Hi sir you are the best and I have learned a lot from your tutorials
and I have a question where is "particular" in cs4 ? thanks a lot
Joey

Trapcode Particular is a third party plugin and is not currently built into the program. You can purchase it from Red Giant.com or on the Video Copilot store, where it is also for sale.

Thanks! Working on a pilot for a submarine movie right now, so this tutorial was a blessing. And yes, I have make my reserach and even watched the movie with Eric Roberts... Also if anyone out there know any good sites for stockfootage of nuclear submarines, that would be great!

Hi Tomas! I'm currently making a submarine movie right now and would love to chat with you about whether or not you ended up finding some stockfootage? desperately hunting for depth charge and water explosion shots. Also, what is the name of the film you're making and when is the release? I look forward to seeing it! Naomi B

Well done Andrew, once again!
But there is two tiny things i think you missed: you mentioned the rotation of the propellers, the right one is rotating in wrong direction , and second, what about those barrels near explosion? I think they are affected by it on some different way, like moving away from explosion by its pressure, or something... Nevermind,it is a very very good tutorial, an the techniques you used is very unique!
Cheers from Montenegro!

Just had to write to say thanks.

I love your tutorials.

I've been in the midst of a CRAZY month. I spent 20 hours yesterday working to clean out a building we are selling and came home to tired to stand but needing to unwind before hitting the sack.

I haven't had time to log on to your site in quite some time, so I thought I'd check it out. Your late-show beats all the others. Great job. Thanks for entertaining as you inform us.
The time you spend on your tutorials is most appreciated.

I wish you and your team all the best!

Cool tutorial.. But why dont you try to give it som more atmosphere.. It kinda looks like there is a big explosion and thats it. Why dont ad a shockwaves.. And maybe some water waves cooming trough the camera.. And the boxes you have.. why dont make them shake and move a little bit.. It makes the scene much more intense..

The explosion looks a little bit fast.. you know.. It just pops up and gow away.. I think you need to add some more dramatic athmosphere..

so here's a question, from the blast would'nt ther be a little space caused ( due to displacement of water) that will drop the sub a little towards the ground(as the explosion is on top) also the preasure created would not just disappear but acclerate causing the waves to move in all directions... just sayin', might not make any sence cause never experienced any underwater explosions.

Great tutorial Andrew,
you probably will not read this .. (159th comment)
on your tutorial.. I just want to say that I worked on a couple of submarine movies and did not get struck by lightening. Tutorial is great, but all physics are wrong, but it does not matter!!! it looks good. The only problem is when you work on the movie and director wants to change the Angle of the underwater camera - that will be not feasible with your technique.. I had to "dive" into underwater acoustics, volumetrics, DOF, marine dust and bubbles, inverse gravity, and hell knows what else to make it look realistic and when director wanted to change the angle, I only reanimated 3D camera in Maya - click button render and that was it.. Using this type of effect - 3D is a better, more complete tool. Thank you for this great technique..

Very good.

It made me se Crimson Tide again

Maybe the explosion should be like a large distorted air-bubble with ligth inside? Like this http://116.118.248.45/wk_ab/digitalAssets/7261_1177455589132_20040424-explosion.jpg

Maybe you could create a sphere with some distortion effects outside the explosion?

But it was good enough, by all means

Here's another good YouTube video example of underwater explosion physics. This one is from the movie Star Wars. Though the explosion was made in space but the effect was more of how it would look underwater or in extreme inward pressure like the deep blue sea or even space: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4xiDOgTYwk
Nick Josh Karean
Here's a YouTube video that shows a good example how real underwater explosions look like. This is a volcano eruption caught underwater by Discovery Networks. Ignore the nature of the lava in the water and focus only on the nature of the explosion. See how the explosion flashes about a second or two and goes off quickly engulfed by the water as it shrinks inwards in a sucked in motion and becomes a bubble of smoke with the elements of debris and dust bursting upwards. I have also seen these kind of explosions for submarines and missiles in some movies which I can't remember right now. So here's a the best example I got for now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmMlspNoZMs

Perhaps, you can improve on this further. Thanks for all your efforts.

