I like your stories. I think your funny. If someone can't handle 3 minutes of stories in a FREE 50 minute tutorial, then they shouldn't watch it because they obviously don't have much time on their hands.

I've been repeating this tutorial over and over again to memorize it. My first attempts worked great. Everything worked smoothly. But now I've been trying to try the same method to fracture a PNG logo. I'm cutting the layer just as you do but when I run the script, nothing happens. The masks are there and the layer is cut but when I try to control the pieces with the adjustment layer, it moves as a whole.
Please let me know what I'm doing wrong.

While at the new Dallas Stadium watching a loosing Dallas game, my sone and I recognized several Video Copilot AE projects including Fracture Design pop out as calling for Defence or Offence.
So at the end my son and I ended up cheering for Andrew Kramer instead of the Cowboys.

I really like this tutorial but there are problems with learning and following the instruction.
1. you work with cs3 and I cs4
2.you do not tell us about how to set the preferences example do we check in general the allow script action?
3. when i go to follow your instruction with the mask and duplicate well abeam the mask where there is a box add invert does not appear on my cs4. learning is then stopped and trying to figure out where to go to perform the same action of your instruction.
I wish there was a way that you could clarify so learning is easy

AH, omg... i have CS3 and CS4 but nothing of them includes the particles effect i googled it already but i couldn't find anything!!! Can anyone help me!?^^ That would be nice... I was just watching ESPN and a commercial came on for a Sports Illustrated offer for the LA Lakers that uses this exact tutorial, minus the text. It also uses your Break Apart effect that makes the logo look like it shatters. Have you seen this? I don't know if there's a link to it out there, but it's obviously straight from your tutorial. Even uses the same images. You should get a cut of all those special offers sold!

Wanted to say thanks. I am using this breif shot in a short movie I am making for my stepson and neice and nephew about a toy robot attacking. The effects in the movie itself will probably look like crao but this looks sweet. Even though I couldn't create the sparks like you did...I tried but failed

i m unable to run the script for this particular tutorial, i don't know why as it keeps on giving error on line 55 at times, does the script work with only after effect 8.0 version..... I m using 6.5 version of after effect.....

Great tut. Reminds me of "projecting" within a 3D program. the masks to layers script is a life saver but for some reason, I cannot get it to work - When I run it, it says " select at least one layer " and I AM! Stuck and cant continue the tut Any others having the same problem? (im on a mac)

i agree, you can waste as much time of mine as you like andrew. you teach so much and ask for so little in return. you price your items so reasonable that it is almost impossible to not buy them!
keep it up, you are making all of us better every time you make a tut and post it up.
btw, i think the side stories are necessary, since it breaks up all the technical stuff, and makes learning that much better. a little behind the scenes a bit as well, since it shows how your brain is picking things off.

You know, people do say that the stories make the tutorials long but without them it'd be like going to school with a boring prof rambling off information. The stories make me feel as though I'm hanging with a friend, doing After Effects, and being all crazy and stuff. Not that I know what it's like to hang with a friend but if I did I imagine it would be like that. Keep the stories coming cause you are all the social life I have right now. And if you want to include some cool After Effects info with them, all the better....

I'm experimenting with Ming vases, trying to get some inssurance money then put them back together again.
I'm using the "squashing metal machine" to make virtual ketchup from virtual tomatoes. I'm hoping you'll make a tutorial on how to make virtual french fries soon.
Looking forward to your new special effects DVD, I feel like blowing things up, but don't get me wrong, it's all in virtual space, nobody ever really gets hurt.

You know I was actually getting mad that we havent seen a tutorial from you in a while, I was like â€Â What the heck is this guy up to not making tutorialsâ€Â and then you announced that you were busy with action essentials and I was super exited about it and I was like “okay acceptable excuseâ€Â.

Literally LOL'd at the last part. You just cut yourself off purposely? This was a wonderful tutorial and I'll make sure to add a lot of those tricks to my videos. I personally found the orange solid with an add and a slight mask to be very useful even though its very basic. Thanks a bunch.

Andrew, just wanted to say how helpful your whole tutorials section helped me out this far.. and i have no doubts they'll be as helpful in the future.. as for what you said in the very end of this one (which i couldn't believe lasted an hour and i didn't even notice)i don't think you make anyone waste their time, i mean.. there are plenty of tutorials out there but none of them are as enjoyable as yours. in fact i only enjoy your tutorials, as everyone gets to the point and it'd be the same if microsoft sam "read" it, really dull.. this isn't the case, you put a lot of effort into making us understand and i really notice you enjoy what you do. You're great Andrew! Keep it up forever! Most of us out there learnt AE just because AK decided to make this wonderful video tuts!

Andrew....You are the best. Alot of people get so much from these tutorials. I can't imagine just knowing all that you know about AE...it's just too much. Let alone other 3D products....you're mind is awesome. I've seen other tutorials that don't even come close to explaining what's going on like you do. You are even getting better by mentioning more shortcuts too....great job.

Aww! Andrew, man one of the main reasons I watch your tutorials are listening to your hilarious rants and stories about the most random things! I personally LOVE the stories! At some point I plan to go through and clip out all the stories and jokes of all the tutorials and save them! Keep up the awesome work man!

Dude, you rock and i mean ROCK! This is amazing! Ive been dealing with 3ds max for a long time and been integrating 3d graphics with real footage using bare 3ds max and programs like boujou, matchmover etc. but i never had any idea that it could be done much more easier using composing programs, you know, rendering sometimes takes time... believe it or not but i watched nearly every video tutorial in about 3 or 4 days, and i have to admit that after effects is just what i needed, so thank u for this awesome website, wish u luck!!

I LOVE these tutorials!! I do.. I love them... And I totally digg the humor. I laugh my ass off at these silly anecdotes he puts in. I find them hilarious (and very a-typical american I guess)

wow! amazing like always... but what i liked most of this tutorial was the fact that if you want to separate 3D layers you just have to put a 2D layer in the middle of them!
I didnt know that! I've always start to get crazy by changing the position of those 3D layers... and when they had keyframes there, it just get harder and harder...
and sometimes when I had 2D adjustments layers in the middle I was like "WTF!? why the hell are they behind if they are closer to the freaking*** camera!

Also when you use seedRandom() the first parameter is the seed while the second is a timeless flag. The second should be 1 or true while the first should be the random slider control.

FYI you didn't place random() around the wiggle() calls in the video. I did it on my own in order to get the correct effect as you move the sliders before setting the key frames around 13 minute mark.

awesome...did you know that you said the whole "Easy Ease" thing twice in the middle of it? Oh well, it was a really long tutorial, so I'm sure mistakes like that can happen. I loved it, and I actually thought of a great way to use it for this project I'm working on right now. Thanks a lot.
