I feel like a putz, right from the beginning I'm having a problem with my masking. I make the new white solid square, add the masks - everything is working. But when I duplicate the mask layer and scale it down, it disappears behind the larger one beneath it. ...um yeah. If I solo the duplicate copy or close the eye of the first - then I can see the new, scaled down layer. It's been a long day so I'm probably overlooking something obvious, but help if you can.

How does Sam could have dark in the background? I tried to create something like that. I was always able to see in the background. If I tried to turn light off, I can't see my face then...

Your tutorials are great dude, but I have a problem when I try this myself. Every time I start to rotate a solid, the solid always distorts and stretches out wildly. Any help is appreciated because this is frustrating.

When you add the 3D layer at 3:26... I dont have a 3D layer option... And i see you don't either, but then you like drag down or something. You must be holding a key.. What key?

Outstanding video tutorial . I have never before seen a presentation that has the fluidity , the knowledge , the clear execution and the awesome visuals.
I really would like to know how you made the video tutorial itself . I do not think that After Effects can record the Screen so it must to have been Camtasia or other similar application. Can you tell us about it please. I for sure will appreciate it and I am sure that a lot of people will too. Thanks.

Hi Andrew. This is an awsome tutorial. Though when I tried it something really weird happened. I double-click on the elipse tool and indeed it creates a perfect circle. After that I use the masking techniques just as you instruct. After making the solid 3D if I try to rotate it in Z-space as you indicate ... it gets oval like an egg! For no apparent reason. From a perfect circle to an egg shape. What's my problem really!? :/

Hey Guys,
I'm coming to near the end of the tutorial and I am having trouble with the camera.

Create a new object.
Apply a "slider" effect on it.
Alt+click on the slider's stopwatch and type this expression:
Math.floor(time*x)
replace x by a value which corresponds to the speed you want
Then, go back to your text and go on to the source text parameter. Alt+click on the stopwatch. Then, use the pick whip and drag it on the slider.

nice tutorial! i've got a problem with the needle and number though (the part at around 18/19 minutes in). when i pick whip the text to the white solid it doesn't move as it does in the tutorial, but it get's distorted. how can i get around that?

I like the tutorials on this site but what absolutely pisses me off is when people do stuff in the videos without saying what they just did.
For example:
At 3:25 you hit a hotkey and I have no idea what just happened, I spend almost 1.5 hours googling for what i'm supposed to do and i'm just gonna quit for today. Most of the tutorials on here are awesome but bumping in issues like these really sucks and its avoidable, please take note..

I have to come up with a possible HUD demonstration, plus show moving into clouds (reflected on the backside of the HUD) AND, a reversed Computer interface on the HUD – while flying into "The Cloud", which right now, is probably more dangerous for me to try to do, than actual Texting while Driving! HAHAHA!!! Well, besides that, I believe this was the luckiest find for me – time wise – since just 6-7 weeks ago, I decided it was time to trying to move from 3D Print and Animation – as a Lightwave Modeler and Animator (and Photoshop Expert) – and to integrate the power of the newest Version of AE and make more robust Video Product – since, video is where I am finding work – and fast. A quick question... could I just as easily make the interface elements in PS as ,png files, or AI as .eps elements? Well, I love this site... prepare for a lots of questions! Quite entertaining too!!! Robocop! HAHAHA!!!

If you're having a problem with rotating on the z axis (circle turns oval on rotate).... Set your Comp to square pixels.

therefore when you type wiggle(.1,180) it means that you want it to rotate .1 times per second at a degree of 180.
wiggle(.4,180) means you want it to rotate .4 times per second at a degree of 180....therefore it is faster.
this is explained in some other tut...i dont remember which.

When he does the Z axis expression why does he change the wiggle from .1 to .4 of a second. Shouldn't that make the rotation slower? Can somebody explain this to me because my slow brain couldn't reason through the logic.

does alt double click still applys in CS4? because when i alt double click a certain file, it just open in a layer but not in composition like in the tutorial, but when i just double click it the composition open just like in the tutorial, can someone clarify that to me thanks.

hey andrew, your tutorials are awesome and always helpful, but many of this tutorials require a download, and in my opinion if you give us the things we will need to create this effects from the beggining, then we really learn very little, therefore i make the next proposition: you have to earn money for your work, that is nothing but fair, but in the tutorials were we won't need "riot gear,or any of the dvd's you make, you should not give us the project download with all the things in it, because that way you are making 80 percent of the job, so you for example, instead of giving us the images for the texture or the precomposed lights, footage, etc, you should show us how do you do that.
I say this because if any of us want to work in the making of special effects, we need to learn things and get used to having to do the work ourselves

Great tutorial, im actually writing program scripts for an actual fully functional HUD, and input to a mask/helmet replica fitted with speakers, microphone, and an over-eye screen fitted with 3D lenses to simulate multi-dimensional HUD components. But this helped me a lot in design planning, and im using this to make a simulation of what i want it to look like. One question- how did you make the starting video Sam_Closeup with the brightly lit face with a black background? This is what i need to start. Please respond and thanks!

