never mind i know how to fix it! i cant fully explain but what i did is i went to fragmentation options on rayfire and i clicked on where it says "pick" and then clicked on "fragment impact objects" and it worked! i somehow clicked on something else to make it work but i dont remember best option to do is what i said on the top if that doesnt work click on the sphere you want to shatter then click on "pick" and click "fragment impact objects" thats how it worked for me :D

Scratch that last comment I figured out the problem. But one more question...where do you get all of your sound effects? I tried finding similar ones online and in Designer Sound FX but I can't find that cool glass breaking or shock wave sound from the Demon Cam promo. Any help?
Thanks.

Hmm..! It worked very nicely. But when i rendered out for afx work flow only Alpha channel is rendered. As mentioned in tutorial that both Alpha and footage-RGBA channel is imported...

would you provide the 3ds max rendering preset for finalize out put to Afx composition.

Hey Andrew! Excelent tutorial! I´ve try to make some that I find interesting. Whit a logo from an image, composite in 3ds max to make it 3d and collapse it in the air, like the shatterize effect you do. BUT i want to pause the explosion, so i can move the camera around the particles, and then complete the action. I´ve tried to do it with shatter effect in After Effects, but it can´t be paused. And the cc poly you use in the Shatterize tutorial is 2d. So I decided to do it in 3ds max, but i suck in 3ds max. If you can make a tutorial of something like that, I´ll be very grateful.
Thanks for all you learn me in yours tutorials.
Hugs from Argentina.

it's an amazing effect and i'm tryin' to make something like this in cinema 4d with different pluggins (i prefer xplode). but the problem is: when i cut my sphere in pieces with xplode (or whatever), when i apply the glass texture i made over the broken sphere (falling, before hits the floor) just screw up, because the ball is already broken and glass show up every piece.
even without glass, when i render my ball falling before hits the floor, with any material, i can see is not a perfect sphere, i can see small edges.
sounds logic, the sphere is already broken but i don't know other way to do this in cinema 4d.
help meeeee :(

(sorry for my english)

if you drop anything at such a short distance it may not break. this is how physics work. Put the ball higher up.. in "Physx Demoliton Properties" Material Solidity= 0.001 Probability = 100% .. remember this. if you drop a marble on a steel floor it will just bounce. but if you drop a hollow glass ball the size of a bowling ball.. well.. you get the Idea! Size does matter in PhysX.

Andrew would be nice see some advanced chroma keying tech like how to isolate the crystal ball so you dont have to roto. would be really helpful, the TV show walking Dead uses alot of chroma like when the half Zombie crawling on grass, in behind the scenes they showed actor wearing blue chroma pants to key out then add the insides like intestines and some other inside people parts. would really like to know how you did the crystal ball. Thanks Mate!

Would you recommend teaching yourself Maya or Cinema 4d, if you had to choose one?
Cooldaddy
02/01/2012
I would recommend Maya, just because Autodesk is better at making 3d Products. However! I would recommend 3Ds Max instead. But it depends what you want to do. If you want a full on animation studio that takes hours and hours on end of learning, but produces high quality and professional final results I recommend Maya. If you want the cheap amateur short learning time product, choose C4D. For an all round studio that can do modeling, animation, simulation, and 3rd party content at a high level, choose MAX. I still recommend Maya, because the payoff is nearly priceless.

For Tony, Davidnator, & Phil... I realize this reply is late, but I found what seem to work for me. Navigate to the Rayfire "Impact Objects" properties, then select Mass "By: Volume Range". Under this, change the minimum mass to 199 and the maximum mass to 200. I'm running Rayfire 1.43, but there should be a similar option with other versions. Hope this helps..!!
Tony

Prinxor - I was having the same problem and when I did what you suggested it started breaking, but it's actually breaking at the start of the animation and not when it hits the ground. Any suggestions?

You have to click on "Fragment Impact Objects" below the fragmentations.
Then it should work fine.

As usual, Andrew has done it again, very nice work, I too have a background in 3d max, Maya, Autocad, microstation and a host of other programs. Always enjoy looking at Andrew's work, solace in the storm i say. I am working with 3ds max 2012 now and feeling my way around it since i'm use to the older versions. keep up the good work!!!
