60 RESPONSES TO "DEINTERLACE IN AE"

by mango 10/01/2009
Thanks Andrew. A informative tutorial.
by Mark 09/05/2009
@KIDDU
You can buy the 'VIDEO COPILOT: Series One' (see Products). On that DVD you can find the first 50 tutorials plus some cool extra's. Very handy.
And, like Andrew once said, it's a nice way to donate VC when you purchase one.
by KIDDU 08/14/2009
how can i download these..plz suggest me
by MrVpt 08/02/2009
Thx a lot Andrew for those great tutorials, especially the basic training experience.

@Dark3nd: I bet by the time you must have figured that out; anyway, there might be other people wondering how to get the track matte: simply use the shortcut F4 to toggle between mode and trackmatte to the normal view (shy, quality, fx...). Be sure to check that your keyboard is in FMode (in case you have a programmable keyboard).
by Jim 07/06/2009
hey Andrew I already watch some of your tutorials and I find it very useful,

Is this tutorial makes the footage a film look?

by Darkfaced 07/06/2009
Pardon me but i'm not really familiar with deinterlacing but that was a quick tut and looks interesting.thanks a lot!
by ted 07/05/2009
hello. What about PAL as you are talking about NTSC. Does it works the same?
thank you.
by 3AKIS London 06/18/2009

Very useful! Where can I find scanlines for a 1920x1080 resolution?
by Reinilsom 06/06/2009
Very good.
by Supreme Sam 06/05/2009
Hahaha, I just saw this tutorial after watching all his new ones, he sounds all young, and stuterring at some places. I always thought deinterlacing footage reduces the quality... doesn't this method do the same?
by lsslhym 05/27/2009
Well,very good ,i like!
by sandy 04/22/2009
hi Andrew,

by Tshering Norbu 03/22/2009
Didn't know what deinterlacing until I watched your tutorial. I haven't tried yet but I will let you know how things go. I had so much problem with that kind video.
by Dwayne G. 03/11/2009
Hey Andrew, I tried this tutorial with HDV footage from the sony fx1 and it didn't seem to work, i used the HDV scanlines psd. However when I tried it with DV footage it worked. The HDV footage is interlaced and it does upper field first b e i can't seem to see the interlaced lines. Can u tell me if i'm doing something wrong?
by NATX 02/18/2009
To anyone needeng the scanlines psd...

hi,
i'm a new after effects user and i don't understand what can i do with this tutorial
what happening to the footage? is it's becoming more clearer or something?
thanx..
by Aamir N. 02/12/2009
Oh wow this really helped me fix my blurry DV footage. It was already de-interlaced, so all i had to do was add the blur :)

Helped me update my Facebook pic too lol
You've come so far in 3 years!
Thnx
by Floris Liesker 02/08/2009
Indeed, as many said before me:
Why?
I understand what you are doing but why all this hassle? What's the gain?
by PostMagic 11/15/2008
King Tut!
Thanks again!
by Leanne Nolan 11/07/2008
G'day Andrew

I'm from Australia and i have two questions about this tutorial. All my footage is in PAL format. Does the scan lines you provide with this tutorial work in this format. i'm also wandering if it will work in both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios.

Cheers mate
love your work

Hi, Andrew!

Don't worry about some people complaints and you are not stealing people's time... We realy appreciate your work. People like you deserve the best in this world. I will promote you around.
Congratulations!
by .-_-. 09/05/2008
deinterlacing means loosing half the resolution. before teaching how to deinterlacing,i think you should explain this is and why it is done. i don't think this is different than "deinterlace" command in many video tools. as david lee writes even virtual dub has this feature. also there are many options for better deinterlacing as virtual dub's smart deinterlace, which just deinterlaces the footage when there is motion causing lines. even a better solution (if you r doing this just for yourself to watch something on your computer) is to watch the footage with a player that has deinterlace option like free vlc player, which has many alternatives for deinteralces filter. i appreciate your effort to prepare this tutorial but i also think you should answer some important questions of some guy, vincet, david lee, mike and whyte myke... otherwise you are stealing people's time!
by trongvannd 09/05/2008
So great. I am going to do like that.
by Andy 08/14/2008
How did you make the scan lines? Its there a simple method in Photoshop to do this?
by whyte myke 07/18/2008
i don't understand why you would use this tech, what's the purpose of this, i'm totally confused as to why you would use this... i understand how you created it... but just not sure WHY i would use this
by Mike 07/14/2008
Is it possible to interleave alternating frames of upper field and lower field to effectively double the frame rate? Thus slowing the video down without it becoming jerky? Is the a plug-in that will display alternating frames from two different video clips?
by hazem 07/11/2008
sweet........just got canon hv30 and i needed to learn that......good job.......can u make a tutorial teaching shallow dof
by linwei 06/30/2008
very useful
by wombat 05/26/2008
if you click on "project" you'll get a .rar of the video and the scanlines.psd file.