Thanks. It gives an idea how to work on further to improve on underwater explosions. But this tutorial shows a wrong underwater explosion in term of physics. Underwater explosions usually has one or two second bright flash as it gets engulfed by water very quickly. The rest supposed to be dark debris that travels in a smoky movement.

That comment about the end scene with the plane crash in Air Force One... hahaha. THAT was funny.

Great tutorials, keep 'em coming... And, if possible, incorporate the steps used for creating content for a scene with other programs (3DS, Maya, Vue, etc) and how to bring it all together in a scene. I know this is a site for After Effects and post production stuff, but I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to see more how-to's regarding 3D content creating and its being integrated with a scene in AE. I'd LOVE to see you incorporate Vue or Maya into one of your upcoming tutorials for us, or 3DS even... I'd love to learn more tricks and scratch beneath the surface of those programs so I can move on from relying on Softimage for my 3D content, when needed.

Thanks again Andrew for the tutorials and for everything else that this site brings to its fans.

Nice! Some great tips here.

If requests are accepted here, I'd love to see a little more on the 3DSMax/Cinema4D side as well. You explain things in a way easily understood and wish some basic 3D stuff would go beyond particles done in 3D, as in some other tutorials.

Maybe I'm just thinking a little selfishly, not finding a good place to start with some 3D modeling basics, but just a thought I hope you might consider.

Hi Andrew. Your tutorials is really great, but in this tutorial I find a some unrealistic things.
1: a fire sphere is to big. Air in the depth-bomb box burn is very fast and do not spread very far.

2: Shock wave from explosion spread much faster then flame and on it we we should see a flame inside a "water bubble" which was formed from shock wave.

3. After the shock wave will dissipate there should be a compression becasue water to aspire to occupy the former volume.

Very cool Tutorial, as per usual!

What i liked best, was the way you used tinted copys of the layer to simulate the shadows of the Volumetric lighting!

And for some reason, this tut really reminds me of the ComputerGame classic "Silent Service II"

(To all of you out there, that know the game: you´re showing your age, lol xD)

hi andrew

A bubble charge at the camera and also a shift in position of the sub after the impact, i feel could have made the shot look much better...

Okay okay... free tut i know..

funny thing about this. I am creating an underwater short. The Setting is a City underwater which is called Rapture (Bioshock fans you heard right).
Normally I wouldn't do this but YES I'm going to spam

Thanks a lot Andrew. But here is the thing, we all now that we can make some sick looking Fx in ae.. but when we render them and compress them.. we loose a lot of the details.

For instance, you use a lot the ramp tool - whenever i or other use it- we get the banding artifacts in the compressed file... Can you give us an idea about how to get ride of them

Keep it up - You are an great inspirational source!

Oh yea about that there will be never a submarine movie again - well i'll say never say never, because you never know

very interesting, but i guess that the speed of light is faster than everything,i mean that the wiggle is synchro with the charge and i think that it should be a little bit after.
thank you andrew. realy your website is changed my life.i didn't fall in love with AE but with videocopilot since 2007.
you gave a lot of things. i realy want to do somthing for videocopilot but i can't cause im so far. bedji from algeria

i loved all your tutorials andrew but i have just a question this time

shouldn't be a underwater explosion, made by bubbles and water wave?

I have never seen the fire in the water or probably, not so clear

Thank you for your attention

the effect is amazing...but one comment...

wouldn't the smoke be on bubbles?...i mean, the holl explosion underwater miss bubbles...the huge ball of fire, would be a huge bubble...i think with some refractions on max you could make that pop...

but anyway, i think its just fantastic how you developed..

thanks..

Andrew, I have a suggestion as to video research.. "Dry Ice" depth charges. People put dry ice bombs in the there pools and the explosions size expands, shrinks and wobbles. its really cool, you guys should check it out on youtube.

I Love your tutorials! I would never have anything bad to say about them but I shuttled thru the timeline back and forth and I see the explosion occur from a point that has no depth charge. The video itself is amazing and I can't wait to do the tutorial. The volumetric lighting is badass! I have bought almost everything you have and it has helped my projects tremendously! Can't wait for the next one!