Great tutorial, in the movie Iron Man I liked the way he viewed the world from the inside the helmet. Is there any way to create the "scanning" lines moving over walls, furniture etc. and following their edges instead of just making a horizontal line.

i just watched the movie Avatar by james cameron and they used this alot in it. really nice tutorial by the way. I wonder if they took this idea from you because they used adobe and autodesk products to make the movie. Hey ThomJohn- I had the same problem and even posted it here - discovered you have to be sure and have "square pixels" selected when you create the layer(s) for the targeting circles. Also make sure the "aspect ratio locked" box is not checked. Changing to "square pixels" seemed to solve the problem for me.

Yes, this happens to me as well...I actually started looking at the comments to see if anyone knows why this happens. I did this tutorial on two different computers using CS5 and CS3, and they both turned into ovals after rotating with the Z Rotation why why why??!! This is a WONDERFUL tutorial, but I just can't figure this one part out

This is really a test of the elements I made to see how well the work before I go and film something later this week. All the elements were created inside After Effects CS3 (No Illustrator or Photoshop). I'll post better resolution stills of those when I get the chance to.(elements and final piece) Vimeo made is kind of dark.

Hey ThomJohn- I had the same problem and even posted it here - discovered you have to be sure and have "square pixels" selected when you create the layer(s) for the targeting circles. Also make sure the "aspect ratio locked" box is not checked. Changing to "square pixels" seemed to solve the problem for me.

Hey this tutorial looks awesome. However, I get stuck almost right away when I try to rotate the circles in the first HUD element in the Z-axis the become skewed. Its not like that with the other ones. Does anyone know what my problem is?

Kramer, great job as usual. I had to make a bunch of these high-tech screens for a... mature romance film a year ago, and your expressions would have saved me hours. I watch every tutorial and I love your comments, jokes and jabs that you make. They make your tutorials so entertaining and joking about Sam, the way you do, really shows how much you care about him. You guys must be great friends and that's awesome to see as well. Not to get too mushy but thank you is not enough to say but right now it's all I have. The HUD tutorial made me giggle like a little school girl. I have several HUD graphics but the one thing I really loved was the way you "called up" the targeting sysetem and the green display and illuminated Sam's face. Nice tut! But a have a question: How can we make the rotation on the Y axis looks exactly the same on the movie using the motion tracker tool. Is it possible using After Effects or do we have to use Boujou?

If it's making an elipse then your layer isn't square. make sure you make the solid 640X640 or whatever Andrew said in the tutorial, not the actual comp size.

Excellent tutorial, my only problem is that my After Effects, when I am making the targeting system, and I try to rotate the circle, it makes it into an ellipse and it screws up the whole thing - any idea how to fix that?

Actually I loved your first release "Heads Up!" before to christmas... I love your style and creativity but this tutorial doesnt look like a robot.. Great tutorial for execution of the elements needed to complete the effect but i felt in no way that it actually looked like he was in the suit. I think thats one of the tricks, you want enough of his head in the shot for the full scope of the effect but if you leave to much space around his head (also depending on different focal ratios) it just looks like he is in a black room. Great tutorial though.

This tutorial may very well have been the best so far to show what After Effects can really do. So many effects from other tutorials have been tied into this one to make something quite amazing.
I do hope you, and the others in your team, make some money off all this hard work.

This is awesome. You read my mind, I was going to suggest you do a tutorial on something similar to the iron man effect. Well done dud. This is really amazing.
One more thing, you should do a preset on the effects we see on Sky news, when they are showing, whats coming up, like floating panels.

EXCELLENT TUTORIAL !!
Already had to pick up my jaw from the floor when I watched the Iron Man BluRay extras on this ... and now a VCP tutorial ...
It's the little things in life that do it! HEHE!
BTW, a quick other (and more controllable) way to create the target : Instead of a sequence of masks, I'm using a layer with contains a Circle (controllable in radius and thickness), and a Radial Wipe (to cut out the circle parts).
Sticking a wiggle on the transition completion then also gives me a circle element that grows and shrinks in length.
Already looking forward to the next tutorial!

I come for the tutorials, I stay for The Sam. An eye reflection would have only ruined those beautiful browns, and they were simply mesmerizing. I don't know what you're paying the man, but you need to double it! He's simply selling your tutorials!

Best tutorial ever. Love the in-depth explanations and the inspiration. I myself have watched that Iron Man VFX overview about 40 times. And loved this part especcially. You're the best!!!

OMG! this tutorial comes just in time. I have this footage of an old demented lady putting her head inside a microwave and..naww..just kidding.
Thanks again for this awesome tutorial. I'm always overexcited to see you made something new that has stuff I can learn from. I first view your tutorials with a can of soda in one hand and a bag of chips in the other around 8pm, then after washing my greasy fingers I open up my AE and try to duplicate what you did and look at the clock and see it's 4 am already. time flies when you're having fun.
I consider you as one of my best friends Andrew...well..no you ARE my best friend... my only friend actually, I don't get out much..working hard on mastering this stuff..

Great tutorial Andrew. This looks wicked. I can't wait to write a Sci-Fi script and put this in there. Excellent job......now, if I can just get myself to look as cool as Sam, I'll be good to go. I might even grow a moustache for the gig....much easier that tracking one in....
