I did this tutorial but at the start when the camera moves it seems to glitch well jitter back and forward before moving does anyone know what the cause will be. other problem with the preset is when you easy ease the keyframes. The first position on the slider invariably jumps around. From then on it seems fine. Thank You Very Much for your tutorials!

Mr. Kramer, how did you change the Blocks layer to blue so quickly? I just found that if a user presses:
Command+Shift+Y it will bring the layer properties dialogue box back up with the color picker. however, you just made the solid blue without that dialogue box coming up?

My previous comment about this hasn't been published yet - but yep, you definitely have a problem with this preset, and it definitely occurs when you easy ease the keyframes. The first position on the slider invariably jumps around. From then on it seems fine. Admittedly I'm still a noob here in AE but I don't believe this is anything I'm inadvertently doing, especially because several others are having the same issue. Thanx

if you are running a trail version of Adobe After Effects, particles won't be there. There would be if you would install After effects with a serial.

can you please slow down a bit. don't assume that all of your viewers are already experts. that is why you are teaching, right? some of us have just started using this software so we're just on the "noob' stage who really wants to learn and watch a very "informative" video. i can also notice that most of the times, you are clicking something while talking about unrelated subjects without even mentioning what you just did. it makes me just watch segments by segments repeatedly just to see if i missed something.
anyway, thanks for the effort. I know that you've been very helpful to medium to expert users and the like

Hi Andrew,
You are by far the most knowledgeable AE guy out there. But I have to agree with Mark. I have a terrible time keeping up. If you could slow down just a bit, it would be beneficial to us all. I have had to watch some 3-4 times pausing frequently to keep up with the project. Thanks for what you do, I don't want to sound jerky at all. Slowing down would be awesome.

just watch some basic tutorials and then when you are familiar with the basics, come this tutorial again and you'll see it'll be easier to do, BTW taking your time to pausing the video and take a brake helps a lot

It worked before but now something wierd happens whenever i move my null object. My FIRST, SECOND, FOURTH texts no longer move, only an outline which sort of moves behind the stage(WIERD). I suspect it happened when i was trying to type in wiggle(.25,250), i deleted all the codes before typing.I think i may have damaged my after effects software or something. PLEASE HELP!

I think I am having the same problem. What is happening is when I get to adding the particles the position of the Sure Target Null Object zooms along the Z axis. From about -557 to 0 making the FIRST word bounce up and down. Any ideas?

however, i encountered a problem. Everytime i change my view from "Active Camera" to "Custom View", my background is lost, leaving a plain black color at the back (composition bg). I can't find a solution here.

Hey there, I am stuck at about the 3:30 mark because I am having issue with turning text into a 3D Layer. When you do it the green and red arrows or the focus point is in the bottom middle of your text, mine goes to the bottom left so when I use suretarget to go to my text it focuses the bottom left of my text.

Every time I go to move the Null Object my ramp background moves with it, leaving only black in the background. I can't figure out how to lock the background in place for the life of me. Any help?

you probably have your background layer set to 3D. Change it back to a 2D layer and it will follow the camera.

I tried to follow this tutorial. When i apply the suretarget plguin and move the T1 to the first it does not center the FIRST text. To add to it i cannot manually move the FIRST text to the center.

I think there is a bug in sure target related to cs4 because when i move the slider from target 1 to target 2, it goes on to show the animation but when it reaches the keyframe 2 it automatically jumps back to where slider is 1 ???any help

Hello everyone. I had a problem when using this tutorial. I managed to overcome it, so I'll explain if anyone has the same problem.

When the SureTarget was going from 'First, second, third' layers, half of the text was off screen. This is because the Anchor Point of the 3D layer was set at the start of the text. If you have this problem just go into the Transform options of each text layer, and change the anchor point to the middle of the text.

Hi there

I posted the previous comment, I just tried to do the entire tutorial again. Just found The problematic point. Up to the point of creating the SureTarget layer, and creating the keyframes for every layer everything goes well. After applying the Easy ease to those keyframes, the Transform expression for "Position" (SureTarget layer) starts to change the values automatically (I believe the wiggle value), it is very strange, I undo the Easy Ease and everything goes back to normal, I have tried applying the Easy Ease to every keyframe individually but it does not help.

I am working on a Mac with AF CS4, I believe this is a bug in the SureTarget filter, although I can afford no Easing ease the keyframes, It would be nice if someone could find out what is happening at that point.

Hi there,

I have made the tutorial many times but am having problems, the first text line is jumping when moving from T1 to T2. I have checked everywhere and there are no keyframes at the point where the video starts, I believe there might be something in the expression of the "Sure Target layer" that might be causing the text to wiggle.

Are any of you having the same problem? Could any of you point me to the right spot and perhaps provide some help?

