I just noticed something. Andrew is using Rayfire to fracture the glass ball in this tutorial. But a preset he's using inside Rayfire is called Voronoi - Fracture. Voronoi is a free script you can download from scriptspot.com that fractures geometry in 3DS Max. Does anyone else find that interesting, but me? It's not a judgement at all; I just found it curious. I'm going to try this tutorial with the Voronoi script and see if I can duplicate the exact same results for myself.

Hey Andrew! Excelent tutorial! I´ve try to make some that I find interesting. Whit a logo from an image, composite in 3ds max to make it 3d and collapse it in the air, like the shatterize effect you do. BUT i want to pause the explosion, so i can move the camera around the particles, and then complete the action. I´ve tried to do it with shatter effect in After Effects, but it can´t be paused. And the cc poly you use in the Shatterize tutorial is 2d. So I decided to do it in 3ds max, but i suck in 3ds max. If you can make a tutorial of something like that, I´ll be very grateful.
Thanks for all you learn me in yours tutorials.
Hugs from Argentina.

it's an amazing effect and i'm tryin' to make something like this in cinema 4d with different pluggins (i prefer xplode). but the problem is: when i cut my sphere in pieces with xplode (or whatever), when i apply the glass texture i made over the broken sphere (falling, before hits the floor) just screw up, because the ball is already broken and glass show up every piece.
even without glass, when i render my ball falling before hits the floor, with any material, i can see is not a perfect sphere, i can see small edges.
sounds logic, the sphere is already broken but i don't know other way to do this in cinema 4d.
help meeeee

if you drop anything at such a short distance it may not break. this is how physics work. Put the ball higher up.. in "Physx Demoliton Properties" Material Solidity= 0.001 Probability = 100% .. remember this. if you drop a marble on a steel floor it will just bounce. but if you drop a hollow glass ball the size of a bowling ball.. well.. you get the Idea! Size does matter in PhysX.

Andrew would be nice see some advanced chroma keying tech like how to isolate the crystal ball so you dont have to roto. would be really helpful, the TV show walking Dead uses alot of chroma like when the half Zombie crawling on grass, in behind the scenes they showed actor wearing blue chroma pants to key out then add the insides like intestines and some other inside people parts. would really like to know how you did the crystal ball. Thanks Mate!

Would you recommend teaching yourself Maya or Cinema 4d, if you had to choose one?
Cooldaddy
I would recommend Maya, just because Autodesk is better at making 3d Products. However! I would recommend 3Ds Max instead. But it depends what you want to do. If you want a full on animation studio that takes hours and hours on end of learning, but produces high quality and professional final results I recommend Maya. If you want the cheap amateur short learning time product, choose C4D. For an all round studio that can do modeling, animation, simulation, and 3rd party content at a high level, choose MAX. I still recommend Maya, because the payoff is nearly priceless.

For Tony, Davidnator, & Phil... I realize this reply is late, but I found what seem to work for me. Navigate to the Rayfire "Impact Objects" properties, then select Mass "By: Volume Range". Under this, change the minimum mass to 199 and the maximum mass to 200. I'm running Rayfire 1.43, but there should be a similar option with other versions. Hope this helps..!!

by the way, it's some "strange" that you go deep in 3DS/AE process, while in the same time everybody is waiting for Element3D, which could achieve in a much more easier way that sort of effect in mix with Particle effect etc...
Do you have some fresh news about that, Andrew...

I did this in Blender2.60. Basically all the settings are the same. Just instead of using rayfire, simulate it in the game engine. While in the game engine, leave the floor as it is and set the sphere to be a rigid body, and set the collision bounds to "convex hull". Then turn on the fracture add on, break the sphere into 150 peices (making sure to click "flat" in the drop down menu and not "spherical rough&quot. press "P" and record the animation. Everything else is the same I believe. If you have any troubles, you can send me an email. It's randomazing@yahoo.com ... Hope this helps

Yeah, the big problem right now would be the simulation "breaking" the mesh there are some plugins but the last time I checked they were still pretty buggy. Anyone know if the ShatterMe script has been developed more? or another option?
Tory
Never Mind I answered my own question and the name ShatterMe has changed to Fracture Object Tools and it is now a default add on in blender 2.6 however it is not nearly as easy as other physics options the best description I have found of how we would have to do it is here http://www.directcg.info/how-to-use-fracturetools-inside-blender.html

Me too! I see all of these "C4D" requests, but I am a Maya person myself. Still, I could work with C4D. I haven't used 3DS Max (nor seen any job postings requiring it in years. They don't even have it for the Mac.

I wish this was for cinema 4d also :/
but for anybody who wants to do this with cinema 4d i found a plugin that does the exact same thing as rayfire and it's totally free.. google "thrausi cinema 4d" or go to the main website nitro4d dot come and freebie

hhahaha!! i love how you used an hdri with a 'fluorescent' light in a medieval setting!

either way... super amazing tutorial!
Rasmus28
I have to tell you, you´ve seen the same problem than me, except that light noes not belong to the hdri, it belongs to the vray light (watch the tutorial and if it does not convince you try to do it exactly and you will see). He would fix it by activating invisible on the light properties or put 4 fire color spheres trying to replicate the same illumination in the scene. Either way it´s a finest piece of art.