by caitya 05/25/2008
Ok, I tried but I don't understand whay to duplicate the precomposed layer? I tries without it and seems that it works also.
by philip 05/17/2008
Perhaps to solve the problem of poor line quality in China (see above). . . can you access Real Player 11? It has a new facility. It's the way I'm holding on to Andrew's gems. Thank Andrew.
by koyaanisqatsi 05/17/2008
yes! if tutorials are free why not downloadable too
by 孙全晓 04/08/2008
i think that if the tutorials could be downloaded will be better. the line is busy ,i can't watch it flowly. you konw ,the line in chinese is not very well.
by Marco 03/27/2008
It looks like this tutorial discards 50% of the available data. Might it not be better to use AE's deinterlace filter with Pixel Motion ??

@Veloso, you can create it yourself in Photoshop by drawing a single pixel black line on a white background. Then select the black line and one white line with rectangle select. Turn that into a fill pattern (somewhere in the Edit menu I think), and fill the entire image with that fill pattern.
by Veloso 02/28/2008
As I do to get "scanline.psd."?
excuse! because my English is horrible.
from of already my gratitudes!
by Homer 02/03/2008
I'm sorry! But I don't find the FPS Converter in AE. Where I acquire this plugin?
by Patrick 01/27/2008
Hey, where can I get the scanlines.psd to import into AE? I have Photoshop CS and cannot seem to find it.
by CEnko 01/23/2008
How can i arrenge lines for widescreen
by Johnny Cash 01/10/2008
i don't get it. Great tutorial, but when i try to do it, when i put the scanlines in my timeline, it all goes white; it doesn't happen like in the video, anyone knows how to do this?
by David Lee 01/03/2008
Hey Andrew, great tutorial! I've really appreciated all of your tutorials and have learned a lot in AE thanks to you, Aaharon, and the other guys. I was wondering what you thought about using this method versus for instance smartDeinterlacer for Virtualdub. (which is also free, but a bit of learning curve). I noticed also this seems like it gets rid of half the information. Thanks for your priceless efforts!
by Darbaz Dara 01/03/2008
great work thank you for sharing your ideas with all

thank you again

Andrew Thank you so much!!
by Andrew Gothman 11/25/2007
for Suvir,
You should alwayse keep hd clips that you will use to edit with as an uncompressed raw clip to keep the hd quality if you try to compress it because of size it will ruin the quality.
Thats why i have to have 2 terabites of harddrive space.
If space is a problem, then do what i did, i picked up another hitache 750gig kla drive from newegg.com for $200. its sata 3 and has 3 power speeds to save life. my mac pro came with a 500gig drive but costed $500, for its mac logo, it was the hitache kla drive. :( waste of money
I just finished high school but instead of paying $200k for visual effects school i'm buying equipment to start my own business this spring.
by Suvir 11/24/2007
Hey AK...
I hav this Software called video enhancer... which allows conversion of SD videos to HD videos.... I get prty large sized files as out put.. A 4 secs video is 1.3gb... Is there any way to compress HD videos.???
Please need some help urgently... am working on a university project...
by Bruno Dias 11/22/2007
I can't view this tutorial...
It doesn't load..

by ian barbosa 11/05/2007
For those in the know (IMHO), this technique is for people not willing to spend money on fancy plugins (which provides tons of controls). You could use the standard deinterlace filter provided with photoshop to process each individual frame... heh heh. or we could use Andrew's extensive knowledge and apply it ourselves. Me... i bought the HV20 and shot it straight away...Thanks andrew... you da man!
by Vincent 10/25/2007
Just wondering... Would it be equally as good (or even better) to directionally blur the lower layer UP 0.5 pixels and the upper layer DOWN 0.5 pixels -- instead of the lower layer UP 1.0 pixel??? It would seem that blurring this way might be a bit more accurate. But not sure... What do you think?
by Mohammed 10/23/2007
thank you
by _Nek 10/19/2007
Hey Andrew:

I watched this the other day without knowing exactly what you were talking about. I recently bought a small camcorer and it gives me the interlaced video (on some settings). I knew this tutorial had something to do with it... It really makes a difference... thanx!!
by Adam 10/16/2007
Thank you so much. You are the man.
by Marco 10/05/2007
Same question as SomeGuy above. It looks like the raw footage simply was recorded as Upper Field first- selecting that option in the settings should place the scanlines in the proper order. Shouldn't it ?
by Some Guy 10/01/2007
Hey, thanks, nice tutorial. But I have a question. Why should I use that? If I choose "Lower Field First" in the "Interpret Footage" dialog, After Effects does the Deinterlacing. I don't understand, why I should do all the work? Is the build in Deinterlacing of AE bad or what is the reason using this technique?
by Hampus Lager 09/26/2007
I had to watch it again today. I had to deal with worthless piece of shit footage today. Thanks Andrew!
by Connor 09/19/2007
Very handy and useful to know.