I would like to point out when using the SureTarget plugin, fellow students should understand that they have to not only keyframe the slider to move between the targets, but ALSO keyframe the orientation property of the null object attached to the camera.

Somehow I kept losing some of my targets, even in the custom view. Possibly I was moving the camera without realizing it.

That was a LOOONG tut, but there are several valuable lessons to be learned for a newbie like myself. Thanks AK! As soon as I make some dough with my new skills, I will definitely be purchasing the full bundle.

Soy novata en esto, quisiera saber lo siguiente
una vez que usted coloca los texto la camara y el null objet , adiciona al null objet el eefecto sure target la posicion de los texto no cambia queda tal cual usted la diseño , cuando adiciona las particulas en la imagen se ve que el bloque amarilo de particulas esta en el centro sin embargo yo coloco el efecto sure target y la posicion de las letras cambia se van al lado derecho y cuando adiciono las particulas tambien se van a un lado. Es decir todo el trabajo se mueve al lado derecho de la pantalla .

La medida de mi composicion es de 720 x 480 sera esa la razon????....

I was just watching Dateline, subject on American born Muslim extremists, spreading their word, recruitment, etc., via use of YouTube, the internet, etc. The graphics from this tutorial was used on one of their pages. It was only onscreen for a moment, but I recognized it from this site. You can probably watch a repeat of this on Hulu. Dateline airing 5/9/10.

The first frame of my comp applies motion blur to the particles if I offset it. How do I fix that? It only does it on the very first frame unless i make the particles start from the beggining. I want the particles to already be there when the comp starts.

LuQii - if you pause at 2:15 you can see the path you need to follow.
it will be located on your local disc (under My Computer)
If you're using a mac, just over over the applications folder, find Adobe After Effects and drop it in the presets folder.

Im interested in using this preset for a video montage for my college. I have several 1-1.30min interviews that i want to house all on the same screen, the same way the titles are layed out. Following the tutorial - and my SureTarget null object does NOT have "Orientation" under the Rotation menu.

If I go to Layer > Transform > Orientation is grayed out and not selectable.

Any ideas?

Hello. Sorry to "spam". But I got the pan behind tool working. Now, I see another problem. When I adjust the pan for each title, it now does this insane little twitch. So say at frame 1 it's positions correctly, at frame 3 it will go back to where it was before I panned behind, and at frame say 4-5 it will then go back to where I panned.

How will I fix this? Thanks.

Great tutorial, but I have a problem. When I try to rotate the title 'second' more towards the camera, a window pops up that says 'After Effects error: overflow converting ratio denominators.
(17 :: 18)

And when I click OK or try to X out the box, it instantly pops up again. Then I have to restart after effects and try again, and this still happens. Any help? Thanks

There are already a few in there... but even clicking on the effects. AE opens and shouts AE Error: Can't import file "Day4Night.ffx": unsupported filetype or extension.

It's been a Long time that I haven't been here, but still find new tuts every time when i come and visit. I found a bit of a problem with this preset on the Mac environment. Does it work only on PC? The texts flickers on the first few frames. Maybe I did something wrong. But, as always great tutorials!!!!

This tutorial has been watched and used by the "Belgische Deffensie".
(sort of like belgium army)
They used the EXACT same things as this tutorial
the squares, the suretarget, 3d-like text.
And they showed it on tv, real fun to see your work being used for this

hmm doesn't work?
my german version with german preset dosn't work!
if i take the null objekt in 3d space and put the preset on it.

AE dosn't allow the expression of the z rotation. i think there could be a wrong named controller.

and so, if i select two layers as targets and set keyframes in the slider option, the camera is parenting to the nullobjekt but stays still in place.

who can help?

I was at the local mall today here in Bangalore and I saw some interesting graphics at a display monitor of a local Media Graphics firm. I am sad to say but shamelessly they have used this same project (Energetic titles)

. The person who copied didn't even bother to change the color or the font size or try a different font. Probably he downloaded this project and just changed the text.

Love the tutorial but my AE CS3 gives me an error message everytime I start using SureTarget preset, it's something like the preset was created with a later version of AE and cannot use possition property, the preset shows with all the options but when playing nothing moves, why is this?

Andrew, I can't even beleive how incredible this site is. Since I found it last year, I have watched many if not all of your vids, and for an advanced Novice like me, the level you work at is inspirational and possible. I have the impression that the new CS4 finally has true 3-D capabilities, and I can't wait to see what you do with it.

