confusion for me atm is all them compositions....I've been using PS for 4 years now and recently I have started to play around with video in Premier so introducing after effects will just add another dimension to my work.

im pretty new to this can some body explain the point of motion trking(sorry for bad english its not my first lenguage)
BALIKA14
The point of motion tracking is to solve the camera movement,so when you export the camera data to any otheer program, the camera in that other program will move exactly in the same way as the one in the live footage.(if its well tracked!)

Hey man you've taught me a lot about after effects, and I'm glad you have. I've also bought much of your composited material. It's helped me a lot with my projects. I think you are great for sharing your knowledge. You've actually inspired me to do the same. I run a website, and right now the sub-site is doing better. This is because I'm posting all of my work in my Studio work section. And I have, here's where you come in, a tutorial section. It's going to have a beginner to expert ladder you can follow. WOW!!! Oh my god man! Every time I think Ive seen it all from Andrew Kramer he comes out with something else that blows my mind! I love VCP and ALL that you guys do for indie filmmakers. There is no other organization on earth that generously gives to filmmakers the way you guys have and continue to do. Its not a surprise that Video Co Pilot has grown hugely popular in the recent couple years and you guys are now rubbing elbows with the big boys in this industry such as JJ Abrams, Spielberg and Lucas! Congrats! All the best to VCP and please keep making great tutorials! I hope to be able to afford your time to help me on one of my films very shortly! All the best and thanks for yet another great tutorial!

PS

Love the simple grenade hanging off a string tip!

Cheers

Call me a noobkid, but I don't understand why all of that expression work is done for the grenade against the base layer. Why don't you just use the 2d data to stick the grenade in there? Is it so that 3d space can be used? Anyone?

Larry
Really nice tutorial! Thank you!
But is it not possible to do all this without a 3d camera and without 3d layers? I mean just move the grenade around and scale it up as it approaches?

P.S. Why Sam is saying the F-word at the end?
tdesign709
It would be possible to accomplish, but you would then only have a grenade that has one side. It would look less realistic but it is totally possible.
Dan
tdesign709 - Larry is asking about using 2d layers and a 2d camera. The content of the grenade layer would still be the rotating grenade footage andrew shot, so the grenade would still look the same.

Larry - I think you could do the same job without the 3d elements for sure. I think the benefit of using the 3d system, is once you establish a 3d space (by moving the grenade in z) you can simply tack on any extra effects and they scale at the same rate. But then again... once you scaled the grenade you could just marry any other scaling to that too.... so ... yeah
Josh
You COULD, but making the motion look realistic then becomes an entirely new beast; when moving away or towards the camera, objects don't scale at constant rates. Using 3D space gets you the most natural scaling and really ends up being far easier in the end.

You know there is an entire DVD on how to do that at the Video Copilot Website called "the Bullet" it shows you how to do it in Blender Ceminma 4D and 3DS Max but I'm guessind id all you had was after effects a green scree and a camera the same mrthod would work

Hey dude - could you please explain what the expression did at the beginning? I managed to follow along but didn't really get specifically what the expression did? Also,my grenade only lasts about 2 seconds so it disappears before it reaches the screen. Cheers anyway man! Awesome!

Hey, I forgot to say... I LOVE THE NEW AE ONLY ATTITUDE! THATS HOW I WANT ALL TUTS TO BE!!! AE PWNS 3d max!
AlekB
AE does not pwn 3ds Max simply because they are not designed to do the same thing. Comparing them is like saying that apples are easier to get than cars so they must be better.
Jack

Oh, I know! I just have AE and not 3D's Max!

That cup o' noodles would cause much more destruction than any grenade, especially if it's "armed" and full of hot water.

Noodle shrapnel everywhere. The horror...the horror.

Jack

Um... He just duplicated the grenades falling under a green screen, OR he threw the grenade in a bunch of times and made masks... not too hard.
Christian Michael
I think they were actual grenade casings hitting the ground..not an effect.
Jack
Both possible... Both likely... maybe you should ask him on a forum.
