I'm using after effects cs6 and when I turn the masked text layer into a 3d layer it loses its animation. All keyframes still exist, but removing the 3d layer brings the mask animation back...I'm a little confused

yo yo if u want the texture's just use anything alse that looks like a ground and wall u dont have to use the same as the tutorial's and if u do want the samw then buy the riot gear :/ and andrew thanks for all ur hard work till now i have no problems

After I select grunge_gray_04.jpg to add the wall, nstead of a wall I get the typical vertical color lines, the ones that appeared on VHS. It seems as if my AE cs4 cannot recognize the files!

Thx for your sharing , but I have a problem ,when I drop the 'Paint_01.mov' to project, AE cs5 tell me it can't be use,it said:cannot be imported -this '.mov'file is damaged or unsupported.Please tell me how to solve it.

you first have to download/buy trapcode suite from red giant or wherever and on the installer when it asks for location to save to, go to a file called OS (C
then go to program files (x86) then adobe, after effects, support files, presets, install and bam!! your ready mate!

I got this thing working in adobe after effects wonderfuly and it looks awsome however when i try to use it in premiere pro it lags really bad. I run the short clip in after effects and it runs fine. My system looks fine but i can send the specs by email if needed. NOTE: Running CS5 for both premiere and after effects.

you guys could try animating the start point from 0-100 using the normal setting of "on original image" instead of animating the end point with the "Reveal original image" setting that Andrew used in the tut to achieve the same effect.
I also had the animating issue you were mentioning and that method worked for, maybe it can for you guys. Peace

for everyone who needs help with ( paint splatter mov files) just go online search for blood , download the picture and keying remove the white and copy the position of the wall on the blood make it
3D add ( fill ) copy the color . i hope that will help , and thanks for the video , and i think you should explain more about ( paint splatter mov files ) .

To make the whole thing rotate easily without using a Null object - take the camera and press P then hold shift and press A bringing up the Point of Interest and Position - initiate keyframes for both then use the orbit tool to rotate the whole thing. I did the name coming on after the whole thing rotates But yeh, that's the easiest way I figured out.

OK another great tutorial...but i have one major issue....
I wanted to take this effect...write something on a wall....add motion tile to that wall so that theres more room to work with....then after the writing is finished have the way behind it shatter with the shatter effect. Now i have spent all night trying to figure this out...ive tried everything I can think of to pull this off....but it seem when ever you add shatter to anything that has motion tile on it...everything goes completely haywire. Especially when you try to tell shatter to use the comp camera...grrr. If anyone knows a way to pull this off please let me know...cause i dont think there is a way personally...i cant think of anything i havent tried....including making multiple copies of the wayy by hand and mounting them in place...as soon as shatter has you switch to comp cam they all go away but the one the effect is one...or they just poof...or shrink to half size...its aggravating as hell especially how easy this should have been.

good tutorial. it was easy to follow and make. i have a question though. i have bought the riot gear stuff. i am using Adobe After Effects Cs4 and i cannot import the .MOVs from riot gear. could this be caused by the fact that i dont have quicktime installed? i did try to convert the .MOVs to AVIs but they did not import either.

Okay, I have started on this tutorial and I have gotten everything down but the camera.. For some reason I can't pick up on how to move the camera (for it to move with the text)

I'm having the same exact problem Josh is having, I might understand it now though.
Also, I was wondering if you could make a tutorial on how to put more then 1 set of words into a video. You always do 1, but I'd like to see how to move the camera and add another sentence....Kinda of understand what I'm asking?

Omg ive been trying to do this for hours and its not working. whenever i try to put the end at 100 percent it just does the end at 100 percent all through the animation.

The disintegrate effect is a good one there as we will say in our local dialect "oye paa" or "waa di babiaa". I have stayed glued to your site everyday looking new update. For all the people who don't know how to install fonts:
Installing the font is done outside of After Effects:
- Go Start>Control Panel> Fonts
This will open a new window
- Press File>Install New Fonts and then navigate to the folder you have the font file in.
- Click Ok and it should be done. It should now show up in the fonts list for After Effects and every other program that uses fonts.

You are a great resource. This tutorial was perfect, I needed to create several animations for a client involving text being written on a chalk board. I thought I was going to have to manually adjust a layer mask with key points in order to animate the text on. The method you used in this tutorial was so much easier. Thank you.

Amazing tutuorials, thanks!, im a noob to AECS4 but these tutorials are a huge help. Just 1 thing...what would you output these projects as when rendering??? im finding it hard to recreate how good it looks in CS4 to a finished output file, on playback just doesnt look as good. whenever i go over the text with the pen tool, and then generate the stroke over it, the start and end percentages don't animate anything. any suggestions on what i may be doing wrong?

For everyone who wants to know where to put the font...
If it's a TrueType font file, you put it in C:\windows\fonts, and then it will be in your Adobe applications (assuming, of course that your OS is a windows one). If it's not, try to find it on www.dafont.com, and it will most likely be there. If it's not a TrueType font file and you can't find it on dafont.com, try to put it in the "fonts" folder anyway and see if it works.

How do you resize the signature after you have created it? If you change the pixels the stroke doesn't change with the text layer.

hey i loved the tutorial i saw somebody ask what file to put the true type font in. What i did was opened my computer/ c drive/ windows/ font then i just dragged the font i downloaded into that file

Great tute, I'm really a flash developer but want to go down the after effects route as it so much more powerful and would love to integrate the two. Got the mask working and tried to export to flash thinking that it would be vectorised as the text is vector and the stroke is vector. No wall included However the mask did not output. the only way I could create it is as bitmaps which I don't want to do. I have seen other people do this such as "fake pilot" - love his work too. Any ideas how I can do this as I have searched fruitlessly on this topic but believe that it must be able to be done some way. By the way, love your work and think you are doing a great job for the after effects community

I found the "font" TAGSEXTREME in Andrews project,but i dont know how to put it in right folder in AE??? Please help a retard!!!

Andrew you are so entertaining and so generous with your knowledge, I'm moving on in leaps and bounds! Great tutorial, really useful as It can be applied to so many things.

This tutorial was very helpful. I didn't use it exactly as you did but i took wehat i learned and made it look like someone was writing on a peice of paper and then scribblining out the results before moving to another part of the paper.
I'm using it for an upcoming short.

Hey. As everyone else, I also love your tutorials.
I have a prob with this one. When you like.. mark the text with the pentool.. erm.. well that doesnt work when i do it. If i have red text, then uses the pentool - the pentool makes big red marks after it.