Mac users can't do this. Well specifically me, cause l bought parallel desktop, but returned it the next day after realizing l don't have enough ram.
MannyFigs

Yes they can All you need is Bootcamp to boot to Windows natively. I wouldn't use Parallels to virtually boot to Windows because it splits the performance of your machine.

Cool stuff andrew. I love making stuff like this, i just never get around to it anymore. Been using C4D for so long now that I've forgotten half of what i know in AE. Thanks for sharing though ahah I might have to give it a shot at some point using Maya and Mental Ray or Max and Mental ray.

Awesome work as always, although I'm curious to know why you didn’t use the globe you made in the first part of the tutorial and skipped to the ACTUAL globe you used in the finished movie.

This is by no means a criticism, (how dare I, I know you have killed for less lol), just trying to work out why you felt the one in the first steps needed to be replaced with the original.

Fabulous work as always.

Probably because he didn't want to render the scene again. HD resolution would take many hours...
bobofbobs
So you wanted him to use BOTH files? Doesn't make sense.
Christian Michael
@ bobofbobs,
Of course I didn’t expect him to use both files lol. It was a genuine question. It was the first time I had seen him not finish a project from start to finish with the tutorial project files alone. If it was down to rendering time that obviously makes all the sense in the world. I was just CURIOUS to know if there was another reason and I’m sure I’m not the only one that thought the same thing. (maybe just the only one that had the bad manners to bring it up:0)
His work (and teams work) are phenomenal and I’m not for one minute suggesting otherwise. My granny used to say “ The only stupid question is the one you don’t ask”

Can we get Blender in a tutorial once in awhile.

I'm a graphics grunt, and never received trust money from rich relatives and can't afford 3DSmax.
Believe it or don't.
Jack
I agree! But maybe this could be done on Blender... I wish.
Mark
I don't know if it is fair for folks to expect Andrew to do 3-4 tuts on different platforms; he was trained on 3DS, those of on C4D or Blender will just have to take the work flow and apply it. Blender 2.6 has great shatter and collision physics.
Rayne

@ Jack
...erm, Jack? Andrew is (believe it or don't) one of that (relatively) rare breed of Compositor that actually will (when push comes to shove) work a 3D program in order to produce an effect. Many do not.

As is, MAX is very much a side interest - only used at all because that's the software Andrews had the opportunity to pick up an play with.

That's the only reason he's using it.

There isn't anything being produced here MAX dependent - this is the key issue to bear in mind - stick with your personal 3D software of choice/accessibility and then start reading up on how to use physics and dynamics in that - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqWWwcdFed8 - Google's your friend, use it.

All told this tut remains what it is, fundamentally an AE compositing tut - it's just a case of the fact that in this one, Andrews gone fron-the-ground up showing you how he generated the original footage necessary for the Compositing phase.

Blender will get you there just as easy - likely as not easier - it's just Andrew likely as not wouldn't personally know Blender from a cocktail shaker - Compositors are notorious for it.

AE is Andrews strength - this is why the 3D side of the tut doesn't matter - you can actually blast out the 3D part in anything - really not looking at anything MAX dependent here.

If the software handles physics and particle systems, you can shatter any geometry you like. Andrew just happened to come across his understanding of doing that via MAX - it isn't gospel.

Take care and have fun.

Really great tutorial. I think it was a great idea to introduce new software. Obviously you can't achieve some results with just After Effects plus a lot of software is available as trial. I would really love to see more 3d composting tutorials in the future. Thanks again.

Why?
He's showing us an industry workflow!
It's great to get tutorials from Andrew Kramer on multiple programs like this
thefilm
I agreed with josh!
u must see the final Result
Jack
Josh, I don't know if you understand that not all of us can just buy 3d software for 1000 dollars! It's one thing with huge student discounts, like for AE (for me it only cost like 400 dollars), but it isn't the same for 3D Max! And, some of us only are coming here for the AE part of the site, and when we get these great tutorials that we can't do, it's a bit frustrating!
Mark
Josh, I can see your point but personally I want these heavier projects; Demon Cam tutorials will suit those that want industry workflows, they may not be for everyone.
thefilm

Hey JACK,
i can understand your feelings.
Now listen my story. i am a student and doing part time job.
if i am going to buy 3ds max i have to pay my 5 months salary, ( even i don't have my own comp.) i stay 2 hours over in my office for use office's comp. and for learn more.(i am not getting a Rupee for that 2 hours)
you have to learn all kind of software which are needed with AE directly or indirectly FOR BEST RESULT AND BECOME A PROFESSIONAL
Chris

<strong>I think you are not aware</strong>, that as a student, you actually have right to a completely free download of 3dsMax - and yes, you get the full version.

Andre and Staff first off please have a great Holiday. Second, I really enjoyed this tutorial it give me a chance to think (I do not have 3DS Max, I'm a C4D 13 guy). But the concepts seem translatable. I will be attempting to design something over the Holidays and I cant wait for Cyber Monday so I can catch a deal on some VC tools.

Thanks for contributing to the proprietary secrets regarding my continued self-employment.

Happy Thanksgiving.