I am great fan of your tutorials and I have learned a lot with them!! Thanks a lot!!! On the other hand, I love this tutorial!! But I have a problem, I hope u can help me, I am using AEF 8.0.2 and I installed the plugin we need to use "Sure Target" but my version is in spanish, it doesn`t work... it says that the version I am using, has to be actualized because the "Sure Target Spanish" was made in a newer version... On the other hand I installed the "Sure Target english" I can use it in my null objet, though the expression doesnÂ´t work, I imagine because is in english, can you help me??!! I was having problems with linking the source text and then changing kerning. After making multiple repetative changes I decided to just precomp the Text Layer and duplicate that. Then all you have to do is change the text in one and it makes the adjustments to all. Make sure to duplicate the comp in the Project manager and replace the source when changing the texts.

Is there an expression for linking kerning aswell?

I'm a huge fan of videocopilot. Thank you for everything and great work on FRINGE. When do you or Sam get a guest spot with Pacey?

@Marco: you've to change in the expression used. It doesn't works simply because the expression control Slider in italian is named "Cursore" and Layer is named "Livello". If you look into the expression change all the words Slider into Cursore and Layer in Livello. To make useable again without changing the expression, select the NULL Object, then select all the effects applied and select the position. Don't forget a single voice, otherwise it doesn't work! Then save as a new preset and you've got the Italian version of SureTarget.

Actually i'm using the 7.0 professional version of AFX, but when i tried to open the project, afx shown a message saying that the project just can opened with the 8.0 version of the software.

Phenomenal! It's exactly what I was looking for. This is a great way to bundle small video clips (like bulletin announcements) into a connective collective. Bulletin 1 video moves into view, Bulletin 2 video comes in next...all without having to mess with the camera. Thanks for all your work.

Useful tip:

By minute 26, when you duplicate the "video" title you have to update the parenting and expressions to the new parent text. I found that by copying and pasting the layers, expressions and parenting links get updated by themselves.

Great tutorial and preset that makes it really easy to controll in 3D Space.

But i have some problems with the Preset.
I use the German Version of the preset and i needed to change some text (Slider = Schieberegler, Layer = Ebene).

Andrew.... For some reason when i target things it always targets in the top left corner like in your tutorial. I noticed that it is targeting the anchor point. The anchor point on your text seemed to automatically be in the center of the text at the bottom. Is there a way to set the anchor point to automatically be in the middle of the text when it is generated rather than manually setting the anchor point every time?

You might want to tell the viewers of this tutorial to render the 3d text sequence and 3d particle sequence separately and put them together in another comp, because my computer slowed to a crawl and stopped 5 times before I tried it this way.

I'm done, I can't make work the falloff preset with suretarget together in the same composition, I can make function one, but when I put the other, the composition is screwed up, I triple checked every step but always happen the same result. I thought you will be very interested in investigate this right on, since this is a real question (and maybe a little challenge) but you don't answer it. Sorry for not being the typical hysteric fan of you, but I still think you are a great guy. Goodbye.

Wow awesome tutorial! Thanks, keep up the great work!

The only thing I found wrong with it was that the layers behind the text to create the 3d look didn't have motion blur enabled because you kept them locked, but it's obviously not noticeable, I only saw it when I rendered out your project.

Loving your site here in Australia, keep on pumping out the tutorials for us AE peasants to devour and then think "oh damn, when's he gonna throw us some more?"

Ok I'm trying the experiment now, and the falloff respond but not completely well, or at least no for me LOL... It make fall off the layers but they don't interact dinamically with the null object who have SureTarget applied, my humble opinion is because they share the same camera in the code and After Effects can't guess what to do exactly because he is reading both commands but separately not as a one interacting group, I don't know if I make my point, sorry english is not my natural lenguage.

Hey Andrew I'm wondering: we can match this suretarget targeting system with the falloff preset together? how we can do that? it will be great because layers will falloff automatically when the camera moves between each target asigned with the sureTarget. I just follow the tutorial, but when it comes to keyframing with SureTarget slider. I set a Keyframe at 1 second, set another on 2 seconds and change it to 2,00. But nothing happens..

Mr. Kramer,

I work a lot with Flash, and since the incorporation of Adobe and Macromedia, I was drooling over the ways the two applications compliment each other. Since both of the API's are spawned from Java/JavaScript, have you heard of any plans to put more coding functionality into AE. As far as having components that Flash possesses and bringing that into AE. Db Management, Data manipulation, Logic and so on.

Whoa ... this whole camera movement stuff is EXACTLY what I did a few days ago - except I didn't have the preset and had to keyframe it, which is of course a lot of work -.-
including the particles, which are kinda the same and the opacity stuff which makes layers visible when the camera gets closer ...

but hey, now I know how to do it without keyframing the camera parameters

Nice AC, we need more tutorials for commercials and online video marketing! Hook it up bro...

Plus it would be nice to have some more of the newer movie FX tutorials, i think you were going in a positive direction with the Iron Man tutorial.

People love to see those type of effect mixed in with their own materials.
