Awesome tutorials! I just was wondering if you could apply the disintegration fx to a cc film burn. For example, a piece of paper burning from the cc burn film transition effect (mainly the random seed points that spawn), so that it would look like the paper is burning realistically instead of left to right.

Hey,

great Tut. the only "problem" I encounter is when I, instead of granate, use text or some PSD file. Then the "Hot Stuff" layer doesnt work. Any idea how to fix this?

Overall great tutorial. Next time could you make sure the files are the same and all intact in the project zip file? The background isn't included and the video of same is a different size and resolution, so there was a lot of time spent making things match.

Hi there.. I'm busy making backgrounds Theatre production we're holding. I need to slow this transition down to about 15seconds so that it can fit with the scene. Basically someone pushes heaven off the stage and it all turns to hell. When I slow it down by extending the time of my comps it doesn't have the same effect.

Does anyone have any suggestions? It needs to take longer and still look real. its a tough one for me..

I am frustrated. I followed the video to the smallest detail, every setting, every expression, every title change, even every example process that he later deleted as a joke. Everything. Yet, once I get to the creation of the second disintegrate comp, *nothing* is even close to what he is doing now.

Tried it a third time, using a different browser--sure enough, a crucial step (that my other browser could not see) appeared (and the "transition disappeared), and I got the colored flame disintegration effect. Wonderful tutorial. Thanks

Using After Effects CS6--Same problem as Tru; followed to the smallest detail, even wrote them down, step by step all the way to the end result--and the result was: no flame. lots of blur and distortion and tinting of entire image. Tried it a second time, followed the tutorial again step by step and in the early part of the video I notice there is a divergence between what he shows on the video vs my production: no color, it stays black and white-- I notice there is a transition in this tutorial, 1/4 of the way through, which leads me to suspect that something was cut or left out of the final tutorial.
Or, CS6 is just too different from the version used in this tutorial.

From what I can see, looks like you forgot to close your expression with an ] bracket, as well as a ; at the end to complete the code, not necissarily needed in this case but it makes for better coding in the long run. Hope this is all that was wrong.

Hi, to everyone who's an expert in using after effects. I've got a question though.

I know that this effect can be applied to human videos, just like to what he showed, I was curious on how did he applied it to his friend on the video?
Whenever I tried it, the whole video is the one that disintegrates. Someone help me.

For a shorter question.
How do you apply it to the character on a video? but not literally on the whole video.

Any one know what I am doing wrong? At around 20:00 when he is doing the Hot Stuff part and he makes the changes to the original comp... when he goes back to the disintegrate comp... I am loosing the grenade image. Instead of the image being disintegrated, I am getting the effect of only seeing through the white part.
Any help would be great.

Well ummm, I'm not much of an adobe user but this is for a school project and it would be really helpful if you could help me. You know the color adjustment layer and when you do all the curves thing, Well it doesn't only happen to my tail it also happens to my whole picture. Yeah the whole is gold when i press play and i really have no idea what to do.

are you turning on luma inverted for the adjustment layer? and are you sure the layers are in the right order? because when you turn on luma inverted on an adjustment layer, it makes it so your effects apply to the layer above.

Try combining the effects you (I) 've learned with a bunch of tutorials for one movie, example: Do the demon face warp thing and the main character goes like "OMG ZOMBIES" and he shoots these zombies (gun blowback and muzzle flash to make the shots), they regen (there's a tutorial for that).. and i don't know, he casts holy water against them, and they..glow? And disintegrate.. That'd be cool

I have used this displacement technique so many times, but for some reason, this time it isn't working. The expression on the position for the transform effect isn't keeping the layer from moving entirely with the displacement.

Maybe someone alreaedy covered this, but I can't read older posts on this site. I was hoping to use this effect where the TEXT burns off but I guess because the text is WHITE it doesn't seem to grab the "HOT STUFF" layer so well. It just takes on a smokey/whispy kind of look. I don't get the "fiery burn" happening across the text as it wipes away. Got any pointers?

Corection: I had the layer on the wrong track matte. That fixed the problem so that the GREY text will now appear to burn off (although, it's not a very convincing look) but I still have the problem of not being able to change the color of the text to something else that I need.

Tried it, but no go. I'm just not getting the look of the text burning off. The color adjustment meant to create the burn color/effect changes the whole text color. Also, I need the text to be a certain color besides gray before and during the burn off. Maybe i've got something out of order but I followed the tutorial step by step. I will admit, i'm returning to the project after a couple of weeks off but I can't see any way to get text to have it's own color but BURN off as it needs to.

just shoot what you want backwards and export it to a new comp, then you can just add a reverse time effect to it, no need to go through all that other junk

Great tutorial everything came out looking great up until the step around 32 min when you take the disintegration comp and the video source comp. Some reason for me all the fire and such disappears and it becomes just a transition it looks really bad and it happens when I put the bg in. Other then that up until that point it is usable and I have another way to add the background. It just sucks I cannot figure out how to add all the cool stuff at the end because it somehow messes up. I think I messed up somewhere I cannot figure out where and when I get some free time I am going to try and redo it all

The part at 3:28 where you say "so... we'll animate from 0 to 100... by setting the stopwatch there..." makes no sense to me. You say that, but your cursor is on 150, you set the stopwatch, and suddenly two keyframes magically appear... not from 0 to 100, but from 100 to 150... =/

When he says "we'll animate from 0 to 100", he means that the transition completion will start at 0, and end at 100. Those numbers are not talking about frame numbers, but the blue number in the effects panel.
