When you draw the rectangle shape around the button in Photoshop you say "make sure this option is selected" and you put the mouse over an option in the menu bar. However, in my version of Photoshop it is not there. What is this option and is there another way to turn it on?

This worked great when I put it in to the DVD player except for one thing, I could
only go to the menu by clicking the "title menu" button on the remote instead of "menu". It's fine for me, but I'm going to be giving other people the DVD and they probably would think there's something wrong with it. Any suggestions?

Always enjoy your tutorials and love your sense of humor.
I just followed you DVD authoring tutorial, but find something strange with it.

Tried all combination of field orders, tried burning from different hard drives, burning to folder instead of discs etc... nothing works?! I'm desperate for someone to help with this...

I was just thinking that instead of highlights for the buttons since it can look messy (I understand it's for tutorial purposes) you could get the text tool and use the same font as the button and kind of do a highlight with that with bigger font slightly. Although if you did it this way it wouldn't be a drag and drop sort of thing, you would have to create a button for each selection you have. Other than that, this tutorial was the most helpful tutorial I have ever watched in my entire life. I've always wanted to do this kind of stuff.

Again: A great Tutorial!

I just want to ad: For those of you who have Dynamic Link (it only comes with the bundles), you don´t have to render the aae project!
You easily can add it in Encore (or open a new one there).
And: You can add buttons directly in aae!!!

Chears,

All the best!

Hey Andrew. Great tutorial. One question though...

What exactly is the point of starting out with NTSC D1 Widescreen Square Pixel, if you're only going to convert it into NTSC DV Widescreen? Why not just start out in NTSC DV Widescreen and save any troubles you could run into?

I'm asking this because I personally don't know much about conversions of aspect ratios. So maybe an explanation as to why you do it that one would help me out. Thanks.

Hi, Great tutorial.

Just wondering, is there any need to export as MPEG2 from Premiere CS4, when you Dynamic Link it directly into Encore? I assume the conversion would be the same? So you can let Encore do it without sacrificing anything?

Cheers, keep up the great work!

Awesome tutorial as always!! I had a few questions for you that you may or may not have the answers for on here.

2. Is there a workaround for making multiple angled video in After Effects or Encore CS3?

Thanks man, keep up the great work!!

Andrew, I'm from Iran, you are amazing, many of video editors here use your products and i use them too. i learned After effects from you and think you are the only teacher available in internet for free. do you have any other video tutorials? like Photo shop tutorials or other software?
i love the way you teach, you say everything like shortcuts or you tell us the reason for anything you do.

A great follow up to this would be a tutorial based on building a movie trailer for a summer blockbuster. I think it would help to re-enforce some prior tutorials in title effects, sound design, prepping footage, etc, etc...

Plus it would give everyone a chance to learn more about making the 3 mins short films that gets our 12 dollars every summer.

Great work as always, keeps me buying the DVDs.

Andrew, you rock.

But, why are you teaching us old skool tech like DVD authoring? LOL Just kidding... I have a feeling standard def DVD's will be around a lot longer than most people predict.

I remember when I was a kid, I thought people would be traveling around in hover cars by the year 2000! (thanks a lot for the let down, George Lucas) Instead, we are still traveling around on rubber tires that were first used over 100 years ago! So, don't count SD DVD's out anytime soon.

Hey Andrew, awesome tutorial. I'm sure it cleared up and questions about DVD authoring that people (including myself ;P) might've had. But I have a question, instead rendering the menu out as a video in AE, why don't you just open the project in Encore? Wouldn't it be lossless quality this way? That way Encore doesn't have to butcher the quality of an already quality-butchered video.

Very good tutorial, but I think you lost it at one point.
When you render a motion menu you must make sure that you do it in a intra-frame video (DV, Uncompressed, Quicktime, anything else) and NOT MPEG, except if you have the option to choose where to manually place I-frames. The reason for this is that in an MPEG2 video like the one you rendered out here, not all frames exist in all the video (MPEG2 standard GOP). In order to have the video loop at the EXACT frame, by DVD spec, you need to make sure this is an I-frame. The way you did it doesn't ensure that and it can work only by chance. The loop point will be somewhere there but not at the EXACT frame you want it.
So you are better exporting in AVI (or Quicktime) and letting Encore do the MPEG, so it can place an I-frame where it is supposed to be placed,in order for the loop to work as desired.

Thank you again though for the AWESOME tutorials and the major break you have done in the Motion Design industry...

How do I get my video to render to the .m2v standard? When I select Mpeg-DVD from the drop down in the output module, and follow AK's settings to the letter from the tutorial, my file is .mpg. I have a dumb question. When you dropped comp1 into comp2 with a DV Widescreen you mention that it stretched the text. Why did you choose to make it in one format(1.00 pixel aspect) and then dump into another format(1.21 pixel aspect) when it pixelates the text? What are the issues with making the first comp in the DV Widescreen format (1.21)? I am asking because my text always pixelates when I send to DVD. Thanks!

Love the tutorial as I have been shying away from ENCORE and sticking with a simpler athouring program. I'm going to make the jump. As for the ending people... that was called an outtake and I'm sure it was left there on purpose ala "Home Improvement" as well as many movies. Hey!

Yet another fantastic tutorial! But what's with the cheeky gits complaining about what they would've rather you did? Yeah, yeah constructive criticism is all good, but if you're getting a thing for free? The whole point is to give us noobs (or not so noobs) a clue about how to use the software in simple terms. Then it's up to us to experiment and be creative with how we use it! I'm putting together a video for a top secret mission and your tutorials and products have made the creative process no harder than sifting through my own imagination! God bless you all at Videocopilot. You rock!

Amazing tutorial I can't tell you how much i needed this. Though Andrew I have some constructive critism for you. As a martial arts expert and a person who directs action and martial arts films I have to say that punch is a complete miss. I know your a visual effects artist and not a fight choreographer so i forgive you . but for anyone else out there think about your use of angles when you shoot, one miss in a fight scene will make the whole film loss credability.

question
what if i want to make a chapter menu...
its going to be a still frame with selectable chapters(text)

can that still frame be a jpeg or it still has to be a Mpeg movie?

nice tutorial Andrew. thanx

Yo, Andrew!
I have a question about Encore. I wanted to know how to make sure the button highlight goes to the next button after a movie is played.

Example: I've just finished watching the movie and it goes back to the main menu, but I want the "Bonus Features" button highlighted instead of the "Play Feature" button.

Also, how would I make the main menu stay on the loop, instead of starting from zero on the time line, after returning from another menu?

Example: I go to bonus features, but go back to the main menu, but the main menu video has started at the beginning instead of looping at the 2 second marker.

This is so funny because after about a year of trying to figure out how to author a DVD for my demo reel in After Effects and Encore, I just figured it out a few days ago on my own and low and behold here you come with your cool tutorial about it. AAARRRGH! Thanks, though.

Great tutorial. My only complaint is right when you were talking about bit rates in the export settings of after effects, it skips a section, the part where I assume you were talking about why you picked CBR at 6Mbps. I was dying to hear what a good bitrate for a DVD is and why?

Love your site and your products man, and any chance I get to tell colleagues in my industry about you, I do it. Keep up the great work

Another great video! I was just trying to do something similar and having all sorts of problems. Now I see where I was going wrong. Thanks!

How about 1 more with transitions? Like after you click a button we see what happens to Sam after the punch, or if we click the other button, something else happens.
